Graphite felt (GF) supported cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) composite with sulfation pretreatment (H 2 SO 4 -CeO 2 /GF) was prepared by the impregnation method and employed as the catalyst to activate H 2 O 2 for degradation of isoniazid (INH). The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). The results showed that H 2 SO 4 -CeO 2 /GF had good properties in activating H 2 O 2 for the degradation of INH. The INH removal was about 89.4% in 120 min under the following conditions: H 2 O 2 2.94 mM, H 2 SO 4 -CeO 2 /GF 2.6 g/L, INH 10 mg/L, initial pH at 6.8 and temperature at 25 °C. The effects of some reaction parameters, including initial H 2 O 2 concentration, initial INH concentration, initial pH value, the catalyst dosage and reaction temperature, on INH degradation were investigated. On the basis of mechanism study and intermediate analysis, the possible degradation pathway of INH was proposed. Besides, effective degradation of methyl orange (MO) and norfloxacin (NOF) also confirmed the high activity of H 2 SO 4 -CeO 2 /GF in activation of H 2 O 2 . The H 2 SO 4 -CeO 2 /GF was relatively stable, showing good application prospects. Acidified cerium oxide/GF composite (H 2 SO 4 -CeO 2 /GF) was prepared by impregnation. The activity of H 2 SO 4 -CeO 2 /GF for activation of H 2 O 2 is high even at pH 7.0. The catalyst of H 2 SO 4 -CeO 2 /GF is stable and has great potential for application. The role of acidification of sulfuric acid in the catalyst is explained.

Chemical looping hydrogen generation (CLG) is a promising pathway that can offer both the high purity hydrogen as well as the efficient CO 2 capture capability. However, this process was significantly hindered by the lack of active oxygen carriers at relatively low temperatures. Mixed ionic-electronic (MIEC) supported iron oxides exhibit desirable redox performance for the improved oxygen-ion conductivity. In this work, we prepared several A x Ce 1-x O 2-δ (A = Gd, La; x = 0, 0.1, 0.3) supported Fe 2 O 3 for hydrogen production at 750 °C. It was shown that Fe 2 O 3 /Gd 0.3 Ce 0.7 O 2-δ shows the highest hydrogen generation performance and stability over 50 redox cycles. The reactivity follows the sequence of: Fe 2 O 3 /Gd 0.3 Ce 0.7 O 2-δ > Fe 2 O 3 /La 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 2-δ > Fe 2 O 3 /Gd 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 2-δ > Fe 2 O 3 /La 0.3 Ce 0.7 O 2-δ . The fundamental investigation shows that the doping of rare earth (Gd, La) into CeO 2 contributes to the formation of oxygen vacancies , thus improving the lattice oxygen diffusion. The enhanced hydrogen generation performance attributes to the high lattice oxygen diffusion to improve the reactivity and inhibiting outward diffusion of Fe. The roughly linear relation between the oxygen vacancy concentration and chemical looping performance can be extended to predict the performance of oxygen carriers for other chemical looping applications, methane reforming, combustion, and ethane dehydrogenation , etc .

CO 2 as a rich source of carbon can provide an alternative route to produce value-added chemicals. Electrocatalysis is one of the most promising approaches to convert CO 2 captured from the atmosphere into valuable chemicals. However, the CO 2 molecule is relatively stable and requires a large amount of energy to activate CO 2 for conversion. We develop a new creative type of solid-state CO 2 fuel cell that can generate high-value-added chemicals through electrochemical reduction of CO 2 without external electrical energy input while achieving self-power generation, operating in the medium temperature range of 400–700 ℃. This study demonstrates a fuel cell operating at 570 °C, which achieves a current density of 686.0 A·m −2 and a power density of 98.8 W·m −2 . Under these conditions, the fuel cell achieved a product formation rate of 140.0 μmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 . The system’s operational parameters enable its integration into combined heat and power (CHP) generation, simultaneously facilitating CO 2 conversion, thereby aligning with sustainable energy and emissions reduction strategies.

