At present, the toxicity prediction of mixtures mainly focuses on the concentration addition (CA) and independent action (IA) based on individual toxicants to predict the toxicity of multicomponent mixtures. This process of predicting the toxicity of multicomponent mixtures based on single substances or low component mixtures is called down-to-top method in this study. However, due to the particularity of some toxicants, we have to use the top-to-down idea to obtain or eliminate the toxicity of some components from mixtures. For example, the toxicity of toxicants is obtained from the toxicity of a mixture with, especially toxic, cosolvent added. In the study, two top-to-down methods, the inverse CA (ICA) and inverse IA (IIA) models, were proposed to eliminate the effects of a certain component from multicomponent mixtures. Furthermore, taking the eight binary mixtures consisting of different shapes of cosolvents (isopropyl alcohol (IPA) having hormesis and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)) and toxicants (two ionic liquids and two pesticides) as an example, combined with the interaction evaluated by CA and IA model, the influence of different shapes of components on top-to-down toxicity prediction was explored. The results showed that cosolvent IPA having hormesis may cause unpredictable effects, even at low concentrations, and should be used with caution. For DMSO, most of the toxicant's toxicity obtained by ICA and IIA models were almost in accordance with those observed experimentally, which showed that ICA and IIA could effectively eliminate the effects of cosolvent, even if toxic cosolvent, from the mixture. Ultimately, a frame of cosolvent use and toxicity correction for the hydrophobic toxicant were suggested based on the top-to-down toxicity prediction method. The proposed methods improve the existing framework of mixture toxicity prediction and provide a new idea for mixture toxicity evaluation and risk assessment.

The construction of hollow metallic microspheres with rationally designed building blocks of the metal shell is a promising way to achieve low density and functionality control, but the microengineering of the metallic structures on a micrometer spherical surface is a great challenge. In the present work, a novel and simple calcination-induced aggregation strategy is developed to realize the distribution status and microstructure control of Co-Cu bimetal building blocks assembled on a hollow glass microsphere support, and thus a series of low-density (0.58 g cm −3 ) dual shell composite hollow microspheres are constructed with gradient in electromagnetic property depending on the calcination temperature (CT). The optimized microwave shielding performance can be achieved at a CT of 500 °C, while further increasing CT to 700 °C leads to an interesting conversion from microwave shielding to absorption with an optimized effective absorption bandwidth of 4.64 GHz at a low matching thickness of 1.33 mm. The mechanism underlying the CT-dependent metallic shell structure variation and further the decisive effect of the shell structure on the microwave response behavior are proposed based on a series of contrast experiments.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with low reflection features have become necessary for a new generation of electronic devices to reduce secondary electromagnetic pollution . Here, a novel strategy is adopted to provide flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite films with ultra-low reflection EMI shielding performance by constructing a double-layer structure with uniformly dispersed carbon fibres (CFs) in the upper layer as an impedance-matching absorption layer and continuous graphene fibres (GFs) located at the bottom layer as a conductive reflection layer. The resulting specific structure significantly reduces the reflectivity of the composite film at extremely low carbon conductive fillers (0.01 wt% CFs and 1.00 wt% GFs) through the process of “absorption-reflection-reabsorption” when incident electromagnetic waves (EMWs) pass through the composite film: the total shielding effectiveness ( SE Total ) achieves 34.4 dB at 18.0 GHz, while the shielding effectiveness of reflection ( SE R ) is only 0.1 dB, and reflection coefficient ( R ) is as low as 0.018. This phenomenon indicates that 1.8% of the incident EMWs are reflected in the propagation process when 99.96% are attenuated. In addition, the shielding mechanism of the double-layer EMI shielding composite films with low reflection features is studied in depth. This study provides a reliable idea for designing flexible EMI shielding materials with ultra-low reflection to alleviate secondary electromagnetic radiation pollution.

Graphical Prêt-à-porter : An all-natural strategy for simple, green, and scalable extraction silk nanofibers in natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) has been developed. With retained nanostructures and properties, the utilization of the silkworm silk nanofibers to prepare macroscopic materials with cytocompatibility and flexibility for biomedical devices and green electronics is envisaged. With typical nanofibrous structure, silks spun by silkworms and spiders are the representative fibrous proteins that embody excellent mechanical properties and biological functions. However, it is still a challenge to directly extract silk nanofibers (SNFs) from natural silk fibers, to retain their nanostructures and properties, by a human- and environment-friendly approach for practical applications. Here, an all-natural strategy for simple, green, and scalable extraction of silkworm and spider silk protein nanofibers in natural deep eutectic solvents has been developed. The liquid-exfoliated SNFs have adjustable diameters from 20 nm (at the single SNF scale) to 100 nm and could be dispersed in water and organic solvents, enabling the production of useful macroscopic biomaterials. The free-standing SNF membranes made from silkworm silk nanofibers (SSNFs) exhibited cytocompatibility, flexibility, and excellent mechanical performance, providing the ability to fabricate sustainable materials for tissue engineering and green electronics. Moreover, the SSNF could be used as a green and efficient dispersant of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and the SSNFs/MWCNTs nanocomposite membranes could be used in wearable devices to monitor human activities.

