Conventional sulfide metallurgy suffers from SO x gas emission and high energy consumption, owing to the multiple-step extraction processes and high temperatures that are above the melting point of the extracted metals. Herein, liquid Cu 2 Sb alloy can be directly electrochemically extracted from the liquid Sb 2 S 3 -Cu 2 S with no sulfide oxides emission in eutectic NaCl-KCl molten electrolyte at 730 °C. The use of Sb 2 S 3 decreases the melting point of Cu 2 S and the Sb decreases the melting temperature of Cu. The Sb 2 S 3 -Cu 2 S mixture experiences three stages in the electrochemical desulfurization process: the insertion of Na + into liquid sulfides, the removal of S 2− and metallization, and finally the formation of uniform liquid Cu 2 Sb alloy. The Sb 2 S 3 -Cu 2 S can be completely electro-converted into Cu 2 Sb at 2.6 V for 6 hours. This study provides a straightforward and environmentally friendly route to electro-synthesize liquid alloys from their molten sulfide minerals. Graphical Paving the way : The conventional pyrometallurgical route extracts copper and antimony metals from their sulfide minerals through roasting, smelting, and refining processes. These steps call for high temperature and generate SO 2 and CO 2 , which will cause intense energy consumptions and pollution. This paper paves a green electrochemical route to prepare liquid Cu 2 Sb alloy from their molten sulfides at 730 °C without SO x (CO 2 ) emissions.

Low energy density remains a major obstacle limiting the development and application of flexible sodium-ion batteries (SIB). Thus, this study aimed to eliminate non-active materials in electrodes, which can be a feasible way to increase the energy density of SIBs. An anode made up of flexible, free-standing SnS 2 /Sb 2 S 3 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composite carbon nanofibers (SnSbS/T-M@CNF), a Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 composite carbon nanofibers cathode (NVP@CNF), and composite gel polymer fiber electrolytes (CGPFE) were successfully synthesized through electrospinning. MXene nanosheets improved the electrical conductivity of the SnSbS/T-M@CNF electrode and absorbed sodium sulfide, inhibiting the loss of S during the reaction. Consequently, the SnSbS/T-M@CNF free-standing electrode could be stably cycled for 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g −1 and maintained a reversible capacity of 397.6 mAh g −1 . Further, the NVP@CNF cathode and CGPFE quasi-solid electrolyte half-cells had an excellent cycle stability and rate performance. The flexible, free-standing SnSbS/T-M@CNF anode and NVP@CNF cathode were assembled into quasi-solid-state full cells to test their application value. The SnSbS/T-M@CNF||CGPFE||NVP@CNF full cell had a very low resistance and could easily power a 3 V LED chest lamp. After 500 cycles, it maintained a discharge capacity of 153 mAh g −1 under a current density of 0.5 A g −1 .

Graphical Heterostructured electrode : Composites of SnS 2 /Sb 2 S 3 heterostructures with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets were synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. The SnS 2 /Sb 2 S 3 heterostructures show fast Na + diffusion kinetics, and the SnS 2 /Sb 2 S 3 @rGO composites exhibit superior rate performance when used as anodes for sodium-ion batteries (see figure). Tin disulfide, as a promising high-capacity anode material for sodium-ion batteries, exhibits high theoretical capacity but poor practical electrochemical properties due to its low electrical conductivity. Constructing heterostructures has been considered to be an effective approach to enhance charge transfer and ion-diffusion kinetics. In this work, composites of SnS 2 /Sb 2 S 3 heterostructures with reduced graphene oxide nanosheets were synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. When applied as anode material in sodium-ion batteries, the composite showed a high reversible capacity of 642 mA h g −1 at a current density of 0.2 A g −1 and good cyclic stability without capacity loss in 100 cycles. In particular, SnS 2 /Sb 2 S 3 heterostructures exhibited outstanding rate performance with capacities of 593 and 567 mA h g −1 at high current densities of 2 and 4 A g −1 , respectively, which could be ascribed to the dramatically improved Na + diffusion kinetics and electrical conductivity.