Flame aerosol synthesis is a continuous one-step method to obtain metal oxides. However, production of uniform particle is considered an inherent challenge for flame aerosol synthesis from aqueous solution. It is necessary to fully understand the synthesis route and the essential governing factors to break through the barrier. A series of flames with different temperatures were employed to synthesize WO 3 , CeO 2 and the WO 3 /CeO 2 composite powders. Flame temperature and precursor concentration were investigated to determine the synthesis pathways from aqueous droplet to particle. Size distribution of the powders indicated that they were homogeneous (unimodal) micron particles at low temperature flame process, nanopowders at high temperature, and inhomogeneous (bimodal) particles in between. Two distinct pathways (droplet-particle and droplet-vapor-particle) were generalized from experiments and verified by size statistics. It was the competition between the temperature of flame and the vapor pressure of precursor solute that played an important role on selection of pathways. Based on the different response to temperature, the nanosized WO 3 /CeO 2 mixture and nanoparticle-decorated WO 3 @CeO 2 were designed. Furthermore, this generalized method was applicable for other tungsten oxide nanostructured catalysts, e.g. WO 3 @Al 2 O 3 , WO 3 @ZrO 2 .

The catalytic conversion of CO 2 to formic acid (FA) represents a promising route for carbon utilization and sustainable chemical production. However, this process faces thermodynamic limitations and requires highly efficient catalysts. Conventional synthesis methods often lead to structural inhomogeneity and involve complex procedures, constraining their efficiency and scalability. To overcome these limitations, we developed a one-pot solvothermal approach combined with calcination to fabricate Ru/CeO 2 catalysts. The as-synthesized catalysts feature atomically dispersed Ru species, a significantly increased concentration of oxygen vacancies on CeO 2 , and enhanced metal-support interactions, which work synergistically to promote reactant activation and catalytic performance. Under mild reaction conditions, the optimized Ru/CeO 2 catalyst delivered high performance, achieving a turnover number (TON) of 1112 and a turnover frequency (TOF) of 139 h −1 . Moreover, the catalyst maintained high stability and recyclability over multiple reaction cycles, underscoring its potential for industrial implementation. This study offers an efficient and scalable synthesis strategy for designing high-performance heterogeneous catalysts, thereby advancing carbon emission mitigation and sustainable chemical synthesis.

