This study designs to investigate a high-performance n-butanol gas sensor with a porous morphology. Porous ZnO flakes modified with Ag particles are prepared in two steps using hydrothermal and precipitation methods. Morphological analysis of the samples shows that the ZnO flakes were covered with mesopores with high porosity, and their edge lengths ranged from 3 μm to 6 μm, with a minimum thickness of 11.3 nm. Through rigorous gas sensing testing, we find that the optimal mass percentage Ag-ZnO sensor provided significantly better sensing behavior, with a 100.8 response for 100 ppm n-butanol, compared to 14.5 for the pure ZnO sensor, a 5.95-fold improvement. In addition, the sensor's optimal operating temperature is reduced from 290 °C to 190 °C, increasing its adaptability and versatility in practical applications. In subsequent tests, it is found that this Ag-ZnO sensor not only shows excellent selectivity to n-butanol but also favorable stability, with no significant degradation during 30 days of continuous testing. The experimental analysis shows that the formation of porous flake structure and the modification of Ag particles are effective approaches to improve the ZnO gas sensor.

Graphical In the present study, the blue fluorescent L-Cys@Ti 3 C 2 MQDs are synthesized using hydrothermal methods, and the preparation process is simple, rapid, and mild. The fluorescence of L-Cys@Ti 3 C 2 MQDs can be effectively quenched by Ag + through a static quenching mechanism, demonstrating high sensitivity and excellent selectivity for Ag + detection. MXene quantum dots (MQDs), an emerging zero-dimensional nanomaterial, have garnered significant attention from researchers due to their distinctive physical and chemical properties. In this study, cysteine-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MQDs were synthesized using a facile hydrothermal methods, resulting in the functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MQDs exhibiting intense blue fluorescence attributed to size-dependent effects and surface defects. Furthermore, the cysteine-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MQDs exhibit excitation wavelength-dependent emission behavior and serve as a highly sensitive fluorescent probe for Ag + detection with an impressive low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.015 μM. Moreover, they demonstrate exceptional sensitivity and selectivity in determining Ag + . This study presents a novel approach for the detection of Ag + and highlights the immense potential of cysteine-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MQDs in environmental applications.

Hollow dendritic Ag/Pt alloy nanoparticles were synthesized by a double template method: Ag nanoparticles as the hard template to obtain hollow spheres by a galvanic replacement reaction between PtCl62− and metallic Ag and surfactant micelles (Brij58) as the soft template to generate porous dendrites. The formation of a Ag/Pt alloy phase was confirmed by XRD and HRTEM. Elemental mapping and line scanning revealed the formation of the hollow architecture. We studied the effects of the Ag/Pt ratio, surfactant and reaction temperature on the morphology. In addition, we explored the formation process of hollow dendritic Ag/Pt nanoparticles by tracking the morphologies of the nanostructures formed at different stages. In order to improve the electrocatalytic property, we controlled the size of the nanoparticles and the thickness of the shell by adjusting the amount of the precursor. We found that these Ag/Pt alloy nanoparticles exhibited high activity (440 mA mg−1) and stability as an electrocatalyst for catalyzing methanol oxidation.

In recent years, platinum-based catalysts are the most promising candidates for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Decrease of the Pt usage is an effective way to obtain low-cost hydrogen production. In order to achieve this goal, we synthesized Pt-Ag/SiNW composites with different dosages of Pt, using inexpensive Ag as a co-catalyst and SiNWs as carriers, and tested their catalytic performance in HER. The results showed that the optimal composition of Pt: Ag: Si = 4.1: 21.5: 74.4 in mass ratio. With such a low amount of Pt, the Pt-Ag/SiNW catalyst exhibited exciting HER performance, whose turnover frequency is 6.3H 2 Pt −1 s −1 at −0.2 V vs. RHE, 2.7 times as large as that of 40 wt% Pt/C. This design greatly increased the utilization ratio of Pt, which may open a new way for preparation of other Pt-based catalysts.

