Utilization of EDTMPA as an eco-friendly depressant for selective flotation separation of cassiterite from calcite in the oleate system

Yongchao Miao,Shuming Wen,Zhenhao Guan,Qicheng Feng

In this study, the flotation tests revealed that ethylenediamine tetramethylenephosphonic acid (EDTMPA) as a calcite inhibitor has a stronger depression effect than EDTA (ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid) in the cassiterite flotation process, and the selective depression mechanism of EDTMPA was revealed by zeta potential test, TOC test, XPS analysis and DFT calculation . The flotation test results showed that effective separation of cassiterite and calcite could be achieved at pulp pH of 9.0, NaOL concentration of 1.80 × 10 −4 mol/L and EDTMPA concentration of 1.25 × 10 −5 mol/L. The selective adsorption of EDTMPA on the calcite surface was ascribed to the strong interactions between the phosphate ions in the former, and the surface Ca 2+ ions on the latter’s crystal lattice . DFT calculations also confirmed the strong affinity of EDTMPA for calcite and its weak affinity for cassiterite. The results of this study provide an experimental and theoretical background for the sustainable and eco-friendly separation of cassiterite from calcite.

Innovative utilization of 2-(4-Butoxyphenyl)acetohydroxamic acid as collector for the selective separation of rhodochrosite from calcite and dolomite

Kuixin Cui,Nan Duan,Shengming Jin

A novel collector 2-(4-Butoxyphenyl)acetohydroxamic acid (BAHA) was actively considered in the flotation of rhodochrosite. Flotation behaviors and BAHA adsorption concerning rhodochrosite, calcite and dolomite were systematacially investigated through microflotation tests, adsorption experiments, zeta potential measurements, FTIR and XPS analyses. Microflotation results showed that rhodochrosite performed a better floatability than calcite and dolomite at pH 8.0–10.0. Also, the adsorption amounts of BAHA collector on the rhodochrosite surface were obviously greater than those of calcite and dolomite. The results of zeta potential, FTIR and XPS analyses indicated that BAHA adsorbed onto rhodochrosite surfaces through chemisorption, electrostatic attraction and intermolecular hydrogen bonding, chemisorption and electrostatic attraction for calcite, and only chemisorption for dolomite. The interaction mechanisms between BAHA collector and mineral surfaces were responsible for the differences in the BAHA adsorption and floatability between rhodochrosite and two gangues. The flotation separation tests of three minerals confirmed that the rhodochrosite concentrate with Mn grade of 24.64% and recovery of 87.94% could be obtained. BAHA is a high selective collector and can realize the flotation separation of rhodochrosite against dolomite and calcite.

Chitin/calcite composite extracted from shell waste as a low-cost adsorbent for removal of tetracycline and ciprofloxacin: Effects and mechanisms

Erming Ouyang,Mingming Wu,Wanyuan He,Haiyang Liu,Mengyao Gui,Hongwei Yang

Recently, water contamination caused by the misuse of antibiotics has become a growing concern. In this study, an economical chitin/calcite composite (CCA) was extracted from crab shell waste, and the effects and mechanisms of its removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solution were investigated. The functional groups of chitin and the metal phase of calcite gave CCA the ability to remove antibiotics. Experiments on kinetics, isothermal adsorption, thermodynamics, co-removal, and reusability were conducted to systematically explor e the adsorption performances of CCA toward antibiotics. The pseudo-second-order (FSO) and Langmuir models suited the data obtained from experiments best and displayed a good fit for the chemisorption and a certain homogeneity of adsorption sites. At 25 °C, the maximum adsorption capacities (Q max ) toward CIP and TC were 228.86 and 150.76 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorption mechanisms of CCA with TC and CIP are pH dependent since pH can affect the surface charge of CCA and the form in which CIP and TC are existing. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) demonstrated that the keto-O and carboxyl groups of CIP and the carbonyl, hydroxyl, and amido groups of TC could be responsible for the binding with the calcite and the functional groups of chitin through surface complexation, cation bridge and hydrogen bonding.

Selective flotation of magnesite from calcite using a novel chelating collector MES D30: Insights from DFT calculations and molecular dynamics simulations

