Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is a key reactive oxygen species involved in physiological regulation and pathological processes, and its accurate quantification is essential for bioanalysis and disease-related studies. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of Cu-Fe oxide nanozymes via a simple antisolvent crystallization strategy and systematically investigate their peroxidase-like catalytic activity toward colorimetric H 2 O 2 detection. By tuning the Cu/Fe molar ratio, the catalytic activity of the nanozymes can be effectively regulated, with Cu 2 FeO x exhibiting the highest peroxidase-like activity toward 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation in the presence of H 2 O 2 under acidic conditions and enabling sensitive colorimetric detection of H 2 O 2 over a linear range of 10–200 µM with a detection limit of 0.572 µM. Furthermore, the proposed sensing platform demonstrates satisfactory selectivity and reproducibility, and is successfully applied to the determination of H 2 O 2 released into cell culture supernatants after chemical stimulation. This work highlights the potential of composition‑regulated Cu-Fe oxide nanozymes as robust artificial enzymes for colorimetric H 2 O 2 sensing and provides insights into their application in bioanalytical systems.

A Cu 2+ -regulated one-step hydrothermal route simultaneously tailors the dimension and facet exposure of WO 3 nanostructures. • In-situ atomically coherent WO 3 /CuWO 4 p-n heterointerfaces stabilize Cu + as highly active oxygen-activation centers. • Cu + /Cu 2+ redox-coupled oxygen activation and H 2 S dissociation enable high response, fast kinetics, and robust selectivity. Precise control over crystal morphology and interfacial electronic structure is pivotal for advancing gas sensing performance, yet simultaneously optimizing these parameters remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report a one-step hydrothermal strategy that orchestrates the dimensional evolution of WO 3 -based nanomaterials from high-aspect-ratio nanorods to ultrathin nanosheets by simply tuning Cu 2+ concentration. This morphological transformation is driven by a synergistic mechanism involving competitive citrate coordination and facet-selective adsorption of Cu 2+ ions. Crucially, this in-situ growth protocol constructs atomically coherent WO 3 /CuWO 4 p-n heterojunctions that uniquely stabilize a high density of metastable Cu + species. These Cu + centers act as potent electron donors, dramatically enriching surface-active superoxide radicals (O 2 − ) and lowering the activation energy for gas reactions. The optimized Cu-WO 3 -1 sensor exhibits exceptional performance toward hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), the sensor exhibits a relatively high response (R a /R g = 218.2 at 50 ppm, 150 °C), ultrafast response/recovery kinetics (13 s/101 s), and remarkable selectivity against interfering gases. Mechanistic studies reveal that the superior performance stems from a dual-function Cu + /Cu 2+ redox cycle: Cu + facilitates efficient H S bond dissociation and oxygen activation, while the reversible formation of conductive CuS and subsequent surface regeneration ensure rapid signal recovery. This work establishes a universal paradigm for synchronizing facet engineering with valence-state modulation to design next-generation high-performance chemiresistive sensors. Employing a one-step Cu 2+ -modulated hydrothermal strategy, we simultaneously achieved dimensional control of WO 3 -based nanostructures and constructed atomically coherent WO 3 /CuWO 4 p–n heterojunctions. This approach successfully stabilized a high density of metastable Cu + species, significantly enriched surface-active superoxide radicals (O 2 − ), and lowered the activation energy for gas reactions. The Cu-WO 3 -1 composite enabled ultrasensitive H 2 S detection, exhibiting a high response of 218.2 toward 50 ppm H₂S at 150 °C, along with rapid response (13 s) and recovery (101 s) kinetics. The outstanding performance originates from a bifunctional Cu + /Cu 2+ redox cycle: Cu + facilitates efficient H S bond cleavage and oxygen activation, while the reversible formation of conductive CuS and the subsequent surface regeneration ensure rapid signal recovery. A natural hydrogel coating confers multifunctionality to polyurethane biointerfaces. • The synergy of CMCS and AgNPs endowed robust, long-lasting antibacterial action. • NO catalytically released by Cu²⁺ enabled superior pro-endothelialization performance. Despite its favorable mechanical properties, the clinical application of polyurethane (PU) in cardiovascular implants is severely limited by surface hydrophobicity, poor hemocompatibility, and insufficient antibacterial and pro-endothelialization functions. To overcome these limitations, we report a robust natural hydrogel coating (PU-Gel/Cu/Ag) with integrated anticoagulant and antibacterial