In this work, a photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) with a gas diffusion TiO 2 photoanode is proposed to directly convert chemical energy contained in volatile organic compounds into electricity by using solar energy. The gas diffusion TiO 2 photoanode is prepared by coating TiO 2 nanoparticles onto Ti mesh, whose intrinsic porous structure allows for gaseous pollutants to directly transfer inside the photoanode and thereby enhances mass transport. The feasibility of the developed gas diffusion photoanode is demonstrated by degrading toluene as a model gaseous pollutant. It is shown that the newly-developed PFC yields better electricity generation and toluene removal efficiency due to the enhanced mass transport of toluene and the eliminated interference of gas bubbles. The short-circuit current density and maximum power density of the PFC with a gas diffusion TiO 2 photoanode (0.1 mA/cm 2 and 0.02 mW/cm 2 ) are about 3.3 times and 4 times as those of the bubbling PFC (0.03 mA/cm 2 and 0.005 mW/cm 2 ), respectively. Both the discharging performance and toluene removal efficiency increase with increasing the light intensity and electrolyte concentration, while there exists an optimal gas flow rate leading to the best performance. The present work provides an innovative strategy for clean processing of volatile organic compounds while recycling the contained chemical energy.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) could effectively remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when coupled with wet scrubbing process. However, it still faces challenges in achieving deep oxidation of VOCs due to the limited production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, we present the utilization of permanganate (KMnO 4 ) as a co-oxidant to enhance VOCs oxidation in UV/persulfate (PDS)/KMnO 4 system. The removal efficiency of a targeted VOC, toluene, kept high at above 90% throughout the entire long-term reaction of 4 h, which was much higher than that of UV/PDS and UV/KMnO 4 . Notably, the in-situ formed manganese oxide (MnO x ) acts as a catalyst in UV/MnO x and UV/MnO x /PDS, facilitating the generation of various ROS and thereby enhancing VOCs degradation. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments indicated that sulfate radical (SO 4 − ), hydroxyl radical (HO ), superoxide radical ( O 2 − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were the main ROS generated in the UV/PDS/KMnO 4 system. The overall oxidation process can be divided into three stages: the UV/KMnO 4 -dominated stage, the UV/MnO x /PDS-dominated stage, and the UV/MnO x -dominated stage. Correspondingly, HO played a major role in toluene oxidation in the UV/KMnO 4 -dominated and UV/MnO x -dominated stages, with the contributions of 48% and 52%, respectively. Meanwhile, SO 4 − played a more significant role in the UV/MnO x /PDS-dominated stage, with a contribution of 59%. Three main reaction pathways involving electron abstraction, HO addition and benzene ring opening were proposed based on the intermediates identified by proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). This study provided a deep understanding of KMnO 4 in improving the oxidation capacity of UV-based AOPs for VOCs degradation, emphasizing the importance of in-situ formed MnO x for promoting multiple ROS generation.

Both Fe(III) and fatty acids are ubiquitous and important species in environmental waters. Because they are amphipathic, many fatty acids are surface active and prone to enrichment at the air–water interface. Here, we report that by using nonanoic acid (NA) as a model fatty acid, coexisting Fe(III), even at concentrations as low as 1 μM, markedly enhanced the photochemical release of NA-derived volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as octanal and octane into the air. Further studies indicated that the surface-enriched fatty acids dramatically increase the local concentration of Fe(III) at the water surface, which enables Fe(III)-mediated photochemical reactions to take place at the air–water interface, and the VOCs facilely produced by fatty acid photooxidation can then be released into the air. Moreover, the product distribution in the Fe(III)-mediated reactions was largely different from that in other photochemical systems, and a mechanism based on photochemical decarboxylation is proposed. Considering that the coexistence of fatty acids and Fe(III) in the environment is common, the enhanced photochemical release of VOCs by surface-enriched fatty acids and Fe(III) may be an important channel for the atmospheric emission of VOCs, which are known to play an essential role in the formation of ozone and secondary organic aerosols.