Haoran Sun,Zining Guo,Yulian Wang,Zijian Wang,Xinglong Sun

MES D30 is a green chelating collector that achieves selective separation of magnesite from calcite. • With only a small amount of sodium silicate, a maximum recovery difference of 76.42% was achieved under optimal conditions. • MES D30 exhibits stable chelating adsorption on magnesite, with a 6.7-fold higher binding energy shift for Mg 2+ than for Ca 2+ . • DFT and MD simulations reveal that stable chelate rings form with Mg 2+ on magnesite, while the hydration layer on calcite hinders effective coordination. Selecting the appropriate collector is key to achieving efficient separation of magnesite and calcite. In this study, MES D30 was used as a green chelating collector, and with a small amount of the inhibitor sodium silicate (SS), efficient flotation separation of the two minerals was achieved. Under optimal conditions of 140 mg/L MES D30, 7 mg/L SS, pH 11.0, and 2000 rpm, the difference in recovery between the two minerals reached 76.42%. Contact angle and zeta potential tests indicate that MES D30 significantly increases the hydrophobicity of the magnesite surface and shifts its potential to the negative, while having a negligible effect on calcite; SEM-EDS analysis shows that 3.4% of the characteristic S element was detected on the magnesite surface, compared to only 0.6% on calcite. FTIR confirmed the interaction of MES D30 with magnesite, while XPS revealed that the binding energy shift of Mg 2+ (1.88 eV) is approximately 6.71 times that of Ca 2+ (0.28 eV), indicating a much stronger chemical interaction and the formation of a stable adsorption on magnesite. DFT and MD simulations further revealed that the active sites of MES D30 form a stable chelate structure with Mg 2+ on the magnesite surface, resulting in a higher binding energy; in contrast, the hydration film on the calcite surface hinders the agent's action, leading to a lower binding energy.

Effect of Calcium Ion on the Flotation of Fluorite and Calcite Using Sodium Oleate as Collector and Tannic Acid as Depressant

Yupeng Qian,Xuan Qiu,Tiewei Shen,Yangyang Huai,Bin Chen,Zhen Wang

In the flotation of semi-soluble minerals such as calcite and fluorite, Ca2+is one of the common dissolved components influencing the collector adsorption behaviors on the mineral surfaces. However, there is very limited research focusing on how the dissolved Ca2+affects the separation of fluorite and calcite. In the study, with sodium oleate (NaOL) as a collector and tannic acid (TA) as a depressant, a flotation test, zeta potential measurement, and adsorption experiment in the presence of Ca2+were conducted. Flotation tests indicated that in the presence of Ca2+, fluorite and calcite were both significantly depressed by TA, leading to difficulty in the separation of the two minerals. It was also found that the depression effect on fluorite flotation was minimized with a high concentration of NaOL. Zeta potential measurement and the adsorption experiment results are consistent with the flotation results, revealing that it is only in the low concentration of NaOL that the flotation of fluorite was depressed by TA in the presence of Ca2+. Specifically, in the low concentration of NaOL, TA adsorbed on the fluorite surface and depressed the flotation of fluorite due to the preferential interaction between NaOL and Ca2+in the solution leading to a shortage in the effective NaOL in the solution. In the high concentration of NaOL, the adsorbed TA on the fluorite surface was displaced by the excessive NaOL in the solution; hence, the flotation of fluorite was recovered. In contrast, TA always hinders the interaction of NaOL with calcite regardless of the presence and absence of Ca2+and NaOL, hence, depressing the flotation of calcite. The study presented that a high concentration of NaOL may mitigate the negative effect of Ca2+on the fluorite surface and improve the separation of fluorite from calcite. Keywords:calcium ion;fluorite;adsorption mechanism;tannic acid

Understanding the Adsorption Mechanism of BTPA, DEPA, and DPPA in the Separation of Malachite from Calcite and Quartz: DFT and Experimental Studies

Zehui Gao,Chongjun Liu,Tong Lu,Zhiqiang Zhao,Guiye Wu,Yangge Zhu

The relationship between the structure of bis (2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (BTPA), diethyl phosphinic acid (DEPA), and diphenyl phosphinic acid (DPPA) on the flotation performance of malachite was investigated. Through a series of flotation experiments, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and surface analysis methods, we aimed to deeply understand the microscopic mechanism of the interactions between these collectors and the malachite surface. The experimental results showed that BTPA exhibited excellent selectivity and flotation performance for malachite in the pH range of 5.0–11.0, significantly better than DEPA and DPPA. Surface analysis evidence from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) further confirmed the chemical adsorption characteristics of BTPA on the malachite surface. DFT calculations revealed that the adsorption capacity of BTPA on the malachite surface exceeds that of DEPA and DPPA. Electron transfer analysis, especially through frontier molecular orbital theory, differential charge density, PDOS, and COHP analysis, indicated that the charge transfer process from the s orbitals of oxygen atoms in the collectors to the d orbitals of copper atoms on the mineral surface is the decisive factor for the adsorption strength.

