Mechanistic Insights into a Co(II)-Coordinated “Free” Metal Site of 2D Zinc-Based MOFs for β-Alkylation of Secondary Alcohols with Primary Alcohols

Weizuo Li,Rui Fu,Jing Shi,Zhenhao Xiao,Yue Xu,Dafang He,Guangyu He,Haiqun Chen,Mingchen Xie

Through in-depth study of the properties and reaction mechanisms of catalysts, it is possible to better optimize catalytic systems and improve reaction efficiency and selectivity. This remains one of the challenges in the field of catalysis. Therefore, the research and design of catalysts play crucial roles in understanding and optimizing catalytic reaction mechanisms. A robust 2D zinc-based MOFs (Zn-HA) supported Co(II) ion catalyst (Zn-HA@Co) has been designed and synthesized via a coordination-assisted strategy for β-alkylation of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols. The characterization demonstrated that the anchoring of Co(II) on Zn-HA via coordination could efficiently enhance the Co(II) ion dispersity and interaction between Co(II) and Zn-HA MOFs. Importantly, the density functional theory results have provided mechanistic insights into the energy of the HOMO and LUMO of the Zn-HA@Co catalyst as well as the energy change of the entire process after interacting with the reactants and the specific energy changes of each orbital. The synthesized Zn-HA@Co MOFs effectively lower the energy barrier of the catalytic reaction process. We expect that our research and design of catalysts will serve as valuable guideline for understanding and optimizing catalytic reaction mechanisms.

A novel catechin electrochemical sensor based on a two-dimensional MOFs material derivative Zn doped carbon nanosheets and multi-walled carbon nanotubes composite film

Yang Hu,Chenxi Wang,Pengcheng Zhao,Li Zhang,Junjie Fei,Yixi Xie

In this paper, the precursor ZIF-8/NaCl composite material was successfully synthesized by the in-situ synthesis method, and the two-dimensional zinc doped carbon nanosheets (Zn CNs) were obtained after heat treatment of the precursor. Zn CNs were electrodeposited on carboxylated carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) modified glass carbon electrode (GCE) to construct an electrochemical sensor for catechins. The materials are characterized using scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm. Zn CNs/MWCNTs-COOH composite provide the sensor with excellent electrochemical and electrocatalytic performance. Therefore, the sensor has a wide detection range (30.0–738 nM) and a low detection limit (LOD = 10.0 nM) for catechins. The effectiveness of the sensor was also verified in actual sample detection with good stability and accuracy. This study may provide a feasible solution for the detection of catechin.

Control of carboxyl group content in the organic ligands of Co-based MOFs to enhance glucose electrocatalytic oxidation: Towards fuel cell and sensor applications

Anchao Li,Jian Peng,Yijia Li,Houyuan Lao,Caifeng Xie,Fangxue Hang,Kai Li

A catalyst for both a DGFC and a NEGS was prepared. • The direct glucose fuel cell achieves a peak power output of 443.62 μW. • The sensor detection limit is as low as 0.17 μM. • Ligand carboxyl group significantly affects the performance of the catalyst. • Enhancing the GOR performance of Co-based MOFs. The glucose oxidation reaction is the primary reaction occurring at the anode of glucose fuel cells and sensors, and the choice of anode material plays a decisive role in determining their overall performance. This study investigates the influence of the number of carboxyl groups on the aromatic ring of Co-based metal–organic framework (MOF) ligands on the physicochemical properties of the catalyst. The results show that the B2C-1.5 catalyst, with terephthalic acid as the organic ligand and Co as the inorganic metal connector, exhibits the highest ion diffusion rate, peak power, and lowest glucose detection limit, with high crystallinity and large specific surface area. Notably, the direct glucose fuel cells (DGFC) based on this catalyst achieved a peak power of 443.62 μW/cm 2 ; the sensor demonstrated rapid response to glucose oxidation with a detection limit as low as 0.17 μM. Furthermore, this work indicates that within the range where the ligand coordination environment becomes increasingly complex, the increase in the carboxyl content on the aromatic ring leads to a decrease in the orderliness of the crystal structure, an uneven morphology, a decrease in charge transfer and ion diffusion efficiency, a reduction in the content of Co 3+ active centers and ECSA, resulting in a gradual decline in catalytic performance. These findings provide valuable insights for the rational selection of ligands in the design and development of advanced MOF-based glucose oxidation catalysts. Self-assembled drug-loading platform of copper-based MOFs composite particles: Synergistic enhancement of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma suppression via cuproptosis and microtubule arrest