Developing visible-light-responsive TiO 2 -based photocatalysts provides a promising avenue for addressing VOCs pollution. Herein, polydopamine (PDA) template pyrolysis waste was in-situ up-cycled for simultaneous growth of N and C co-doped hollow porous TiO 2 microreactors (H-NT-0.2) in air. The resulting H-NT-0.2 with a highly intact hollow structure, thin spherical shell (∼ 13 nm) and high porosity possesses the highest N and C co-doping ratio and largest oxygen vacancies (OVs) amount, leading to the highest concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) among all H-NT- x . A crucial role of OVs in enhancing H 2 O adsorption for the generation of hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH) has been revealed by DFT calculations. As a result, H-NT-0.2 shows the highest photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) efficiency of flowing acetaldehyde gas (90%) under visible light irradiation, which exceeds 3.5 times of commercial TiO 2 (P25)), and outperforms most of the reported photocatalysts. The growth mechanism, as well as the photocatalytic reaction pathways, were analyzed based on TG-MS and in-situ DRIFTS results, respectively. This work provides an economical, green and feasible strategy to develop advanced visible-light-responsive photocatalysts for aldehydes VOCs abatement in practical applications.

Porous carbon foam (PCF), known for its high surface area and abundant functional groups, is considered to exhibit superior adsorption capacity and wide applicability for gases. Wheat, being a widely cultivated and easily accessible crop globally, contains abundant carbon elements. In this study, wheat powder served as the carbon precursor, and β-alanine, rich in amino and carboxyl groups, was introduced into the hierarchical pore structure of wheat powder. Subsequently, the material underwent secondary hydrothermal treatment with the activation agent potassium hydroxide (KOH), resulting in hydrothermal wheat powder PCF (HWPCF) rich in a three-dimensional interconnected structure with layered pores as the representative feature. This structural treatment increased the specific surface area (2278 m 2 ·g −1 ) and total pore volume (1.17 cm 3 ·g −1 ) of PCF, accelerating the rapid mass transfer of gas molecules and significantly enhancing the utilization of adsorption sites in the modified PCF. HWPCF exhibited outstanding adsorption performance for acetone (608.7 mg g −1 ) and n-hexane (517.6 mg g −1 ). In addition, the modified PCF showed good adsorption capacity for CO 2 (4.99 mmol·g −1 ). This study highlights the effective modification of expired wheat powder with β-alanine, reducing the overall carbon footprint of the production process and achieving the reuse of waste in an environmentally friendly manner.

The development of granular adsorbents for the efficient capture of low-concentration volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from humid air are highly desirable. Herein, we report the synthesis of granular ZIF-8 monolith ( mono ZIF-8) featuring high surface area (2312 m 2 /g) and mesoporous structure by shortening the synthesis time and optimizing the reactant concentrations, which was further carbonized at 1000 °C to obtain porous granular carbon. As-prepared ZIF-8-C1000 exhibited high surface area (1623 m 2 /g), hierarchical porous structure (0.5–10 nm) and hydrophobicity (water contact angle 145.8°), thus it showed very high adsorption performance for trace VOCs like toluene and hexanal under both dry and humid conditions (relative humidity 30 %-80 %) at 25 °C, much higher than commercial activated carbon (AC) such as BPL-AC, coconut shell AC, and representative MOFs including HKUST-1, mono HKUST-1, mono MIL-100(Fe), MIL-101(Cr) and MOF-235. Additionally, ZIF-8-C1000 could be rapidly regenerated under mild temperatures (60 °C to 80 °C), while BPL-AC requires a higher desorption temperature and more time due to disordered porosity. The exceptional adsorption and desorption performance of granular ZIF-8-C1000 over BPL-AC can be attributed to its interconnected micropores and mesopores.

