Construction of PES composite ultrafiltration membrane with high permeability and selectivity assisted by three-dimensional Ni-Zn MOF@Multi CNC

Shuang Zheng,Lin Ding,Feilong Hu,Yong Zhang,Zhaofeng Ouyang,Shujuan Yang

In this work, the novel metal organic frameworks/multi-branched nanocellulose (Ni-Zn MOF@Multi CNC) fillers with different three-dimensional nanostructures are fabricated via two in-situ growing strategies, which were blended into Polyether sulfone (PES) matrix to construct composite ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. Furthermore, the effects of two structures of fillers on construction and performance of composite membranes are detailed investigated here. The results confirmed that the obtained PES composite membranes exhibited excellent permeability and selectivity because of the ultra-high hydrophilicity, abundant pores, and more negative charge of Ni-Zn MOF@Multi CNC fillers. Besides, compared with nanosphere structure of Ni-Zn MOF@Multi CNC, the nanoflower filler could provide more pores and cavities to enable higher water permeance, and more active surface charge (more -COO- groups) to increase protein rejection. The Ni-Zn MOF@Multi CNC 0.05 /PES membrane showed an 83 % higher permeance (up to 1151.00 L/m 2 h) and greatly improved BSA rejection (99 %). The Ni-Zn MOF@Multi CNC 0.05 /PES membrane has been successfully applied to different wastewater treatment, and shows expectant ultrafiltration performance.

Preparation of hydrophilic ZIF-8-NH2/PES mixed matrix membranes based on the co-solvent strategy for dye/salt separation

Chunlei Wang,Dawei Ji,Xuyong Tian,Hongye Lv,Xiuping Li,Tai Zhang,Haolong Xue,Chun Wang,Jingjing Yan,Changfa Xiao

Doping metal-organic frameworks into the casting solution is a common method for preparing mixed matrix membranes. However, metal-organic frameworks are prone to agglomeration and poor dispersion. This can lead to a decline in membrane performance. To address these issues, this work proposed “co-solvent synthesis and in-situ doping” strategy. In this strategy, N,N-Dimethylformamide, which was also the solvent in the casting solution, was chosen as the synthesis carrier for ZIF-8-NH 2 nanoparticles. The prepared ZIF-8-NH 2 suspension could be directly doped into the casting solution in situ. This process eliminated the drying and pre-dispersion steps. Research showed that with 0.5 wt% ZIF-8-NH 2 , the membrane's hydrophilicity significantly improved, with the water contact angle of 72.5°. The pure water flux reached 229 Lm −2 h −1 . Moreover, the retention rates of Congo Red and NaCl were 97.3 % and 3.5 % respectively, demonstrating excellent dye/salt separation. In particular, the flux recovery rate was maintained at more than 91 %, demonstrating good anti-fouling performance. This work provides a promising technical strategy for the efficient treatment of textile dyeing wastewater and resource recovery.

PES mixed-matrix ultrafiltration membranes incorporating ZIF-8 and poly(ionic liquid) by microemulsion synthetic with flux and antifouling properties

Ting-xu Wang,Si-ruo Chen,Ting Wang,Li-guang Wu,Yu-xing Wang

Polyethersulfone (PES) mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) incorporating a co-nanofiller of ZIF-8 and poly(ionic liquid) were constructed via a facile one-pot microemulsion strategy, aiming to increase the flux and anti-fouling properties of the original PES membranes. First, ZIF-8 nanoparticles were synthetized in the reverse microemulsion using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (BmimOTF) ionic liquid as a surfactant and 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (VeimBF 4 ) polymerizable ionic liquid as an oil phase. Subsequently, the oil phase VeimBF 4 in the reverse microemulsion was polymerized, and a latex containing ZIF-8 nanoparticles and poly(VeimBF 4 ) was formed. Finally, MMMs were constructed by blending the latex with PES via the phase-inversion method. The microstructures of ZIF-8 and the MMMs were characterized by TEM, SEM, FTIR, XRD, and XPS analysis. Results showed that the mean size of ZIF-8 are small (10 ∼ 35 nm). Addition of the poly(VeimBF 4 ) and ZIF-8 nanoparticles increased the pore size and hydrophilicity of MMMs. The maximum water flux was 105 L m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 and 90% flux recovery were obtained after five cycles of filtration, and little decrease of WCA appeared on all MMMs after the repeated experiment, indicated the good stability of MMMs. Compared with PES ultrafiltration membrane, pure water flux and flux recovery rate of the MMMs increased by 15 and 2.8 times respectively.

