To address the limitation of traditional minoxidil sulfate (MXS) nano-drug delivery systems—namely, short dosing cycles, frequent replacement requirements, and inability to fulfill cosmetic coverage needs simultaneously—this study aims to develop a composite fiber with dual functions: sustained release and cosmetic coverage. Employing a green and simple wet spinning technique, MXS-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles were functionally composite with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer matrix, successfully yielding PVA/ZIF-8 composite fibers. The resulting composite fiber exhibits excellent mechanical properties, with a tensile strength reaching 2.5 cN/dtex and good aging resistance. The fiber inherits the high drug-loading capacity of ZIF-8 nanoparticles, achieving sustained release for up to 220 h. Additionally, the composite fiber possesses outstanding processability, enabling its further weaving into wigs. This study successfully developed a novel PVA/ZIF-8 composite fiber integrating sustained drug release with physical hair coverage. It expands new application directions for functional polymer composites in the biomedical field.

Soilless cultivation relies on hydrogel matrices for water and nutrient management, but conventional hydrogels lose performance at low temperature and show unstable sustained release. Here this study develops an antifreeze sustained-release hydrogel (P-GTCH) that integrates l-proline (L-P) with a humic-acid-modified cellulose nanocrystal nanocomposite (CNCs-HA) for nanoenabled controlled release. L-P suppresses ice nucleation via hydrogen bonding, while CNCs-HA boosts HA loading and enables controlled transport within the cross-linked network. HA shows slow, continuous release governed by Fickian diffusion, achieving 96.7% cumulative release over 12 days at 0 °C and mitigating poor fertilizer release in cold environments. P-GTCH provides mechanical support for plant roots, and the synergistic effects of L-P and HA maintain lettuce germination above 86% at 0 °C while promoting root growth. This biobased, biodegradable platform is scalable for low-temperature soilless cultivation.

Environmental cleaning is an important aspect of bacteria control. Ethyl cellulose microcapsules containing potassium monopersulfate (PMCM) were prepared by emulsified solvent diffusion method. The chemical structure and microstructure of the obtained PMCM was characterized by methods
of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ACT energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The SEM micrographs of the PMCM containing 21.6% of C, 46.8% of O, 10.7% of S and 19.4% of K was relatively smooth. Thermal stability, sustained
release performance, and antimicrobial activity of PMCM were investigated. The results showed that the drug loading and encapsulation efficiency of PMCM were 30.3% and 42.6% respectively. Potassium monopersulfate was fully released after 8 h, following a Fickian diffusion mechanism. Results
showed that the microcapsules prepared with a high concentration of potassium monopersulfate solution showed a good antimicrobial effect. The microcapsule wall of the resulting PMCM increased with increasing ethyl cellulose content and had high thermal stability from the data of 69% residue
rate. The excellent thermal stability and high sustained release performance of PMCM showed high application value.

The development of clay mineral-based soil amendments has drawn significant concerns in modern agriculture . However, little attention was paid to multifunctional amendments enabling both soil remediation and nutrients sustained release. In this work, a novel montmorillonite (Mt)-based amendment (denoted as KMt-P) was developed by modifying Mt with alkali followed by decoration with phosphate, and was further applied to remediate Cd/REEs contaminated soil. The XRD pattern of KMt-P demonstrated the presence of various silicophosphate and aluminophosphate phases. 27 Al and 29 Si MAS NMR results indicated the destruction of crystal structure of Mt. FTIR and XPS analyses confirmed the formation of Si-O-P, P-O-P, and Al-O-P bonds in KMt-P, which, as we envisioned, should be conductive to the immobilization of Cd and sustained release of nutrients. The addition of KMt-P to soil (1 wt%) could effectively reduce the bioavailable Cd in soil by 91.3% within 30 days. Sustained release of multiple nutrients was also achieved: the concentration of soluble K, Si, and P increases by 15, 3, and 135 times, respectively, in comparison with the control treatment. The increased K and P contents arose from the added modifiers, and that of Si could be ascribed to the destruction of Mt crystal structure under alkali attack. Application of only 1% KMt-P could reduce the concentrations of 17 REEs in the soil by 92.01%–98.89%. In general, KMt-P has proven a promising multifunctional amendment enabling both Cd/REEs immobilization and sustained release of nutrients.

