Efficient and stable dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene over vanadia supported on ultra-fine Al2O3 nanofibers with excellent physicochemical properties

Quanhua Wang,Yuhao Zong,Yanchao Liu,Haixia Hu,Yanwei Yue,Xingxing Xie,Lixing Guo,Qingyuan Hu,Hu Wang,Jinke Li,Jiajun Shi,Lichen Zhang,Jiajun Zheng,Shuwei Chen

The design and development of a highly efficient and stable catalyst for styrene (ST) obtained from ethylbenzene (EB) dehydrogenation reaction is urgently required because a commercial Fe–K-based catalyst often undergoes severe deactivation resulted from the active phase decomposition into inactive ferrite compound at high temperatures (>600 °C). Herein, ultra-fine Al 2 O 3 nanofibers which are further self-assembled to form uniform rod-like morphology (R–Al 2 O 3 ) were fabricated via a facile sol-gel strategy and further utilized as support to dispersing vanadium species (V/R–Al 2 O 3 ). The physicochemical properties of the samples were systematically characterized by XRD, Raman, SEM, TEM, H 2 -TPR, CO 2 -TPD, XPS, and 27 Al MAS NMR techniques. It is found that except that R–Al 2 O 3 support has the merits of a high specific surface area, lager pore volume, and uniform mesopore structure, the presence of the unsaturated pentacoordinate Al 3+ ions plays a pivotal role in better dispersing V active species, with the existence of the isolate and/or polymeric forms. As compared to V/C–Al 2 O 3 (commercial Al 2 O 3 as support), the V/R–Al 2 O 3 catalyst endows outperformed catalytic performances for oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene in the presence of CO 2 (OEBDH-CO 2 ). In which, the V/R–Al 2 O 3 catalyst gives a high EB catalytic activity and good stability without significant deactivation phenomenon being detected even after the third regeneration test. Such a result can be principally ascribed to that R–Al 2 O 3 support with excellent textural properties can better disperse V species so as to expose more active sites, which is beneficial for improving the conversion efficiency of EB. More importantly, keeping/regaining high valence state of V species in the V/R–Al 2 O 3 catalyst under CO 2 as a soft oxidant effectively promotes Mars-Van Krevelen redox cycle, further suppressing the catalyst deactivation. This work provides a rational design strategy for a high efficiency and stable dehydrogenation catalyst by optimizing the textural properties of Al 2 O 3 support and introducing the unsaturated pentacoordinate Al 3+ ions.

Electrochemically Engineered Hierarchical Flower-like Ag Nanostructures within Al2O3 Honeycomb Microchannel Periodic Arrays for Ultra-Sensitive SERS Detection

Penghui Wei,Jiajia Song,Haibin Tang,Qinglin Shi,Yongqing Ma,Ganhong Zheng,Meiling Wang,Sajid Imran,Muhammad Usman Amin,Yilin Lu,Chuhong Zhu

In this study, we present a simple and facile synthesis approach to fabricate highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates by electrodeposition of silver (Ag) nanostructures into aluminum oxide (Al2O3) honeycomb microchannel periodic arrays (HMPAs). The spatial confinement and morphology of Ag nanostructures was precisely tuned by varying different deposition parameters. The SERS performance of the as prepared Ag nanostructures were evaluated. The hierarchical flower-like Ag nanostructures demonstrated the highest Raman signal enhancement as compared to other nanostructures electrodepsosited in the HMPAs. The densely packed network of plasmonic "hot spots" generated by the hierarchical flower-like Ag nanostructures, as well as the confinement of analyte molecules near the metal surface in Al2O3 HMPAs, are responsible for Raman signal enhancement. The hierarchical flower-like Ag nanostructure array achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 9.3 × 10⁻11 M for rhodamine 6G (R-6G) and an enhancement factor (EF) of 6.99 × 107. This work highlights the significance of nanostructure’s precision over a large area and spatial confinement of analyte molecules in or near "hot spots", for enhanced SERS sensitivity and broad applicability in chemical analysis.

