Effects of oxide addition on structure and properties of WC–10Co cemented carbide obtained by in situ synthesized powder

Xiao-Chun Deng,Kai-Fei Wang,Guo-Hua Zhang

Combining spray drying and in situ synthesized technology, WC–10Co cemented carbide with uniform composition was prepared by vacuum sintering. The effects of Al 2 O 3 and additions of different rare-earth oxides (La 2 O 3 , Y 2 O 3 and CeO 2 ) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of WC–10Co were investigated. As the Al 2 O 3 content increased from .5 to 2 wt%, the hardness of the sintered sample increased, whereas the relative density and fracture toughness decreased. Compared with the addition of .5 wt% Al 2 O 3 , the WC–10Co alloy with .5 wt% rare-earth oxides had higher hardness. In addition, compared with the alloy without an inhibitor (.80 μm), after adding .5 wt% Al 2 O 3 , La 2 O 3 , Y 2 O 3 and CeO 2 , the WC grain sizes were reduced to .73, .65, .71 and .62 μm, respectively, which indicated that the addition of Al 2 O 3 and rare-earth oxides could refine WC grain during sintering. Among these additives, CeO 2 had the best effect. With the addition of .5 wt% CeO 2 , the hardness and the fracture toughness increased from 1299 to 1710 HV 30 and from 16.18 to 18.90 MPa m 1/2 , respectively.

Densification characteristics, microstructure, and mechanical properties of h-BN@Al₂O₃/WC-based cemented carbides prepared by spark plasma sintering

Tao Guo,Qiulin Niu,Lu Jing,Tao Zhong,Chenyi Zhu,Binghui Wu,Shengfeng Zhang,Shibo Guo

To improve h-BN dispersion and the local interfacial environment in WC-based cemented carbides, an h-BN@Al₂O₃ composite powder was prepared by heterogeneous nucleation and calcination, with h-BN as the designed core phase and Al₂O₃ as the designed outer-layer component. The composite powder was incorporated into WC-based cemented carbides consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS), and the effects of powder content and sintering temperature on phase composition, microstructure, mechanical properties, and densification characteristics were examined. The h-BN@Al₂O₃ content was closely related to WC grain size, microstructural uniformity, and porosity. At 1300 °C, the specimen containing 5 vol% h-BN@Al₂O₃ had a fine, relatively homogeneous microstructure with few visible pores; higher additions increased porosity and local particle agglomeration. For the 5 vol% composition, raising the sintering temperature from 1100 to 1400 °C increased the relative density and reduced visible porosity. At 1500 °C, local WC grain coarsening, microstructural inhomogeneity, and residual porosity increased, accompanied by lower mechanical properties. The best overall performance was obtained with 5 vol% h-BN@Al₂O₃ at 1400 °C: a relative density of 99.1 ± 0.4%, flexural strength of 871.3 ± 26 MPa, Vickers hardness of 1912.1 ± 38 HV, and fracture toughness of 9.86 ± 0.2 MPa·m 1/2 .

Zewen Li,Hao Chen,Liyong Chen,Jianbo Zhang,Fan Zhang,Xiaolong Xie

HighlightsWhat are the main findings?Y doping reduces WC/Co interfacial energy and enhances bonding strength. Y-W orbital hybridization forms strong covalent bonds at the atomic interface.Material achieves dual improvement: Hardness (1454 HV) and toughness (9.84 MPa·m1/2).Optimal 0.5 wt.% Y refines grains and uniformly distributes the Co binder phase. Wear resistance is significantly improved, with the lowest wear rate at 0.5 wt.% Y.What are the implications of the main findings?Provides an atomic-scale mechanism for rare earth-enhanced cemented carbides and offers a design strategy for co-optimizing hardness and toughness in composites;Validates the integration of first-principles calculations with experimental validation;Identifies an optimal Y doping threshold for superior comprehensive properties. This study aims to clarify the optimization mechanism of yttrium (Y) doping on the interfacial bonding and macroscopic properties of WC/Co cemented carbides, with the goal of achieving materials that combine high hardness, high toughness, and excellent wear resistance through interfacial regulation. Combining first-principles calculations and experimental verification, the interfacial energy, density of states, and charge density of WC/Co and WC/CoY interfaces were systematically investigated. Three alloys (WC-10Co, WC-10Co-0.5Y, and WC-10Co-1Y) were prepared, and the effects of Y addition were quantitatively evaluated through microstructural characterization, mechanical testing, and tribological experiments. The calculation results indicate that Y doping reduces interfacial energy, enhances interfacial bonding, and increases surface energy, which contributes to improved toughness. At the atomic scale, the orbital hybridization between Y and W promotes the formation of strong covalent bonds at the interface, thereby enhancing interfacial bonding strength. The experimental results show that the introduction of Y significantly improves the overall performance of the material, with the alloy containing 0.5 wt.% Y exhibiting the best performance. Its Vickers hardness reaches (1454 ± 1.3) HV, fracture toughness is (9.84 ± 0.15) MPa·m1/2, and the wear rate is as low as 0.794 × 10−5mm3·N−1·m−1.