Yanghao Hu,Jiali He,Pengfei Liu,Yanqi Huang,Da Li,Junlei Liu,Zihao Xia,Hongshuai Liu,Wenying Li,Zhisen Shen

The integration of novel regulatory pathways for cell death with conventional chemotherapy provides a new approach for cancer treatment. Therefore, we constructed a self-assembled nano drug platform (CuT@DOC) by combining a copper-based metal-organic framework (CuT) and docetaxel (DOC), aiming to synergistically enhance the inhibitory effect on laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). The CuT@DOC has been confirmed to have a unique “sphere-sheet” hybrid morphology, high stability, and efficient drug loading through a series of structural characterizations. In addition, the CuT@DOC catalyze strong ROS generation and glutathione depletion under tumor-mimicking acidic and H₂O₂-rich environments. Therefore, the CuT@DOC significantly enhanced oxidative stress via continuous Cu²⁺/Cu⁺ cycling, amplifying ROS accumulation and triggering cuproptosis. Concurrently, DOC preserved its microtubule-targeting function, inducing pronounced G2/M arrest. The integration of these mechanisms led to synergistic cytotoxicity against LSCC cells, with markedly reduced toxicity in normal fibroblasts and epithelial cells. The CuT@DOC also exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy and selectivity, underscoring the advantage of combining chemotherapy with copper-dependent cell death in a single nanoplatform. This work proposes CuT@DOC as a robust and biocompatible nanoplatform that leverages dual mechanisms cuproptosis and microtubule disruption to achieve potent and selective tumor inhibition. This study will provide experimental and theoretical support for multimodal nanotherapeutic strategies, offering a promising direction for the precision treatment of LSCC and potentially broader head and neck malignancies.

Unlocking the dual functions of MOFs: Phosphorus-doped carbon nitride modified Bi-MOF-derived bismuth oxide for photocatalytic cleavage of lignin Cα–Cβ bonds

Meng Liu,Jianhao Qiu,Guanglu Xia,Lu Zhang,Chen Chen,Qian Liu,Jianfeng Yao

Efficient and selective cleavage of C–C bonds in lignin remains a critical hurdle for its sustainable valorization into aromatic chemicals. Herein, we rationally construct a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst by integrating phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitride (P-CN) with rod-like Bi 2 O 3 derived from a bismuth metal–organic framework (Bi-MOF). Phosphorus doping effectively modulates the band structure of g-C 3 N 4 , broadening visible-light absorption and enhancing its reduction capacity. Notably, Bi-MOF serves a dual function: it acts as the precursor for rod-like Bi 2 O 3 while simultaneously functioning as a pore-generating agent. Its decomposition during thermal treatment imparts substantial mesoporosity to the overlying g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets, dramatically increasing the specific surface area of the heterojunction. This mesoporous architecture and high surface area facilitate lignin diffusion and oxygen capture, thereby promoting the generation of carbon-centered radical intermediates and singlet oxygen—the key reactive species driving lignin C α –C β bond cleavage. Consequently, the optimized P-CN/Bi 2 O 3 catalyst achieves 97.5% conversion of the lignin model compound, 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol, and 94.3% benzaldehyde yield under 405 nm light irradiation, drastically outperforming pristine Bi 2 O 3 (31.4% conversion, 30.5% yield) and P-CN (55.8% conversion, 50.9% yield). This work highlights the untapped potential of MOF-derived materials in morphological engineering, offering new design principles for high-performance photocatalytic systems toward sustainable lignin valorization.