Uniformly dispersed and confined hm-Ni/CeO 2 catalysts were synthesized for CO 2 hydrogenation. • The hm-Ni/CeO 2 outperforms its mesoporous counterpart, reaching 84.56% CO 2 conversion at 325 °C with good stability. • The hm-Ni/CeO 2 possesses abundant oxygen vacancies and a higher Ni distribution. • In-situ DRIFTS and DFT studies confirmed that the enhanced methanation performance originates from oxygen vacancies promoting the formate pathway. Confined structure catalysts are widely dedicated to boosting catalytic activity and stability , while controlling their micro-environment and intermediate species remains a challenge. Herein, mesoporous (m-Ni/CeO 2 ) and hollow mesoporous (hm-Ni/CeO 2 ) catalysts were prepared via electrospinning and evaluated for CO 2 hydrogenation to methane. The hm-Ni/CeO 2 catalyst exhibits superior performance, achieving 84.56% CO 2 conversion at 325 °C, along with enhanced low-temperature activity compared to the m-Ni/CeO 2 catalyst. Characterizations revealed that the hm-Ni/CeO 2 catalyst possesses a higher oxygen vacancies and improved Ni dispersion, thereby enhancing metal-support interaction. Furthermore, synchrotron radiation and in-situ DRIFTS confirmed that the hm-Ni/CeO 2 catalyst facilitates the formation of bridging bidentate formate intermediates, which are more favorable for CH 4 production. Finally, DFT verified the predominance of the formate pathway and revealed that oxygen vacancies substantially enhance the reactivity of CO 2 methanation. This work not only develops a novel synthetic strategy for confined porous catalysts but also provides fundamental insights into the role of oxygen vacancies in CO 2 hydrogenation. Citric acid adsorbed CeO 2 forms a uniformly dispersed nanoparticle sol, acting as a special “glue” to uniformly adhere to the surface of the NiMoO 4 precursor. • Under high-temperature reduction, a CeO 2-x modified NiMo alloy with strong interaction is synthesized. • The optimized composite electrocatalyst achieves an overpotential of only 48 mV at 10 mA cm -2 with the stability for over 1,500 h at 500 mA cm -2 . • In situ Raman spectra and DFT calculations indicate that the CeO 2-x /NiMo alloy interface accelerates water dissociation and enhances alkaline HER performance. NiMo alloys are promising non-precious metal electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), however, they suffer from issues such as poor stability due to Mo leaching and insufficient intrinsic activity. In this study, a citric acid (CA) assisted CeO 2-x modification strategy is developed to prepare a CeO 2-x /NiMo alloy composite electrocatalyst with high activity and stability. CA is uniformly adsorbed onto the surface of CeO 2 nanoparticles, and the cross-linked CA network with the CeO 2 particles forms a uniformly dispersed nanoparticle sol, which acts as a special “glue” to uniformly adhere to the surface of the NiMoO 4 precursor, forming a CeO 2 /NiMoO 4 composite precursor. Following high-temperature reduction, a CeO 2-x modified NiMo alloy electrocatalyst is synthesized. Owing to the strong interaction between CeO 2-x and NiMo, the optimized composite electrocatalyst achieves a current density of 10 mA cm -2 at an overpotential of only 48 mV and it maintains high stability for over 1500 h at a current density of 500 mA cm -2 , which is three times longer than that of the unmodified NiMo alloy electrocatalyst, outperforming most reported nickel-molybdenum-based electrocatalysts. In situ Raman spectra and density functional theory calculations indicate that the CeO 2-x /NiMo alloy interface accelerates water dissociation, hydrogen combination and enhances alkaline HER performance. This work provides a new approach for the preparation of highly active and stable nickel-molybdenum-based hydrogen evolution catalysts. A citric acid assisted CeO 2-x modification strategy is developed to prepare a highly-active and stabile CeO 2-x /NiMo alloy electrocatalyst for HER. Nitrous oxide (N2O) has gained increasing attention as a potent greenhouse gas, and its catalytic decomposition offers a promising mitigation strategy. In this study, single-atom Ru embedded in a rod-shaped CeO2 catalyst was synthesized via a H2O2 chemical etching strategy. The single-atom Ru catalyst demonstrated an exceptional N2O decomposition performance with only 0.48 wt % Ru loading, exhibiting a 34-fold increase in the turnover frequency compared to Ru nanoparticle catalysts. Under simulated exhaust conditions (NO, CO, and N2O), Ru1/CeO2 enabled complete conversion of all three pollutants at 280 °C. Mechanistic studies revealed that N2O decomposition over Ru1/CeO2 and Run/CeO2 followed the Mars–van Krevelen (MvK) and Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) mechanisms, respectively. The exceptional N2O decomposition activity of the single-atom catalyst stems from enhanced O2 desorption through the recombination of oxygen atoms that dissociate from N2O with adjacent lattice oxygen. Notably, Ru1/CeO2 exhibits remarkable O2 tolerance due to the selective adsorption: N2O binds to single Ru atoms, whereas O2 occupies oxygen vacancies. In contrast, the high energy barrier associated with O2 combination and desorption in Run/CeO2 hindered N2O decomposition, and the competitive adsorption of O2 on its surface led to poor O2 resistance. This study demonstrates Ru1/CeO2 as an efficient catalyst for abating N2O and multipollutant removal.