Glycerol-regulated blend membranes of polyether sulfone (PES) and sulfonated polyether sulfone (SPES) for the separation of dye and salt

Yutong Qin,Yingbo Chen,Yongyan Wu,Haowei Bai,Yongxiang Shi

Currently, in the field of dye wastewater treatment, loose nanofiltration membranes generally suffer from low flux and are prone to fouling. Moreover, compared to ultrafiltration membranes, they exhibit a certain retention rate for salts, which is not conducive to the efficient separation of dyes and salts. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop membranes with high flux and high efficiency in separating dyes from salts. In this study, a phase-inversion-engineered blend membrane comprising polyether sulfone (PES) and sulfonated polyether sulfone (SPES) is reported, which forms a hydrophilic surface layer and compositionally graded substructure. Glycerol was used to modify the membrane, acting as both a lubricant and pore size regulator. By forming hydrogen bonds (intermolecular forces) with the polymer, it improved film formation properties and pore structure, enhanced hydrophilicity, and further increased water flux. Scanning electron microscopy, surface zeta potential, and fully automatic water contact angle test were used to characterize the surface and cross-sectional morphology, surface electronegativity, and hydrophilic of the loose nanofiltration membrane. The pure water flux of the membrane with a solid content of 35% and glycerol addition of 0.1 wt% increase from the original 65.31 L m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 to 104.16 L m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . It achieves near-complete rejection (>96%) of multiple dyes including Congo red, Acid Blue 83, Coomassie Brilliant Blue G-250, and Rose Bengal, while maintaining ultralow salt rejection (Na 2 SO 4 : 16.86%; NaCl: 2.86%; MgSO 4 : 2.42%; MgCl 2 : 0.26%)—indicating effective size and charge-based selectivity. This work establishes a simple yet effective glycerol-mediated strategy for fabricating high-flux blend membranes with precise molecular discrimination, offering great potential for dye desalination and resource recovery in textile effluent treatment.

A novel thermoplastic sizing containing graphene oxide functionalized with structural analogs of matrix for improving interfacial adhesion of CF/PES composites

Liu Liu,Fei Yan,Ming Li,Mengjie Zhang,Linghan Xiao,Lei Shang,Yuhui Ao

A novel complex sizing containing PES and functionalized GO was prepared for improving interfacial adhesion of CF/PES composites. To achieve better dispersion of GO in sizing and improve the interfacial compatibility of composites, GO were covalently functionalized by 4, 4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) and 4, 4′-diaminodiphenyl ether, which have similar chemical structures to PES matrix. SEM, dynamic contact angle and TGA tests showed that functionalized GO were closely attached to the CF surface, and the surface energy as well as the thermal stability of CF were greatly increased. Among all the sizings, PES/GO-DDS exhibited the best reinforcing effect, revealing a significant increase of 74.1% in IFSS and 40.1% in ILSS as compared with un-sized CF. Notably, the variation trend of mechanical properties was accordant with the interfacial strength . Moreover, the interface enhancement mechanisms were proposed, the increased interfacial adhesion was benefited from the positive effect of interface layer .

In-situ construction of a polydopamine@ZIF-8 functional layer on PES ultrafiltration membranes for high-flux, antifouling dye/salt separation

Deyi Han,Lin Ding,Shujuan Yang,Yong Zhang,Haichuan Zhang

This study reports the one-step in-situ assembly of a polydopamine (PDA)@ZIF-8 functional layer on polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes for high-flux, antifouling dye/salt separation. Leveraging the synergistic effect of dopamine (DA) self-polymerization and the in-situ growth of ZIF-8 during the nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) process, a highly integrated PDA@ZIF-8 functional layer was successfully constructed on the PES membrane surface. Strong coordination and chelation interactions among Zn 2 + ions, the catechol moieties of PDA, and 2-methylimidazole (2-MIM) increase the casting solution viscosity, triggering delayed demixing and promoting the migration of hydrophilic precursors toward the membrane interface. Structurally, the in-situ assembly of PDA@ZIF-8 significantly increased the selective layer thickness from 4.73 μm to 33.10 μm. The resulting ultrafiltration membrane exhibited exceptional separation efficiency, delivering a Congo Red (CR) rejection rate of over 99.5% while maintaining a salt rejection rate under 5%, enabling the efficient fractionation of dyes and salts. A high pure water flux of 455 L·m −2 ·h −1 at 0.1 MPa is attained, which is attributed to the enhanced surface hydrophilicity and the intrinsic sub-nanometer microporous channels of ZIF-8. Furthermore, the functionalized layer demonstrates remarkable antifouling properties toward anionic dyes, with a stable flux recovery ratio (FRR) exceeding 85% after multiple cycles of CR filtration. This research presents an effective membrane preparation strategy that enhances separation performance while ensuring excellent long-term antifouling stability.