Synthesis and Properties of Energetic MOFs Based on Bis(3-Nitro-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-yl) Amine: Advancing High Thermal Stability and Low Sensitivity

Shiluo Chen,Jinxin Wang,Yuteng Cao,Kangcai Wang,Haijun Yang,Tianlin Liu

Energetic metal–organic frameworks (E-MOFs) have recently emerged as a promising strategy to address the long-standing challenge of reconciling energy and sensitivity in energetic materials. Nitrogen-rich compounds, with their abundant nitrogen atoms and superior enthalpy of formation, are particularly beneficial for forming multiple coordination bonds while simultaneously elevating the energy content. This makes them ideal ligand molecules for constructing E-MOFs. In this work, we report the synthesis and structural design of a novel series of E-MOFs, constructed from the nitrogen-rich energetic ligand BNTA and a range of alkali metals (Na–Rb, compounds2–5). The research indicates that the synthesized E-MOFs exhibit high thermal stability and low sensitivity. Specifically, Compound3displays a high decomposition temperature of 285 °C, with impact sensitivity and friction sensitivity values exceeding 40 J and 360 N, respectively. Moreover, Compound3also exhibits excellent computational detonation performance. Significantly, this study demonstrates how the aromatic character, coordination chemistry, and intermolecular interactions work synergistically to enhance the stability and safety of E-MOFs, thereby establishing fundamental criteria for engineering the next generation of energetic frameworks.

Dicyandiamide-assisted synthesis of N-doped porous CoMn–Nx@N–C carbon nanotube composites via MOFs as efficient trifunctional electrocatalysts in the same electrolyte

Shiang Li,Chao Feng,Yuehong Xie,Changyan Guo,Afaq Hassan,Jide Wang

The development of low-cost, long-term stability, and good oxygen reversible catalytic reaction (ORR/OER) and hydrogen evolution (HER) activity under the same electrolyte concentration of electrocatalytic materials has an important role in the construction of large-scale applications and more valuable sustainable energy systems. Among them, the representative CoMn–Nx@N–C-900-0.2 showed good ORR/OER/HER catalytic activity in 0.1 M KOH alkaline electrolyte, specifically manifested by its half-wave potential E = 0.84 V in the ORR test, which was better than that of commercial Pt/C. The total oxygen electrode activity index of OER/ORR was E = 0.79 V, and it also showed good HER performance. When the current density was 10 mA cm−2, the operating potential was E = −0.266 V. The synergistic effects of the CoMn bimetallic alloy, tubular layered porous structure, which exposed more active area and various nitrogen species such as CoMn–Nx, were the main reasons for the improvement of the trifunctional catalytic performance of electrocatalytic materials. The synthesis strategy and analysis of the electrocatalyst performance provide a new reference for the development of multifunctional materials with high catalytic performance.

Oxygen defect–rich binary Co–Mn oxides derived from MOFs with hexanuclear SBUs synthesized based on a mechanochemistry approach for total oxidation of propane

Chuanqiang Li,Xiang Liu,Tao Peng,Tong Zhang,Chuanchuan Lin,Yangyang Zhang,Qianqian Chai,Wenge Qiu,Liyun Song

A Co/Mn-based metal – organic framework was used as a precursor to synthesize oxygen-rich defects in binary Co – Mn oxides using mechanical-coordination chemistry method. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption–desorption analysis, scanning-electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and transmission-electron microscopy. H 2 -temperature-programmed reduction and O 2 -temperature-programmed desorption analyses were performed to examine the redox properties and mobility of the oxygen species in the catalysts, respectively. The sample obtained from Co/Mn-BTC-2/3 exhibited the highest catalytic activity for the total oxidation of propane, with a T 90 of 255 ℃ at 120 L g −1 h −1 . The considerable performance of the sample is associated with its smaller grain size , larger specific surface area, and abundant interface and oxygen defects. This study offers a simple strategy for the synthesis of Co/Mn-BTC with hexanuclear SBUs, further deriving to oxygen-deficient and high-performance propane elimination catalysts, which could potentially be applied on an industrial scale.

Boosting the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and NO removal via synergistic effects of in-situ Pt NPs formation and titanium integration in Zr-Porphyrin MOFs

Ruolan Li,Zongqian Wu,Ya Chen,Xingyan Liu,Weiwei Guo,Yumin Huang,Min Fu,Youzhou He