Composition-Structure Correlations in Al2O3–NaPO3–SiO2 Mixed-Network Former Glasses: Insights from Advanced Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

Ke Liang,Lili Hu,Jinjun Ren

Mixed-network former glasses have drawn considerable attention for their ability to combine the advantages of different glass formers. However, chemical incompatibilities among formers often lead to phase separation, hindering practical applications. In this work, glasses with the composition xAl2O3-(80-x)NaPO3-20SiO2 (x = 0, 10, 15, 20, 25 mol %) were synthesized via the melt-quenching method. The atomic-scale structure of these glasses was elucidated using advanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) techniques, including single pulse Magic Angle Spinning (MAS), 31P refocused Incredible Natural Abundance Double Quantum Transfer Experiment (refocused INADEQUATE), Double-Quantum based Dipolar Recoupling Effects Nuclear Alignment Reduction (DQ-DRENAR), 27Al{31P} Rotational Echo Double Resonance (REDOR), 31P{27Al} Rotational Echo Adiabatic Passage Double Resonance (REAPDOR). The results reveal that the 80NaPO3-20SiO2 glass predominantly contains homonuclear linkages (P–O–P, Si–O–Si), while heteronuclear P–O–Si bonds are less favored, leading to Na+ ions enrichment in phosphate-rich regions and evident phase separation. Incorporating Al2O3 promotes P–O–Al bond formation; when the average number of Al atoms bonded per phosphorus exceeds 2, further alumina incorporation promotes the formation of Si–O–Al linkages. Concurrently, Na+ ions begin to migrate from the vicinity of phosphate tetrahedra [PO4] toward silicate tetrahedra [SiO4]. This compositional evolution facilitates the progressive formation of Si–O–Al–O–P linkages, which effectively suppresses phase separation and yields a more homogeneous glass structure.

Phase equilibria of the Er2O3–Al2O3–SiO2 system at 1600°C related to corrosion of environmental barrier coatings

Junjie Shi,Sheng Li,Chenglin Kang,Futong Li,Min Chen,Shizhuo Yin,Jianzhong Li

This study presents the first systematic experimental determination of phase equilibria in the Er 2 O 3 –Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 system at 1600°C in air, employing the high-temperature isothermal equilibration method followed by rapid drop-quenching to preserve high-temperature phase assemblages. The mineralogy and chemical compositions of the equilibrated samples were analyzed by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron probe x-ray microanalysis (EPMA). One single liquid equilibria, five two-phase equilibria (liquid–SiO 2 , liquid–Er 2 Si 2 O 7 , liquid–Er 3 Al 5 O 12 , liquid–Al 2 O 3 , and liquid–mullite) and seven three-phase equilibria (liquid–SiO 2 –Er 2 Si 2 O 7 , liquid–Er 2 Si 2 O 7 –Er 2 SiO 5 , liquid–Er 2 SiO 5 –Er 3 Al 5 O 12 , liquid–Er 3 Al 5 O 12 –Al 2 O 3 , liquid–Al 2 O 3 –mullite, Er 2 O 3 –Er 2 SiO 5 –Er 4 Al 2 O 9 , Er 3 Al 5 O 12 –Er 2 SiO 5 –Er 4 Al 2 O 9 ) were observed in the equilibrium ternary system. The 1600°C isothermal section of the Er 2 O 3 –Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 phase diagram in air ( p O 2 = 0.21 atm) was constructed based on the present experimentally determined equilibrium phase compositions. The liquid area and the primary fields of SiO 2 , Er 2 Si 2 O 7 , Er 3 Al 5 O 12 , Al 2 O 3 , and mullite were constructed. The comparison of the present experimental results deviate significantly from the modelling by FactSage (version 8.3) using its “ FactPS ” and “ FToxid ” databases, suggesting that FactSage underestimated the stability of the liquid phase under the present experimental conductions.

