The low effective capacity, inferior initial Coulombic efficiency, and unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) of silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) pose significant challenges for the widespread application. Herein, to circumvent these issues, a micron-sized SiOC-based anode with 3D structure is constructed by Si and Cu co-doping using solvent-free ball milling for high-performance LIBs. The Cu 3 Si alloy is formed in situ as an intermediate that is anchored to the surface of Si within the SiOC matrix. The unique 3D SiOC-based anode with Cu 3 Si interphase provides fast electron conductivity and high mechanical strength, while facilitating the formation of a robust and LiF-rich SEI. Specifically, the SiOC-based anode delivers excellent cyclic stability and rate capability (750.0 mAh g −1 for 1000 cycles at 1 A g −1 ). Notably, the full cells equipped with an NCM811 cathode maintain this cyclic stability, achieving a 93.0% capacity retention after 150 cycles. This work provides insights into the rational fabrication of a 3D micron-sized SiOC-based anode with an in situ generated Cu 3 Si interphase for advanced LIBs and beyond.

Lithium dendrite growth greatly limits the application of lithium metal batteries . Herein, a new fluorine-containing sulfone-based electrolyte is proposed for lithium metal batteries. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), a LiF-rich stable SEI with compact and uniform morphology is formed on lithium metal anode , suppressing the Li dendrite formation and enhance the cycling life. In Li||Cu half-battery, a remarkable Coulombic efficiency of 95.9 % within 130 cycles and 93.5 % within 100 cycles are realized at 0.5 mA·cm −2 and 1 mA·cm −2 , respectively. In Li||Li symmetric battery , the cycling life is about 480 h at 1.0 mA·cm −2 which is double as the commercial electrolyte. Moreover, in Li||LiFePO 4 battery, a significantly improved capacity retention of 94.3 % with a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.8 % after 100 cycles is achieved at 0.5C. The designed new fluorine-containing sulfone-based electrolyte provides new strategy toward high energy density lithium metal batteries.

A once overlooked source of electrolyte degradation incurred by dissolved manganese (II) species in lithium-ion batteries has been identified recently. In order to deactivate the catalytic activity of such manganese (II) ion, 1-aza-12-crown-4-ether (A12C4) with cavity size well matched manganese (II) ion is used in this work as electrolyte additive. Theoretical and experimental results show that stable complex forms between A12C4 and manganese (II) ions in the electrolyte, which does not affect the solvation of Li ions. The strong binding effect of A12C4 additive reduces the charge density of manganese (II) ion and inhibits its destruction of the PF 6 − structure in the electrolyte, leading to greatly improved thermal stability of manganese (II) ions-containing electrolyte. In addition to bulk electrolyte, A12C4 additive also shows capability in preventing Mn 2+ from degrading SEI on graphite surface. Such bulk and interphasial stability introduced by A12C4 leads to significantly improved cycling performance of LIBs.

Pulverization and surface instability have been identified as the main impediments to the application of Si anodes in high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, a Si-graphitic carbon hybrid (SiG) is created via embedding Si nanoparticles in between expanding graphite interlayers, thus to be adopted as a model system to unravel structure-properties relations for LIBs applications. We explore the impact of artificial surface coating layers on the lithium cycling performance of SiG particles. In comparison with native SiG and carbon-coated SiG (CC-SiG), we find that the “sticky-carbon” coating, i.e., an epoxy-rich layer on top of the carbon coating, gave rise to superior cycle performance. In the “sticky carbon” coated SiG (SCC-SiG), the surface chemistry appears to have a pivotal role in both alleviating electrode disintegration and forming a favorable SEI rich in fluorine-polymers. These positive findings are examined in electrodes with mass loading ranging from 1.0 to 5.0 mg/cm 2 , achieving area capacities up to ∼5.0 mAh/cm 2 . A full cell adopting >6 mg/cm 2 LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) cathode and SCC-SiG delivers stable cycling performances. It is hence unraveled that the carbon coating layer with reactive surface groups on the top is an unrecognized key for wide range of Si-based anodes.

Lithium metal anodes (LMAs) are being researched to enhance their potential as ideal candidates for high-energy-density rechargeable batteries. However, an unstable solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer and dendrite formation severely hinder their practical operations due to poor coulombic efficiency (CE) and potential security risks. Herein, an artificial SEI layer with various inorganic species was constructed via a strategy involving pre-planting various salt anions on the LMA. The as-prepared layer with multifunctional properties could stabilize liquid–electrode interfaces and proactively regulate even distribution and facilitate the homogeneous diffusion of the ion flux. Moreover, the anion-release behavior of this layer would be an additional attribute that could compensate for the anion consumption during cycling. As a result, the performance of modified LMAs could be significantly improved via this artificial SEI. Li–Cu cells provided CEs of above 98% among a range of current densities with long lifespans, and the symmetric cells showed stable cycling for over 1800 h at 1 mA cm−2. In practice, an assembled LiFePO4/Li cell displayed excellent cyclability of over 1000 cycles with high CEs at 2C. This strategy via., anions-planting protection mechanisms sheds light on tuning robust artificial SEI layers and can offer a fresh perspective to guide the design of high-performance LMAs.