Efficient degradation of sulfamethazine sodium via hydrogen peroxide activation in the presence of calcite: Synergistic effect of Co(II) and Cu(II)

Ping Zhang,Xinru Yang,Can Wang,Fuwei Sun,Haibo Liu,Tianhu Chen,Dong Chen,Ziyang Chu,Jin Zhang,Jian Huang,Fazhi Xie

The bimetallic synergistic effect plays a significant role in enhancing the efficiency of antibiotics degradation via hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) activation. In this study, the degradation of sulfamethazine sodium (SMT) by H 2 O 2 was comprehensively explored in a system where Cu(II) and Co(II) ions synergistically activate H 2 O 2 in the presence of calcite. The Cu(II)/Co(II)/calcite/H 2 O 2 system using only 1.0 mg/L of Cu(II), exhibits excellent oxidation capacity, enabling complete removal of SMT within 1 h (0.085 min −1 ). This rate is 4.5 and 23.5 times higher than those observed in the Cu(II)/calcite/H 2 O 2 (0.019 min −1 ) and Co(II)/calcite/H 2 O 2 systems (0.0036 min −1 ), respectively. According to scavenger experiments, ESR captures test, and chemical probe experiments, it is determined that Cu(III) primarily contributes to SMT degradation, rather than hydroxyl radicals (·OH), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), and high valent cobalt-oxo species [e.g. Co(IV)]. The introduction of Co(II) promotes the formation of Cu(III) by accelerating the oxidation of Cu(II). Furthermore, the degradation pathways for SMT are elucidated through UPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis, and variations in toxicity are rigorously assessed using the ECOSAR program. In summary, this study reveals the highly effective synergistic activation of H 2 O 2 by Cu(II) and Co(II) in the presence of calcite, offering new insights into the comprehensive utilization of calcite in environmental catalysis, particularly for addressing the pollution caused by coexisting heavy metals and antibiotics.

Mechanisms of Ligand Structures of Fe-Salicylic Acid and Fe-Gallic Acid Colloidal Complexes Regulating the Flotation Behavior of Scheelite with Calcite

Zheyu Huang,Jingzhong Kuang,Tingsheng Qiu,Mingming Yu

The similarity in surface properties between scheelite and calcite makes their flotation separation particularly challenging, thereby severely limiting the efficient utilization of tungsten resources. In this paper, Fe-SYA and Fe-GA colloidal complexes were synthesized via a metal-organic coordination strategy using Fe³⁺ with salicylic acid (SYA) and gallic acid (GA), respectively, and their structure-dependent flotation regulation mechanisms were systematically investigated. The structural stability, interfacial adsorption behavior, and their relationship with flotation selectivity were elucidated through contact angle measurements, zeta potential analysis, XPS, TEM and DFT calculations. The results showed that Fe-SYA and Fe-GA preferentially adsorbed on the calcite surface at pH=4 and a ratio of 1:1/2, significantly reducing calcite hydrophobicity and collector adsorption, while exerting only a minor effect on scheelite, thereby enabling selective separation. Owing to its abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups, Fe-GA formed a stable reticulated polydentate coordination structure with enhanced electronegativity and spatial stability, facilitating the formation of a dense inhibition film on calcite and yielding superior flotation performance, with a WO₃ concentrate grade of 71.03% and a recovery of 86.54%. In contrast, Fe-SYA exhibited lower structural stability and was prone to hydrolysis into Fe(OH)₃ colloids under alkaline conditions, resulting in non-selective inhibition. This work elucidates the structure–selectivity relationship of metal-organic colloidal complexes and provides a green and efficient strategy for the flotation separation of calcium-bearing minerals.

Inhibition mechanism of highly selective flotation separation of scheelite and calcite by novel complexes: based on the undirected coordination of rare earth ions

Jun Wang,Jingzhong Kuang,Wenxin Hua,Lei Wang,Chengyang Zhang,Zheyu Huang,Mingming Yu,Lingguo Meng

Developed a new Er-CMC reagent for flotation separation of scheelite and calcite. • The WO 3 grade of the optimal system is 73.14%, with a recovery rate of 96%. • The influence of complex stability on flotation was investigated using automatic potentiometric titration and quantum chemical calculations. • The non directional coordination of Er ions adapts to the undulating surface of calcite (104) and can tightly adhere to form a stable irregular pentahedral structure. Scheelite and calcite share analogous surface characteristics, hindering their flotation separation, while traditional depressants suffer from excessive dosage and poor selectivity. This work fabricates a stable, high-selectivity composite depressant consisting of lanthanide Er 3+ and macromolecular CMC for effective scheelite-calcite separation. At a depressant dosage of 1 mg/L and an Er 3+ to CMC ratio of 1:2, this composite depressant elevated the scheelite concentrate grade to 73.12%. Potentiometric titration, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and FTIR spectroscopy were adopted to reveal the underlying mechanism. Er 3+ can bind to the long carbon chains of CMC at arbitrary angles to form stable complexes. Subsequently, irregular pentahedral coordination structures are constructed via interactions between Er 3+ and oxygen atoms in CO 3 2− . These complexes tightly attach to the calcite surface and generate a hydrophilic film, thereby blocking the adsorption of collectors. This coordination flotation strategy highlights lanthanides’ unique mineral processing merits and guides novel flotation reagent development.