Co-WC Heterojunction Nanoparticle Composites with Graphene Embedded in Porous Carbon Nanospheres as an Electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Yi-Yi Liu,Zhifeng Ye,Zhaogen Zhu,Zhaotong Ni,Qianqun Xu,Dingsheng Yuan

Exploring high-performance, stable, and economical noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is an urgent mission. Herein, the graphene-wrapped Co-WC heterojunction nanoparticle embedded in porous carbon nanospheres (Co-WC@G/PCSs) is fabricated via calcination of a CoWO4/PCSs precursor. With an optimized PCSs amount and carbonization temperature, sphere-like Co-WC@G/PCSs exhibit superior alkaline HER activity with a small overpotential (67 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2), a low Tafel slope (56 mV dec–1), and a high exchange current density (0.48 mA cm–2). Moreover, the Co-WC@G/PCSs also exhibit high stability in alkaline solution, showing no significant degradation after 10 000 cycles. The excellent HER performance is mainly attributed to abundant heterointerface interfaces between Co and WC, which can tailor the electronic configuration and enlarge exposed active sites. Our work suggests a facile and large-scale strategy to synthesize abundant heterointerface interfaces and graphene-coated electrocatalysts for designing an efficient noble-metal-free electrocatalyst.

Remarkable synergistic effects of Mg2NiH4 and transition metal carbides (TiC, ZrC, WC) on enhancing the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2

Linglong Yao,Xuanyu Lyu,Jiguang Zhang,Yana Liu,Yunfeng Zhu,Huaijun Lin,Yao Zhang,Liquan Li

Nanostructuring and catalyzing are effective methods for improving the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 . In this work, transition-metal-carbides (TiC, ZrC and WC) are introduced into Mg–Ni alloy to enhance its hydrogen storage performance. 5 wt% transition-metal-carbide containing Mg 95 Ni 5 (atomic ratio) nanocomposites are prepared by mechanical milling pretreatment followed by hydriding combustion synthesis and mechanical milling process, and the synergetic enhancement effects of Mg 2 NiH 4 and transition-metal-carbides are investigated systematically. Due to the inductive effect of Mg 2 NiH 4 and charge transfer effect between Mg/MgH 2 and transition-metal-carbides, Mg 95 Ni 5 -5 wt.% transition-metal-carbide samples all exhibit excellent hydrogen storage kinetic at moderate temperature and start to release hydrogen around 216 °C. Among them, 2.5 wt% H 2 (220 °C) and 4.7 wt% H 2 (250 °C) can be released from the Mg 95 Ni 5 -5 wt.% TiC sample within 1800 s. The unique mosaic structure endows the Mg 95 Ni 5 -5 wt.% TiC with excellent structural stability, thus can reach 95% of saturated hydrogen capacity within 120 s even after 10 cycles of de-/hydrogenation at 275 °C. And the probable synergistic enhancement mechanism for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation is proposed.

Optimizing WC-10Co Cemented Carbides with High-Entropy (Ti, Cr, V, Nb, Mo)(C, N) Inhibitor: Microstructure, Mechanics, and Wear Resistance

Xin Tang,Ruipeng Mao,Fan Zhang,Yongzhong Jin,Wei Su,Wu Jiang,Junhao Wang

Cemented carbides play a pivotal role in diverse industrial sectors, and controlling abnormal grain growth and regulating the homogeneity of the Co binder phase are the key challenges to improve their properties. In this study, WC-10Co alloy was prepared for the first time by low-pressure sintering technique using (Ti, Cr, V, Nb, Mo)(C, N) high entropy powder as an inhibitor, focusing on the effect of trace additions of (Ti, Cr, V, Nb, Mo)(C, N) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy as well as friction and wear properties. The results show that under the conditions of sintering at 1420 ℃, a pressure of 3   MPa, and a holding time of 1   hour, the alloy with 0.2   wt.% high-entropy inhibitor exhibited the best comprehensive properties, with a flexural strength of 3752   MPa, a Vickers hardness of 1679 HV 30 , and a fracture toughness of 13.07   MPa·m 1/2 . During the stable stage of tribological testing, the average friction coefficient reached 0.6195, and the wear rate was as low as 1.34×10 -7 mm 3 /(N·m). The toughening and strengthening mechanism of the (Ti, Cr, V, Nb, Mo)(C, N) - modified alloy is mainly attributed to the significant refinement of WC grains, WC lattice contraction, and the formation of Co-based solid solutions by the high-entropy inhibitor. However, excessive addition deteriorates the overall performance. This study provides experimental data and technical insights for the development of a new generation of cemented carbides with high strength, high toughness, and excellent wear resistance.