Achieving CNTs Growth by Inducing Nanoparticle Nucleation via Non-Active Fe2O3 Clusters Anchored on the α-Al2O3 Surface

Peng Wang,Qianpeng Dong,Chenyu Gao,Lianlian Wang,Ruiliang Wang,Dianming Chu,Wenjuan Bai,Yan He

This research presents a regulation strategy of constructing a heterogeneous bilayer catalyst of Fe and Al2O3, namely, Fe–Al2O3, through interfacial interaction and particle nucleation, in order to modulate the size and catalytic activity of Fe sites and achieve the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Through temperature control, the noncatalytically active Fe2O3 clusters on the surface of Al2O3 are exposed, inducing multiple nucleation of Fe clusters on its surface. Under the synergistic effect of the confinement at the Fe–Al2O3 interface, the fabrication of small Fe nanoparticles is accomplished. The results indicate that the catalytically active Fe nanoparticles have a diameter of approximately 10 nm, and the grown CNTs have a diameter of approximately 15 nm. Based on the systematic characterization results, the nonactive Fe2O3 clusters confined by strong interfacial interaction induce multiple nucleation of Fe on their surface during multiple loading processes, facilitating the formation of nanoparticles. Additionally, the strong interaction between Al2O3 and Fe induces the formation of FeAl4O8, thereby enhancing the thermal stability of the nanoparticles. In conclusion, the targeted regulation of the interfacial interaction of the catalyst active sites offers guidance for the low-cost and large-scale preparation of small nanoparticle catalyst particles.

Development of polydopamine/Cobalt single atom co-doped Al2O3 ceramic membrane: An effective strategy for oil-wastewater treatment

Junjie Wang,Kai Wang,Yuanfeng Chen,Yu Xue,Xinlei Wang,Weiguang Lan,Shengqiong Fang,Rong Fan

This study addresses deficiencies in the anti-fouling properties and long-term operational stability of ceramic membranes exhibiting excellent oil-water separation performance. Using a combined deposition and low-temperature reduction approach, hydrophilic polydopamine (PDA) and transition metal single-atom cobalt (Co 1 ) were immobilized onto alumina ceramic membrane surfaces to fabricate a superhydrophilic anti-fouling Al 2 O 3 ceramic membrane. The separation performance of this membrane for oil/water emulsions was subsequently systematically investigated. The doping of PDA endows the membrane with remarkably high oil/water separation efficiency (above 99 %) and flux (705.6 ± 34.1 L m −2 ·h −1 ). In the Ammonium persulfate (APS) system, Co 1 , through valence state cycling (Co 2+ /Co 3+ ), generate ·OH and SO 4 · - radicals, which promote the free radical chain reaction and endow the membrane with self-cleaning ability. The synergistic molecular interactions within the composite architecture bestow exceptional structural integrity during continuous multiphase separation operations, while establishing innovation in membrane longevity enhancement through energy-barrier elevation against interfacial fouling degradation mechanisms. This work provides a novel strategy for developing anti-fouling membranes with high efficiency in oil-water separation.

Mild extraction of PdAg precious metal components and efficient recovery of Al2O3 supports from spent acetylene hydrogenation catalyst

Qianyuan Zhang,Qihui Wang,Chunli Li,Pinggui Tang,Yongjun Feng

Addressing the challenges of simultaneously extracting Pd and Ag components from spent acetylene hydrogenation catalysts, severe structural damage to the Al 2 O 3 supports, and high wastewater discharge, here, we propose a “hydrochloric acid–ammonium chloride–ammonia” (HCl–NH 4 Cl–NH 3 ) complexation system that enables efficient extraction of PdAg leaching alongside recovery of the Al 2 O 3 supports. The leaching rates of Pd and Ag exhibit an increasing trend with rising concentrations of HCl, NH 4 Cl, and NH 3 , the increase of reaction temperature, and the extension of reaction time. Nevertheless, excessively high HCl concentration, overly elevated reaction temperature, and unduly prolonged reaction time caused some damage to the structure of the alumina support and reduce its mechanical strength. Under optimized conditions (0.2 M HCl, 1.0 M NH 4 Cl, 120 °C, 6 h, 5 wt% ammonia), the PdAg components were efficiently leached while effectively preserving the crystal phase and pore structure of the Al 2 O 3 beads. The leaching rates of Pd and Ag reached 95.6 % and 94.4 %, respectively; and the recovered Al 2 O 3 beads have a pore diameter of 30.8 nm, a specific pore volume of 0.244 mL g −1 , a specific surface area of 29.2 m 2 /g, and a crushing strength of 53.2 N, corresponding to retention rates of 95.2 %, 96.0 %, 100.2 %, and 98.6 %, respectively. The HCl–NH 4 Cl–NH 3 complexation system, combined with cyclic washing, shows advantages of low cost, mild extraction conditions, and reduced wastewater discharge, which keeps to the principles of green development.

