High temperature-resistant flexible inorganic coating for aluminium silicate fiber cloth with low solar absorption ratio and high emissivity

Yunjia Xue,Zhe Huang,Xukun Yang,Jinfeng Zhao,Hengrui Zhang,Guanglu Zhang,Anran Guo,Liwen Yan,Feng Hou,Jiachen Liu

To prepare a coating with a high emissivity and low solar absorption ratio on the surface of aluminum silicate fiber cloth, the sol-gel method was used with silica sol as a binder. In this study, the effects of two white fillers, titanium oxide and zirconia, on the substrate and radiation properties of coatings were compared after heat treatment at 800–1200 °C. The ZrO 2 -based coating had good stability after heat treatment at 800–1200 °C, and maintained its white color, exhibiting solar absorption ratio of approximately 0.14 and emissivity of 0.84. ZrO 2 -based coatings prevented harmful cracking, as observed for the TiO 2 -based coatings after heat treatment, because of the ZrO 2 phase transformation. The ZrO 2 -based coating did not have strong bonding with the substrate, and the substrate strength was improved by maintaining a weak bonding interface. Compared with the TiO 2 -based coatings, which exhibit reduced substrate strength above 1000 °C, the ZrO 2 -based coating was more suitable for the surface of flexible fiber cloths as a temperature-resistant coating with good development prospects.

Long-Term Infrared Stealth by Sandwich-Like Phase-Change Composites at Elevated Temperatures via Synergistic Emissivity and Thermal Regulation

Jianwei Jing,Huan Liu,Xiaodong Wang

The rapid development of infrared surveillance technologies has attracted great attention for scientists to design advanced functional materials with prominent infrared stealth and thermal camouflage effectiveness. In the current study, a sandwich-like functional composite based on a crosslinked polyimide aerogel, a meso-erythritol (mE)-based phase-change composite, and an MXene film has been developed to achieve long-term thermal camouflage at elevated temperatures. In this composite system, the lower aerogel layer can act as a barrier to insulate heat transfer through its layer-stacking structure under ultralow directional thermal conduction. The introduction of the middle phase-change composite layer ensures that the composite system obtains a dynamical temperature-regulation capability through sensible and latent heat absorption of mE as a phase change material, while the upper MXene layer provides a very low emissivity surface for the system. As a result, the developed composite achieves a significant reduction in the thermal radiation temperature of a high-temperature target. Moreover, the MXene film exhibits good electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness, making the sandwich-like composite obtain a thermal camouflage capability in various complicated scenarios. This work provides a promising approach for the design of advanced functional materials to realize long-term infrared stealth and thermal camouflage of high-temperature targets in security protection and counter-surveillance.

High reflectivity and high emissivity integrated double layer coating on the flexible alumina fiber fabric with enhanced heat-dissipation efficiency

Zhengdong Li,Xueying Zhang,Liwen Yan,Haiyan Du,Anran Guo,Ying Mu,Jiachen Liu

High emissivity coatings on hypersonic vehicle surfaces dissipate heat by emitting thermal radiation. While the difficulty of increasing emissivity limits the performance of coatings to improve heat-dissipation of the thermal insulation felt. Herein, a novel high-reflectivity and high-emissivity integrated double-layer coating was developed to enhance the thermal insulation performance of the alumina fiber fabric. The coating comprised of TiO 2 @SiO 2 (T@S) as reflective agent and ZrO 2 /SiC w (ZSC) as emittance agents, was applied on the surface of alumina fiber fabric (AFF). The reflecting effect of radiation heat from the high reflective agent enhanced the thermal insulation properties of the double-layer coating. In the wavelength range of 0.4–2.5 μm, the average emissivity of the ZSC coating was 0.83 and the average reflectivity of the T@S coating was 0.63. With continuous heating at 1400 °C for 10 min with a butane torch, the temperature on the backside of the T@S–ZSC-coated AFF remained relatively stable at 225 °C, which is notably decreased by 80 °C compared to that of the single-layer ZSC-coated AFF. The tensile strength of AFF with T@S–ZSC coating reached 35 MPa after being heat treated at 1200 °C. Moreover, the bonding strength between the coating and the AFF substrate was measured to be 0.15 MPa. The double-layer coating with high emissivity and reflectivity, along with a flexible AFF substrate, offers a promising solution for addressing the challenging of surface heat-dissipation in hypersonic vehicles.

