Catalytic coupling of CH4 with potent greenhouse gas CHF3 to vinylidene fluoride (VDF) was investigated over composite catalysts. Carbon-partitioned LaF3–BaF2 catalysts were prepared by PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride)-mediated calcination. During catalyst preparation, PVDF functions as the fluorine source and carbon source. Compared with the catalysts prepared by the conventional HF co-precipitation method, the transformation of LaF3 and BaF2 to Ba1−xLaxF2+x solid solution is inhibited as Ba and La are separated by carbon layers derived from the decomposition of PVDF. The Ba1−xLaxF2+x phase is not favorable for the coupling of CH4 with CHF3 to VDF. In addition, PVDF-mediated calcination facilitates the formation of LaOF which is one of the key species for coupling of CH4 with CHF3 to VDF. O− species, which is the most active oxygen species for the activation of CH4, increases significantly following PVDF-mediated calcination due to the formation of LaOF. Consequently, the formation rate of VDF over the catalyst derived from PVDF-mediated calcination is 3.6 times higher than the HF co-precipitation catalyst at a reaction temperature of 700 °C. The formation rate of the HF co-precipitated catalyst declines to nearly half of the initial rate in a time-on-stream of 15 h. By contrast, only slight deactivation is observed over the catalyst prepared by PVDF-mediated calcination. The present work provides a promising strategy for the preparation of composite catalysts.

With the rapid growth in the number of Internet of Things (IoT) nodes, developing self-powered systems that combine high energy conversion efficiency with stable power supply capabilities has become a key challenge. To address the issues of narrow operating bandwidth, poor environmental adaptability, and limited output power in traditional single-mechanism energy harvesters, this paper proposes a piezoelectric, electromagnetic hybrid energy harvester (PEEH) based on a bidirectional magnetic excitation mechanism. Guided by the finite element method, the rotor’s magnetic circuit structure was optimized to create a periodically alternating bidirectional “push-pull” magnetic excitation. This effectively suppresses asymmetric oscillations in the cantilever beam, enabling stable harmonic motion and achieving efficient electromechanical coupling with a β-phase-rich poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) thin film. Thanks to this synergistic design, the PEEH achieves an output voltage of 112 V at a wind speed of 12 m/s, and its total power reaches 38.5 mW at 17 m/s. By further integrating an adaptive under-voltage lockout power management circuit, a fully self-powered wireless monitoring system was developed that enables periodic Bluetooth data transmission even under intermittent wind conditions. This study demonstrates that synergistically enhancing piezoelectric and electromagnetic energy conversion through magnetic circuit optimization can effectively improve wind energy utilization efficiency and system power supply stability, providing an efficient, stable, and grid-independent self-powered solution for next-generation wireless IoT nodes.

Dielectric nanocomposites composed of a polymer matrix with high electric breakdown strength and inorganic ferroelectric nanofillers with large maximum electric displacement (Dmax) have recently attracted much attention due to their high power density, superior flexibility, and good fatigue endurance. However, their discharge energy density and energy efficiency are limited because of the high remnant displacement (Dr) and small Dmax − Dr values of the ferroelectric fillers. Compared with ferroelectrics, antiferroelectrics exhibit much lower Dr (near zero) and far larger Dmax − Dr values, and thus if they are used as the fillers of the dielectric composite, a larger discharge energy density and higher energy efficiency may be obtained simultaneously. Based on this, in this work, Pb0.97La0.02(Zr0.50Sn0.45Ti0.05)O3 (PLZST) antiferroelectric nanoparticles (∼200 nm in diameter) coated with a dense and robust dopamine layer are prepared in order to develop dopamine-modified PLZST filler/poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) polymer nanocomposites with superior energy storage properties. The experimental results indicate that optimizing the filler content leads to a small Dr (0.61 μC cm−2), large Dmax − Dr value (6.14 μC cm−2), and high electric breakdown strength (3136 kV cm−1), as a result of which, the PLZST/P(VDF-HFP) nanocomposites filled with 5 wt% dopamine-modified PLZST nanoparticles simultaneously exhibit a large discharge energy density of 9.39 J cm−3 and high energy efficiency of 82%. These energy storage properties are superior to those of most ferroelectric filler (including nanowires and nanofibers prepared by complicated methods)/polymer nanocomposites with a single-layer structure. Our work not only proves that, antiferroelectric nanoparticles are excellent fillers that can be comparable to, or even better than, ferroelectric nanowires and nanofibers prepared by very complicated methods, for energy-storage inorganic/polymer dielectric composites, but also provides a convenient and effective way to prepare and design flexible dielectric capacitors with superior energy storage capacity.