Severe carrier recombination at the back interface, exacerbated by valence-band misalignment arising from the tunable S/Se composition in Sb 2 (S x ,Se 1−x ) 3 (0 ≤ x < 1) absorbers, remains a critical bottleneck in these solar cells. Here, we address this issue by inserting an Sb 2 S 3 interlayer between the narrow-bandgap Sb 2 (S x ,Se 1−x ) 3 absorber and the PbS hole transport layer (HTL). KPFM and GIWAXS measurements reveal that this Sb 2 S 3 interlayer reduces surface defect density and improves the crystalline quality of the film surface. Moreover, leveraging the complete mutual solubility between Sb 2 S 3 and Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 , TOF-SIMS confirms the formation of a compositionally graded heterojunction from the Se-rich bulk to the S-rich back surface during annealing, creating a continuous energy staircase. Consequently, the hole-extraction barrier is eliminated, the built-in electric field is enhanced, and the depletion region is broadened, accelerating hole collection. This strategy delivers the following performance: for Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 -derived devices, efficiency increases from 6.88% to 9.76%; when extended to the Sb 2 Se 3 -derived case, efficiency rises from 7.77% to 10.03%. These results set new benchmarks for all-inorganic Sb 2 (S x ,Se 1−x ) 3 thin-film solar cells, especially for carbon-electrode devices, and establish a back-interface engineering strategy for Sb 2 (S x ,Se 1−x ) 3 solar cells.

Antimony sulfide (Sb 2 S 3 ) is emerging as a popular photovoltaic candidate for thin-film solar cells due to its large absorption coefficient, suitable bandgap, nontoxic, and earth-abundant nature. The performance of thermally evaporated Sb 2 S 3 devices is severely restricted by interfacial recombination leading to high open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) losses. CdS as electron transport layer (ETL) has overcome this problem, but triggered lower J SC issues due to parasitic absorption loss conceding to its smaller bandgap. Herein, a spray pyrolysis method is adopted for the deposition of a uniform and compact Zn-doped TiO 2 film with tuned energy levels to facilitate charge extraction and transport. The solar cell fabricated with a modified TiO 2 ETL holds superior interface quality, high build-in potential, and suppressed recombination losses, therefore pronouncedly improves the V OC . As a result, the efficiency of the device is boosted from 4.41% to 5.16%, a record V OC of 702 mV for Cd-free full-inorganic Sb 2 S 3 solar cell is achieved. These findings are expected to be implemented in other Sb-chalcogenide solar cells to further enhance the device performance.

Antimony (Sb) is an attractive anode material for lithium-ion batteries with high theoretical capacity. However, its practical application is greatly hindered by the rapid capacity fading due to the large volume expansion during lithiation. Tuning the morphology of active materials at the nanoscale or designing reasonable components is essential to address this issue. Employing an antimony sulfide nanorod as semi-sacrificial template, here, we successfully synthesize one-dimensional MoS 2 sheets-decorated Sb@Sb 2 S 3 @C(MoS 2 -Sb@Sb 2 S 3 @C) nano-structure via facile thermal carbonization of Mo-polypyrrole complex coating film. During annealing, metallic Sb from the partial reduction of Sb 2 S 3 nanorods is embedded into amorphous carbon nanotubes that are derived from polypyrrole and simultaneously MoS 2 nanosheets forms on the surface of Sb-Sb 2 S 3 -C nanostructures. This unique hierarchical tubular composite not only can serve as robust skeleton frameworks for accommodating volume changes of metallic Sb and Sb 2 S 3 during cell cycling, but also are characterized by high electronic conductivity (because of the amorphous carbon nanotubes and metallic Sb) and abundant active sites, both of which are beneficial for the improvement of Li-ion storage properties. As expected, the MoS 2 -Sb@Sb 2 S 3 @C composite exhibit a high specific capacity (1596 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ), high rate capability (481 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 and 355 mAh g −1 at 8 A g −1 ), and stable cycling performance (760 mAh g −1 maintained after 100 cycles at 1 A g −1 ). Our work potentially sheds some light on future development of alloy-type anodes for battery applications.

