CO2-triggered multiresponsive polymers for efficient gas channeling control: Conformational changes and dynamic network synergy

Wei Xiang,Jia Chen,Yunbo Dong,Yue Wen,Zizhao Wang,Lin Li,Caili Dai

Multilevel CO 2 -responsive polymers with exceptional thickening performance. • SC-CO 2 triggered cationic transformation and high-temperature ion pair formation. • Synergistic coupling mechanism of chain conformational changes and dynamic networks. • SC-CO 2 induced an 8.3-fold viscosity increase of 0.5 wt% PAAHD within 10 min. • PAAHD demonstrated exceptional CO 2 -blocking efficacy, EOR was 18.56%. Existing CO 2 channeling-control strategies that rely on a single protonation-triggered mechanism to regulate polymer conformation through hydrophilic-hydrophobic microdomain evolution are often severely constrained under harsh reservoir. Therefore, breaking away from the conventional single-response paradigm, this study synthesizes a multilevel CO 2 -responsive polymer, PAAHD. In a supercritical CO 2 (SC-CO 2 ) conditions, the viscosity of a 0.5 wt% PAAHD solution sharply increased from 68.31 ± 2.10 mPa·s to 665.37 ± 18.40 mPa·s within 10 min. Even under a high mineralization of 10 × 10 4  mg/L, the system maintained a viscosity of 254.66 ± 7.60 mPa·s, far exceeding the previously reported value of 55.40 mPa·s. This significant viscosity enhancement originates from the synergistic construction of a protonation-induced dense hydrogen bonding network (with hydrogen bonding content increasing from 16.65% to 54.08%) and an ionic crosslinking physical network. Specifically, the reversal of Zeta potential from −10 mV to +24 mV, accompanied by an order-of-magnitude increase in electrical conductivity, indicates the transition of polymer chains to a positively charged state and a significant increase in ionic crosslinking density. This pronounced gelation transition is reflected in core displacement experiments as a 32-fold increase in injection pressure and an 18.56 ± 1.20% enhancement in oil recovery. This dual-mechanism synergistic responsive strategy provides an innovative solution for intelligent profile control. Download: Download high-res image (350KB) Download: Download full-size image

High-Capacity and Rapid Radioiodine Capture from Gas and Water by Triazine-Functionalized Collagen Fibers

Chen Meijun,Lin Li,Du Defu,Liu Yanru,Yan Jiabing,Li Hongxin,Gu Haibin

Effective elimination of radioactive iodine species from nuclear waste is critical for ecological protection, human health safety, and the sustainable development of nuclear energy. Herein, a collagen fiber-based iodine adsorbent (ACFT) was fabricated via glutaraldehyde-mediated triazine functionalization. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of intrinsic collagen functional groups and introduced nitrogen-rich triazine sites, ACFT achieved excellent adsorption toward iodine (I 2 ) and triiodide (I 3 – ). The maximum I 2 adsorption capacity reached 2.977 g/g, and over 95% of I 3 – was rapidly removed within 10 min at 60 ° C and pH = 8. The adsorption mechanism mainly relies on charge transfer coordination between triazine nitrogen and iodine species, together with hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions of collagen groups. With favorable stability and regenerability, the biobased ACFT, as a sustainable, high-efficiency adsorbent, presents great potential for practical radioactive iodine remediation in nuclear wastewater and airborne iodine treatment.

Synergistic reduction and adsorption strategies for the efficient recovery of iodine from shale gas wastewater

Zhengquan Gui,Shengchi Bai,Guijing Chen,Jialang Li,Xiaoqi Wang,Chaoyang Li,Baicang Liu

A coupled redox-adsorption-desorption-precipitation process successfully recovered iodine from SGW concentrate. • After sixth adsorption cycles, the removal rate of iodine bu. PAC exceeded 79%. • Iodine with a purity of over 90% was recovered from the SGW concentrate. • The cost of treating one ton of water is only about 1 RMB, which offers significant economic value. The concentrated shale gas wastewater (SGW) contains high concentrations of iodine, presenting challenges for efficient recovery. This work reports the successful recovery of iodine from SGW concentrate using a combination of redox, adsorption, desorption, and precipitation processes. The process starts with ozone (O 3 ) pre-oxidation, converting iodide ions (I − ) into iodate ions (IO 3 − ). After comparing the performance of the six reducing agents, it was found that a 90% removal rate of iodine in the SGW concentrate could be achieved by first carrying out a ferrous ion reduction reaction, followed by adsorption using powdered activated carbon (PAC) for one day. Upon a series of process optimizations, an 83.8% removal rate of iodine from the SGW concentrate was achieved when 0.19 g/L ferrous sulfate and 0.35 g/L PAC were present simultaneously for 20 min. This results from the synergistic action of ferrous ions reduced by I − while PAC rapidly adsorbing I 2 . The PAC adsorption capacity remained at 71.1 mg/g, with an iodine removal rate exceeding 79.1% and a desorption rate of 89.5%, after six adsorption and desorption cycles. Lastly, by subjecting the PAC desorption solution to alkali washing and oxidation, the I 2 was successfully recovered with a purity of 99%. This integrated approach offers a promising strategy for the purification and recovery of iodine resource from SGW concentrate. Molecularly integrated polymer–MOF interfaces enable directional gas transport in oriented nanosheet mixed-matrix membranes

