Flexible electromagnetic shielding composite hydrogels can prevent electromagnetic radiation, but achieving low reflectivity and high shielding effectiveness simultaneously remains challenging. Herein, an absorption-dominated electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composite hydrogel featuring a vertically graded distribution of nickel nanowires (Ni NWs) was developed under an external magnetic field. To synergistically enhance the EMI shielding performance, MXene nanosheets were distributed throughout the system, while silver nanowires (Ag NWs) were spin-coated onto the bottom surface (i.e., the side densely populated with Ni NWs). Consequently, the resultant composite hydrogel exhibited a higher EMI shielding effectiveness of 58.2 dB when electromagnetic waves were incident from the bottom than when they were incident from the top (50.9 dB). Moreover, the composite hydrogel possessed excellent pressure sensitivity of 26.6 kPa–1, coupled with an ultrarapid response time of 0.1 s, enabling rapid and accurate detection of human motion, as well as nearly 0% ultraviolet (UV) transmittance at both 365 and 550 nm, thereby realizing effective protection against ultraviolet radiation. This work provides a strategy for developing multifunctional electromagnetic shielding materials, advancing both material design theory and the fabrication of next-generation shielding materials.

We report herein the typical conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) to be successfully modified onto single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) using a supercritical carbon dioxide (SC CO2) antisolvent-induced polymer epitaxy method, and the role of the experimental temperature of SC CO2 on the modification process was systematically investigated. PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs composites with optimal modification prepared at 80 °C and 15 MPa were used as functional fillers, and functional temperature-sensitive composite hydrogels of PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs/poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) were successfully prepared. With the help of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and other characterization means, the chemical composition and microscopic morphology of the composite hydrogel were systematically analyzed. The composite hydrogel exhibits reversible temperature-sensitive responsiveness, transitioning from a transparent swollen state at room temperature to an opaque collapsed state at 32 °C, and demonstrates strong adhesion to various substrates, including glass, plastic, metal, and skin. Meanwhile, the near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion properties of this hydrogel were evaluated, showing a significant and uniform temperature increase upon NIR irradiation. The drug release behavior was assessed in vitro after loading the hydrophilic anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) with the stimulation of NIR light, achieving an accelerated and on-demand release. Our experimental results indicate that the pore size increases with the increase of the addition of PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs, enabling the precise controlled release of 5-FU. This work provides new insights and experimental support for the design of intelligent drug delivery systems.

There is a significant interest in developing environmentally responsive or stimuli-responsive smart materials. The purpose of this study was to investigate multi-function responsive cotton fabrics with surface modification on the nanoscale. Three technologies including electrospinning technology, interpenetrating polymer network technology, and cross-linking technology were applied to prepare the multi-function sericin/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/Poly(ethylene oxide) nanofibers, which were then grafted onto the surfaces of cotton textiles to endow the cotton textiles with outstanding stimuli-responsive functionalities. The multi-function responsive properties were evaluated via SEM, DSC, the pH-responsive swelling behavior test and contact angle measurements. The results demonstrate that with this method, multi-function responsive, including thermo- and pH-responsiveness, cotton fabrics were fast formed, and the stimuli-responsiveness of the materials was well controlled. In addition, the antimicrobial testing reveals efficient activity of cotton fabrics with the sericin/PNIPAM/PEO nanofiber treatments against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria such asStaphylococcus aureusandEscherichia coli. The research shows that the presented strategy demonstrated the great potential of multi-function responsive cotton fabrics fabricated using our method.Keywords:sericin;poly(N-isopropylacrylamide);cotton fabrics;electrospinning

Near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive hydrogels have the advantages of high precision, remote control and excellent biocompatibility, which are widely used in soft biomimetic actuators. The process by which water molecules diffuse can directly affect the deformation of hydrogel. Therefore, it remains a serious challenge to improve the response speed of hydrogel actuator. Herein, an anisotropic photo-responsive conductive hydrogel is designed by a directional freezing method. Due to the anisotropy of the MXene-based PNIPAM/MXene directional (PMD) hydrogel, its mechanical properties and conductivity are enhanced in a specific direction. At the same time, with the presence of the internal directional channels and the assistance of capillary force, the PMD hydrogel can achieve a volume deswelling of 70% in 2 s under light irradiation, further building a hydrogel actuator with a fast response performance. Additionally, the hydrogel actuator can lift an object 40 times its weight by a distance of 6 mm, realizing the advantages of both rapid responsiveness and high driving strength, which makes the hydrogel actuator have important application significance in remote control, microflow valve, and soft robot.