functionalities, fabricated through the initial deposition of a polydopamine (PDA) covalent anchoring layer on polyurethane, followed by the grafting of a carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/sodium alginate (SA) composite co-loaded with copper ions (Cu²⁺) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). A substantial decrease in water contact angle was observed for the coated PU, confirming that the coating markedly improved surface hydrophilicity. In addition, a substantial reduction in hemolysis ratio and fibrinogen adsorption was achieved with the coating, along with potent inhibition of platelet adhesion and activation, which together underscore its outstanding anticoagulant properties. Moreover, cell assays confirmed that the coating not only significantly enhanced endothelial cell (EC) attachment, expansion, and VEGF/NO expression, but also dramatically suppressed smooth muscle cell (SMC) adhesion and proliferation, highlighting its excellent pro-endothelialization and anti-intimal hyperplasia performance. Owing to the intrinsic cationic antibacterial property of carboxymethyl chitosan, combined with the synergistic action of AgNPs, the as-prepared coating demonstrated potent and sustained antimicrobial action that effectively suppressed both Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli. The coating-incorporated Cu²⁺ acted as a durable catalyst that continuously drove NO production from endogenous donors, thereby synergistically augmenting both anticoagulation and pro-endothelialization. This study establishes a new paradigm for the design of multicomponent synergistic coatings, in which the coexistence of Cu²⁺ and AgNPs within a natural hydrogel matrix enables the synergistic regulation of surface wettability, catalytic NO release, and multi-target antibacterial action. This integrated approach fundamentally overcomes the limitations of previously reported single- or dual-functional coatings, offering a broadly applicable and translatable strategy for surface engineering of cardiovascular implant materials. Cu−Co bimetallic catalysts have demonstrated considerable potential for CO 2 hydrogenation to C 2 + alcohols. However, their practical application remains constrained by excessive CH 4 formation arising from the uncontrolled reduction of Co species under reaction conditions. Herein, we report a semi-encapsulated catalyst architecture constructed through a lattice-mismatching strategy. The lattice mismatch between hexagonal CoO (h-CoO) and ZnO is only 0.18%, whereas that between Cu 2 O and ZnO reaches 31.4%. When ZnO serves as the seed crystal, Cu 2 O preferentially nucleates and grows into nanoparticles on the ZnO surface, while h-CoO undergoes epitaxial growth on the exposed ZnO regions, forming a semi-encapsulated configuration in which Cu 2 O nanoparticles are partially confined by an h-CoO overlayer. The strong lattice matching between h-CoO and ZnO stabilizes Co species in an oxidized state under reaction conditions, thereby suppressing the formation of metallic Co and CH 4 production. Meanwhile, the confinement effect imposed by the h-CoO overlayer effectively restricts Cu migration, preserving the Cu−Co interfacial sites that are critical for C−C coupling. As a result, the optimized catalyst achieves a C 2 + alcohol selectivity of 63.7% at 300 ° C, with an ethanol selectivity of 30.0%, and exhibits no noticeable deactivation over 200 h of continuous operation. This work demonstrates that lattice-matching-directed interfacial engineering represents an effective strategy for simultaneously regulating active-phase stability and metal dispersion, offering new insights into the rational design of catalysts for selective CO 2 hydrogenation to C 2 + alcohols.

High-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells offer inherent impurity tolerance and simplified thermal/water management. However, conventional phosphoric acid-doped membranes must be relatively thick (typically >50 μm) to counteract H 3 PO 4 -induced mechanical degradation, leading to ohmic losses that limit fuel cell performance. Here we report a 20-μm-thin, mechanically robust phosphoric acid-doped membrane incorporating dynamic Cu-ion crosslinking for high-power-density high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. The dynamic Cu-polymer coordination establishes dynamic crosslinking networks that provide exceptional toughness and extensibility, alongside spontaneous self-healing capability. Simultaneously, the Cu ions improve H 3 PO 4 retention and proton dissociation through electrostatic interactions and polarization of O–H bonds in H 3 PO 4 molecules. The resulting thin membranes exhibit minimal ohmic resistance (0.06 Ω cm 2 ) while maintaining low H 2 crossover current density (0.95 mA cm −2 ). Fuel cells incorporating this membrane achieved a peak power density of 3.08 W cm −2 at 200 °C (H 2 /O 2 ), with negligible degradation over 503 h at 1.0 A cm −2 and 160 °C.