The complexity of in situ volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection demands high selectivity and anti-interference capability of electronic noses (E-noses). Multivariant virtual sensor array (VSA) is a new generation of E-noses under research to overcome the insufficient VOCs selectivity limitation of existing electronic noses and alleviate the issue of sensor drifts. In this paper, a frequency-amplitude dual-parameter modulation strategy is presented on a wireless electrodeless quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (WE-QCM-D) to realize the recognition and analysis of VOC mixtures and complex real-world analytes with a single multivariant VSA E-nose, by probing the gas dynamic sorption in a sensitive film at various scales of oscillating shear displacements and obtaining multiple partially independent responses to VOCs. Ten VOC analytes from alcohols, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons were classified with accuracies of above 95% for both interclass and intraclass discriminations. Additionally, a discriminating accuracy of 95% has been achieved on VOC mixtures, and their component concentrations were predicted with coefficients of determination above 0.9. For practical testing, the system was exposed to the headspace VOCs of banana, pineapple, and mango under different concentrations. It recognized different fruits and identified the ripen state of bananas based on the detection of their volatiles. The dual-parameter modulated WE-QCM-D paves a promising multivariant way to realize online real-time VOCs monitoring with high performance on selectivity and quantitative analysis.

In this study, we report efficient gas–solid phase photocatalytic reaction by employing controlled periodic illumination, intense pulsed light (IPL) technique, at extremely low duty cycles. Compared with traditional continuous illumination, IPL exhibits superior photocatalytic performance, excellent economic advantages and extremely low duty cycles. Up to now, it is the first time that IPL has been applied in gas–solid phase photocatalytic reactions coupled with multiple photocatalysts. It is demonstrated by experiments that the pulsed xenon lamps can release a large number of photons in short pulsed time, leading to a much stronger photocurrent response than that triggered by a conventional xenon lamp. Taking photocatalytic benzenes degradation as the target reaction, in-situ EPR confirmed that the IPL system can generate a large number of reactive radicals, and thus can degrade benzenes efficiently even with almost negligible illumination period.

Desorption is a critical process in the recovery or post-treatment of adsorbents saturated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, the thermal desorption behaviors for eight VOCs on hypercrosslinked polymeric resin (HPR) and macroporous polymeric resin (MPR) were investigated through isothermal desorption and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Compared with MPR, HPR with more micropores exhibited a lower desorption rate constant, lower desorption efficiency and higher desorption activation energy due to the strong binding energy generated between VOCs molecules and narrow micropores. As the polarizability of VOCs increased, the desorption rate constants on two porous polymeric resins decreased, while the desorption activation energy showed an incremental trend. Excellent linear correlations were observed between VOC polarizability and desorption rate constants ( R 2 = 0.957 for HPR and R 2 = 0.940 for MPR) as well as between VOC polarizability and desorption activation energy ( R 2 = 0.981 for HPR and R 2 = 0.969 for MPR). Furthermore, a polyparameter linear free energy relationship (PP-LFER) was developed to explore the influences of intermolecular interactions on desorption behaviors of VOCs on porous polymeric resins. The results indicated that the dispersive interaction, which is directly related to polarizability of VOCs, was the primary factor influencing the desorption activation energy of VOCs on porous polymeric resins. The find from this study helps evaluate fleetly and availably the desorption properties of VOCs based on their polarizability.

The geometric interplay in heterogeneous catalysis plays a crucial role in determining the catalytic performance. Based on the stronger affinity of Pd for ceria (CeO 2 ) than for titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) found in this work, we strategically engineered distinct Pd local environments by controlling the architecture of CeO x on TiO 2 through adjusting Ce content. At low Ce content, Pd preferentially assembles onto CeO x islands that are interspersed on TiO 2 ; while at high Ce content, Pd predominantly anchors onto the extensive CeO x surface. The former structure, enriched with CeO x -TiO 2 interface, exhibits superior capability in C-H bond cleavage and O 2 activation, leading to outstanding performance in the oxidation of carbon-containing gases such as light volatile organic compounds (VOCs; e.g., ethane and ethylene) and carbon monoxide (CO). In contrast, the structure dominated by continuous CeO 2 networks shows markedly lower activity. Combined analyses indicate that Pd 2+ species act as the primary active sites, and the consistent activity trend across differently Ce-modified catalysts in VOCs and CO oxidation can be explained by shared mechanistic steps, particularly through common CO and bicarbonate species intermediates. This work provides fundamental insight into the relationship between interfacial geometry and catalytic function.

