Lignin-based Lig-SA-CS enabled hydrogel-mediated compost bioaugmentation. • Lig-SA-CS showed progressive disintegration under dynamic thermal conditions. • Hydrogel encapsulation enhanced lignocellulose transformation and HA formation. • Precursor and 2D-COS revealed stage-dependent humification. A Lig-SA-CS hydrogel previously developed from DES-isolated corn-straw lignin was further evaluated in this study as a bio-based carrier for the co-encapsulation of Bacillus subtilis and Kosakonia cowanii during composting. The hydrogel showed progressive temperature-responsive structural changes, remaining relatively stable at 30–40 ℃ while undergoing swelling, structural weakening, and partial disintegration under elevated-temperature exposure. Composting results indicated that the hydrogel-encapsulated treatment (T2) maintained thermophilic conditions (>50 °C) for approximately 16 days, with the thermophilic phase ending around day 18 and exhibited greater moisture retention. Consequently, T2 reached the selected maturity-related thresholds (C/N < 15 and GI > 80%) by day 28, earlier than the free-bacteria treatment (T1, 35 days) and the control (CK, 42 days). Enhanced cellulase, LiP, MnP, and Lac activities in the T2 group were associated with improved lignocellulose transformation and increased formation of reducing sugars and polyphenols. FTIR-2D-COS analysis indicated a sequential structural evolution in T2, with lignin-derived aromatic structures responding earlier, followed by later responses of polysaccharide-related structures. Microbial community analysis identified 11 key taxa in T2, whose network positions and environmental associations suggested potential involvement in lignocellulose transformation and humification. Overall, the Lig-SA-CS-mediated bioaugmentation strategy enhanced lignocellulose transformation and humic acid formation, providing a promising material-assisted approach for the valorization of agricultural organic wastes and the production of humified compost products. Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are increasingly used in biomass processing, where extraction of bioactive compounds and lignocellulose fractionation often need to be considered together. However, the unclear molecular mechanisms hinder their engineered application. In this work, aromatic DES were synthesized using guaiacol (Gua) or p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) as a third component. ChCl-EG-Gua achieved the highest extraction performance, yielding 105.48 mg RE/g DW flavonoids and 215.91 mg GAE/g DW polyphenols while preserving strong antioxidant activity. ChCl-EG-PTSA removed 97.60% hemicellulose and 77.68% lignin. Multiscale modeling combining density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the aromatic hydrogen bond donor (HBD) engages with target extracts via π π stacking and CH π interactions. This forms a distinct spatial configuration that strengthens van der Waals (vdW) forces, elucidating the underlying interaction mechanism. This work provides molecular guidance for balancing extraction, fractionation, and solvent constraints in integrated biomass utilization.

Filamentous fungi are key producers of cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic enzymes (CH enzymes), which play pivotal roles in lignocellulosic biomass conversion. Although several Talaromyces sp. have demonstrated the ability to produce CH enzymes, the enzymatic potential and regulatory mechanisms of Talaromyces endophyticus remain poorly understood. This study to systematically investigates the lignocellulose-degrading potential of T . endophyticus , providing new insights into its regulatory networks. The novel strain T . endophyticus NEAU-6 exhibited high CH enzymes activities when cultured on corn stover. Notably, enzymatic hydrolysis of alkali-pretreated corn stover using a crude CH enzyme loading of only 10 FPase/g of substrate resulted in a glucose yield of 70.2 %, highlighting its efficiency at a relatively low enzyme dosage. Structural and compositional characterization confirmed efficient degradation of the biomass. Full-length and comparative transcriptomic analyses uncovered 54 upregulated CH enzyme genes and a regulatory network involving 11 canonical transcription factors and developmental regulators, alongside 15 sugar transporters potentially mediating carbon sensing and uptake. These findings elucidate the regulatory network of lignocellulose degradation in T. endophyticus and highlight its potential as a candidate for further development in enzyme production and biomass conversion.

Lignocellulosic nanofibers (LCNF) produced from different agricultural residues vary in crystallinity and non-cellulosic components, which significantly influence their dispersion behavior and interfacial interactions with hydrophobic polyesters. However, systematic comparisons of the grafting of poly lactic acid (PLA) and poly ε-caprolactone (PCL) onto LCNFs derived from multiple biomass under identical conditions remain limited. In this study, eight agricultural residues, e.g. sweet potato residues (SPR), sweet potato vines (SPV), potato residues (P), potato vines (PV), cassava residues (CA), cassava stalks (CAS), rice husks (RH), and maize stalks (MS) were selected. LCNFs were prepared via enzymatic-acid extraction-high pressure homogenization, followed by grafting with PLA and PCL through in-situ ring-opening polymerization ( in-situ ROP). LCNF exhibited nanofibrillar morphologies with diameters of 5–30 nm and lengths of 0.5–2.0 μm, while showing clear source-dependent differences in crystallinity and chemical composition. SPR-LCNF showed the lowest crystallinity and the most negative ζ-potential, and achieved the highest grafting rates of 82.12% (PLA) and 85.68% (PCL). In contrast, RH- and MS-LCNFs displayed the lowest PLA grafting rates (51.30%–55.09%), consistent with their higher lignin and ash contents. Grafting altered thermal decomposition behavior, with T max spanning 312.78–328.44 °C for PLA-grafted samples and 308.48–347.27 °C for PCL-grafted samples. Correlation analysis indicated that grafting efficiency decreased with increasing crystallinity in PLA and PCL systems and was further suppressed in lignin and ash-rich samples. Overall, this study provided guidance for selecting agricultural residues and understanding their effects on the grafting behavior of polyester-grafted LCNF.