Iron(III) and copper(II) ions are ubiquitous in the environment, posing potential risks to the environment and human health, which urgently demands rapid detection methods. In this study, a ratiometric fluorescent probe was developed by integrating biomass-based carbon dots with rhodamine B (RhB) for the rapid and accurate detection of Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺. Under normal conditions, the strong coordination ability of Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺ enables them to rapidly occupy the active sites on the surface of carbon dots (CDs), resulting in rapid fluorescence changes. RhB provides a stable reference signal and achieves self-calibrated dual-emission output, thereby reducing matrix and environmental interferences. To address the coexistence of Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺ in practical detection, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was introduced as a selective masking agent, which preferentially forms a stable complex with Fe³⁺. This reduces the signal interference of Fe³⁺ in low-concentration systems and realizes highly selective detection of Cu²⁺. In the detection of Cu²⁺ in actual water samples, the probe exhibits high sensitivity (4.91 µM) and favorable accuracy with recoveries ranging from 97.3% to 99.5%, demonstrating strong reliability in complex samples. This study not only provides a green and sensitive method for Cu²⁺ detection, but also presents an effective strategy for resolving specific detection issues in complex matrices using classical masking agents.

The treatment of copper laden wastewater, particularly from the electroplating industry with the Cu(II) ion concentration ranging from 100 to 300 mg/L, presents a significant challenge for achieving stringent discharge standards. This study reports the synthesis of a pore-expanded core-shell adsorbent with remarkable Cu(II) adsorption performance, accompanied by the electronic-scale investigation of its structure and behavior. This kind of adsorbent both enhances mass transfer and provides abundant chelating sites. It showed superior adsorption performance (122.55 mg/g at 318 K) which originates fundamentally from the electronic heterogeneity of its interfacial coordination environments. By integrating density functional theory (DFT) calculations with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), we systematically decouple the roles of distinct adsorption sites and quantify their electronic interactions with Cu(II). DFT reveals a broad distribution of adsorption energies (−1.650 to −5.989 eV) across three primary coordination modes. Our findings demonstrate that the high adsorption capacity stems from the coexistence of multiple site types: stable multidentate sites enable high metal loading, while electronically active sites with strong charge transfer ability facilitate rapid kinetics. Beyond the specific application, the synergistic strategy of pore-expanded structure and the atomic-scale mechanistic understanding established provide a paradigm for the rational design of advanced adsorbents.

Since multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) assisted semiconductors exhibit enhanced photocatalytic performances, their applications in anti-mold of wood and bamboo products have aroused great interest. Herein, Cu NPs were grown on the surface of graphitic carbon nitride (CN) via the microwave treatment of Cu2+/CN solutions. CN/Cu composites were loaded on beech wood (BW), pine wood (PW), oak wood (OW), and bamboo via the vacuum impregnation. Morphology, crystalline phase, porosity, element distribution and ratio, and elemental chemical state of CN/Cu and CN/Cu-loaded woods and bamboo were systematically investigated. Low leaching rates (6.79%-7.88%) of CN/Cu from matrix demonstrated an excellent stability of loading. Woods and bamboo uniformly loaded with CN/Cu presented the inhibition efficiency of Aspergillus niger after cultivating under visible light for 28 days, i.e., grade 1 for loaded woods and grade 2 for loaded bamboo. By combining the evaluation of band gap, electron paramagnetic resonance and photocurrent of CN/Cu composites, the integration of Cu with CN decreased the photo-generated electron−hole recombination rate and presented wider range of visible light response. Moreover, the synergistic antifungal mechanism of CN/Cu composites under visible light was proposed. This work created a pathway to develop the photocatalytic anti-mold for the preservation of wood and bamboo.