Polysaccharides-based smart fertilizers are essential for promoting plant growth, yet significant challenges exist in achieving stable structures and synchronizing nutrient release and plant growth. This study developed a temperature-responsive gating chitosan-based microcapsule (CTSMC-g-PNIPAM) by grafting N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) onto chitosan microcapsules (CTSMC) via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The interfacial crosslinking of chitosan (CTS) and terephthalendehyde (TPA) formed the CTSMC matrix with a hollow chamber structure and ensured stability. CTSMC-g-PNIPAM exhibited reversible temperature-responsive gating properties and sustained release behavior, and the PNIPAM chains acted like gating switches. Below the low critical solution temperature (LCST) (25 °C), the PNIPAM chains stretched and the gating switch closed, slowing down the release rate. Above the LCST (40 °C), the PNIPAM chains contracted and the gating switch opened, accelerating the release rate. The release behaviors of CTSMC-g-PNIPAM in soil indicated that the gating microcapsule effectively prolonged the release of urea. Moreover, the cumulative release of CTSMC-g-PNIPAM at 40 °C was significantly higher than at 25 °C. The first-order kinetic and Korsmeyer-Peppas model indicate that the urea release involves concentration gradient diffusion and skeleton dissolution. Compared with pure urea, urea@(CTSMC-g-PNIPAM) increased the growth status of maize, suggesting a promising strategy for smart fertilizers.

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-based hydrogels are widely used in the preparation of Janus actuators due to their remarkable temperature-responsive properties. However, preparing PNIPAM-based hydrogel actuators with excellent mechanical properties, mass transfer ability, and programmable deformation, as well as gaining a profound and systematic understanding of their driving mechanisms, remains a challenge to date. To address these challenges, an efficient PNIPAM-hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose/polyacrylamide-Graphene oxide (PNIPAM-HPMC/PAM-GO) Janus hydrogel actuator with strong interfacial stability was constructed based on the self-generation method; PNIPAM-HPMC was used as the active layer, and PAM-GO was used as the passive layer. The introduction of HPMC makes the active layer have excellent tensile strength (7.55–28.3 kPa) and mass transfer ability (39.07–73.03%), thereby improving the deformation ability of the actuator (239–360°). It can still achieve a 360° deformation after being actuated repeatedly 5 times. The deformation dynamics of the Janus hydrogel actuator under thermal response conditions were quantitatively analyzed by real-time tracking of the response behavior, and the important role of mechanical moduli in the deformation process of the Janus hydrogel actuator was revealed for the first time. Therein, the effect of the elastic modulus difference on the deformation of the actuator is 48 times that of the compression modulus difference. Finally, the Janus hydrogel actuator with high interface stability, mechanical robustness, time-programmable, and double-layer integration prepared in this work shows potential application in the fields of bionics, intelligent switches, and display systems.

Underwater superoleophobic surfaces are based on the surface with micro-/nanoscale roughness and hydration layer. But the self-cleaning surfaces are usually mechanically weak and will lose their underwater superoleophobicity when the surfaces are corroded or damaged. In this paper, to overcome these problems, the robust underwater superoleophobic coating (HN/ER-coating) has been fabricated successfully through MPS (methacryloxy propyl trimethoxyl silane)-SiO 2 /PNIPAM ( N -isopropylacryamide) hybrid nanoparticles and epoxy resin (ER) via a simple solution-casting method. The SiO 2 /PNIPAM hybrid nanoparticles can enhance multiscale roughness and excellent abrasion-resistant property, and the epoxy resin can be used as an interlayer between hybrid nanoparticles and substrates to promote the robustness and corrosion resistance of the coating. The obtained coatings have excellent underwater superoleophobicity, and exhibit highly stability in harsh environments (including acid-base, strong ionic strength, mechanical abrasion). Moreover, this coating can provide protective effect on the substrate in corrosive solution, and may also resist bacterial attachment and subsequent biofilm formation because of the presence of high density PNIPAM polymers. Herein, the developed underwater superoleophobic coating can be applied as an effective platform for the applications in underwater instruments, underwater oil transport, marine oil platform and ships.

A series of thermo-responsive rod–coil diblock copolymers with well-defined molecular weights have been synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The rod–coil diblock thermo-responsive copolymer studied herein is poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly[bis(N-hydroxyisopropyl pyrrolidone) 2-vinylterephthalate] (PNIPAm-b-PHIPPVTA), in which PHIPPVTA is a thermo-responsive rod-like polymer and exhibits an MW-dependent liquid crystalline (LC) phase behavior and MW-dependent thermo-responsive behavior. The bulk phase behaviors of the copolymers have been investigated by a combination of techniques including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light microscopy (PLM), 1D and 2D wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The experiment results demonstrated that the phase structure of PNIPAm-b-PHIPPVTA is a hexatic columnar nematic phase when N43bHx and N151bHx with x ≥ 95 and 146, respectively. The thermo-responsive behaviors were investigated with turbidity measurements using UV-visible spectroscopy. The results showed that the cloud point of the diblock copolymers PNIPAm-b-PHIPPVTA can be adjusted by varying the length of the PHIPPVTA block. Only one phase transition temperature has been observed in the thermo-responsive rod–coil diblock copolymer PNIPAm-b-PHIPPVTA. Of special interest is the cloud point of block copolymers with longer flexible chain segment more strongly depending on the length of the semirigid segment compared to copolymers with shorter flexible chain segment.