Inspired by the stomatal feature of plant leaves, a photo-responsive membrane was developed to enhance the removal of irreversible membrane fouling and to control molecule release. Photo-responsive polymers were prepared by reacting the amine group of 4-amineazobenzene with about 3, 5 and 9 out of 12 carboxylic groups of PMAA which was grafted from P(VDF-CTFE) with a certain length. Subsequently, high-flux photo-responsive membranes (PRMs) were prepared from the heterogeneous polymers with different contents of photo-switchable azobenzene following a non-solvent-induced phase-inversion protocol. The pore size and surface hydrophilicity of PRMs could be reversibly increased by switching visible light to UV irradiation, which dramatically enhanced the backflushing efficiency on PRMs under UV irradiation. The “light-cleaning” process could recover more than 90% of the irreversible flux decline caused by typical organic foulant (BSA) and biological foulant (E. coli) on PRMs. The higher the content of azobenzene, the more obvious the pore size and hydrophilicity variation after light switching but the smaller the absolute pore size observed for PRMs. On the other hand, the light-switching gates of PRMs enabled the controlled release of molecules with different sizes. The novel PRM provided an efficient solution to mitigate irreversible membrane fouling and a light-triggered molecule release protocol, which would improve the membrane performance and further expand the application field of the membrane.

Electroactive membranes are attracting attention due to their piezo-, pyro-, and ferro-electric properties. Here we report the fabrication of electroactive membranes from poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) P(VDF-TrFE), i.e. co-polymers of vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene. A new P(VDF-TrFE)/Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/Dimethylacetamide (DMAc)/water system was used to tailor the membranes’ structure. Since hot treatment in the air could induce defect on membrane structure (i.e., fracture, shrinkage, and rolling), the annealing was conducted in the glycerin. Thanks to the high boiling point and moderate surface tension of glycerin, the integrity of P(VDF-TrFE) membranes was preserved during the annealing process. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , differential scanning calorimetry , and scanning electron microscopy experiments revealed that the relative abundance of the β–crystalline phase increased with the annealing temperature when the latter was above the Curie temperature . P(VDF-TrFE) membranes annealed at 130 °C exhibited high crystallinity with grain-like surface, which resulted from multiple stacks of edge-on lamellae, and possessed excellent physicochemical properties of filtration. The anti-fouling performance of pristine and annealed P(VDF-TrFE) membranes was tested by dead-end filtration with a 13.5 mg/L humic acid (HA) solution. Annealed P(VDF-TrFE) membranes achieved greater fluxes and had superior anti-fouling properties, which was attributed to the weaker hydrophobic attraction between HA and the aligned β–phase crystals. This work provides a facile method for designing highly crystalline P(VDF-TrFE) membranes with potential applications in filtration systems, smart wearable devices , and medicine.

Electrocaloric (EC) cooling represents a promising solid-state approach for next-generation thermal management. However, achieving substantial temperature modulation remains a challenge due to intrinsic material limitations and inefficient energy conversion. Herein, we focus on microstructure regulation to enhance thermal conductivity and EC performance. A hydroxyl-functionalized Ba0.63Sr0.37Zr0.01(Ti0.999Mn0.001)0.99O3 (BSZMT-OH) and h-BNNS-OH composite was designed, with enhanced interfacial hydrogen bonding to optimize electric field response in a P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) matrix. Finite element analysis (FEA) and piezo response force microscopy (PFM) reveal strengthened interfacial coupling, which facilitates rapid domain switching kinetics by amplifying tetragonal P4mm phase responses. These enhancements yield a peak EC temperature change (ΔT) of 1.59 K under a low electric field of 40 MV/m in the optimized 6% BSZMT-OH@4 h-BNNS-OH (6@4BNNS) composite. Integrated into a double-layer four-section electrocaloric cooling (DL 4 EC) device, it cools from 70 to 23 °C in 23 s, outperforming water cooling. Our findings offer insights into EC mechanisms and present a high-performance thermal management strategy.