An efficient bifunctional porphyrin-based MOF is fabricated for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and NO removal, in which the mixed Zr/Ti-oxo clusters are the metal nodes and uniformly distributed Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) are the co-catalysts. It is worth noting that the optimal Zr-MOF-s(Pt)(Zr/Ti)-R is obtained through replacing partial Zr(IV) with Ti(IV) in the original Zr-based porphyrin MOFs and in-situ generating confined Pt NPs with a relatively small size within the internal cavities. Compared with the majority of reported Zr-based porphyrin MOFs, the Zr-MOF-s(Pt)(Zr/Ti)-R exhibits an extremely high hydrogen evolution activity (2545.11 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) and NO removal rate (46.6 %) under visible light irradiation. The excellent photocatalytic performance should be ascribed to the reason that the mixed Zr/Ti-oxo cluster and the in-situ generated Pt NPs significantly promote the rate of charge transfer and separation. Moreover, the photocatalytic NO oxidation process was also monitored by in - situ DRIFTS, which indicates the Zr-MOF-s(Pt)(Zr/Ti)-R could realize the effective oxidation of NO and intermediates to the final product (NO 3 – ). This work provides us with a practical route to further improve the photocatalytic performance by synergistically modifying the original metal clusters to adjust the ligand-to-metal charge transfer efficiency and in-situ introducing metal nanoparticles to form Schottky junctions.

Anti-corrosion and anti-fouling properties of ball-like GQDs hybrided MOFs functionalized with silane in waterborne epoxy-polydimethylsiloxane coatings: Experimental and theoretical studies

Ziyang Zhou,Abdolvahab Seif,Sepideh Pourhashem,Jizhou Duan,Alimorad Rashidi,Majid Mirzaee,Pier Luigi Silvestrelli,Baorong Hou

In this research, two strategies including epoxy matrix modification with 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane (APTES) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as well as loading APTES-modified hybrids of graphene quantum dots and metal-organic framework (F-GQDs@MOF) are used to gain a composite epoxy coating with advance resistance against corrosion and fouling on Q235 steel structures. The X-ray analysis of diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and morphology monitoring by transmission electron microscopy indicate that the GQDs are inserted inside the MOF structure through the in situ reaction, and the hybrid is successfully functionalized with the silane alkoxides. The EP-PDMS/F-GQDs@MOF composite coating shows high water contact angle (more than 100°), low surface roughness, high adhesion strength (8.5 MPa which is 2 times more than the EP-PDMS), superior electrochemical resistance (more than 10 8 Ω.cm 2 which is comparable with EP-PDMS sample with 10 6 Ω.cm 2 impedance modulus after immersion in the NaCl solution for 60 days), and negligible corrosion products and blisters after salt spray test. Moreover, the achieved data by the density functional theory (DFT) method show that the functionalization of the GQDs affects remarkably the strengthening of the interface between this moiety and the MOF in such a way to retard the electrochemical reactions. Besides, the results of immersion in Qingdao port reveal that negligible amounts of marine organisms have covered the surface of the EP-PDMS/F-GQDs@MOF sample, while Styela clava and Botrylloides sp. are attached on the EP-PDMS surface. The antibacterial activity of the EP-PDMS/F-GQDs@MOF against Pseudomonas sp. is proved by low attached bacteria on its surface.

Multifunctional stable PDA/RGO/MOFs&SiO2-COOH membrane with excellent flux and anti-fouling performance for the separation of organic dye and oil/water

Yucheng Liu,Zhi Huang,Wei He,Mingyan Chen,Wenwen Tu,Meng Zhu,Dong Gan,Shumeng Liu

ABSTRACT In this work, bimetallic MIL53(Fe-Co) nanorod was modified by SiO 2 -COOH nanoparticles to obtain a novel MOF with low aggregation, and then intercalated into the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) layer crosslinked by polydopamine (PDA) to form a super-hydrophilic membrane with selective adsorption. The composite material was characterized by various analytical techniques. Owing to the low agglomeration of bimetallic MIL53(Fe-Co) and improved layer spacing of RGO , the stable composite membrane exhibited a water contact angle of approximate 0°, with the dye solution flux of 1721.46 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 for methylene blue (MB) and 1834.88 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 for malachite green (MG), the dye solution flux was increased by 31 and 33 times compared with M0, respectively. Meanwhile, the rejection rates of MB and MG were 99.46% and 99.4% with an excellent tolerance to a wide range of pH. Furthermore, the composite membrane shows a huge adsorption capacity in treating dye solution with high concentration and large volume for reusability due to the improvement of hydrophilicity. It also performed excellently in the field of separating oil/water emulsion with the flux of 539.79 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 and rejection of 98.12%. In conclusion, the composite membrane with extraordinary hydrophilicity, strong adsorption capacity, and superior anti-fouling performance with low costs endows possibility of massive manufacture in commercial production for wastewater separation and purifications.