Tailoring inorganic components of cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is critical to improving the cycling performance of lithium metal batteries. However, it is challenging due to complicated electrolyte reactions on cathode/anode surfaces. Herein, the species and inorganic component content of the CEI/SEI is enriched with an objectively gradient distribution through employing pentafluorophenyl 4-nitrobenzenesulfonate (PFBNBS) as electrolyte additive guided by engineering bond order with functional groups. In addition, a catalytic effect of LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 (NCM622) cathode is proposed on the decomposition of PFBNBS. PFBNBS with lower highest occupied molecular orbital can be preferentially oxidized on the NCM622 surface with the help of the catalytic effect to induce an inorganic-rich CEI for superior electrochemical performance at high voltage. Moreover, PFBNBS can be reduced on the Li surface due to its lower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital , increasing inorganic moieties in SEI for inhibiting Li dendrite generation. Thus, 4.5 V Li||NCM622 batteries with such electrolyte can retain 70.4% of initial capacity after 500 cycles at 0.2 C, which is attributed to the protective effect of the excellent CEI on NCM622 and the inhibitory effect of its derived CEI/SEI on continuous electrolyte decomposition.

Li metal is considered as an ideal anode for Li-O 2 batteries because of its unbeatably theoretical specific capacity and low electrode potential. Unfortunately, the growth of Li dendritic and the sensitivity to electrolyte and O 2 hinder the practical applications of Li anode. Herein, AlF 3 as an electrolyte additive is firstly employed in a Li-O 2 battery, which can boost the formation of LiF@Al-Li@Al 2 O 3 -rich SEI film via in-situ spontaneous reactions of AlF 3 with Li anode in O 2 atmosphere. The generated SEI film contributes to inducing the homogeneous nucleation of Li and reducing the disgusting side reactions, which can suppress the growth of Li dendrite and improve the cyclability of Li anode. Benefiting from the rational design, both the Li-O 2 and the Li|Li symmetric batteries with AlF 3 electrolyte exhibit low overpotential and good cycling stability. We hope this work could provide a facile way to in-situ construct a stable SEI film to alleviate the uneven Li nucleation for Li-O 2 batteries.

High-capacity silicon/carbon composite anodes for lithium-ion batteries face rapid capacity degradation from extreme volume changes due to conventional organic-dominated solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) lacking mechanical/ionic stability. Constructing robust inorganic SEI (e.g., LiF-dominated interphases) requires synergistic control of electrolyte interactions at the inner Helmholtz plane (IHP) and stress-adaptive interfacial architectures. Herein, a hierarchical dual-coating strategy integrating polyaniline (PANi) and laser-induced graphene (LIG) on SiO x anodes addresses this challenge. PANi layer selectively enriches fluorinated ethylene carbonate (FEC) at the IHP via dipole-dipole interaction, enabling preferential FEC reduction at 1.3 V (vs. Li/Li + ) to form LiF-dominated SEI. Theoretical calculations confirm higher FEC adsorption density and stronger adsorption energy on the hierarchically dual-coated SiO x /LIG/PANi-2 (−0.33 eV) versus bare SiO x (−0.09 eV). Meanwhile, LIGʼs 3D porous conductive scaffold dissipates stress, sustaining structural integrity under repeated expansion. The optimized SiO x /LIG/PANi-2 anode achieves 1812.5 mAh g −1 initial capacity with 90.5 % initial Coulombic efficiency at 0.1 A g −1 and retains 87.7 % capacity after 1000 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 , demonstrating exceptional electrochemical stability. Post-cycling analyses further validate the homogeneity of LiF-rich SEI, robust mechanical resilience, and exceptional electrode integrity. This atomic-scale IHP regulation, harmonized with macro-scale stress engineering, offers scalable strategies for silicon anodes in high-energy-density batteries.