Machine learning-based prediction and optimization of performances of porous ZrO2/Al2O3 ceramics: a few-shot learning approach

An Huang,Kai Tan,Xiulan He,Miao Wang,Mingyue Zhou

Porous ZrO 2 /Al 2 O 3 (ZTA) ceramic has shown great potential for fluoride removal from contaminated water owing to its tunable structure, high strength, and excellent chemical stability. The porosity, compressive strength, and fluoride adsorption rate of porous ZTA ceramics prepared by the direct foaming method were systematically studied. A machine learning framework integrating transfer learning, Bayesian optimization, and continuous model refinement was developed to predict and optimize performances of porous ceramics under small-sample conditions. It leverages prior knowledge and limited experimental data to simulate variable-performance relationships. Based on this model, it searches for optimal processing configurations and iteratively improves prediction accuracy. Under the optimal process parameters suggested by the model, the predicted performance (porosity of 91.51 %, compressive strength of 1.58 MPa, and fluoride adsorption rate of 71.71 %) shows strong agreement with experimental results (92.42 %, 1.49 MPa, and 72.49 %), confirming the predictive accuracy achieved through Bayesian optimization. Continuous learning further reduces the mean absolute percentage error of the three performances metrics from 1.02 %∼6.15 % to 0.87 %∼2.74 %, realizing more efficient and reliable material design under data-scarce conditions.

Design of a sandwich-structured cellulose separator with PAN/Al2O3 electrospun layers for high-performance sodium-ion batteries

Lin Zhou,Zikang Hou,Xiangze Kong,Shuangjiang Pan,Bingcheng Liu,Tao Zhao,Xiaoya Jiang,Zhiqiang Shi,Jing Wang

Cellulose-based separators offer sustainability and renewability, yet their poor mechanical strength and large pore size often result in insufficient cycling stability and safety risks in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). In this work, a sandwich-structured separator (LF-ALO), consisting of a cellulose-based paper (LF) core coated on both sides with electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) layers. Compared with LF, LF-ALO exhibits elevated mechanical strength (19.7 MPa), and markedly improved electrolyte wettability (316 %) owing to the robust interconnected fibrous network constructed by PAN and Al 2 O 3 , which facilitate uniform Na + transport and reduce short-circuit risks by optimizing the pore structure of LF. LF-ALO also achieves a high Na + transference number (t Na+  = 0.85), reducing internal resistance and enhancing charge-discharge efficiency. A half-cell with NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NFM) cathode delivers 130 mAh g −1 at 0.1C, retains 95.86 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles, and demonstrates superior rate capability. The high mechanical strength, uniform pore structure, and efficient Na + transport of LF-ALO enhance long-term cycling and contribute to safe operation, highlighting cellulose-based composites for next-generation SIBs.