Lei Wang,Yizheng Tao,Benxin Li,Jin Huang,Jingxian Hua,Yichang Pan

Constructing mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) in which porous fillers effectively contribute to gas transport remains challenging, especially in highly permeable polymer matrices where gas diffusion is often dominated by the polymer phase or non-selective interface. Here we show interfacially integrated oriented MMMs based on homologous microporous polymer-grafted ZIF-8 nanosheets for CO 2 /CH 4 separation. Acyl chloride-functionalized PIM-1 was covalently grafted onto amino-functionalized ultrathin ZIF-8 nanosheets. This interlayer improves the compatibility between ZIF-8 nanosheets and the PIM-1 matrix while preserving the accessible nanopores of ZIF-8, enabling uniform nanosheet dispersion and preferential in-plane alignment during membrane fabrication. Structural characterizations and molecular simulations reveal an integrated filler–interlayer–matrix structure involving covalent bonding and polymer-chain inter-penetration, which suppresses non-selective gas transport and allows the oriented ZIF-8 nanosheets to contribute more effectively to diffusion-based molecular sieving. The optimized membrane with 40 wt% grafted nanosheets exhibits a CO 2 permeability of 5890 Barrer and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 26.8 under mixed-gas conditions. Furthermore, the interpenetrated PIM interface improves aging resistance, allowing the membrane to retain 79.7% of its initial CO 2 permeability after 120 days. This work offers a practical interfacial engineering strategy for constructing high-loading oriented MOF nanosheet MMMs with enhanced selectivity and long-term stability.

A curved gas-liquid counter-current flow tube-in-tube microreactor for efficient CO2 absorption

Debiao Pan,Caijin Zhou,Xiaoda Wang,Xuehui Ge

Achieved efficient CO 2 absorption in curved TiTR under counter-current flow. • Overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient up to 0.97 s −1 . • Enhancement factor of gas-liquid mass transfer reached 1.35. • Trade-off between mass transfer enhancement and energy consumption evaluated. • Empirical correlation for mass transfer coefficient with 15% error. In recent years, the substantial emission of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) has caused increasingly severe environmental issues. In response, policies related to carbon neutrality and carbon emission reduction have been rolled out. To achieve these goals, the efficient capture of CO 2 is essential. This work systematically elucidated the gas-liquid two-phase counter-current mass transfer mechanism for an efficient CO 2 absorption process using a curved tube-in-tube reactor (TiTR), which has a wide gas-liquid contact area and a new reactor structure. The variation of CO 2 absorption efficiency and the overall gas-liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient ( k L a ) under different experimental conditions, including curvature diameter, pitch, and liquid flow rate, was systematically examined. Through the optimization of experimental conditions, the enhancement factor of k L a , which was defined as the ratio of k L a of the curved TiTR to that of the straight TiTR, reached 1.35, and k L a was up to 0.97 s −1 . In addition, the trade-off between mass transfer enhancement and energy consumption in the CO 2 absorption enhancement process within TiTRs with different geometries was evaluated. Finally, on the basis of the experimental data, an empirical equation correlating k L a with experimental parameters was further proposed. This equation can be used to predict the gas-liquid mass transfer in TiTRs.

Triphasic sequential gas delivery via a photo-instructive hydrogel for enhanced diabetic skin wound healing

Jingwen Dong,Junjie Zhou,Shuguang Huang,Junmei Mu,Ye Tian,Zhifei Ding,Yihui Li,Aiping Wang,Zhanwei Zhou,Zeyu Xu,Minjie Sun