Optimization of SiC–ZrC high emissivity composite flexible coating for thermal protection with high interfacial bond strength and temperature resistance

Hengrui Zhang,Yunjia Xue,Liwen Yan,Anran Guo,Haiyan Du,Jiachen Liu

Aluminum silicate fiber fabric (ASFF) has been widely used in the outer surface of flexible insulation felt on the leeward side of aerospace vehicle. In order to improve the temperature resistance of ASFF, a kind of SiC–ZrC composite coating was prepared on the surface of fiber fabric via spraying method with SiC as emittance agent and ZrC as additive. The surface morphology and mechanical properties of the coating were studied. Compared with the single-component SiC coating, the composite coating could effectively avoid coating spalling and improve the surface integrity at high temperature. After thermal treatment at 1100 °C for 2 h, the interface bond strength of the composite coating/substrate was 52.41% higher than that of SiC coating/substrate. The tensile strength of fiber fabric with SiC–ZrC composite coating could reach 91.75 MPa, which was 101.76% higher than that of raw ASFF. Therefore, the SiC–ZrC coating could greatly improve the temperature resistance of ASFF, and has an attractive application prospect in the field of thermal protection system.

Preparation and performance characterization of leaf-mimetic polyurethane/Al-ZnO composite coatings with low infrared emissivity and green peak characteristics

Weigang Zhang,Jialun Zhang,Guojuan Xu,Qianfeng Zhang

A high performance infrared and visible light compatible stealth coating was prepared by a simple method. • The leaf-mimetic PU/Al-ZnO composite coatings with yellow-green color and green peak characteristics. • The PU/Al-ZnO composite coating exhibits a prominent green peak at 544 nm, resembling that of green vegetation. • The PU/Al-ZnO composite coating exhibits excellent infrared stealth performance and mechanical properties. With the rapid development of various reconnaissance equipment targeting land-based equipment, traditional green camouflage coatings and low infrared emissivity camouflage coatings have become inadequate to meet practical needs. Developing green-based low infrared emissivity coatings with distinct green peak characteristics is an effective approach to address the aforementioned issues. In this study, using polyurethane resin as the matrix, yellow-blue polyurethane color paste as the colorant, flaky Al powder and zinc oxide (ZnO) as low emissivity functional fillers, a systematic regulation and optimization were carried out using the variable control method for the washing and drying duration of Al powder, the content of low emissivity fillers (Al powder + ZnO), the ratio of ZnO to Al powder, and the total amount of pigment and filler based on the comprehensive performance of the coating. The results show that after washing and drying the Al powder with ethanol for 3.5 h, the prepared coating exhibits a yellow-green appearance that matches green leaves. It has a characteristic reflection peak at 544 nm similar to that of green vegetation, and the coating has the lowest emissivity. Under the optimal washing and drying duration conditions for Al powder, the emissivity of the coating can be adjusted within the range of 0.738 to 0.807 by regulating the amount of low emissivity filler, while ensuring that the coating exhibits distinct yellow-green characteristics. When the amount of low emissivity filler is 16 wt% and the ratio of ZnO to Al powder is 6:4, the infrared emissivity of the coating reaches its lowest at 0.738, while maintaining distinct green peaks and yellow-green appearance characteristics. Finally, when the total amount of pigment and filler is adjusted to 40 wt%, the emissivity of the coating is the lowest, the yellow-green characteristics are prominent, and it has excellent mechanical properties.

Construction of a low-lightness, low-emissivity and color-matched coating system with robust durability for visible-infrared compatible stealth

Jinqiu Jiang,Xinhui Cao,Meng Sun,Xujie Guo,Junhao Shen,Hui Zhang,Liying Zhang,Jianyong Yu

With the rapid development of detection technologies, including visible (VIS) imaging and infrared (IR) sensing, the detectability of targets in complex environments has been significantly enhanced, driving the urgent demands on coating systems capable of simultaneously achieving VIS and IR stealth. Conventional coatings that use metallic fillers for low IR emissivity often exhibit high lightness ( L* ), impairing visual camouflage. Conversely, incorporating pigments to regulate visual features usually increases IR emissivity, making it challenging to balance both VIS and IR stealth performance. To address this challenge, we developed a bilayer low- L* VIS-IR compatible stealth coating system (C S ) that synergistically combined spectral modulation with thermal management. SiO 2 -coated Al composite fillers (SiO 2 @Al) were employed in the upper layer to reduce L* while maintaining low IR emissivity, and Cr 2 O 3 pigments were introduced for precise chromaticity regulation to achieve effective color matching with a standard forest green background. The lower layer consisted of a silica aerogel (SA) based thermal-insulating coating, which effectively blocks heat transfer, thereby reducing thermal radiation. The resulting C S achieved an IR emissivity below 0.4 across the 8–14 μm spectrum, a low L* of 33.0, and a color difference of 2.1 relative to the target. Moreover, the IR emissivity and ΔE of C S remained nearly unchanged after environmental durability tests and demonstrated excellent adhesion (grade 0), providing a practical and engineering-feasible strategy for VIS-IR compatible stealth.

