Multifunctional SnSe–C composite modified 3D scaffolds to regulate lithium nucleation and fast transport for dendrite-free lithium metal anodes

Xiaojie Shen,Guangyu Zhao,Xianbo Yu,Huihuang Huang,Ming Wang,Naiqing Zhang

Undesirable lithium dendrite growth limits the application of lithium metal anodes in high-energy storage batteries. Here, multifunctional SnSe–C composite modified 3D scaffolds are constructed to achieve dendrite-free lithium deposition. During the initial lithiation stage, the porous SnSe–C composite converts into a Li–Sn alloy and Li2Se by lithium reduction. The lithiophilic Li–Sn alloy exhibits a low nucleation barrier and realizes homogeneous lithium nucleation. The reductive product Li2Se with a high ionic conductivity facilitates lithium ion transport, which helps realizing the homogeneous lithium ion flux and reducing concentration polarization. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of the Li–Sn alloy and Li2Se, the Li/SnSe–C anode exhibits an ultralong lifespan over 1100 h with a low overpotential of 18 mV. In full-cell configurations with LiFePO4 cathodes, the Li/SnSe–C anode demonstrates enhanced rate capability and cycle stability with a high-capacity retention of 85% over 750 cycles. This work prepares multifunctional SnSe–C composite modified 3D scaffolds to regulate lithium nucleation and transport, which offers new insights and opportunities for developing dendrite-free lithium metal battery technology.

High Thermoelectric Performance Achieved by Manipulating the Band Structure and Lattice Dislocations in n-Type Ge/Pb/Br Codoped Polycrystalline SnSe

Pubao Peng,Yang Geng,Jiajun Nan,Song Li,Dewei Zhang,Qing Lin,Yaru Gong,Guodong Tang

Polycrystalline SnSe has attracted significant attention due to its facile processing, machinability, and scale-up application. However, n-type polycrystalline SnSe consistently exhibits inferior thermoelectric performance compared to p-type polycrystalline, because SnSe is an intrinsic p-type semiconductor. Here, we promoted the thermoelectric performance of n-type polycrystalline SnSe through manipulating the band structure and dislocations. The band convergence and enhanced density of states in the electronic structure of SnSe promoted by Pb/Ge/Br codoping, lead to significant enhanced Seebeck coefficient. The carrier concentration was simultaneously enhanced through Ge/Pb/Br codoping. The combination of a large Seebeck coefficient and the enhanced electrical conductivity gives rise to a high power factor as high as 7.47 μW cm −1 K −2 at 873 K. Furthermore, we found that dopants induce strong atomic strain disturbance in the SnSe matrix because of large differences in atom radius with host elements, leading to the formation of high-density dislocations. The presence of dislocations and nanoprecipitates forms strong phonon scattering centers, effectively scattering phonons and suppressing lattice thermal conductivity. As a result, a high peak ZT of 1.6 has been obtained in n-type Sn 1.04 Ge 0.02 Pb 0.02 Se 0.97 Br 0.03 .

Chemical vapor transport derived SnSe₂ nanowires within multi-walled carbon nanotubes as high-performance conversion-alloying anode for lithium-ion batteries