Optimizing electrode structure, reducing the proportion of inactive substances, and fabricating a flexible free-standing electrode without fluid collection are desirable to enhance the energy density , fast charging, and cycling stability of flexible batteries. In this study, we utilized the biological characteristics of Aspergillus niger to synthesize one-dimensional (1D) Sb 2 S 3 nanoparticle composite N-doped C ribbons. Subsequently, vacuum filtration was employed to blend and assemble these 1D composite C ribbons with Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets into a free-standing flexible anode for Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Using 1D C ribbons can effectively inhibit the stacking of 2D MXenes, thereby facilitating the penetration of Na + into Sb 2 S 3 @NCR through the interlamellar pores. Ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses indicated that the MXene layers were not only physically confined but also effectively suppressed polysulfide diffusion through chemical confinement. Consequently, the energy density and cycling stability of the Sb 2 S 3 @NCR composite electrode were enhanced. The Sb 2 S 3 @NCR/MXene||CGPFE||NVP@CNF full battery, consisting of an Sb 2 S 3 @NCR/MXene anode, free standing NVP@CNF cathode, and PVDF-HFP fiber quasi-solid-state polymer electrolyte prepared via electrospinning, achieved 1,000 stable cycles at a current density of 1 Ag −1 . Additionally, the flexible quasi-solid-state bag-type battery could power an LED lamp at a bending angle of 0°–180°.

Three types of Sb 2 S 3 with different degrees of crystallinity were synthesized via a hydrothermal procedure by adjusting the concentration of hydrochloric acid . The amorphous Sb 2 S 3 sample (A-Sb 2 S 3 ) exhibited nearly 13 times higher photocatalytic activity for the decolorization and biodegradability improvement of MO solution compared with both crystalline samples under visible light (λ > 420 nm). It was verified that MO and Congo Red azo dyes were adsorbed onto A-Sb 2 S 3 by displacing hydroxyl groups (OH − ) to complex with Sb 3+ on A-Sb 2 S 3 , which occurred via σ bonding to the lone pairs of azo nitrogen atoms with Sb 3+ (σ-Sb-( N N )). Moreover, the decolorization rate of MO was positively related to its adsorption onto A-Sb 2 S 3 , and no significant degradation was observed for non-azo intermediates. The predominant photodegradation pathways of MO were reduction and oxidization to sulfanilic acid, NO 3 − and small-molecule acids. On the basis of photoelectron spectra, ESR (Electron spin resonance) measurements and other experimental information, it was proposed that the complexes (σ-Sb-( N N )) could transmit photogenerated electrons and holes to the azo group, breaking the N N bond, causing azo dye decolorization to improve their biodegradability; while on the surface of bare A-Sb 2 S 3 , the strong coordination interaction of OH − with Sb 3+ made OH − groups become the recombination centers for photogenerated electrons and holes during the photocatalytic reaction.

Carbon-coated van der Waals stacked Sb 2 S 3 nanorods (SSNR/C) are synthesized by facile hydrothermal growth as anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). The sodiation kinetics and phase evolution behavior of the SSNR/C anode during the first and subsequent cycles are unraveled by coupling in situ transmission electron microscopy analysis with first-principles calculations. During the first sodiation process, Na + ions intercalate into the Sb 2 S 3 crystals with an ultrafast speed of 146 nm s −1 . The resulting amorphous Na x Sb 2 S 3 intermediate phases undergo sequential conversion and alloying reactions to form crystalline Na 2 S, Na 3 Sb, and minor metallic Sb. Upon desodiation, Na + ions extract from the nanocrystalline phases to leave behind the fully desodiated Sb 2 S 3 in an amorphous state. Such unique phase evolution behavior gives rise to superb electrochemical performance and leads to an unexpectedly small volume expansion of ≈54%. The first-principles calculations reveal distinctive phase evolution arising from the synergy between the extremely low Na + ion diffusion barrier of 190 meV and the sharply increased electronic conductivity upon the formation of amorphous Na x Sb 2 S 3 intermediate phases. These findings highlight an anomalous Na + ion storage mechanism and shed new light on the development of high performance SIB anodes based on van der Waals crystals.