Ta-Fe in-situ coating PES membrane and its application in oily wastewater treatment: Insight into modification and anti-fouling mechanisms

Chen Liu,Mengjiao Yan,Kangying Guo,Yue Gao,Fang Liu,Baoyu Gao

Membrane fouling is a serious problem that limits the widespread application of membrane technology. Herein, we propose an effective modification method by in-situ modifying polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membrane with tannic acid (TA) and Fe 3+ chelates to improve its pollution resistance. The TA-Fe 3+ complexes could deposit on the PES membrane surface and form a hydration layer by Van Der Waals force, hydrogen bonding force, and hydrophobic association. The modified membrane (PES\TA\Fe 3+ ) had enhanced fouling resistance and membrane flux due to its dual advantages of abundant OH groups and favorable spatial structure. After modification, the roughness of membrane surface increased from 219 nm to 257 nm, and its water contact angle decreased from 58.9° to 26.5°, endowing the PES\TA\Fe 3+ membrane with a strong resistance to oil droplets through electrostatic repulsion, steric hindrance effect, and hydrogen bonding force. Polyaluminum chloride-polydimethyldiallylammonium chloride (PAC-PDMDAAC) could alleviate 85 % membrane fouling resistance. PAC-PDMDAAC mainly mitigated irreversible membrane fouling by removing oil droplets and forming large and loose flocs. While the use of PES\TA\Fe 3+ membrane mainly reduced the adsorption resistance and the resistance of membrane itself. The anti-fouling performance of PES\TA\Fe 3+ membrane changed with pH owing to the changes in the properties of TA-Fe 3+ complexes. The hydrophilic layer would be decomposed under alkaline conditions due to the deprotonation of TA and excessive hydrolysis of Fe 3+ . This study provides an efficient anti-fouling strategy and reveals the modification and anti-fouling mechanisms of the hydrophilic membrane, providing theoretical guidance for the further development of membrane technology.

Effects of a dual functional filler, polyethersulfone-g-carboxymethyl chitosan@MWCNT, for enhanced antifouling and penetration performance of PES composite membranes

Jiahui Zhao,Dahai Zeng,Qiwei Wang,Zhidan Lin,Florian Vogel,Wei Li,Peng Zhang

Ultrafiltration technology, separating water from impurities by the core membrane, is an effective strategy for treating wastewater to meet the ever-growing requirement of clean and drinking water . However, the similar nature of hydrophobic organic pollutants and the membrane surface leads to severe adsorption and aggregation, resulting unavoidable membrane degradation of penetration and rejection. The present study presents a novel block amphiphilic polymer, polyethersulfone-g-carboxymethyl chitosan@MWCNT (PES-g-CMC@MWCNT), which is synthesized by grafting hydrophobic polyethersulfone to hydrophilic carboxymethyl chitosan in order to suspend CMC in organic solution. A mixture of hydrophilic carboxymethyl chitosan and hydrophobic polymers (polyethersulfone), in which hydrophilic segments are bonded to hydrophobic segments, could provide hydrophilic groups, as well as gather and remain stable on membrane surfaces by their hydrophobic interaction for improved compatibility and durability. The resultant ultrafiltration membranes exhibit high water flux (198.10 L m −2 ·h −1 ), suitable hydrophilicity (64.77°), enhanced antifouling property (82.96%), while still maintains excellent rejection of bovine serum albumin (91.75%). There has also been an improvement in membrane cross-sectional morphology, resulting in more regular pores size (47.64 nm) and higher porosity (84.60%). These results indicate that amphiphilic polymer may be able to significantly promote antifouling and permeability of ultrafiltration membranes.

Constructing a dual strategy of hydrophilic nanochannel and multiscale porosity in multi-level PES/SPSf hybrid membrane for enhancing water vapor selectivity

Yanli Zhang,Lei Gao,Jinpeng Sun,Xu Li,Qingping Xin,Xiaoli Ding,Ningning Gao,Yuzhong Zhang

Membrane humidification remains a key concern for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), yet sulfonated polymer membranes like SPEEK, which suffer from excessive swelling and mechanical degradation under high-humidity operation. In this study, a multiscale porous PES/SPSf hybrid humidified membrane with rigid PES backbone and -SO 3 H functionality is fabricated via phase inversion. The porous substructure promotes capillary condensation, while the hydrophilic structure domains enhance water adsorption and diffusion. Compared to pure M0 membrane, the M30-6 membrane achieves a water vapor permeability of 2917 GPU and a water vapor/N 2 selectivity of 1307, representing 59% and 686% enhancements, respectively. The synergistic effect between hydrophilic -SO 3 H group and the multiscale porosity structure demonstrates the potential of these membrane designs to strengthen the PEMFCs' humidification.

