Designing high-performance and cost-effective oxygen-evolution electrocatalysts is highly required toward sustainable water electrolysis. Surface reconstruction is a promising strategy to realize the improvement of the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) performance of transition metal-based electrocatalysts. Herein, we present a simple electrospinning-post treatment route to construct a novel Fe(III)/NiS electrocatalyst and investigate the key role of the surface reconstruction to significantly promote the OER performance. Owing to the unique tubular morphology and the formation of the highly efficient electrochemical active species of Ni(Fe)OOH during OER process, the prepared Fe(III)/NiS nanotubular catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 264 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , superior to the benchmark RuO 2 and many other metal sulfide electrocatalysts. Furthermore, the catalyst also presents an excellent durability with no distinct activity reduction for over 70 h. This study offers a reliable surface reconstruction way to fabricate high-efficiency and outstanding durable OER electrocatalyst, enabling it promising prospect for water electrolysis with a reduced energy consumption.

In this study, Fe/ABTS/PVP nanocomplexes (named FAPs) as photothermal-reinforced catalytic antibacterial agents were prepared using the coordination-induced assembly of Fe (III), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The redox pairs of Fe(II)/Fe(III) in FAPs can catalyze the H 2 O 2 to hydroxyl radicals (•OH) through Fenton reactions, thereby killing effect on bacteria. The photothermal effect of ABTS •+ in FAPs stimulated by near infrared (NIR) irradiation can further improve the catalytic effect, thereby generating more •OH and achieving better antibacterial activity. What's more, the reduction reaction between glutathione (GSH) and ABTS •+ results in the depletion of the GSH level, the redox pair of Fe(II)/Fe(III) is also beneficial in the consumption of GSH. This dual depletion of GSH further expands the intracellular oxidative stress. Thus, the integrated function of photothermal effect, catalytic property, and dual depletion of GSH by FAPs provides a new strategy for fighting against bacterial infections.

Aerogels have interconnected networks and preeminent pore structures. When used as the catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), they can facilitate the mass transfer and expose more active sites. Here, we synthesized the Fe-doped titanium oxide-based aerogels (TA/Fes) by the sol–gel method combined with thermal treatment. The specific surface areas of the TA/Fes ranged from 475 to 774 m2·g−1, and the pore volumes varied from 0.96 to 1.72 cm3·g−1. The doping effect of the Fe ions and the oxygen vacancies in anatase enhance the electrical conductivity, leading to the low Rct (313.3–828.2 Ω). All samples showed excellent stability (2.0–4.5 mV) and 4e−pathway. The limiting current density of TA/Fe3 reached 5.34 mA·cm−2, which was comparable to that of commercial Pt/C. The preparation method is inspiring and the as-prepared aerogel catalysts have potential in promoting the scale of fuel cells.Keywords:TiO2aerogel;Fe ion doping;oxygen vacancy;pore structure;catalysis;ORR

Impregnation handlement can load highly dispersed CuO nanoparticles on the Fe-MFI zeolite and effectively enhances its catalytic activity in the tetracycline degradation reactions, but encounters serious re-usability problems. In this work, Fe-MFI zeolite-encapsulated copper oxide CuO@Fe-MFI was prepared via one-step hydrothermal synthesis and utilized as heterogeneous catalyst for the removal of tetracycline. The obtained 2CuO@1Fe-MFI zeolite presented a external surface area of 270 m 2 /g, which was almost 5.5 folds of 2CuO/1Fe-MFI zeolite obtained by impregnation handlement. In addition, there may be a near-neighbor effect between encapsulated CuO and framework iron evidenced by the shifts of UV–Vis absorption bands as well as binding energies for Fe 2p and Cu 2p. At pH = 7.0, 2CuO@1Fe-MFI zeolite attained the largest tetracycline removal rate of 99.6% within 20 min at experimental conditions: [TCE] = 50 mg/L, [Catalyst] = 0.5 g/L, [PMS] = 1.0 g/L, 323 K, and the biggest degradation rate constant of 2.42 min −1 , which was almost 11.1 folds of that for 2CuO/1Fe-MFI zeolite. The large external surface area and near-neighbor effect together gave rise to the excellent tetracycline degradation performance for 2CuO@1Fe-MFI zeolite. On the same time, the obtained 2CuO@1Fe-MFI zeolite can be reused for more than five times. Quenching experiments and EPR characterizations demonstrated the reactive species for tetracycline removal over 2CuO@1Fe-MFI zeolite were •OH, SO 4 • − , •O 2 − and 1 O 2 species, and moreover 1 O 2 served as the major active species. Furthermore, possible tetracycline degradation pathways over 2CuO@1Fe-MFI zeolite were proposed.