The processing of C6 sugars to alkyl levulinate (AL), a versatile biomass-derived building block, can be readily implemented via the straightforward acid-catalyzed reaction in alcohol medium while it remains a challenge to produce AL from C5 sugars in the one-pot procedure over a monolithic catalyst. In this contribution, a budget and multifunctional natural lignocellulose welded Zr–Al bimetallic hybrid (ZrAl@CS-MSA) has been successfully constructed with crude corn stalk as a sustainable support. The becoming Lewis and Brønsted acid sites of ZrAl@CS-MSA catalyst guarantee a high AL yield of 54.3% from xylose via a one-pot process in a renewable n -butanol medium. Experimental findings revealed that the sulfonic group of ZrAl@CS-MSA plays a significant role in the xylose dehydration, furfuryl alcohol etherification and alcoholysis reactions while Zr species is in charge of the transfer hydrogenation of furfural. The Al species enclosed in ZrAl@CS-MSA can regulate its Brønsted and Lewis acidity, accelerating the etherification and alcoholysis reactions as well as alleviating the over hydrogenation of AL. This work opens a green, sustainable and reliable avenue for producing C5 sugar-based AL using natural lignocellulose-related multifunctional catalysts.

Bimetallic Pd-Ru/ hydroxyapatite (HAP) catalysts were developed together with Zirconium phosphate (ZrP) to prepare aviation fuel range hydrocarbons by one-pot HDO from lignocellulose-derived C15 oxygenate. The effects of the catalyst composition , reaction time, initial H 2 pressure and reaction temperature on the HDO were explored. 84.24% C8-C15 alkanes could be obtained by Pd 0.6 -Ru 1.8 /HAP at 150 °C, 4 MPa H 2 . The HDO pathway and the stability of the catalyst were also investigated. To explore the synergy of bimetals and the efficiency of the catalysts, a series of characterizations were conducted. The results verified that the bimetallic catalyst had a better adsorption capacity for the substrate, and the ruthenium external electron density raised due to the introduction of palladium , thereby enhancing the hydrodeoxygenation activity of the catalyst.

The Pickering emulsions containing cinnamon essential oil (CEO) stabilized by lignocellulose nanocrystals-tannic acid (LCNC-TA) complexes were used to improve properties of gelatin film. The influences of various volume proportion mixed oil (sunflower oil/CEO 1:0, 5:1, 2:1 and 1:1) were investigated. Introducing CEO reduced the droplet size approximately from 57 to 30 μm, facilitating droplet distribution in film matrix. With increasing CEO proportion, the surface structure of emulsion films became uniform without micropores or cavities, showing good compatibility with film matrix during film-forming process. Furthermore, increasing CEO proportion improved tensile strength (TS, 3.75–4.61 MPa) and water vapor permeability (WVP, 9.16 × 10 −12 –7.61 × 10 −12 g·cm −1 s −1 Pa −1 ) of emulsion films. Besides, the UV blocking, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of emulsion films improved as CEO proportion increased. Compared with the control gelatin film, the loss of CEO in emulsion films effectively decreased through pre-embedding approach by Pickering emulsion method.

Potato is a major food crop with enormous biomass straw, but lignocellulose recalcitrance causes a costly bioethanol conversion. Here, we selected the cytochimera (Cyt) potato samples showing significantly-modified lignocellulose and much increased soluble sugars and starch by 2–4 folds in mature straws. Under two pretreatments (8 min liquid hot water; 5% CaO) at minimized conditions, the potato Cyt straw showed complete enzymatic saccharification. Further performing yeast fermentation with all hexoses released from soluble sugars, starch and lignocellulose in the Cyt straw, this study achieved a maximum bioethanol yield of 24 % (% dry matter), being higher than those of other bioenergy crops as previously reported. Hence, this study has proposed a novel mechanism model on the reduction of major lignocellulose recalcitrance and regulation of carbon assimilation to achieve cost-effective bioethanol production under optimal pretreatments. This work also provides a sustainable strategy for utilization of potato straws with minimum waste release.