Rational design of self-supported WC/Co3W3N/Co@NC yolk/shell nitrogen-doped porous carbon catalyst for highly efficient overall water splitting

Shunli Li,Chenxi Xu,Qiulan Zhou,Zhen Liu,Zhixiong Yang,Yu Gu,Yaping Ma,Weijian Xu

Designing high-efficiency catalysts with earth-abundance elements for overall water splitting (OWS) in alkaline electrolyte has been unsettled owing to the non-negligible overpotential of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). An electrocatalyst with decent HER and OER activities in the same electrolyte is crucial for sustainable energy storage and conversion device. In this work, a nitrogen-doped porous carbon confined yolk/shell OWS catalyst of WC/Co 3 W 3 N/Co@NC has been prepared via calcination polyhedron encapsulation structure PW 12 @ZIF-8 @ZIF-67 generated by the epitaxial method. Because of the optimized chemical composition , the derived WC/Co 3 W 3 N/Co@NC multisite catalyst has outstanding OWS performance in 1 M KOH solution. For example, to reach a current density of 10 mA cm -2 , it only needs low overpotentials of 141 and 280 mV for the HER and OER, respectively. By using the easy operation and classical bubble extraction method , we find that the Faraday efficiencies of the catalyst for HER and OER are 94.3% and 97.4%, respectively. Moreover, taking advantage of the micropores and mesopores in the yolk/shell structure, it exhibits enhanced stability and promoted diffusion kinetics. This work initiates an effortless approach to the synthesis of the highly efficient yolk/shell carbon-based OWS electrocatalyst .

Effects of co-precipitated La2O3-Y2O3 additive ratios on the densification, microstructure and mechanical properties of coarse-grained WC-10Co cemented carbides

Jiang Hao-li,Yang Ya-ting,Lu Yu-gen,Yang Jia-mian,Sun Guo-quan,Cui Hong-zhi,Min Fan-lu,Wang Cong-xu,Xu Chuan-hua,Li Gai-ye,Zhang Jian-feng

Coarse-grained WC-10Co cemented carbides are indispensable for demanding applications such as rock drilling and shield tunneling, yet their development is restricted by poor mixing uniformity and the inherent hardness-toughness trade-off. To address this issue, a series of coarse-grained WC-10Co cemented carbides was developed by systematically tuning the ratios of La 2 O 3 and Y 2 O 3 additives via a co-precipitation and hydrogen reduction. The microstructures and mechanical properties were highly sensitive to this ratio. The optimal balance was achieved at a La: Y atomic ratio of 1:2, yielding a hardness of 86.6 HRA, a bending strength of 2201 MPa, and a remarkable fracture toughness of 25.72 MPa·m 1/2 . This improvement is mainly attributed to a synergistic interface-pinning mechanism. Specifically, trapezoidal La 2 O 3 and spherical Y 2 O 3 particles preferentially segregate at the WC/Co phase boundaries, thereby inhibiting abnormal WC grain growth and suppressing the martensitic transformation of ductile face-centered cubic cobalt (Co FCC ). Consequently, optimizing the additive ratio effectively alleviated the hardness-toughness trade-off, providing an effective paradigm for tailoring high-performance cemented carbides through precise powder-mixing engineering. Preparation of Ni–B composite coating doped with hydrothermally modified synthetic WC@MoS2 powders via ultrasonic-assisted jet electrodeposition for corrosion protection

Anhua Ren,Min Kang,Xiuqing Fu,Fan Zhang,Wanting Yang,Tianyu Pan

This work aims to improve nanoparticle agglomeration, which hinders the application of nanoparticles in enhancing coating properties. Superhydrophobic and corrosion-resistant Ni–B– MoS 2 @WC composite coatings were prepared with the help of a simple and inexpensive combination of hydrothermal and electrodeposition techniques. Hydrothermal treatment at 180°C for 24h greatly reduced the specific surface area and improved the hydrophobicity of WC@MoS 2 powder. The WC@MoS 2 powder showed good dispersion stability in the electrolyte solution. Ni–B/WC@MoS 2 composite coatings were prepared through codeposition with metallic Ni 2+ under the action of ultrasonic waves. WC@MoS 2 powder doping induced the coatings to exhibit a selective orientation of the (111) crystal plane. Ultrasound-induced cavitation increased the participation of nanopowders in the adsorption codeposition of Ni ions. After WC@MoS 2 powder doping, the surface roughness of the prepared composite coatings furthered significantly, facilitating the wettability transition. This work investigated the relationship between the surface wettability of the coatings prepared via jet electrodeposition and WC@MoS 2 powder doping under auxiliary ultrasonic power. In addition, the effect of surface hydrophobicity on corrosion resistance was examined through electrochemical corrosion tests. The enhanced corrosion resistance of the composite coatings benefits from their enhanced surface roughness and superhydrophobicity. This research offers a proven strategy for improving nanopowders' wettability and composite coatings' corrosion resistance.