As thermo-sensitive hydrogels could absorb water quickly and squeeze the water out by their insoluble cross-linked networks under thermal stimulus, a novel osmotic membrane distillation (OMD) process was proposed for the first time. In the OMD process of this study, water vapor diffused across the membrane under the swelling pressure of thermo-sensitive hydrogels. Poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) hydrogels with 0.02%, 0.1% and 0.5% N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) were synthesized and incorporated into the OMD system. The hydrogel properties were characterized by UV–vis spectrophotometer, FTIR and SEM . The effects of MBA content, membrane characteristics, operating temperature on OMD flux were investigated. The initial fluxes for the 0.02%, 0.1% and 0.5% MBA hydrogel-OMD systems were 1.68, 1.09 and 0.76 kg/m 2 ·h, respectively. And the hydrogels transformed to dehydrated state after 150 min of water absorption. The fastest water absorption rates for PNIPAM hydrogels with 0.02%, 0.1% and 0.5% MBA were obtained at the initial swelling ratios of 16, 14 and 12 folds, respectively. Besides, the optimal feed temperatures for the maximum flux were 40 °C, 50 °C and 50 °C for hydrogels with 0.02%, 0.1% and 0.5% MBA, respectively. The membranes with higher porosity and lower thickness demonstrated higher fluxes. According to our results, the swelling pressure of hydrogel acted as a driving force of the hybrid hydrogel-OMD system, and it was greatly affected by the hydrogel structure. Typically, a hydrogel with the balanced water absorbing and dewatering behaviors and a membrane with good mass transfer performance were two essential prerequisites for this process.

Development of high-performance fluorescent materials is crucial for fluorescence imaging technology. Herein, well-defined fluorescent star poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (Flu-PNIPAM) was prepared via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in a continuous-flow microreactor. A tetrafunctional RAFT agent and the functional monomer fluorescein undecylenoyl (Flu-UE) were synthesized, and then pumped into a microreactor with NIPAM monomer together for RAFT polymerization. The microreactor process parameters for the RAFT polymerization were optimized to obtain well-defined Flu-PNIPAM. The NIPAM and Flu-UE units endow Flu-PNIPAM with temperature and pH responsiveness, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering analyses revealed that Flu-PNIPAM self-assembled into nanoparticles with uniform size in an aqueous solution at 37 °C. Moreover, Flu-PNIPAM exhibited good fluorescence and biocompatibility, rendering it highly promising for cell imaging.

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels have gained significant attention as one of the most attractive materials for soft robots. Herein, a facile, printable thermo-responsive hydrogel (NL hydrogel) with rapid volume change capability and excellent mechanical properties was developed through the self-assembly of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and hydrophobic lignin. The lignin and PNIPAM self-assembled into a hierarchical phase-separated structure consisting of lignin-rich dense regions with a bicontinuous morphology and PNIPAM-rich, chain-sparse regions. This unique architecture results in multiscale water channels, enabling an ultrafast dehydration response (expelling 90% of its water within 10 s) and an ultrahigh volume shrinkage of up to 96.4% above its lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The phase separation structure also endows the NL hydrogels with outstanding mechanical properties, achieving tensile stress and strain values exceeding 1 MPa and 500% below the LCST, and approximately 5 MPa and 1500% above the LCST. The responsive speed and mechanical properties of the NL hydrogels surpass those of most reported thermo-responsive hydrogels. The NL hydrogels can be readily printed via direct ink writing into various geometries. The printed NL hydrogels demonstrate thermo-triggered shape morphing, functioning as temperature-controlled actuators with adjustable curvature and as manipulators for capture, wrapping, encapsulation, and switching. Furthermore, the photothermal effect of lignin enables light-controlled actuation of the NL hydrogel.

A SiO2microsphere imprinted by phosphate ions was prepared with the use of phosphate ion as the template molecule and tetraethoxysilane as the precursor. Thereafter, the imprinted SiO2microspheres were modified with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TMSPMA@SiO2), followed by introducing the double bond. In the presence of TMSPMA@SiO2, usingN-isopropylacrylamide as monomer, and potassium persulfate as initiator, polymer/inorganic hybrid particles (PNIPAM/SiO2) were prepared. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption test, and transmission electron microscope were employed for the characterization of molecular imprinted SiO2microspheres and PNIPAM/SiO2hybrid particles. The effects of phosphate concentration, pH value, and adsorption temperature on the phosphate binding properties of PNIPAM/SiO2hybrid particles were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometer. The experimental results shed light on the fact that the PNIPAM structure is beneficial for the improvement of the adsorption ability of phosphate-imprinted SiO2microspheres. With the increase in the initial phosphate concentration, the adsorption capacity of hybrid particles to phosphate ions increased to 274 mg/g at pH = 7 and 15 °C. The acid condition and the temperature below the low critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM are favorable to the adsorption of phosphate ions by PNIPAM/SiO2hybrid particles, and the maximum adsorption capacity can reach 287 mg/g (at pH = 5 and 15 °C). The phosphate imprinted polymer/inorganic hybrid material is expected to be put to use in the fields of phosphate ions adsorption, separation, and recovery.Keywords:N-isopropylacrylamide;molecular imprinting;polymer/inorganic;phosphate;binding