Detection of leaks of flammable methane (CH4) gas in a timely manner can mitigate health, safety, and environmental risks. Zinc oxide (ZnO), a polar semiconductor with controllable surface defects, is a promising material for gas sensing. In this study, Ag–Ru co-doped into self-assembled ZnO nanorod arrays (ZnO NRs) was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. The Ag–Ru co-doped sample shows a good hydrophobic property as a result of its particular microstructure, which results in high humidity resistance. In addition, oxygen vacancy density significantly increased after Ag–Ru co-doping. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed an exceptionally high charge density accumulated at the Ru sites and the formation of a localized strong electric field, which provides additional energy for the CH4 reaction with •O2– at the surface at room temperature. Optimized AgRu0.025–ZnO demonstrated an outstanding CH4 sensing performance, with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 2.24 ppm under free-heat and free-light conditions. These findings suggest that introducing defects into the ZnO lattice, such as oxygen vacancies and localized ions, offers a promising approach to improving the gas sensing performance.

Enhancing upconversion luminescence in rare-earth materials through the plasmonic effects of precious metals has emerged as a highly effective strategy. In this study, we explore three distinct self-assembly techniques to fabricate alloy nano-film substrates using silver-coated gold (Au@Ag) core-shell nanoparticles, each with unique structural attributes. To enhance the upconversion luminescence of Er 3+ ions, we combine these substrates with NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ nanoparticles, creating NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /Au@Ag composite nanostructures. The upconversion emission of Er 3+ ions is observably boosted when directly combined with Au@Ag nano-films of various structures under a 980 nm laser excitation. Surprisingly, incorporating a NaYF 4 inert shell as an isolating layer results in a remarkable 13.7-fold enhancement of upconversion luminescence in the NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ @NaYF 4 /Au@Ag composite structure relative to isolated NaYF 4 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ nanoparticles. The enhancement mechanism was carefully discussed based on spectral characteristics and luminous lifetime. It was found that the enhanced upconversion emission of nanoparticles on differently structured substrates is primarily driven by excitation enhancement. The composite rare-earth and metal nanoparticle structures fabricated in this investigation not only effectively enhance material spectral properties effectively but also streamline the process by employing an inert NaYF 4 shell as an isolation layer. This novel approach offers a promising avenue for developing efficient luminescent material systems.

The stability, reproducibility and engineering of SERS substrate faces a great challenge in melamine SERS assay. In this work, a simple, highly sensitive, stable and cost-efficient SERS detection platform for melamine was established based on its Raman fingerprints spectrum. The Ag@ porous silicon photonic crystal (Ag@PPC) was prepared as the 3D SERS substrate by electrochemical etching and magnetron sputter technology. The main influence factors for the preparation of SERS substrate were investigated in detail. The analytical enhancement factor of the 3D SERS substrate can reach to 2.6 × 10 8 . The 3D SERS detection platform showed a wide linear detection range of 10 −4 ∼10 mg L −1 and a low limit of detection of 0.1 μg L −1 for melamine. Moreover, such detection platform showed good stability, high reproducibility and high recovery rates for melamine. The 3D Ag@PPC SERS substrate can be easily prepared and engineered, displaying a great potential application in food safety field.

Quaternary Ag-In-Ga-S (AIGS) quantum dot (QD) is considered a promising, spectral-tunable, and environmentally friendly luminescent display material. However, the more complex surface defect states of AIGS QDs resulting from the coexistence of multiple elements lead to a low (< 60%) photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Here, we develop a novel convenient method to introduce Z-type ligands ZnX 2 (X = Cl, Br, I) for passivating the surface defects of AIGS QDs to dramatically enhance the PLQY and stability without affecting the crystalline structure and morphology. Results show that the addition of ZnCl 2 during the purified process of AIGS QDs leads to a 3-fold increase of PLQY (from 28.5% to 87%). Impressively, the highest PLQY is up to a recorded value of 92%, which is comparable to typical heavy metal QDs. Exciton dynamics studies have shown that the rapid annihilation process of excitons in treated QDs is inhibited. We also confirm that the improvement in PLQY is a result of the effective passivation of the non-coordinating atom on the QD surface by building a new bonding between sulfur dangling and Zn 2+ . The realization of high PLQY will further promote the application of AIGS QDs in luminescent displays.