A novel electrochemical sensing platform based on covalent organic frameworks/WC/NH2-MWCNT for highly selective determination of acetaminophen and 4-aminophenol

Zongyan Lu,Hao Guo,Xiaoqin Wei,Lei Sun,Zhilan Pan,Bingqing Liu,Yinsheng Liu,Jiaxi Xu,Jiaying Tian,Wu Yang

In this article, a novel and simple electrochemical sensing platform has been developed for the simultaneous and sensitive determination of acetaminophen (ACOP) and 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The porous covalent organic frameworks (COFs) material with β-ketoenamine-linkage was successfully synthesized via 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (TFP) and 2,6-diaminoanthraquinone (DAAQ) and named as TFP-DAAQ-COF. High conductivity walnut shells-derived carbon (WC), amine-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (NH 2 -MWCNTs) with multiple active sites and TFP-DAAQ-COF were combined to obtain composite materials, which were used to modify bare glass carbon electrodes (GCE) and realize the electrochemical analysis of ACOP and 4-AP. The experiments showed that the composite electrode had a strong synergistic effect and exhibited a good electrocatalytic oxidation ability for the two target analytes. The linearity ranges of ACOP and 4-AP were 0.5 ∼ 200 μM and 1.0 ∼ 250 μM, respectively and the detection limits (S/N = 3) were 0.12 μM and 0.18 μM. In addition, the sensor showed acceptable reproducibility, stability and excellent selectivity. The recovery was satisfactory, when it was used to analyze the contents of ACOP and 4-AP in real samples, indicating that the sensor was feasible in practical applications.

Interfacial engineering in diamond/cu composites: from W-WC single-layer optimization to WCu dual-layer Interface for high-temperature thermal properties and stability

Jie Wang,Xin Wang,Jia Gu,Ruyun Ding,Siying Xu,Wei Chen,Hui Zheng,Xiaoxiao Guo,Peng Zheng,Liang Zheng,Yang Zhang

Diamond/Cu composites are ideal materials for thermal management in high-power electronic devices. The use of W coating can enhance the interfacial bonding of the composites and improve the room temperature thermal performance. However, its high-temperature thermal performance cannot be guaranteed. This study constructs diamond/W-Cu/Cu dual-layer interface structures based on coated W to further optimize the high-temperature thermal performance of the composites. This work synthesized diamond/Cu composites with various interface structures by varying the sintering temperature and time. The results indicate that the W-WC composite interface has a higher thermal conductivity than the W-W 2 C-WC interface structure, and a peak thermal conductivity of 660 W/(m·K) is achieved at an interface structure of 52 nm W-108 nm WC, corresponding to a thermal expansion coefficient of 5.2 ppm/K. A dual-layer interface structure was next constructed. While the results show that the dual-layer interface composites have better high-temperature thermal properties and bonding with the interface. The relative density of the composite was increased by nearly 2.8 % and its thermal conductivity was increased to 698 W/(m·K), while the high-temperature thermal conductivity degradation (at 200 °C) was reduced from 33.5 % to 29.5 %. Additionally, it achieves a 25 % reduction in high-temperature coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and improves thermal stability by 50 %. Its low thermal resistance and high thermal stability provide an innovative solution for the thermal management of high heat flow density electronics.

Enhancing the dry reforming of methane over Ni-Co-Y/WC-AC catalyst: Influence of the different Ni/Co ratio on the catalytic performance

Jun Liu,Yu Zhang,Zhoujie Liang,Guojie Zhang,Ying Wang,Yuqing Zhao,Guoqiang Li,Yongkang Lv

In this paper, a series of bimetallic catalysts with different Ni/Co ratios were prepared by co-impregnation method for application in methane dry reforming reaction. The effects of different Ni/Co ratios on the catalyst performance were investigated. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, H 2 -TPR, TG, TEM and FTIR. The results showed that after the introduction of a certain amount of Co, the synergistic effect between Ni and Co enhanced the active component-carrier interaction, thus improving the dispersion of the active component of the catalyst, reducing the particle size of the metal, and increasing the activity of the catalyst. Meanwhile, the mechanistic study showed that the introduction of Co species with strong oxygen affinity facilitated the formation of oxygen vacancies. It makes the catalysts contain higher lattice oxygen and carbonate species, which was conducive to the elimination of carbon accumulation, thus improving the stability of catalysts. Therefore, the 10Ni-8Co-10Y/WC-AC catalyst exhibited excellent dry reforming of methane (DRM) performance at a Ni/Co ratio of 5:4. The conversions of CO 2 and CH 4 were 95 % and 88 % at 800 °C under atmospheric pressure, respectively.