High-Emissivity M2+@TiO2/High-Entropy Coating on Flexible Aluminosilicate Fiber Fabric for Enhanced Bonding Strength and Thermal Insulation Performance

Jiahui Xu,Xueying Zhang,Xiaohui Ma,Jiachen Liu

High-emissivity coatings on flexible fibrous fabrics are promising thermal-insulation materials for thermal protection systems in hypersonic vehicles. However, the interfacial bonding strength between the high-emissivity coating and the flexible fibrous substrate remains a critical challenge. A high-emissivity double-layer TiO2interlayer modified by metal ions (Mg2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+) with high-entropy (M2+@TiO2-HE) coating was developed on an aluminosilicate fiber fabric. The interlayer of the M2+@TiO2-HE coating not only enhances bonding strength through mechanical interlocking but also improves thermal insulation performance by acting as an infrared reflective layer. The bonding strength between the M2+@TiO2-HE coating and the ASFF substrate showed an 183% enhancement compared to that of the single-layer high-emissivity high-entropy coating. Under one-sided heating at 1400 °C, the backside temperature of the coated ASFF stabilizes at 330 °C, which is approximately 50 °C lower than that of the sample with the single-layer high-emissivity high-entropy coating. In the wavelength range of 0.3–2.0 μm, the average reflectivity of the M2+@TiO2coating was 0.70, and in the wavelength range of 1–14 μm, the average emissivity of the M2+@TiO2-HE coating was 0.89. The M2+@TiO2-HE coating with high emissivity and reflectivity enhances both the bonding strength and thermal insulation performance of ASFF, showing its potential for applications in aerospace thermal protection systems.

Decoupling and Dynamic Regulation of Thermal Radiation and Emissivity via an Active/Passive, Environment-Adaptive Metamaterial for Intelligent Infrared Camouflage

Jing Zhao,Huan Liu,Xiaodong Wang

Infrared stealth at elevated temperatures presents a significant challenge, as it necessitates the simultaneous suppression of thermal radiation and adaptive camouflage against diverse environmental backgrounds. However, existing systems often address only one aspect, failing to achieve high-temperature stealth across varying environments. To overcome this, a novel sandwich-structured composite is developed herein, which synergistically combines passive thermal management with active emissivity regulation. This integrated system comprises a directionally porous polyimide aerogel with ultralow thermal conductivity (29.7 mW m −1 K −1 ) as the foundational insulating layer, a polyimide/polyethylene glycol phase-change composite with high latent heat capacity (157.4 J g −1 ) as the intermediate thermal buffer, and an electrochromic device capable of dynamically modulating its infrared emissivity (emissivity contrast Δ ε = 0.69 across 2.5–14 µm bands) via reversible copper electrodeposition as the functional top layer. The composite demonstrates exceptional performance, including a maximum service temperature of up to 300°C and the ability to maintain a radiation temperature as low as 26.2°C on a 200°C hot background. Furthermore, its emissivity can be actively tuned to conform to varying surrounding conditions. This work provides a viable and advanced strategy for the development of intelligent, environment-adaptive thermal management systems for effective infrared camouflage in demanding and variable scenarios.