Corrosion and fouling problems are two main challenges for devices working in the ocean. However, most existing solutions lack the ability to concurrently obtain corrosion resistance and antifouling behavior. Here, a novel waterborne epoxy (WEP) based composite coating that has remarkable resistance to corrosion and fouling is developed. The WEP-based composite coating consists of nanohybrid filler prepared by loading silver (Ag) nanoparticles on graphite nanoplatelets (GNP) surface through a facile in situ hydrothermal synthesis and polydopamine (PDA) modification. The PDA modification effectively improves the dispersion and compatibility of GNP/Ag@PDA (GAP) with the WEP matrix. The synergistic effect of Ag with chemical antifouling behavior and GNP with physical barrier function endows the GAP/WEP composite coating with a low corrosion rate of 1.04 × 10 −7 mm a −1 after immersing in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 28 days, which is about two orders of magnitude lower than that of blank WEP coating, and a high inhibition rate of 90.81% after immersing in Phaeodactylum tricornutum solution for 7 days. This approach has the potential to address the needs of a range of applications around anticorrosion and antifouling in the ocean.

Mesoporous TiO 2 with a homogeneous Bi-Ag bimetallic distribution (Bi@Ag@MTs) can be obtained by calcination of a titanium-based metal organic framework (MOF, MIL-125) with Bi and Ag loading and applied to the photocatalytic reduction of nitrate using formic acid as a hole scavenger. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analyses show that Ag(I) and Bi(III) are present in MTs as fine clusters and Bi@Ag@MTs have a specific pancake structure, which provides a good carrier for photocatalytic reaction. The contents of Ag and Bi in Bi@Ag@MTs can be up to 2.28 wt% and 0.54 wt% analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES). Under UV irradiation, Bi@Ag@MTs(0.2,0.4) showed a high reduction rate (3.28 h −1 , 4.2 times that of P25), high conversion (100 %, 1.3 times that of P25) and high N 2 selectivity (89.2 %, 2.1 times that of P25) for nitrate reduction. In addition, Bi@Ag@MTs(0.2,0.4) showed good reusability, with the respective NO 3 − conversion and N 2 selectivity still reaching 82.2 % and 78.0 % after four cycles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that under UV irradiation, part of Ag(I) would be reduced to Ag 0 , and the formed Ag-Ag 2 O structure helped to improve the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst. This preparation strategy provides assistance in the design of photocatalytic materials with significant activity and durability for nitrate reduction.

Noble metal modifications can promote surface interactions between target vapors and metal oxides. The surface effect plays a significant role in influencing the gas response of materials. The size range of Ag nanoparticles is about 20–30 nm, which are uniformly modified on the surface of α-MoO 3 . This was achieved through a chemical reduction method, where sodium borohydride served as the reducing agent and L-lysine was utilized as a stabilizer for the nanoparticles. The uniform coating of Ag nanoparticles on the α-MoO 3 is expected to enhance the gas-sensing properties of the composite material. The α-MoO 3 sensor based on 10 mol% AgNPs modification showed the highest response at 200 ℃, which was 1.6 and 1.66 times greater than the response of the pristine α-MoO 3 sensor when tested at concentrations of 5 and 10 ppm, respectively. For H 2 S levels of 10, 20, and 40 ppm, the times for response and recovery were merely 9/20 s, 7/24 s, and 9/25 s, respectively, showing fast response recovery characteristics. The enhancement of the gas-sensitive sensing mechanism for hydrogen sulfide can be explained in terms of the electronic sensitization and chemical sensitization of α-MoO 3 .