Hongyan Han,Dan Zhao,Wenhao Zhao,Kaiwen Shi,Yi Liu,Shouwu Guo

SnSe 2 nanowires less than 10 nm diameters were encapsulated in MWCNTs via a chemical vapor transport reaction • In-situ EIS and ex-situ TEM found that stable SEI can form outside MWCNT walls • A stable LIB capacity of 730 mAh g −1 was retained after 400 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 • An energy density of 224.0 Wh/kg with a power density of 580.5 W/kg in full cell (vs. LiFePO₄) were achieved Conversion-alloying anodes such as SnSe₂ offer high theoretical capacity, but its usage is limited by slow kinetics, large volume expansion and unstable solid electrolyte interphase formation. An internal-confinement strategy is reported here: SnSe₂ nanowires grown inside multi-walled carbon nanotube channels via temperature gradient and mineralizer-assisted vapor-phase transport method. Unlike conventional vapor or liquid phase methods that achieve surface decoration, this approach could eliminate active SnSe₂ loss and alleviate volume expansion. The SnSe₂@MWCNTs anode delivers superior cycling stability with 730 mAh g −1 retained after 400 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 and a sound energy density of 224.0 Wh/kg with a power density of 580.5 W/kg in full cells (vs. LiFePO₄). The performance advantage originates from three effects: shortened Li + diffusion paths, elastic buffering with preserved electronic contact by the nanotube walls, and a stable SEI film on the stable carbon walls. These effects are consistent with galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, DFT calculations, and ex-situ TEM. This scalable internal-confinement principle overcomes core limitations of layered dichalcogenide and conversion-alloying anodes, providing a general route to high-energy-density and long-cycle-life lithium-ion batteries. Visible-to-near-infrared photodetectors based on SnS/SnSe2 and SnSe/SnSe2 p−n heterostructures with a fast response speed and high normalized detectivity

Xinfa Zhu,Weishuai Duan,Xiancheng Meng,Xiyu Jia,Yonghui Zhang,Pengyu Zhou,Mengjun Wang,Hongxing Zheng,Chao Fan

The emergent two-dimensional (2D) material, tin diselenide (SnSe2), has garnered significant consideration for its potential in image capturing systems, optical communication, and optoelectronic memory. Nevertheless, SnSe2-based photodetection faces obstacles, including slow response speed and low normalized detectivity. In this work, photodetectors based on SnS/SnSe2 and SnSe/SnSe2 p−n heterostructures have been implemented through a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)−assisted transfer method. These photodetectors demonstrate broad-spectrum photoresponse within the 405 to 850 nm wavelength range. The photodetector based on the SnS/SnSe2 heterostructure exhibits a significant responsivity of 4.99 × 103 AW−1, normalized detectivity of 5.80 × 1012 cmHz1/2W−1, and fast response time of 3.13 ms, respectively, owing to the built-in electric field. Meanwhile, the highest values of responsivity, normalized detectivity, and response time for the photodetector based on the SnSe/SnSe2 heterostructure are 5.91 × 103 AW−1, 7.03 × 1012 cmHz1/2W−1, and 4.74 ms, respectively. And their photodetection performances transcend those of photodetectors based on individual SnSe2, SnS, SnSe, and other commonly used 2D materials. Our work has demonstrated an effective strategy to improve the performance of SnSe2-based photodetectors and paves the way for their future commercialization.

SnSe/SnO2 Heterojunction-Based Single-Sensor Virtual Electronic Nose with Low Reaction Barrier for Trace Identification of Volatile Sulfur Compounds toward Illicit Methamphetamine Trafficking Traceability

Hao Jiongyue,Liu Hangyu,Huang Chun,Ling Faling,Peng Di,Wang Zuodong,Jiang Wei,Zhu Zetao,Horprathum Mati,Yang Rui,Miao Xiangshui,Zhao Xixi,He Yong

Illicit methamphetamine (MA, ice) trafficking poses a severe global threat to public security, while non-contact on-site detection of MA remains a grand challenge due to its ultra-low saturated vapor pressure at room temperature (25 ° C). Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), including hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), methanethiol (CH 3 SH), and dimethyl sulfide (C 2 H 6 S, DMS), are stable characteristic markers released throughout the entire MA production, purification, storage, and transportation chain. Herein, we develop a single-sensor virtual electronic nose based on SnSe/SnO 2 p-n heterojunction for precise VSC identification in illicit MA scenarios. The SnSe/SnO 2 heterojunction, synthesized via a facile liquid-phase ultrasonic method, exhibits significantly enhanced room-temperature H 2 S sensing adsorption kinetics, delivering a high response of 2.57 (response = R a / R g , where R a is the resistance in air and R g is the resistance in the atmosphere, including H 2 S and air) to 2.5 ppm H 2 S in air, a low detection limit of 75 ppb, excellent anti-sulfur poisoning ability, and long-term stability. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we reveal that interfacial charge redistribution in SnSe/SnO 2 optimizes reactant adsorption energy, lowers the energy barrier of electronic modulation during H 2 S interactions to only 0.157 eV, and amplifies the adsorption–desorption kinetic differences between distinct VSCs. By extracting 12-dimensional static features from single-device response curves without any external modulation, we construct a PCA-KNN machine learning framework that achieves an overall identification accuracy of 79.65% for six VSC systems, with an ultra-high accuracy of 96.7% for target H 2 S even in complex mixtures. By circumventing the inter-sensor variance and complexities typical of multi-sensor arrays, this single-sensor virtual electronic nose provides a highly integrated, physically compact, and high-precision solution for on-site non-contact traceability of illicit MA trafficking.