Perovskite/silicon tandem photovoltaics offer a compelling pathway to surpass the efficiency limits of single-junction silicon. However, perimeter-induced recombination and shunting in n-type TOPCon bottom cells remain a critical barrier to achieving high tandem performance. Here, we present a simple and scalable Nafion-based edge-engineering approach designed to selectively passivate the damaged wafer perimeter without altering the poly-Si/SiOₓ contact. The ionomer forms a stable ionic barrier that suppresses edge-related recombination, thereby improving carrier collection in the bottom sub-cell. As a result, the Nafion-passivated n-type TOPCon cells achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.37%, with reduced series resistance and enhanced external quantum efficiency (EQE) across the visible and near-infrared range. Integration with a high-performance nip-structured FAPbI₃ perovskite top cell (23.62%) enables the four-terminal (4 T) tandem configuration to reach a combined PCE of 30.01% under a bifacial operation with a rear albedo of 0.3 sun. Furthermore, PVsyst simulations at the system level indicate a high-performance ratio of 0.859, highlighting substantial energy-yield potential and supporting the practical viability of this tandem architecture for large-scale deployment.

Ultrathin graphitic C 3 N 4 (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanofibers about 5–10 nm in diameters have been rapidly prepared via alkali-catalyzed hydrolysis of bulk g-C 3 N 4 in concentrated alkaline aqueous solution. The morphologies of the g-C 3 N 4 nanostructures can be facilely controlled by varying reaction time, and a scissoring mechanism is proposed to explain the formation process involved. The g-C 3 N 4 nanofibers can serve as a novel fluorosensor for rapid Fe 3+ detection with high sensitivity and selectivity.

To realize high-yield and long-term desalination of seawater and high salinity water, salt-resistant wood-based solar steam generators with a special top-down water supply device are developed by delignification of balsa wood for enhancing its hydrophilicity followed by vacuum-assisted impregnation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and MXene nanosheets and lyophilization. Thanks to the incidental gain of environmental energy, the sufficient top-down water supply, the porous channels and intrinsic hydrophilicity of the delignified wood, and the efficient solar light absorption and solar-thermal energy conversion of the dispersed MXene nanosheets, the resultant PVA/MXene-decorated wood (WPM) solar-driven water evaporator achieves a water evaporation rate of as high as 4.31 kg m −2 h −1 under 1-sun irradiation. A superior solar-driven desalination rate of 3.83 kg m −2 h −1 is achieved during evaporating a brine water with 25 wt% of NaCl for 8 h. The sufficient top-down water supply dilutes the high concentration of brine on the WPM evaporator surface and drains it promptly, avoiding the salt deposition and hence achieving the performance stability during the long-term solar-driven desalination. The high evaporation efficiency and the satisfactory long-term salt-resistance are demonstrated by desalinating an aqueous solution of 15 wt% NaCl over 100 h under 1-sun irradiation with an exceptional average evaporation rate of 4.24 kg m −2 h −1 .

The brewing process is a crucial step in determining the flavor profile of green tea infusions. However, the flavor differences arising from top-brewing and bottom-brewing methods remain poorly understood, and the underlying mechanisms are largely unexplored. In this study, GC-MS and sensory analysis were employed to investigate the flavor differences in Shucheng Little Cymbidium tea infusions under varying water temperatures and brewing methods. Subsequently, the variations in major polyphenolic compounds were analyzed, and the potential causes of flavor differences were explained from the perspective of the interactions between EGCG and key aroma compounds. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed that compounds such as geraniol, nonanal, and methyl salicylate serve as important markers for discriminating between different brewing conditions. Moreover, EGCG exhibited a significant binding effect with compounds such as geraniol and nonanal, driven by hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. This binding may regulate the transfer of aroma compounds from tea leaves to the infusion during brewing, thereby shaping distinct sensory characteristics. These findings provide a molecular-level rationale for empirical techniques in traditional tea art. More importantly, it inspires researchers to pay attention to the crucial role of the tea infusion matrix in determining flavor.

The rapid advancement of bio-integrated electronics in recent years has been paralleled by increased interest in the research of stretchable, elastic, conductive, and multi-dimensional sensing electronic skin (e-skin) due to its potential integration with electronic devices and soft tissues. In this work, we presented the fabrication of a nature-skin derived e-skin, denoted as S-P/G@PU e-skin, achieved through an on-demand "top-down" strategy and a triple structure design, employing integrated in-situ polymerization, impregnation, and encapsulation techniques. The collagen fibers weaved hierarchical 3D structure of natural skin, was strategically employed to host conductive polypyrrole and combined with a binary solvent system of glycerin and water. Subsequently, this composite natural skin was coated with polyurethane films, resulting in the engineering of the S-P/G@PU e-skin. This innovative e-skin exhibited remarkable properties, including high tensile strength (8.76 MPa), excellent elasticity (0–180 %), anti-freezing capacity, moisture retention, substantial conductivity (6.3 S/m), and outstanding multi-dimensional sensing capabilities. Importantly, the S-P/G@PU e-skin functioned as both a slow adaptive resistance strain sensor and a fast adaptive single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator , making it a versatile sensing system that enabled real-time monitoring of various physiological signals from the human body and wide-frequency vibration signals from devices such as cellphones and motors. This study serves as a proof of concept for transforming nature-skin into e-skin, showcasing the potential for integrated wearable electronics , artificial intelligence, and human-machine interfaces.