Near infrared light-triggered three-dimensional adaptive release in depth, time and dose for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. • A triphasic sequential NO release hydrogel achieves antibacterial, angiogenic and remodeling effects. • Triphasic sequential strategy for adapting NO dosage enhances the NO metabolic microenvironment at the wound condition, ultimately expediting wound healing. Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) requires spatiotemporal coordinated modulation of the inflammatory response and tissue regeneration process, which is still the bottleneck. Here, a triphasic-sequential hydrogel was explored to tackle the infection treatment and tissue regeneration in DFU. The PDA@B6/L-Arg hydrogel was loaded with near infrared-responsive polydopamine nanoparticles, carrying the nitric oxide (NO) donors for different healing stages. Upon exposure to laser irradiation, 1) the PDA@B6/L-Arg hydrogel rapidly released a substantial amount of nitric oxide (NO) (μM) from N , N ′-di-sec-butyl-N,N′-dinitroso-1,4-phenylenediamine (BNN6), thereby synergistically achieving effective anti-bactericidal and anti-inflammatory effects; 2) L-Arg, as the substrate for nitric oxide synthases NOS, provided the support for deep angiogenesis; 3) the hydrogel degraded, allowing the released L-Arg to penetrate the wound and promote additional extracellular matrix remodeling. Compared to non-sequential NO therapy, PDA@B6/L-Arg hydrogel exhibited spatiotemporal modulation, enhancing the biofilm inhibition and angiogenesis. Furthermore, PDA@B6/L-Arg hydrogel, as a reactive oxygen species-scavenging agent, simultaneously attenuating inflammatory to improve the healing efficiency of chronic wounds, achieving 97.9% closure of infected wounds. It offers a promising therapeutic option for managing diabetic foot ulcers.

Ultrasensitive gas sensor based on Gd Modified SnO2 for nitrogen dioxide detection at low temperature

Mathankumar Ganesan,M. Umar Farooq,Jin Li,M. Krishna Mohan,Fei Wang

The current investigation highlights the successful development of a highly selective and ultra-sensitive nitrogen dioxide sensor at room temperature (28 ℃), employing Gd-doped SnO 2 nanostructures. A facile hydrothermal route prepared the pure and Gd-doped SnO 2 nanostructures. The samples were analyzed using XRD, HR-TEM, XPS, and BET analysis to investigate their structural, core-level morphology, chemical composition, and specific surface area properties. The prepared sensors exhibited superior selectivity towards the NO 2 gas molecule compared to other target gases such as H 2 S, CH 4 , NH 3 , SO 2 , acetone, ethanol, and methanol. Remarkably, the Sn-2 (3   mM) sample shows a superior gas-sensing response of about 186 towards the 10 ppm of NO 2 gas molecule at 28 ℃. At 100 ℃, the Sn-2 (3   mM) sample displays a sensing response of about 3726 towards the 10 ppm of NO 2 gas. In addition, the prepared pure and Sn-2 (3   mM) sensors showed good repeatability and stability. The results will give an alternative way to develop the metal oxide-based (MOS) NO 2 gas sensor for real-time gas monitoring applications. Additionally, DFT gas adsorption studies were conducted to better understand the selectivity performance of the pure and Gd-SnO 2 system, and the results showed good consistency with the experimental findings.

Trienzyme-like activities nanoreactor boosts tumor ferroptosis and mild photothermal therapy via gas/starvation synergy

Huan Du,Guiqiang Qi,Minghui Zhao,Junyu Xie,Shouping Dai,Yusong Zhang,Chunhai Gao,Kang Chen,Ran Yan,Geng Yang

Mild photothermal therapy (mPTT) is often hindered by the upregulation of heat shock proteins (HSPs). To address this limitation, we designed a trienzyme-mimicking nanoreactor (MPGH) by functionalizing MnCO-loaded polydopamine (PDA) nanospheres with glucose oxidase (GOx)-doped hyaluronic acid. MPGH integrates the catalytic activities of GOx, peroxidase (POD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX). Specifically, GOx consumes glucose to induce starvation therapy while simultaneously generating H 2 O 2 . The produced H 2 O 2 promotes MnCO decomposition, releasing CO for gas therapy and Mn 2+ to trigger mitochondrial dysfunction and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, thereby exhibiting POD-like activity. Meanwhile, the GPX-like activity of PDA depletes intracellular glutathione (GSH), downregulating glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) to enhance ferroptosis. Importantly, both CO-mediated gas therapy and GOx-mediated starvation therapy disrupt cellular energy metabolism, reducing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels and suppressing HSP expression, which markedly enhances the efficacy of mPTT. This synergistic strategy of disrupting energy homeostasis demonstrated potent therapeutic outcomes against breast cancer.

Locking Metal–Organic Framework Linkers to Mesoporous Nanosheets via π–π Conjugation for Gas Separation

Yongyan Feng,Yihao Xiao,Xinxi Huang,Wanbin Li

Metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes show great potential for efficient molecular separation. However, the framework flexibility from linker rotation causes the fluctuation of windows and changes in sieving properties. In this study, we report locking the linkers of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) membranes to mesoporous graphene oxide nanosheets by strong π–π conjugation for stiffening transport pathways and boosting gas-sieving performance. Comprehensive experiments, characterizations, and density functional theory simulations demonstrate that the π–π interaction exists between the linker rings of ZIFs and the aromatic rings of nanosheets, thereby suppressing linker rotation and inducing window shrinkage. Moreover, because nanosheets offer nucleation sites and nanoconfined growth regions, the ultrathin membranes with different ZIF types can be deposited on both flat and hollow fiber polymeric substrates in scalability. Since π–π stacking inhibits linker rotation and narrows windows, preferential crystallization repairs non-selective voids, and in-plane porosity of nanosheets facilitates mass transfer processes, the linker-locked membranes with a thickness of 50 nm exhibit H2/CO2 selectivity up to 43.7 and H2 permeance of 3120 gas permeation units, exceeding most MOF–polymer membranes. These generally applicable concepts provide effective routes to adjust the pore structure and framework flexibility of MOFs and to design high-performance ultrathin membranes for molecular separations.