Leaf-like ZIF-L as self-sacrificed template via acid induced removal for stronger negatively charged PES membranes based on RTIPS method

Yi Guo,Jinchao Chen,Chunmei Gao,Shifeng Ji,Yunqing Xing,Wenjing Tan

In this paper, ZIF-L was blended with citric acid (CA) and polyethersulfone (PES) to prepare a casting solution. A novel negatively charged ultrafiltration (UF) membrane (ZIF-L/CA/PES) was obtained using the reverse thermally induced phase separation (RTIPS) method. The hydrophilic carboxyl groups present in CA not only imparted high hydrophilicity and negative charge to the membrane surface, enhancing the membrane’s selectivity and contamination resistance, but also created an acidic environment to attack the Zn atoms in ZIF-L by the ionized H + from CA, resulting in the generation of micro-defective pores and an improvement in permeability. Additionally, the results showed that membranes generated through the RTIPS process exhibit uniform porous surfaces and spongy cross-sections, enhancing membrane performance. The optimized membranes demonstrated the capability to achieve a pure water flux of up to 2267 L/m 2 h with 93.1 % humic acid (HA) retention, and a remarkable membrane flux recovery rate of 75.8 %, suggesting the crucial roles played by CA and ZIF-L in the separation process. In conclusion, hydrophilic anti-fouling UF membranes with a high negative charge and excellent permeation selectivity were fabricated by establishing micro-defective channels through the incorporation of carboxylic acid and ZIF-L, combined with the RTIPS process.

A novel Nafion-Functionalized Polyethersulfone(PES)-based ion-permselective separator for high performance Li-O2 batteries using LiI as a redox mediator

Jiuqing Liu,Feifei Song,Junying He,Zikun Hong,Qihou Li,Ya Chen,Lishun Bai,Fanli Zeng,Chen Cheng,Zehao Chen

Summary Owing to its unparalleled theoretical energy density, the Li-O 2 batteries are thought to be one of the most promising energy storage systems, but its application is seriously hindered by its potential safety risks arising from the passivation and corrosion of lithium anode. To address these issues, it is an efficient way to develop functionalized separator that could prevent the migration of anions and macromolecules from cathode toward anode. Herein, a novel Nafion-functionalized polyethersulfone (PES)-based ion-permselective separator was prepared by using non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The Nafion ensures a better physical strength of the composite separator, and further characterizations show that the obtained composite separator owns good ionic conductivity (0.52 mS cm −1 ), high lithium ion migration number (0.80), and better cyclic stability (120 cycles, 1000 mAh g −1 ). Consequently, the composite separator serves as an excellent candidate to solve the “shuttle effect” of redox mediators (RMs), the assembled Li-O 2 battery with composite separator adding LiI as RMs presents lower charge overpotential and longer cycle stability (170 cycles, 1000 mAh g −1 ).

Unraveling the role of ion valence in nonsolvent induced phase separation: A salt coagulation Bath strategy for tailoring SPES/PES membrane structure

Zezhen Zhang,Shuman Feng,Mengqing Ren,Haolan Xiao,Shanjun Gao,Lili Wu

Precisely controlling pore structure and surface chemistry in ionic polymer membranes during nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) remains challenging. Here, SPES/PES blend membranes were fabricated by systematically varying salt type and concentration in the coagulation bath, showing that cation-anion valence matching, besides salt concentration, also regulates membrane structure during NIPS. Experimental results showed that, relative to pure water, salt-containing baths slowed phase separation and yielded denser membranes, with a stronger effect at higher salt concentrations. Valence-matched salts produced smaller surface pores than valence-mismatched salts (Na 2 SO 4 and MgCl 2 , 22.79 and 19.62 nm, respectively), whether compared at equal concentration (0.1 M: NaCl 16.74 nm, MgSO 4 13.73 nm) or equal ionic strength ( I  = 0.3: NaCl 11.26 nm, MgSO 4 15.14 nm). This trend may be related to stronger SPES chain aggregation in valence-matched salt solutions. Salt baths suppressed SPES loss into the coagulation bath, thereby enriching surface sulfonate groups and improving hydrophilicity. The membrane prepared in 0.1 M MgSO 4 exhibited excellent separation performance (>99% BSA, 96% Lyz, and 97% MB rejection) and enhanced mechanical strength (5.97 MPa). This pore-forming-agent-free strategy provides a simple route to high-performance functionalized membranes.