The postharvest quality of Agaricus bisporus declines rapidly during refrigerated storage. A controlled-release system (Eugenol@MCM-41) was prepared by loading eugenol into MCM-41, with a loading capacity of 51%. Physicochemical characterization and all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were combined to clarify the sustained-release mechanism. MD simulations provided supportive evidence for favorable eugenol–silica interfacial interactions and restricted surface-associated mobility in the mesoporous model. In vitro release exhibited clear medium dependence and followed the Weibull model, consistent with diffusion-dominated release under confinement. In storage trials at 4 ± 1 °C, Eugenol@MCM-41 extended acceptable mushroom quality to 15 days. The treatment reduced weight loss, maintained firmness, delayed browning, and lowered malondialdehyde accumulation versus the control and pristine MCM-41. These results connect nanoscale confinement with preservation performance and support Eugenol@MCM-41 as an effective eugenol delivery system for preserving highly perishable foods.

Humic acid, as a natural macromolecular aggregate rich in functional groups, offers abundant modification sites and tunable chemical functionality, making it a promising building block for three-dimensional network construction. In this study, glutaraldehyde (GA) was employed as a crosslinking agent to incorporate sodium humate (NaHA, sodium salt of humic acid from alkaline treatment) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix, yielding composite membranes with enhanced structural stability and performance. The results demonstrate that NaHA effectively modulates the crosslinked network, and the physical and mechanical characteristics can be readily tailored by varying the PVA/NaHA/GA ratio. Compared with pristine PVA/GA hydrogel, the inclusion of NaHA significantly influences the mechanical response, with optimal comprehensive performance achieved at a NaHA content of 7.5 wt%, corresponding to a tensile strength of 60.4 MPa and an elongation at break of 74.2%. Furthermore, the cumulative release of NaHA after two days reached 64.4%, confirming that NaHA supramolecular aggregates were stably entrapped within the PVA/GA crosslinked matrix. The release kinetics were well described by the Korsmeyer–Peppas model. Overall, the covalent crosslinking of PVA with GA, together with hydrogen-bonding associations and physical entrapment mediated by NaHA, constructed a composite membrane network. This network exhibited tunable dry-state mechanical properties and sustained NaHA release, supporting its further evaluation as a prospective candidate for agricultural mulching films.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most prevalent malignancy of the head and neck. Current treatment strategies, including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, are limited by moderate efficacy and severe side effects, highlighting the need for novel therapeutic approaches. Wogonin (Wo), a natural flavonoid, has shown antiproliferative, pro-apoptotic, and antimetastatic activities in various cancer models; however, its effect on OSCC has not been investigated. In this study, Wo-loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (PW NPs) were prepared to enhance water solubility and achieve sustained drug release. In vitro assays, including CCK-8, flow cytometry, live/dead staining, and wound healing assays, revealed that PW NPs significantly inhibited OSCC cell proliferation, induced apoptosis, and reduced cell migration. Network pharmacology analysis and qRT-PCR further suggested that Wo exerts its therapeutic effects through the EGFR signaling pathway. Hemolysis testing and histological examination of major organs confirmed the favorable biocompatibility of the nanoparticles. This study provides the first systematic evidence of the therapeutic potential of Wo in OSCC and lays a foundation for its further preclinical development.

Precise modulation of drug release profiles from fibrous carriers remains a significant challengein sustained-release formulations. Herein, we present a novel and tunable drug delivery system based on electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) hybrid fibers. Herein, CA/PLA composite fibers were designed and fabricated via electrospinning, and their potential as a drug delivery platform was evaluated. By varying the electrospinning solution concentration from 6% to 14%, smooth and uniform fibers with controlled mean diameters (0.59–1.92 μm) were successfully prepared. Meanwhile, the swelling properties and surface wettability of the fibers were effectively modulated by adjusting the CA/PLA ratio (30–70% PLA). Ibuprofen, used as a model drug, was uniformly encapsulated within the fiber matrices with drug encapsulation efficiency (> 93%). In vitro release studies demonstrated that the ibuprofen release rate decreased with increasing fiber diameter and PLA content, and exhibited pH-dependent behavior. The drug release profiles exhibited excellent fit to the Ritger-Peppas model, indicating a Fickian diffusion mechanism. Furthermore, strong correlations were established between drug release half-lives and key fiber parameters (diameter and PLA content). This work presents a simple yet effective strategy for tailoring drug release kinetics, highlighting the significant potential of CA/PLA composite fibers for advanced fibrous sustained-release drug delivery systems.