Photocatalytic technology offers a promising “one-stone-two-birds” solution to simultaneously combat energy scarcity and environmental contamination through hydrogen production and pollutant degradation. However, conventional photocatalysts suffer from severe limitations in bifunctional efficiency due to rapid charge recombination, poor visible-light harvesting, and inadequate redox power. Herein, a novel 1D/2D core-shell Sb 2 S 3 @SnIn 4 S 8 S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst is engineered. The unique architecture, featuring Sb 2 S 3 nanorods wrapped by SnIn 4 S 8 nanosheets, achieves (i) maximized interfacial contact and charge transfer pathways, (ii) exposed active sites through high specific surface area, and (iii) directional spatial separation of photogenerated carriers. Crucially, the S-scheme heterojunction drives efficient charge separation while preserving strong redox capability. The Sb 2 S 3 @SnIn 4 S 8 catalyst realizes breakthrough dual-functionality: an outstanding average H 2 evolution rate of 3566.1 μmol g −1 h −1 and an impressive 90.5% degradation efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride under 2 h of visible-light illumination. This performance surpasses the individual components by 7.6-fold (vs. Sb 2 S 3 ) and 4.8-fold (vs. SnIn 4 S 8 ) in H 2 production, highlighting the synergy. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrates broad applicability across diverse pollutant systems. This study provides a scalable platform for developing dual-functional photocatalysts toward sustainable energy-water nexus solutions.

Antimony trisulfide (Sb2S3) is a highly promising anode material for alkali-metal batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and abundant resources. However, severe volume expansion during charge-discharge and low electrical conductivity restrict its electrochemical performance. In this study, Sb2S3@NC core-shell nanorod with hollow feature (H-Sb2S3@NC) was successfully prepared via high-temperature carbonization and secondary sulfidation of the inorganic-organic Sb2S3@PDA composite precursor. It would induce the volatilization of partial Sb2S3 by controlling temperature during carbonization, concurrently forming the inorganic core-shell nanorod structure and its hollow feature. Compared to Sb2S3@NC without hollow feature, H-Sb2S3@NC exhibits superior cycling and rate performance when as anode for sodium-ion (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Specifically, as anode for SIBs, H-Sb2S3@NC retains 517.0 mAh g⁻¹ after 100 cycles at 100 mA g⁻¹ and even delivers 535.5 mAh g⁻¹ at 1000 mA g⁻¹ (Sb2S3@NC: 60.6 mAh g⁻¹ after 100 cycles at 100 mA g⁻¹, 39.7 mAh g⁻¹ at 1000 mA g⁻¹). For PIBs, H-Sb2S3@NC provides 431.1 mAh g⁻¹ after 50 cycles at 100 mA g⁻¹ (Sb2S3@NC: 208.3 mAh g⁻¹ under the same conditions). Ex situ characterizations confirm Sb2S3 undergoes a reversible conversion-alloying reaction during Na⁺/K⁺ storage. The internal voids of H-Sb2S3@NC could effectively buffer volume expansion stress, while N-doping in the NC (nitrogen-doped carbon) layer enhances ion/electron transport. These two factors synergistically ensure electrode structural stability and excellent kinetics. The temperature-controlled microstructure regulation strategy proposed in this study provides an effective approach to addressing the volume expansion problem of Sb2S3-based anodes and optimizing the electrode performance of alkali-metal ion batteries.