Influences of morphology and floating rate of CeO2 fillers on controlling infrared emissivity of the epoxy-silicone resin based coatings

Lei Wang,Chuyang Liu,Guoyue Xu,Shanshan Xiang,Mengyu Shi,Yujing Zhang

CeO 2 powders with flaky morphology and high floating rate are fabricated successfully by ball-milling and stearic acid modification. The influences of ball-milling time and surfactant stearic acid content on the morphology, floating rate, infrared emissivity of CeO 2 powders as well as the CeO 2 /epoxy-silicone coatings have been investigated systematically. The results show that the CeO 2 powders transform from irregular grains with larger size to flake grains with smaller size by ball-milling for 4 h. The floating rate of CeO 2 enhances from 0 cm 2 /g to 89.06 cm 2 /g by increasing stearic acid content from 0 wt% to 1 wt% while diminishes to 60.477 cm 2 /g with stearic acid content of 3 wt%. Ultimately, the coating with CeO 2 fillers ball-milled by 4 h and modified by 1 wt% of stearic acid exhibits the lowest emissivity value of 0.831 in the 8–14 μm waveband. The mechanisms for small and flaky fillers as well as high floating fillers to achieve low emissivity coatings are also fully revealed.

High-temperature-resistant ZrO2 coating with SiC-whisker-enhanced interfacial bonding strength and improved emissivity for flexible silica fibre fabric

Ying Mu,Liwen Yan,Peisen Liu,Qichao Gao,Anran Guo,Xiaojing Xu,Haiyan Du,Shun Dong,Jiachen Liu

As a critical structure of thermal protection systems, flexible fibre insulation felts are widely used on the leeward surface of spacecrafts. To enhance the thermal resistance of flexible fibre felts, SiC w -ZrO 2 coatings with different SiC whisker (SiC w ) contents were fabricated on the surface of a high-silica-fibre fabric (HSFF) by employing a sol-gel method combined with a spraying route. The introduction of SiC w having a length of 10–50 μm effectively improved the coating integrity. After calcination at 1000 °C for 1 h, the SiC w -ZrO 2 coating containing 8 wt% SiC w did not damage the tensile strength and flexibility of the fibre fabric, and the interfacial bonding strength between the coating and HSFF reached 0.40 MPa, benefitting from the whisker toughening mechanism. The SiC w -ZrO 2 coating with a high emissivity of 0.96 in the 2–14 μm wavelength range reduced the surface temperature of the flexible insulation felt by approximately 300 °C when a butane torch was applied at above 1300 °C.

Optimizing the emissivity regulation performance of a multilayer adaptive infrared camouflage structure based on transport ability control of an ionic liquid

Gengyuan Liang,Ying Xiao,Jianwei Zhang,Wenshu Zhao,Yonglv He,Jun Tang,Shuxin Bai

The dynamic regulation of infrared signals has received widespread attention. For the typical multilayer adaptive infrared camouflage structure, many efforts have been made to explore a variety of materials; metals, carbon nanomaterials and polymers can all be used in this field. However, little attention has been given to the mechanism of mass transfer within the structure, which could play a decisive role in the infrared camouflage performance. In this paper, the influence of cation and anion enrichment on the band structure and density of states of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is discussed through density functional theory (DFT), and the results show that ion migration plays an important role in the regulation of the emissivity. On the basis of theoretical research, a novel waterborne polyurethane (WPU)/ionic liquid (IL) gel is further prepared to realize control of the ionic transport capability, and a MWCNT film-based sandwich structure is fabricated to achieve adaptive infrared camouflage. The maximum emissivity regulation coefficient reaches 0.85, which is the highest to the best of our knowledge. The optimization scheme proposed in this work can provide a good reference for other similar problems.

High emissivity double-layer coating on the flexible aluminum silicate fiber fabric with enhanced interfacial bonding strength and high temperature resistance

Guanglu Zhang,Yunjia Xue,Peisen Liu,Anran Guo,Haiyan Du,Liwen Yan,Jiachen Liu

A high emissivity double-layer coating with SiC and ZrO 2 as emittance agents was prepared on the surface of flexible aluminum silicate fiber fabric (ASFF) to improve the thermal insulation performance of the fiber fabric. The tensile strength and interfacial bonding strength of raw ASFF, ASFF with single-layer ZrO 2 coating and ASFF with double-layer SiC-ZrO 2 coating were compared and studied. The ASFF with SiC-ZrO 2 coating still exhibits a high tensile strength of 75 MPa after heat treated at 1100 °C. The shear bond strength of the coating/substrate interface and the coating/coating interface is 0.08 MPa and 0.18 MPa, respectively. The spectral emissivity of the SiC-ZrO 2 coating is as high as 0.93, which is about 1.6 times that of the raw ASFF. The heat-proof and thermal insulation integrated composite consisting of flexible ASFF substrate and double-layer SiC-ZrO 2 high emissivity coating demonstrated potential application as large area of thermal protection material.