High activity and productivity of MoVNbTeO x catalyst are challenging tasks in oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) for industrial application. In this work, phase-pure M1 with 30 wt% CeO 2 composite catalyst was treated by oxygen plasma to further enhance catalyst performance. The results show that the oxygen vacancies generated by the solid-state redox reaction between M1 and CeO 2 capture active oxygen species in gas and transform V 4+ to V 5+ without damage to M1 structure. The space-time yield of ethylene of the plasma-treated catalyst was significantly increased, in which the catalyst shows an enhancement near ∼100% than that of phase-pure M1 at 400 °C for ODHE process. Plasma treatment for catalysts demonstrates an effective way to convert electrical energy into chemical energy in catalyst materials. Energy conversion is achieved by using the catalyst as a medium.

In this study, we utilized a green method to prepare the material precursor (CC/CA/Ni2+-Ce3+) by using commercial cotton cloth (CC) and cellulose acetate (CA) as sources, leveraging the synergistic chelation effect of cellulose acetate and cotton cloth to coordinate nickel and cerium ions. Subsequently, precursor CF-C/Ni-CeO2 was obtained through high-temperature pyrolysis, followed by phosphidation to form the CF-C/Ni2P-CeO2 heterostructure. Within this structure, CeO2 acts as an “electron acceptor”, enabling electron transfer from Ni2P to CeO2 and promoting rapid charge redistribution through an oxygen vacancy-mediated electron–ion cooperative transport mechanism. This process optimizes the adsorption free energy of hydrogen intermediates (ΔGH*) during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This synergistic effect of dual active sites enables the CF-C/Ni2P-CeO2-2 electrode with outstanding HER catalytic performance under alkaline conditions, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at an overpotential of only 102 mV and 100 mA cm–2 at 234 mV, while maintaining stability for more than 50 h at a high current of approximately 100 mA cm–2.

Photocatalytic urea production from nitrogen (N 2 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to the Bosch-Meiser route. However, it remains a significant challenge in developing highly efficient photocatalysts for enhancing C-N coupling to high-yield urea synthesis. Herein, we propose a multi-site photocatalyst concept to address the concern of low yield by simultaneously improving photogenerated carrier separation and reactant activation. As a proof of concept, a well-defined multi-site photocatalyst, Ru nanoparticles and Cu single atoms decorated CeO 2 nanorods (Ru-Cu/CeO 2 ), is developed for efficient urea production. The incorporation of Ru and Cu sites is crucial not only to generate high-density photogenerated electrons, but also to facilitate N 2 and CO 2 adsorption and conversion. The in situ formed local nitrogen-rich area at Ru sites increases the encounter possibility with the carbon-containing species generated from Cu sites, substantially promoting C-N coupling. The Ru-Cu/CeO 2 photocatalyst exhibits an impressive urea yield rate of 16.7 μmol g −1 h −1 , which ranks among the best performance reported to date. This work emphasizes the importance of multi-site catalyst design concept in guaranteeing rapid C-N coupling in photocatalytic urea synthesis and beyond.

In this study, three kinds of CeO2were synthesized, and supported PdOx(x = 0,1) catalysts were prepared for benzene catalytic combustion. The samples were characterized by XRD, N2adsorption/desorption, HRTEM, XPS and H2-TPR. The results show that three kinds of CeO2with different structures can be formed by different preparation methods. This is mainly reflected in the differences in pore structure, particle size and crystal plane. CeO2-DC obtained from directly calcined Ce(NO3)3·6H2O had the largest pore volume and pore diameter and smallest particle size. CeO2-DC was mainly exposed to the (200) plane. Combined with the results of the ability test, it could be concluded that when Pd2+and Pd0exist at the same time, the activity increases with an increase in the proportion of Pd2+. Meanwhile, the structure of CeO2affects the formation of oxygen vacancies, thereby affecting the adsorption and degradation of benzene. This article reveals that the particle size, crystal planes, oxygen vacancies and proportion of Pd2+have a great impact on the catalytic combustion of benzene and allow a more comprehensive understanding of the structure–activity relationship, which can guide us to design high-efficiency catalysts targeted to obtain suitable CeO2-based catalysts for the catalytic combustion of benzene. Keywords:cerium oxide;benzene;catalytic combustion;particle size;crystal surface