Effective management of postoperative pain and wound healing presents significant challenges in clinical settings, driving the need for innovative therapeutic approaches. The analgesic and wound healing effects of hydrogen (H 2 ) have gradually been recognized; however, the lack of efficient hydrogen delivery systems remains a major limitation. This study introduces a novel transdermal drug delivery system, which utilizes sustained-release photothermal microneedles (MNs) to ameliorate incisional pain and accelerate wound healing. Polydopamine (PDA)-modified ZIF-8@ammonia borane (AB) nanoparticles with photothermal conversion properties are designed, along with temperature-responsive QX-314-loaded polycaprolactone (PCL) microspheres for controlled release, which are delivered in vivo by dissolvable MNs. In vitro results showed that PDA@ZIF-8@AB nanoparticles can release H 2 continuously for up to 5 days in an acidic microenvironment, while the photothermal properties of PDA facilitated controlled release of QX-314 through 6 cycles of near-infrared (NIR) exposure. In vivo experiments demonstrated that the MN system provided sustained analgesia for up to 5 days and promoted wound healing in the acidic microenvironment of postoperative incisions. Upon NIR exposure, the photothermal conversion of PDA activated membrane ion channels and induced thermally triggered deformation of PCL@QX-314 microspheres, allowing for on-demand release of QX-314 and targeted neuronal uptake, thus offering personalized analgesia. In vitro cell experiments and in vivo studies confirmed the biocompatibility of the system. This innovative approach not only highlights the dual role of H 2 in pain relief and wound healing but also provides a new personalized treatment strategy for postoperative pain management with promising clinical applications.

Acid wastewater (AWW) from the non-ferrous metal smelting industry is characterized by a high level of acidity and a high concentration of As. Sulfiding agents are commonly used for arsenic removal from acid wastewater because of their high efficiency. To address the issues associated with traditional sulfiding agents, such as the release of harmful hydrogen sulfide gas and the introduction of large amounts of sodium ions, this paper proposes a new process of ultrasound-enhanced ZnS for arsenic removal from acid wastewater by sustained release in situ. The low solubility of ZnS provides the advantages of matching the reaction rate to arsenic removal efficiency, inhibiting the escape of H 2 S gas, and preventing the introduction of other cations. Ultrasound can open the ZnS surface encapsulation and accelerate the reaction rate. Experimental research has shown that the arsenic removal rate reached 99.96% and the arsenic concentration was only 0.42 mg/L at an acidity of 120 g/L, S/As molar ratio of 3:1, reaction temperature of 60°C, and ultrasonic power of 100 W for 120 min. The development of this process is of great significance as an application prospect for the arsenic removal from acid wastewater in zinc smelting.

There have been various interventions for photoaging skin, such as retinoic acid treatment and laser therapy. However, more precise, secure, and effective technologies and materials were still need to be explored. Cathepsin D (CTSD) repairs the epidermal barrier in chronic photodamaged skin through increasing TGase-1 expression and activity. Cathepsin K (CTSK) affects the metabolism of skin elastic fibers. Therefore, gelatin/alginate composite hydrogel microspheres loaded with CTSD or CTSK were fabricated. The microspheres with an average size of 79.8 ± 30.4 μm were stable in PBS (pH 7.4) for 5 days and then disintegrated in vitro . 0.1 mg/mL of microspheres continuously released 12-13 ng/mL CTSD or CTSK for the first three consecutive days. In vivo , the microspheres were almost completed degraded on day 7 after the subcutaneous injection. The biosafety and efficacy of CTSD- and CTSK- microspheres were confirmed in vitro and in vivo . They reduced ROS and inhibited the degradation of skin collagen and elastic fibers by upregulating Nrf2 and downregulating MMP-1 and MMP-3, which reversed photodamage of skin induced by UV. In conclusion, the gelatin/alginate composite microspheres loaded with CTSD or CTSK showed a great potential for chronic photodamaged skin.

In this study, a sustained-release paliperidone (PAL) patch was developed using a combination of ion-pair strategy and percutaneous permeation enhancers (PPEs). The ion-pair strategy was used to improve drug-adhesive miscibility and control drug release. PPEs were used to break SC barrier function to facilitate drug skin permeation. The in vitro skin permeation experiments using single-factor experiments and Box-Behnken design gave the optimized formulation, a 55 μm adhesive thickness patch with 7 % ( w/w ) PAL-LA (Lauric acid), 9.7 % ( w/w ) Plurol® Oleique CC 497 (POCC). Moreover, the pharmacokinetic study confirmed its potential in sustained-release transdermal patch with longer MRT 0-t (18.35 ± 3.11 h) and higher BA (63.14 %) than the gavage group ( C max = 6.64 ± 2.61 μg/mL, MRT 0-t = 2.88 ± 1.06 h, BA = 45.70 %) without significant increasing C max . The mechanism study revealed that forming ion-pairs effectively modulated drug’s physicochemical properties and doubly ionic H-bond strength to improve drug miscibility in patches. To summarize, a sustained-release patch of PAL was successfully developed, which provided a strategy for sustained-release patches with good drug-polymer miscibility, drug controlled-release, and feasible drug utilization features.
