The nanoparticle density (PD) of the substrates is crucial for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance. Here, bottom-up SERS substrates based on rough gold nanorods (R-Au NRs) with different PD are fabricated and their SERS property are investigated. In particular, R-Au NRs are deposited on the Si wafer from sparse to dense through electrostatic interaction and from monolayer to multiple layers by interface self-assembly technique. It is found that the SERS intensity increases dramatically with increasing PD and remains almost unchanged when the PD increases to 241.22 counts µm −2 , and the limited penetration depth of laser is the reason for the intensity saturation. Additionally, similar results are observed in the smooth Au NRs substrates, re-confirming the PD-dependent SERS performance. Importantly, the SERS activity of R-Au NRs substrates is higher than smooth Au NRs substrates in each PD, indicating that R-Au NRs can produce stronger electromagnetic field enhancement, which is supported by the theoretical simulation results. Finally, it is demonstrated that the optimal SERS substrates can be effectively utilized for the quantitative measurement of thiram in soil. Briefly, the PD of substrates has a great impact on SERS activity, which offers an idea for the design of highly efficient SERS substrates.

The great harm of thiram residue in soil to environment and human health is usually ignored. Due to the complexity of soil compositions, the detection of thiram residue in soil faces considerable difficulties. In this work, a highly sensitive and selective surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on the triangular silver nanoplates (TSNPs) with small size and sharp corners is developed and used for the detection of thiram residue in soil for the first time. These TSNPs are synthesized by replacing the conventional seeds in the seed-mediated chemical reduction route with the tiny and uniform triangular silver nuclei (TSN) which can provide more growing space for generating sharp corners during the growth of TSNPs. It is interesting that the TSNPs with the smaller size have the better SERS performance. The possible mechanism behind this phenomenon is explained by the electromagnetic enhancement theory. On the basis of the Raman activity of the smallest TSNPs, a SERS-active substrate is prepared for detecting the thiram residue in soil. The thiram solution detection shows that the limit of detection (LOD) of these smallest TSNPs is lower than other nanoparticles, such as nanospheres, nanocubes, etc. For sensing the thiram residue in soil, the addition of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) realizes the specific adsorption of thiram by TSNPs. This method exhibits a good linear response from 0.12 to 4.8 μg/g with a low LOD of 90 ng/g, which is better than conventional methods. This work shows the great potential of the small TSNPs as a novel SERS substrate and its broader applications in pesticides detection.

A low-cost and environmentally friendly polydopamine modified layered double hydroxides (PDA/LDH) was prepared, and a novel fluorescent “turn-off” sensor was established for rapid detection of thiram. The material was characterized using the transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photo-electronic spectroscopy (XPS) and other methods. The electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and S-π interaction between PDA/LDH and thiram were mostly attributed to the sensing of thiram. Through the internal filter effect (IFE), the fluorescence of the PDA/LDH could be effectively quenched by thiram. The limit of detection (LOD) was determined to be 25 μg L −1 under optimal conditions, while the concentration of thiram in the range of 50–50000 μg L −1 exhibited a satisfactory relationship with the change in fluorescence intensity. Furthermore, the prepared probes were successfully applied on apple and pear samples, in which the recovery rate could reach 92.06–104.90 %. The synthesis of PDA/LDH was quite simple, and the detection of thiram could be accomplished right away when the sensor and thiram were combined. All the above results demonstrated the high potential of the established method in practical applications.

A dual-functional biomimetic surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate composed of grating/microcavity arrays (GCA) was developed for on-site monitoring of pesticides on fruit peels and in surface water. The hierarchical GCA structure was fabricated by molding a negative polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) replica from lily petals, followed by the generation of grating wrinkles through oxygen plasma treatment. After the deposition of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) through magnetron sputtering, the optimal Ag NPs@GCA substrate exhibits high sensitivity, good uniformity, and reproducibility. Moreover, due to its optical transparency, mechanical stability, and hydrophobic properties, the Ag NPs@GCA substrate combined with a handhold Raman spectrometer can be used for on-site determination of pesticides in real samples. The limit of detection (LOD) for thiram on the surfaces of apples, pears, and cherry tomatoes were 2.86 × 10 −7 , 5.03 × 10 −7 , and 7.25 × 10 −7 M, respectively. For malachite green, the LODs were 9.04 × 10 −8 M in lake water and 4.83 × 10 −7 M on fish scales. The results indicate the developed dual-functional Ag NPs@GCA substrate has great potential for applications in food safety assessment and environmental pollutant monitoring. Graphical abstract

A surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate with high sensitivity for the rapid determination of pesticide residues was developed by combining silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and a fibrous swab. The SERS substrate was prepared simply by forming a SERS-active area on the section of fibrous swab and centrifuge tube with a soak-absorb approach. Rhodamine 6 G (R6G), a common SERS probe molecule, was used for performance characterization of the prepared SERS substrate that was shown to have high sensitivity, good stability and good reproducibility. Due to its good flexibility, the prepared SERS substrate was used to wipe contaminated surfaces for residue extraction. High sensitivity for detecting trace-level pesticides was verified for thiram. The limits of detection (LODs) for thiram on apple, grape and eggplant epidermis were calculated to be as low as 0.5313, 0.5768, and 0.5495 ng·cm−2, respectively, nearly 2 orders of magnitude below the maximum residue limit (MRL) for pesticide in food issued by the National Food Safety Standard of China. In addition, there was a linear relationship between the SERS intensity and the concentration of thiram in these three samples, indicating the good potential of this substrate for quantitative SERS analysis.

We report a surface magnetic solid-phase extraction–surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SMSPE-SERS) method based on silver-nanoparticle-coated Fe 3 O 4 /chitosan (Fe 3 O 4 /CS@Ag) microspheres as the substrate, and this method integrates all steps from sample pretreatment to detection. Fe 3 O 4 /CS was synthesized by a one-step solvothermal method in which chitosan (CS) was used as a surface modifier and adsorbent. Fe 3 O 4 /CS@Ag microspheres exhibit both adsorption ability and SERS activity. Therefore, we used the SMSPE-SERS method to detect pesticide residues on fruit peel. The procedures of capturing, separating and enriching pesticides, as well as detection, are all integrated. In addition, the SERS substrate allows label-free detection of thiram pesticide in both fruit peel and apple juice. Owing to the uniform distribution of Ag NPs and the adsorption ability of CS, the thiram-detection sensitivity was sufficiently high to detect the lowest concentration of 1.2 ng/cm 2 , which was significantly lower than the maximum thiram residue limit (7 μg/cm 2 ) in fruits. The method was comparable to high-performance liquid chromatography with recovery ranging from 86.60 to 109.69 %.

Magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) spheres acting as a core were evenly decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and coated with a shell of a metal organic framework (MOF) of type MIL-100(Fe). The resulting hybrid nanomaterial of type Fe 3 O 4 -Au@MIL-100(Fe) hybrid is shown to be a viable new SERS substrate. The integration of magnetic core, build-in plasmonic gold nanoparticles and a MOF shell endows the Fe 3 O 4 -Au@MIL-100(Fe) with highly efficient magnetic separation and enrichment ability, abundant interparticle hotspots, and significant chemical enhancement effect. This leads to a large enhancement, and greatly improved reproducibility of the SERS signals as shown for Malachite Green (MG) and the fungicide thiram. MG in solution can be quantified with a 50-fold lower detection limit (0.14 nM for peak at 1398 cm −1 ) and largely improved reproducibility (RSD = 9%, 1398 cm −1 ) when compared to the use of (a) AuNPs anchored on MIL-100(Fe) (RSD = 27%, 1186 cm −1 ), or (b) AuNPs embedded in MIL-100(Fe) (RSD = 36%, 1398 cm −1 ). The method was applied to the quantitation of MG and thiram in spiked water samples. The lower limits of detection are 4.4 nM for MG (1398 cm −1 ) and 15 nM for thiram (1380 cm −1 ), respectively, and signals’ RSDs are 13% (1398 cm −1 ) and 5% (1380 cm −1 ) for MG and thiram, respectively. The substrate is recyclable.