Engineering the structure of satellitic Pt around Ni on Al2O3 to catalyze methane dry reforming with high durability

Shijun Huang,Yu Song,Shansi Zhong,Panpan Chang,Jinshi Dong,Jiaqiang Yang

Ni based catalysts are widely used in dry reforming of methane (DRM) but still face the issue of deactivation caused by sintering and carbon deposition. Pt doped Ni-Al 2 O 3 catalyst was found of great durability which kept 100 % conversion of CO 2 over 300 h without detectable loss in activity at 700 °C, while Ni-Al 2 O 3 catalyst only maintained ∼10 h at the same condition. It is revealed that Pt and Ni are separately dispersed on Al 2 O 3 with the structure of small Pt particles distributing around Ni like satellites. Kinetic experiments, temperature-programmed surface reactions (TPSR) and DFT calculations indicated that CH 4 prefers to dissociatively adsorb on Pt surface but is hard to deeply crack to carbon because of the high energy barriers. As a result, the respective adsorption of CO 2 on Ni and CH x on Pt surface largely reduced the bear of competitive adsorption and activation of both reactants on individual Ni and thus brought enhanced activity. Additionally, surrounding Pt effectively suppresses the sintering of Ni during reaction.

Single-calcination fabrication of γ-Al2O3 nanofiltration membranes via a polyvinyl alcohol sacrificial interlayer for enhanced water permeance

Rongxue Li,Hongdan Wu,Yuqing Sun,Zhihui Zhou,Shiyi Wang

To overcome the limited permeance of conventional γ-Al 2 O 3 nanofiltration (NF) membranes caused by sol penetration into porous supports and poor interfacial defect control, a single-calcination fabrication strategy incorporating a PVA sacrificial interlayer was developed in this study. This approach enabled simultaneous structural optimization and performance enhancement, while also simplifying the overall fabrication process. At a PVA concentration of 3 wt% and a pre-filling time of 2 min, the average pore size of the γ-Al 2 O 3 separation layer increased from 2.04 to 2.39 nm, and the pure-water permeance improved from 8.22 to 17.68 L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 . This enhancement is attributed to the PVA pre-filling, which effectively suppressed the infiltration of AlOOH sol into the large pores of the support and generated open micro-pores upon calcination, thereby forming a more uniform and better-connected pore structure and consequently reducing mass-transfer resistance, which contributed to a synergistic “shielding-pore-forming” effect. Owing to the optimized pore architecture and stabilized interfacial charge, the γ-Al 2 O 3 membrane exhibited high rejection of MgCl 2 (91.62 %) and CaCl 2 (86.86 %), while maintaining relatively high permeace toward NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 . This separation behavior is governed by the combined effects of size sieving and the Donnan exclusion. Long-term operation and NaClO-cleaning tests further verified that the membrane retained its structural integrity and stable separation performance. This green and facile fabrication strategy offers a practical route for the low-cost production of high-performance ceramic NF membranes and shows considerable promise for engineering-scale applications.

Tailoring mechanical and surface property of Al2O3 fiber membranes through rare earth doping for enhanced oil-water separation

Changjian Feng,Xin Ning,Fang Liu,Lilan Huang,Hongqiang Wang,Lin Lv,Jiao Li

Flexible hydrophobic Al 2 O 3 fiber membranes doped with rare earth elements (La, Sm, Ho) were successfully fabricated via electrospinning, and the impact of rare earth doping on their mechanical and surface properties was systematically investigated. The incorporation of rare earth elements effectively suppresses Al 2 O 3 grain growth, relieves grain boundary stress, and consequently enhances the flexibility and tensile strength of the membranes. Notably, the Ho-Al 2 O 3 membrane exhibits the best flexibility and tensile strength (1.08 MPa). Furthermore, rare earth doping induces a transformation to hydrophobic surfaces for the La-Al 2 O 3 , Sm-Al 2 O 3 , and Ho-Al 2 O 3 fiber membranes, as evidenced by water contact angles of 149°, 137°, and 142°, respectively. This hydrophobicity is attributed to the formation of rare earth oxides on the fiber surface, which increases hydrocarbon affinity and lowers surface energy. The resulting doped membranes demonstrate excellent antifouling performance, achieving high permeation flux and separation efficiency in oil-water separation. The La-Al 2 O 3 membrane exhibits the highest flux (2921 L/(m 2 ·h)) and efficiency (98.4 %), owing to its superior surface hydrophobicity. These findings provide a mechanistic foundation for tailoring the microstructure and wettability of ceramic fiber membranes through rare earth doping, offering a promising strategy for advanced oil-water separation.