Sn–C and Se–C Co-Bonding SnSe/Few-Layered Graphene Micro–Nano Structure: Route to a Densely Compacted and Durable Anode for Lithium/Sodium-Ion Batteries

Deliang Cheng,Lichun Yang,Renzong Hu,Jiangwen Liu,Renchao Che,Jie Cui,Yanan Wu,Wanyu Chen,Jianling Huang,Min Zhu,Yu-Jun Zhao

Developing anodes with a high and stable energy density for both gravimetric and volumetric storage is vital for high-performance lithium/sodium-ion batteries. Herein, an SnSe/few-layered graphene (FLG) composite with a high tap density (2.3 g cm–3) is synthesized via the plasma-milling method, in which SnSe nanoparticles are strongly bound with the FLG matrix, owing to both Sn–C and Se–C bonds, to form nanosized primary particles and then assemble to microsized secondary granules. The FLG can effectively alleviate the large stress generated from the volume expansion of SnSe during cycling based on its superstrength. Furthermore, as demonstrated by the density-functional theory calculations, the Sn–C and Se–C co-bonding benefitting from the formation of substantial vacancy defects on the P-milling-synthesized FLG enables strong affinity between SnSe nanoparticles and the FLG matrix, preventing SnSe from aggregating and detaching even after long-term cycling. As an anode for lithium-ion batteries, it exhibits high gravimetric and volumetric capacities (864.8 mAh g–1 and 1990 mAh cm–3 at 0.2 A g–1), a high rate (612.6 mAh g–1 even at 5.0 A g–1), and the longest life among the reported SnSe-based anodes (capacity retention of 92.8% after 2000 cycles at 1.0 A g–1). Subsequently, an impressive cyclic life (capacity retention of 91.6% after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g–1) is also achieved for sodium-ion batteries. Therefore, the SnSe/FLG composite is a promising anode for high-performance lithium/sodium-ion batteries.

Built–in electric field and atomic–level interfacial channels synergistically drive Type–I to Type–II transition and directed carrier separation in 2D/2D CeO2/SnSe heterojunction

Xiangchen Kong,Xuyang Dong,Shijie Hong,Kaiyue Wang,Yuming Tian

Photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production is a key approach to addressing the energy crisis. However, Type-I heterojunctions are limited by issues such as low photogenerated carrier separation efficiency, weak intrinsic electric fields at the interface, and a scarcity of active sites on the surface. To address these issues, this study proposes a synergistic strategy combining “interface electric field engineering” and “surface molecular engineering”: A 2D/2D CeO 2 /SnSe heterojunction is first constructed via a stepwise hydrothermal method. Subsequently, ammonium hexachlorostannate(IV) ([SnCl 6 ] 2- ) is introduced onto the heterojunction surface via electrostatic adsorption. After subsequent drying, these complexes undergo conversion to form Sn-O-Ce bonds at the interface, achieving “molecular welding” and enhancing interfacial coupling. Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements confirm the successful establishment of the built-in interfacial electric field. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal that this built-in electric field drives photogenerated electrons from SnSe across the interface and into the more negative conduction band of CeO 2 , enabling the composite material, which originally exhibited Type-I band alignment, to achieve a Type-II-like charge separation pathway under illumination. Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution tests indicate that the hydrogen evolution rate of the optimized material has increased twenty-fold. This work provides both experimental and theoretical grounds for the regulation of the band structure of heterojunctions through interfacial chemical engineering, as well as for the development of highly efficient photocatalysts.