The challenge posed by the chemical stability of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) renders its biological treatment a complex endeavor. Despite the isolation and characterization of numerous DMF-degrading bacterial strains, their limited adaptability to diverse environments has resulted in suboptimal efficacy in the treatment of actual DMF-containing wastewater. This research aims to address this predicament by employing a “top-down” approach to engineer a synthetic bacterial community termed DMF syn . The mineralization of 0.5 % (v/v) DMF (∼4725 mg L −1 ) was efficiently carried out by DMF syn within 4 days. Notably, robust DMF degradation capabilities across a broad spectrum of environmental conditions were observed. In scenarios where N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAC) and N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) coexisted with DMF, degradation followed a sequential pattern: NMP > DMAC > DMF. Through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and metagenomic analysis, potential functional genes and species responsible for DMF degradation were unveiled. The active DMF degraders in DMF syn , including Paracoccus aminovorans bin8, Hyphomicrobium sulfonivorans bin2, Hyphomicrobium zavarzinii bin0, Paracoccus zhejiangensis bin23, and Aquamicrobium lusatiens e bin4, were substantiated by metaproteomic analysis. Furthermore, another DMF-mineralizing bacterium Aminobacter niigataensis DMFA1 was isolated from DMF syn . Molecular dynamics simulations indicated that the preference for DMAC over DMF at the community level is dictated by the substrate specificity of DMFases from Sphingosinicella microcystinivorans bin6. By harnessing a multi-omics approach, conducting pure culture studies, and employing molecular simulations, an intricate mechanism governing DMF degradation and substrate preference within the DMF syn was elucidated.

In the aim to realize high performance semitransparent fully coated organic solar cells, printable electrode buffer layers and top electrodes are two important key technologies. An ideal ink for the preparation of the electrode buffer layer for printed top electrodes should have good wettability and negligible solvent corrosion to the underlying layer. This work reports a novel organic–inorganic composite of phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) and PEDOT:PSS that features excellent wettability with the active layer and printed top Ag nanowires and high resistibility to solvent corrosion. This composite buffer layer can be easily deposited on a polymer surface to form a smooth, homogeneous film via spin-coating or doctor-blade coating. Through the use of this composite anode buffer layer, fully coated semitransparent devices with doctor-blade-coated functional layers and spray-coated Ag nanowire top electrodes showed the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.01% with an excellent average visible-light transmittance (AVT) of 50.3%, demonstrating superior overall characteristics with a comparable performance to and a much higher AVT than cells based on a thermally evaporated MoO3/Ag/MoO3 thin film electrode (with a PCE of 5.77% and AVT of 19.5%). The current work reports the fabrication of fully coated inverted organic solar cells by combining doctor-blade coating and spray coating and, more importantly, demonstrates that a nanocomposite of a polyoxometalate and conjugated polymer could be an excellent anode buffer layer for the fully coated polymer solar cells with favorable interfacial contact, hole extraction efficiency, and high comparability with full printing.

Top-blocking & bottom-transporting electrolytes boost stability and ion transport. • Synergistic interfacial H-bond network and ion exchange for the durability of devices • All-printed electrode-electrolyte system for curved-pattern display in packages. Electrochromic technology holds immense promise for diverse applications, yet electrolytes struggle to reconcile stability with high ionic conductivity, impeding device performance optimization. Inspired by the multilayered structure of lichens, functionally complementary bilayer gel electrolytes are fabricated: the upper hydrophobic PMMA-based ionic liquid gel serves as a robust barrier layer, while the lower hydrophilic PVA-based hydrated gel constructs continuous ionic transport pathways, with interfacial strong adhesion enabled via an intermolecular hydrogen bond network. The Lewis acid-base mechanism modulates the ionic solvation environment through electron pair donation and acceptance, facilitating active ion dissociation and migration. This design yields remarkable device performance enhancements: coloring/bleaching response times shorten to 4.3 s/3.2 s, capacitance retention remains 91.35% after 1000 charge-discharge cycles and 90.15% post 500 bending cycles. The electrolyte exhibits excellent print compatibility, screen-printable on curved substrates; its transparent bilayer (transmittance ≥95%) can be patterned into “SUST” for on-demand information display and concealment, providing a novel technical avenue for electrochromic devices in smart packaging, anti-counterfeiting and beyond.