The performance of an electrochemiluminescent reagent directly affects the performance of its corresponding electrochemiluminescent (ECL) sensor. In this study, Fe/Zn-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid metal–organic framework@C-dots (Fe/Zn-BTC@C-dots), which consist of a nano-loaded carbon quantum dot material with an excellent luminescence performance, were synthesised for the first time. Subsequently, they were used to modify the surface of a glassy carbon electrode, and combined with a single-chain thiamethoxam DNA aptamer to construct a biosensor. A novel method for the detection of thiamethoxam was established based on control of the excellent luminescence signal of the Fe/Zn-BTC@C-dots by specific recognition of the aptamer by the target molecule (a signal switch). Upon capturing thiamethoxam, the electrochemical luminescence intensity of the sensor was quenched. The ability of Fe/Zn-BTC to effectively catalyse and amplify the electrochemical luminescence of the C-dots significantly improved the sensitivity of the sensor, while the specific recognition of the target by the aptamer imparted the sensor with an excellent selection ability. Such an advanced approach is promising for the detection of thiamethoxam, with a linear range of 5–5000 × 10 −11 mol/L and a sensitivity of 9.81 × 10 −12 mol/L being achieved. Moreover, the sensor exhibited recovery rates of 90.5–109.3% upon the detection of thiamethoxam in actual samples.

Hyporheic zone (HZ) systems have a natural purification capacity, and they are commonly used to provide high quality drinking water . However, the presence of organic contaminants in HZ systems in anaerobic environments causes the aquifer sediments to release metals (e.g., Fe) at levels above drinking water standards, which affects the quality of groundwater. In this study, the effects of typical organic pollutants (dissolved organic matter (DOM)) on Fe release from anaerobic HZ sediments were investigated. Ultraviolet fluorescence spectroscopy , three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy, excitation–emission matrix spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis and Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing were used to determine the effects of the system conditions on Fe release from HZ sediments. Compared with the control conditions (low traffic and low DOM as a baseline), the Fe release capacity was enhanced by 26.7 % and 64.4 % at low flow rate (85.8 m/d) and high organic matter concentration (1200 mg/L), which was consistent with the residence-time effect. The transport of heavy metals under different system conditions varied with the influent organic composition. The influent organic matter composition and fluorescence parameters (the humification index, biological index and fluorescence index) were closely related to the release of the Fe effluent, while these factors had less influence on Mn and As. From 16S rRNA analysis of the aquifer media at different depths at the end of the experiment, under low flow rate and high influent concentration conditions, reduction of Fe minerals by Proteobacteria , Actinobacteriota , Bacillus , and Acidobacteria promoted the release of Fe. These functional microbes play an active role in the Fe biogeochemical cycle in addition to reducing Fe minerals to promote Fe release. In summary, this study reveals the effects of the flow rate and influent DOM concentration on the release and biogeochemistry of Fe in the HZ. The results presented herein will contribute to a better understanding of the release and transport of common groundwater contaminants in the HZ and other groundwater recharge environments.

Co3O4 has been considered a promising anode material because of its high theoretical capacity (890 mAh/g) and remarkable energy density. Unfortunately, it suffers from low initial coulombic efficiency, rapid capacity fading, poor electronic conductivity, large volume changes, and aggregation during the lithium ion intercalation/deintercalation process. In this work, a series of Fe2+-doped Co3O4 nanostructured materials Co3(1-x)Fe3xO4 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02 and 0.03) were produced by a simple chemical co-precipitation method. The Fe doping led to a slight increase of the lattice parameter, which is beneficial to the rapid diffusion of Li+ ion during the lithiation/delithiation process. Meanwhile, the Fe-doped Co3O4 sample exhibited an excellent rate capability of 886.47 mAh/g at 500 mA/g, and outstanding cyclic stability (1156.91 mAh/g for 50 cycles, with the capacity retention rate of 83.53% at the current density of 100 mA/g), demonstrating improved electrochemical performance, compared with that of pure Co3O4. The good electrochemical performance profited from the formation of oxygen vacancies by Fe doping, which provided more space for Li+ diffusion and improved the electronic conductivity of the anode material. This work provides a simple way to improve the comprehensive electrochemical performance of the transitional metal oxide Co3O4 anode electrodes for lithium-ion batteries.

Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show high activity toward the activation of peroxodisulfate (PDS) for the removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in wastewater treatment. However, there is a phenomenon of Fe ion dissolution in the Fe-based MOFs’ active PDS system, and the reasons and influencing factors that cause Fe ion dissolution are poorly understood. In this study, we synthesized four types of Fe-based MOFs and confirmed their crystal structure through characterization. All types of Fe-based MOFs were found to activate PDS and form sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ), which effectively remove OMPs in wastewater. During the process of Fe-based MOFs activating PDS for CIP removal, activated species, oxidant reagent, and pH negatively impact the stability performance of the MOFs’ structure. The coordination bond between Fe atom and O atom can be attacked by water molecules, free radicals, and H + , causing damage to the crystal structure of MOFs. Additionally, Fe (II)-MOFs exhibit the best stability performance, due to the enhanced bond energy of the coordination bond in MOFs by the F ligands. This study summarizes the influencing factors of Fe-based MOFs’ damage during PDS activation processes, providing new insights for the future development of Fe-based MOFs.

One-dimensional iron–nickel (Fe–Ni) heterogeneous nanowires with superior electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption were successfully prepared by a magnetic-field-assisted liquid-phase reduction method. The electromagnetic properties of the absorber were controllably tuned by changing the atomic molar ratio of Fe to Ni. The composite with an Fe:Ni atomic molar ratio of 1:1.5 exhibited the finest EMW absorption characteristics. With a matched thickness of 2.175 mm, the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) at 18 GHz can be as high as 26.106 dB. Also, the majority of the Ku-band is covered by the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL ≤ −10 dB), which is up to 6.08 GHz at 2.6 mm with a filler content of 25%. The excellent absorber performance is due to one’s own rich heterogeneous interface to conciliate the dielectric and magnetic losses. The successful exploration of the one-dimensional heterogeneous structure EMW absorber provides important insights for the future sensible fabrication of absorbers with excellent EMW absorption capability.

A novel iron-pyridine-based chelate Fe-PYPA was synthesized via a facile and green strategy. The chelate served as a highly efficient catalyst toward CO 2 cycloaddition . A 95.7% PO conversion and a 98.4% PC selectivity were achieved under moderate conditions. Even under solvent-free conditions, Fe-PYPA could achieve a 93.6% conversion and 98.2% selectivity, acting as a robust and efficient catalyst toward CO 2 cycloaddition. Moreover, the as-prepared catalyst showed desirable catalytic activity , good recyclability , remarkable thermo-stability and ideal compatibility to a variety of epoxy substrates. In-situ ATR-IR spectroscopy was used as a powerful tool to gain process understanding for the whole conversion from CO 2 to cyclic carbonate under atmospheric pressure in the presence of TBAI. The process of PO’s ring opening, activation and insertion of CO 2 and the formation of cyclic carbonate were illuminated explicitly through the change of characteristic absorption peaks, providing direct and visual evidence for the mechanism proposed. The present work paves a new way for theoretical and experimental explorations on novel catalyst design and process understanding for highly-efficient greenhouse gas re-utilization.

In order to deal with the deficiency of active sites in Ni catalyst, Ni Fe nanosheet (Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 -NS) catalyst was synthesized by using Ni-Fe-Al LDH as the precursor. The catalyst was further utilized in the lipid hydrotreatment for green diesel production. With a lamellar structure and large Ni loading (more than 60%), the Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 -NS catalyst possessed abundant Ni sties with high dispersion, large surface area, and strong acidity. Moreover, in Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 -NS the highly active Ni 3 Fe phase was formed, which promoted the decarbonylation route in hydrotreatment. The Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 -NS catalyst achieved 98.7% conversion with 98.1% alkane yield in oleic acid hydrotreatment under very mild conditions (220 °C, 2 MPa of hydrogen pressure, 3 h). The catalytic performance of Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 -NS was much higher than traditional Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 and other catalysts reported in current related studies.