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely employed as separable and highly efficient adsorbents in VOCs (volatile organic compounds) pollution in the air. However, due to poor stability and easy hydrolysis in water, traditional MOFs cannot yet be used for the removal of VOCs in wastewater. Here, a novel series of magnetic Fe–Cu bimetallic MOFs possessing dual hydrophilic and hydrophobic functionality was prepared for VOCs removal in wastewater. The materials were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicate that both of the morphological and adsorption performance of magnetic Fe–Cu bimetallic MOFs are highly dependent on the molar ratio of ethylenediamine to 4,4-bipyridine used during synthesis. When the molar ratios of ethylenediamine to 4,4-bipyridine are 5:1, 1:1, and 1:5, the morphologies of prepared magnetic Fe–Cu bimetallic MOFs are gravel-like, cobble-like and calcite-like, respectively. They are named as magnetic gravel-like Fe–Cu metal organic frameworks (Mag-Gra-Fe-Cu MOFs), magnetic cobble-like Fe–Cu metal organic frameworks (Mag-CoL-Fe-Cu MOFs) and calcite-like Fe–Cu metal organic frameworks (Mag-CaL-Fe-Cu MOFs). Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacity of Mag-Gra-Fe-Cu MOFs, Mag-CoL-Fe-Cu MOFs and Mag-CaL-Fe-Cu MOFs could reach up to 487.80–621.12 mg/g, 549.45–666.67 mg/g and 598.80–724.64 mg/g, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the adsorption of VOCs onto the magnetic Fe–Cu bimetallic MOFs followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R² = 1) and the Langmuir isotherm model (R² > 0.999). Consequently, the magnetic Fe–Cu bimetallic MOFs developed in this work represent a viable and efficient option for removing VOCs from wastewater. The development of low-cost and efficient catalysts for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) oxidation remains a major challenge in industrial catalysis, particularly under humid conditions where the stability of traditional cluster-doped catalyst is often compromised. Metal-functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which integrate the catalytic activity of metal centers with the structural stability of COFs, offer a promising platform for designing robust catalysts. In this work, a series of transition metal-coordinated hexaazatriphenylene frameworks (TM-HAT, TM = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) were designed for the oxidation of typical non-halogenated VOCs. Among them, Mn-HAT and Co-HAT demonstrated superior catalytic activity and CO 2 yield. Notably, Mn-HAT achieved complete conversion of ethyl acetate at 220 °C, together with remarkable long-term stability (70 h) and exceptional water resistance—retaining nearly 100% efficiency under 5 vol% water vapor. This exceptional water tolerance originates from the stable coordination environment of the Mn nodes within the crystalline HAT, which prevents active-site leaching and structural degradation under humid conditions. Comprehensive characterization revealed that the outstanding performance of Mn-HAT originates from its high lattice oxygen content (O latt /O ads = 1.70), abundant pyrrolic/pyridinic N species, and superior low-temperature reducibility. Furthermore, in-situ DRIFTS and post-reaction analysis confirmed that the catalytic oxidation follows the Mars–van Krevelen (MVK) mechanism, involving lattice oxygen consumption and the reduction of high-valence Mn species (Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ to Mn 2+ ). This study highlights the significant potential of TM-HAT as efficient and stable catalysts for industrial low-temperature VOCs removal under realistic, humid conditions.