P-xylene (PX) is an essential high-value chemical with a wide range of applications. The use of waste plastics to produce high-valuable chemicals is considered to be one of the most effective and sustainable waste plastic recycling routes. Herein, a simple and efficient CuAlOX catalyst was developed for the upcycling of waste PET plastic to PX. The yield of PX was up to 98%, and the catalyst can be reused for five runs without obvious deactivation. Mechanism investigation indicated that Cu+ and Cu0 are the possible active sites, and the best ratio of Cu+ to Cu0 is 2.9. The optimal Cu+ and Cu0 sites are favorable for the absorption of ester, carboxylic acid, and alcohol groups and the desorption of PX, which is key for the selective hydrodeoxygenation of PET to PX.

EuTiO 3 -based materials (ETO) exhibit impressive magnetocaloric performance, but the low thermal conductivity restricts their practical applications. Therefore, enhancing the thermal conductivity of these materials is crucial to advance their applications in magnetic refrigeration technology. Herein, we present a novel approach to enhance the thermal conductivity of EuTiO 3 -based magnetocaloric materials by constructing continuous Cu networks. For this purpose, copper plating layers were deposited on the surface of EuTi 0.75 Al 0.125 Zr 0.125 O 3 (ETAZO) powders via electroless plating. The influences of plating temperature, pH value, and plating duration on the structure and morphology of the plated copper layer were investigated, obtaining the optimal process for electroless copper plating on ETAZO microspheres. The formation process of copper plating layers was investigated, revealing the mechanism of electroless copper plating. On this basis, continuous Cu networks were successfully constructed in a cold-pressed ETAZO/Cu composite. The high thermal conductivity of copper enables rapid heat conduction through Cu networks, thereby significantly enhancing the thermal conductivity of the composite. Encouragingly, the thermal conductivity of the composite reaches 2.18 W m −1 K −1 at 4.2 K, indicating an increase of 35 times compared to ETAZO (0.06 W m −1 K −1 ). Meanwhile, the maximum magnetic entropy change of the composite under the magnetic field change of 0‒1 T remains 15.6 J kg −1 K −1 , exhibiting impressive magnetocaloric performance. The combination of outstanding magnetocaloric effect and high thermal conductivity enables ETAZO/Cu composite to be a practical cryogenic magnetic refrigerant.

The industrial hydrochlorination of acetylene to vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) remains constrained by the indispensable yet environmentally hazardous mercury chloride catalyst. To date, the exceptional activity and long‑term stability of mercury‑based systems have hindered their replacement. Inspired by the performance of mercury-based catalysts, we rationally engineered an environmentally benign and cost‑effective copper‑based alternative. Compared to copper species, the weaker intermolecular interactions and appropriate activation ability of acetylene towards mercury-based catalysts underpin the superior activity and stability. To mimic these traits, coordinating ligands are applied to tune the geometry and electronic structure of copper sites, resulting in increasing the reaction order of acetylene and augmenting the number of accessible active sites. After reaching a plateau in ligand‑mediated strategy, dispersed copper species are achieved by utilizing a defect support to inhibit the aggregation. The designed copper catalyst achieves the deactivation rate of 0.018 % per hour in a 400-hour stability test, which is comparable to the performance of mercury-based catalysts. This work provides a general principle for balancing site dispersion, electronic modulation and support engineering for designing an effective catalyst.

The rational surface regulation of Cu electrocatalysts through doping foreign components has emerged as a feasible pathway in electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction. Herein, the catalysts comprising the Cu 0 -Sm 3+ -Cu + sites are reported to explore the doping-driven the alteration of surface structure and properties. The incorporation of Sm with oxygen affinity in Cu 2 O/Cu decreases the crystallite sizes and evokes lattice expansion of Cu 2 O and Cu to generate surface defects. The interaction of Cu 0 , Sm 3+ and Cu + promotes dual-carbon production by stabilizing Cu + and enhancing *CO coverage and water dissociation. Our findings therefore reveal the role of Sm in promoting beneficial changes of Cu-based electrocatalysts.