Construction and detection application of highly sensitive TEA gas sensors enabled by In2O3/rGO heterostructures

Xin Liu,Leigang Pei,Chenyang Zhang,Zengxian Tang,Tuo Wang,Yi Liu

TEA presents substantial risks to environmental safety and human health. Thus, developing a highly efficient and precise gas sensor for TEA holds considerable practical value. In this study, In 2 O 3 /rGO heterostructures are constructed to investigate its sensing performance toward TEA. Characterization results demonstrate that In 2 O 3 nanocubes are uniformly deposited on the rGO surface, forming a unique heterostructure. The pure In 2 O 3 sensor exhibits a response of 24.04 to 100 ppm TEA gas at 280 °C. By contrast, the In 2 O 3 /rGO-0.5 % sensor has a response as high as 46.15 under the same testing conditions, which is 1.92 times that of pure In 2 O 3 sensor. Moreover, the synergistic effects between rGO and In 2 O 3 endow the heterostructure with superior long-term stability and reproducibility compared to that of pure In 2 O 3 . These results suggest that In 2 O 3 /rGO heterostructures represent potential candidates for next-generation TEA gas sensors.

High-Temperature CO2 Sensor with Second-Level Response for Diesel Engine Exhaust Gas Detection Applications

Zuorong Huang,Quanquan Tang,Jing He,Lei Wu,Fengmin Liu,Xishuang Liang,Bin Wu,Mingliang Fu,Geyu Lu

Diesel engines in the field of transportation are one of the important sources of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and incomplete combustion and complex working conditions make it difficult to accurately calculate their CO2 emissions by using the intake volume. In addition, the high temperature and harsh environment of exhaust gas also put higher requirements on the response speed, stability, and high-temperature resistance of the sensor. In this study, Co3O4 was doped into the auxiliary phase Na2CO3 as a catalyst and stabilizer to improve the sensor sensitivity, and solid electrolyte NASICON was doped to improve the sensor response speed. The results show that when the doping ratio of Na2CO3 and NASICON is the same as 10 wt %, the response to CO2 of 5000 ppm can reach −67 mV, and the full-range second-level response to CO2 is realized. The detection range is up to 0–180,000 ppm, the sensitivity is −64 mV/decade, the sensor has good selectivity to CO2, the response change in the range of 20–98% RH is negligible, and the response change in 60 days is only −8.66%. This sensor had good reproducibility. In addition, the in situ on-board CO2 sensing probe and test system were developed. The sensor response was calibrated against the measurement values of standard instruments on the entire vehicle. Based on the calibration results, a regression curve was established and the vehicle was tested; the test results and the standard instrument test value deviation are basically less than 10% to verify the practicality of the component in the exhaust gas detection.

Forensic analysis of tetrahydrothiophene (THT) at gas explosion scenes: Adsorption-desorption dynamics on common substrates

Dong Han,Guan-Nan Zhang,Zhen-Wen Sun,Yao Liu

Tetrahydrothiophene (THT) is a common odorant in natural gas and plays a crucial role as key chemical evidence in post-explosion investigations. However, there has been limited research on the detection of THT in samples collected from gas explosion scenes. Headspace-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) was employed to systematically investigate the adsorption and desorption behavior of THT on three common substrates: soil, sponge, and fabric. The results indicate that the physical and chemical properties of the substrate significantly influence the retention of THT. Polyurethane sponge and flax fiber exhibit the highest adsorption capacity, attributed to their larger specific surface area and porous structure. With soil as the representative substrate, humidity significantly reduces physical adsorption efficiency. Desorption kinetics exhibit significant temperature dependence: THT is released markedly faster as temperature rises, whereas storage under low-temperature conditions substantially prolongs its persistence on the substrate. The limit of detection (LOD) of the proposed method is 0.05   ng/g in soil, thus affording sufficient sensitivity for ultra-trace analysis. These findings provide a critical scientific basis for on-site evidence collection (prioritizing dry, porous materials), optimizing evidence preservation (immediate low-temperature storage), and enhancing the accuracy of forensic evidence interpretation in gas explosion cases.