Silicon is a promising anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high specific capacity and low cost. However, its practical application is severely hindered by significant volume expansion during lithiation and delithiation, which causes mechanical stress and instability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). These issues lead to poor cycling performance and low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), posing substantial challenges for commercial implementation. Herein, we propose an innovative strategy of co-derived fluorinated SEI pre-construction through chemical prelithiation, employing a 2-fluorobiphenyl-lithium-dimethyltetrahydrofuran (2-F-BP-Li-2MT) system designed for silicon-carbon (Si@C) anodes. Unlike conventional prelithiation methods that solely compensate for lithium loss, simultaneously forming a robust SEI layer enriched with lithium fluoride (LiF) components directly on the surface of Si@C. The co-derived fluorinated SEI exhibits a unique “fluorine-homogeneous” structure during cycling, significantly enhancing mechanical durability and facilitating rapid Li + transport. The chemically prelithiated Si@C anodes with co-derived fluorinated SEI (Pr-F-Si@C) achieve a high ICE of 99.5 % and remarkable capacity retention of 86.3 % after 300 cycles. Furthermore, the assembled full cells (LiFePO 4 //Pr-F-Si@C) deliver high energy density (246.3 Wh kg −1 , based on total mass) and stable cycling performance. This work provides critical insights into interface design and prelithiation, providing new pathways toward practical high-energy and long-life Si-based batteries.

A NaF-Sn hybrid interfacial layer with a bottom-enriched Sn gradient is constructed on sodium metal anodes. • The Sn gradient forms a sodiophilic nucleation zone that enables regulated bottom-up Na deposition. • A homogeneous NaF matrix provides a robust artificial SEI with suppressed side reactions. • The synergistic gradient alloy–fluoride architecture effectively suppresses dendrite growth. • Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 ||NaF-Sn@Na full cells deliver ultra-long cycling stability (23,000 cycles at 20C, 83.5% capacity retention). Sodium metal represents a promising anode for high-energy batteries, yet it is plagued by an unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and dendrite formation. Herein, we construct a hybrid interfacial layer on sodium metal that features a substrate-enriched Sn gradient and a homogeneous NaF matrix (denoted as NaF-Sn@Na). Within this architecture, the Sn concentration increases toward the Na metal substrate, forming a sodiophilic nucleation zone with a graded Sn distribution that drives uniform Na deposition outward from the substrate. Furthermore, homogeneously dispersed NaF endows the interfacial layer with robust mechanical strength and acts as a barrier between the electrolyte and sodium anode, thereby mitigating parasitic side reactions. The gradient Sn layer alleviates alloying-induced volume expansion and inhibits the fragmentation of nucleation sites, whereas the homogeneous NaF matrix sustains interfacial mechanical stability and enables fast Na + -ion transport. Benefiting from these structural advantages, NaF-Sn@Na symmetric cells achieve highly reversible Na plating/stripping with low overpotential and outstanding long-term cycling stability. More impressively, the full cell paired with a Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode delivers an ultra-long lifespan of 23,000 cycles at 20 C with a high capacity retention of 83.5%. Notably, it maintains excellent operational stability under low N/P ratio condition. This rationally designed gradient alloy/fluoride hybrid structure provides a feasible and practical pathway toward high-stability sodium metal batteries under harsh operating conditions. Synergistic gradient Sn alloying and homogeneous NaF interphase enable regulated bottom-up sodium nucleation and robust interfacial stability, effectively suppressing dendrite growth and parasitic reactions, achieving ultra-long cycling stability of 23,000 cycles in full cells. In this paper, we reported a novel solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation additive, prop-1-ene-1,3-sultone (PES), used in propylene carbonate (PC)-based electrolyte for lithium ion batteries . The effect of PES on the co-intercalation of PC into anode and the battery performance was investigated by energy calculation, cyclic voltammetry and battery charge–discharge test. The theoretical calculations and the voltammograms show that PES can be reduced prior to propane sultone (PS), a practical SEI formation additive for lithium ion batteries. Charge–discharge test shows that the use of PES can suppress successfully the co-intercalation of PC with lithium ions into graphite and the LiCoO 2 /graphite battery using PES exhibits better performance than that using PS as the SEI formation additive.

Lithium metal has attracted extensive attention as a promising anode material for high-performance lithium batteries. However, an unstable and fragile solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) could be formed by the side reactions between Li metal and liquid electrolytes and induce the formation of dendritic growth. Here, we propose a facile strategy to fabricate fluorine- and nitrogen-donating gel polymer electrolytes (FN-GPEs) via the polymerization of hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFBMA) and triazole-based methacrylate (TBMA). A uniform porous structure is formed through the regulation of the ratio of HFBMA and TBMA in the polymer matrix, which is beneficial for absorbing the liquid electrolyte and enhancing the ionic conductivity. More significantly, the FN-GPEs containing abundant fluorinated and nitrided chains could form a stable SEI in situ with the components of LiF and Li3N. This facile strategy can achieve the complementary advantages of LiF- and Li3N-based SEI protective layers and significantly enhance the interfacial stability. Consequently, the FN-GPEs exhibit high porosity, high ionic conductivity, enhanced Li-ion transference number, and a wide electrochemical window, which endow the Li/Li symmetrical cells with excellent cyclic stability, and the LiFePO4/Li batteries show good long-term cycling stability. This work provides a new avenue to construct a stable SEI in situ on Li metal via molecular design to achieve high-performance LMBs.