Lignocellulosic-biomass-derived transparent nanopaper is an emerging substrate or functional component for next-generation green optoelectronics. The fabrication of such transparent nanopaper typically needs the delignification of lignocellulose; however, delignification not only is environmentally unfriendly but also impairs the nanopaper properties such as water stability and UV-shielding capacity. In this study, we present a green and facile lignin modification method instead of delignification to fabricate transparent nanopaper from agro-industrial waste with the combined intriguing properties of lignin and cellulose. Because lignin modification selectively removes chromophores without affecting the bulk lignocellulosic structures, the as-prepared lignocellulose nanopaper (LNP) achieved a comparable optical transmittance (∼90%) but superior UV-blocking ability and haze (∼46%) compared with previously reported cellulose (or delignified) nanopaper. The well-preserved lignin structures endowed the transparent LNP with a low surface energy and a small mesoporous size and volume. In addition to a high thermal stability, the transparent LNP exhibited excellent water stability, evidenced by an up to 103° initial water contact angle, a low equilibrium water absorption (<60 wt %), and a high wet mechanical strength (nearly 40% tensile strength and 92% toughness retained in the wet state). Furthermore, we fabricated a GaAs solar cell with the transparent LNP as an advanced light-management layer that leads to significantly improved power conversion efficiency, even under damp conditions. This work sheds light on the conversion of agro-industrial waste to nanopaper with desirable performances for optoelectronics and brings us a step closer toward the scalable production and application of LNP.

Herein, we proposed a metal-ion-induced surface nano-engineering technology for transforming hydrophilic waste newspaper (WNP) into a hydrophobic material suitable for oil-water separation, without using hydrophobic chemicals/materials. WNPs were swelled in a dilute ferric ion solution (i.e., 50 mM FeCl 3 ) followed by oven-drying to induce the coordination between ferric ions and hydroxyls of lignocellulose nanofibrils of the paper. This resulted in the crosslinking of lignocellulose nanofibrils and converted the hydrophilic WNP to the hydrophobic membrane (HM). The HM exhibited remarkable oil sorption capacity for various oils, up to 3.4 times its weight, and demonstrated good recyclability after undergoing 10 cycles of absorption-desorption-drying. Additionally, HM demonstrated the ability to effectively separate both immiscible oil-water mixtures and surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions in continuous gravity-driven oil-water separation processes. With the modification method and advantages in oil-water separation, the as-prepared HM exhibits great potential for application in oil spill treatment and environmental remediation.

The synthesis of functional lignocellulose-based gels from sustainable biomass has received considerable attention in material chemistry. In this study, robust, porous, and lignin-containing lignocellulose hydrogels were prepared based on the sol–gel process. The lignin-containing lignocellulose materials were dissolved (or dispersed) in N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) and cross-linked with a silane coupling agent 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), followed by coagulation and solvent exchange to form gel structures. The formation of Si–O–C cross-links among the lignocellulosic fibrils as a result of the addition of APTES was mainly responsible for the strength improvement. Furthermore, the presence of lignin also contributed to the enhancement of strength properties. The as-prepared lignocellulose gels were further characterized using rheological and compression tests. The dynamic storage modulus of APTES-reinforced lignocellulose gel (LCGA) can reach up to 1391 kPa and the compressive modulus up to 96 kPa, which shows a 3-fold increase in viscoelastic properties and a 2-fold increase in compressive strength compared with unmodified gel. In addition, the obtained LCGA gel exhibits unique properties, such as antiultraviolet weathering and dye removal via adsorption, and their potential applications were explored.

Background Lignocellulose is the most abundant biomass on earth. However, biomass recalcitrance has become a major factor affecting biofuel production. Although cellulose crystallinity significantly influences biomass saccharification, little is known about the impact of three major wall polymers on cellulose crystallization. In this study, we selected six typical pairs of Miscanthus samples that presented different cell wall compositions, and then compared their cellulose crystallinity and biomass digestibility after various chemical pretreatments. Results A Miscanthus sample with a high hemicelluloses level was determined to have a relatively low cellulose crystallinity index (CrI) and enhanced biomass digestibility at similar rates after pretreatments of NaOH and H 2 SO 4 with three concentrations. By contrast, a Miscanthus sample with a high cellulose or lignin level showed increased CrI and low biomass saccharification, particularly after H 2 SO 4 pretreatment. Correlation analysis revealed that the cellulose CrI negatively affected biomass digestion. Increased hemicelluloses level by 25% or decreased cellulose and lignin contents by 31% and 37% were also found to result in increased hexose yields by 1.3-times to 2.2-times released from enzymatic hydrolysis after NaOH or H 2 SO 4 pretreatments. The findings indicated that hemicelluloses were the dominant and positive factor, whereas cellulose and lignin had synergistic and negative effects on biomass digestibility. Conclusions Using six pairs of Miscanthus samples with different cell wall compositions, hemicelluloses were revealed to be the dominant factor that positively determined biomass digestibility after pretreatments with NaOH or H 2 SO 4 by negatively affecting cellulose crystallinity. The results suggested potential approaches to the genetic modifications of bioenergy crops.