Flexible piezoelectric sensors offer excellent wearability and easy integration, making them attractive for smart devices and health monitoring. However, their low piezoelectric coefficient (d33) limits widespread use. In this study, surface-coated barium titanate nanoparticles (mBT) with a core–shell structure were synthesized and incorporated into P(VDF-TrFE) to form composite films. The film containing 10 wt % mBT showed a dielectric constant of 20 at 103 Hz, a 31% increase in residual polarization (7.82 μC·cm–2), a 30% reduction in coercive field (40 MV/m), and a 58% enhancement in quasi-static d33 (41 pC/N) compared with the pure polymer. These improvements arise from enhanced interfacial interactions and phase compatibility due to the mBT core–shell design, which promotes β-phase formation in the polymer matrix. A flexible sensor fabricated from the optimized composite displayed superior pressure sensitivity and linearity (R2 > 0.999). Its dynamic d33 and voltage coefficient (g33) reached 42 pC/N and 244 mV·m/N, improving by 66% and 35%, respectively. The sensor accurately detected low-frequency vibrations (0.5–50 Hz), highlighting the potential of core–shell nanoparticle modification for developing high-sensitivity, low-frequency flexible piezoelectric sensors.

By blending P(VDF-TrFE) with PVDF-HFP and introducing a small amount of ZnO, a composite film system with both mechanical flexibility and electrical responsiveness was constructed. The effects of the TrFE/HFP ratio and hot rolling temperature on the mechanical behavior and strain-induced electrical response of the films were systematically studied. The results show that the introduction of HFP improves film ductility, while a higher TrFE content enhances load bearing capability and electrical response. Among the investigated compositions, the TrFE80/HFP20 composite containing 1.08 wt % surface-modified ZnO showed a good balance between electrical response and mechanical compliance. After hot rolling, the films processed at 65 °C showed stable mechanical behavior at low to moderate strain and produced clear open circuit voltage signals under stretching. Clear electrical signals were also observed under thermal perturbation. Based on these results, the selected composite film was used to fabricate flexible strain sensors, demonstrating promising potential for practical applications.

The efficiency of strain-mediated magnetoelectric (ME) coupling is fundamentally governed by the fidelity of stress transfer across the interface between magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases. In polymer-based nanocomposites, however, mechanical energy is often dissipated due to viscoelastic damping at interfaces, which severely limits the energy transduction efficiency. Herein, we fabricated flexible P(VDF-TrFE)-based ME nanocomposites through an intrinsically anchored strategy to enhance the interfacial stress transfer. By directing the growth of magnetic CoFe 2 O 4 on self-assembled s PPTA/BTAc aromatic backbones, we created intrinsically anchored magnetic nanofibers (IAM NFs) with skeleton-integrated nanostructure. In this geometric-chemical hybrid structure, molecular templates are interwoven with the magnetic phase, providing an aromatic backbone for direct stress conduction and abundant functional groups for molecular-level interlocking with polymer chains. Consequently, the composite achieves highly efficient strain-mediated ME coupling of 42.8 mV·cm −1 ·Oe −1 at an exceptionally low filler content of 1 wt%. By optimizing interfacial efficacy rather than increased filler content, the ME nanocomposite films maintain exceptional lightweight and flexibility, evidenced by breaking elongation of 23.3%. This work provides a strategic pathway for developing high-performance, lightweight, flexible electronics through rational interfacial engineering and morphological control.

With the rapid development of communication, electronics, medical, and energy industries in modern society, film capacitors have garnered widespread attention and undergone significant growth. However, the low energy density (Ue) resulting from low breakdown strength (Eb) significantly limits the application of thin-film capacitors. In this work, we use a low-cost and effective dip-coating method to apply boron nitride (BN) layers onto the outer layers of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)/barium titanate (P(VDF-HFP)/BT) composite films to prepare boron nitride-poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene/barium titanate-boron nitride (BN-P(VDF-HFP)/BT-BN) composite films with a sandwich structure that exhibits extremely highEbandUe. The experimental results show that the sandwich-structured BN-P(VDF-HFP)/BT-BN films containing 7.5 wt% BT nanoparticles obtained 530 MV/mEband 18.12 J/cm3Ue, both of which are much higher than those of the corresponding monolayer films. In addition, the finite element simulation results show that the designed sandwich-structured films can reduce local field strength distortion, decrease leakage current, and suppress the development of breakdown channels, thereby significantly improvingEbandUe. In summary, this study presents a low-cost and effective method for enhancing the breakdown strength and energy density of thin-film capacitors.
