Cholesterol is an important lipid compound found in a variety of foods, and its level in human blood is closely related to human health. Therefore, development of rapid and accurate POCT (point-of-care testing) methods for cholesterol detection is crucial for assessing food quality and early diagnosis of diseases, in particular, in a resource-limited environment. In this study, a smartphone-assisted colorimetric biosensor is constructed based on platinum,phosphorus-codoped carbon nitride (PtCNP 2 ) for the rapid detection of cholesterol. Phosphorus-doped carbon nitride is prepared by thermal annealing of urea and NH 4 PF 6 , into which platinum is atomically dispersed by thermal refluxing. The obtained PtCNP 2 exhibits an excellent peroxidase-like activity under physiological pH, whereby colorless o -phenylenediamine (OPD) is oxidized to colored 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), which can be produced during the oxidation of cholesterol by cholesterol oxidase. A smartphone-assisted visual sensing system is then constructed based on the color recognition software, and rapid on-site detection of cholesterol is achieved by reading the RGB values. Meanwhile, the generated DAP shows an apparent fluorescence signal and can realize highly sensitive detection of cholesterol by the change of the fluorescence signal intensity. Such a cholesterol sensor exhibits a wide linear detection range of 0.5–600 μg mL −1 and a low detection limit of 59 ng mL −1 . The practicality of the sensor is successfully demonstrated in the rapid detection of cholesterol in serum and food.

This work explores the potential of porphyrin-grafted lignin nanoparticles (TCPP- g -AL-NPs) as a novel, effective, and biocompatible photosensitizer for antibacterial applications. Lignin acted as a sustainable framework, enhancing water-compatibility and single oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) generation of porphyrin. The mechanism study revealed the successful formation of a p-n heterojunction between lignin and porphyrin, which promoted the charge separation and the photocatalytic process of O 2 to 1 O 2 . In vitro antibacterial assessments demonstrated the efficacy of TCPP- g -AL-NPs in eradicating both Gram-negative ( E. coli ) and Gram-positive ( S. aureus ) bacteria under blue LED light irradiation. The observed lower antibacterial effectiveness against E. coli compared to S. aureus could be attributed to the thicker cell membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. Additionally, TCPP- g -AL-NPs exhibited no cytotoxicity towards mouse fibroblast cells (L929). This study presents a straightforward and promising approach for developing lignin-based photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy.

Poly (p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) nanofiber films are promising candidates for next-generation electronics due to their superior thermal stability, mechanical strength, and heat dissipation capability. However, fabricating high-quality PBO nanofiber film remains challenging due to its inherent poor solubility and infusibility. Current sol–gel methods for fabricating PBO nanofiber films suffer from the tedious operation, environmental risk, and potential structural defects, thereby limiting their performance and applications. A hierarchical assembly strategy is demonstrated to optimize the fabrication and aggregation structure of PBO nanofiber films through proton-acceptor solvents such as H 2 O. By controlling nanofiber aggregation and enhancing molecular alignment via external force-assisted crystallization, high-performance PBO nanofiber films are achieved with exceptional properties: great in-plane thermal conductivity (25.85 W·m −1 ·K −1 ), outstanding tensile strength (189.98 MPa), and remarkable thermal stability (T 5% ≈ 517 °C). Remarkably, assembling PBO nanofibers (PBONFs) in high concentration into PBO wet films takes just a few minutes, drastically enhancing preparation efficiency. When applied as flexible printed circuit board substrates, PBO nanofiber films effectively homogenize temperature fields, suppressing local hotspots and reducing surface temperatures by 16.7 °C. This strategy offers a scalable solution for manufacturing high-performance PBO nanofiber films, demonstrating significant potential for advanced thermal management in next-generation electronics.

The industrial implementation of hydrate-based natural gas storage and transportation faces significant challenges due to sluggish hydrate formation kinetics. This study systematically explored the use of sodium p-styrenesulfonate (SS) as a promoter for methane hydrate formation, with comprehensive investigations into its promotion efficiency, underlying mechanisms, foamability, and recyclability. Results indicated that SS at an appropriate concentration (5-12 mmol L -1 ) presented a remarkable performance on promoting methane hydrate formation kinetics, and with increasing concentration, the promotion efficiency was initially enhanced and then slightly declined, and the shortest induction time of 0 min was achieved at 7 mmol L -1 , while the rapidest hydrate growth rate at t 90 (HGR t90 ) of 0.575 ± 0.022 mmol mL -1 min -1 , the largest methane uptake of 149.8 ± 0.8 mmol mol -1 and the highest storage capacity of 148.5 ± 0.8 v/v were achieved at 10 mmol L -1 . Morphological observation on hydrate formation process revealed that SS might induce the development of porous hydrate structures. These structures generated substantial capillary forces on the underlying water, promoting upward hydrate growth and significantly enhancing mass transfer. Hydrate formation from droplet implied that SS at a higher concentration might provide stronger capillary forces on water, thereby more significantly boosting mass transfer. Morphological observation on hydrate dissociation process revealed that SS did not generate foam, and moreover, SS maintained remarkable promoting effects throughout at least five repeated hydrate formation-dissociation cycles, which convincingly proved that SS permitted exceptional non-foamability and admirable recyclability.

High reactivity between single-crystalline high-nickel LiNi x Co y Mn 1-x-y O 2 cathode materials (Ni-rich SC-NCM) and the electrolyte is considered to be the main cause of fast capacity decay. To prevent direct their direct contact, we utilized a wet coating process to uniformly coat the surface of SC-NCM811 with a layer of brominated phosphoric acid tri-p-cresyl ester (Br-TCP) approximately 6 nm in thickness. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of a cycled SC-NCM811 electrode indicates that the Br-TCP coating layer not only plays a key role in reducing interfacial side reactions, but also generates LiBr, a Li-ion conductor, due to reactions with surface lithium sources. The presence of LiBr in the coating layer enhances the lithium-ion dynamics and reduces the impact of coating layer on the lithium-ion diffusion within SC-NCM811. Additionally, the strong ionic bonds of LiBr enable enhanced adhesion between Br-TCP coating layer and SC-NCM811, thereby achieving lasting protection effect. Consequently, the synergistic effects provided by the Br-TCP modification layer are beneficial to delivering excellent electrochemical performance. Specifically, the capacity retention ratio is improved from 8.95 % to 55.28 % over 400 cycles at 1 C. We believe the strategy developed herein can provide valuable guidance in designing advanced surface modified cathodes for high-performance lithium (-ion) batteries.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as a well-known carbon-based material, exhibit multiple morphologies due to their controllable structure units. In this study, we proposed a molecular engineering approach utilizing the methoxy group to adjust the p -π resonance and synthesized two distinct covalent organic frameworks (COFs), designated as TATP (without methoxy) and TADM (with methoxy). These COFs exhibit significant morphological and structural disparities; TATP adopts a spherical morphology, whereas TADM forms layered structures with a high aspect ratio. The incorporation of TADM led to an excellent reduction in wear rates by 78.93 % compared to TATP (37.31 %). The exceptional interfacial lubrication performance of TADM is attributable to not only the successfully manipulated high-oriented layer structure through p -π resonance but also the formation of Fe–N bonds between the electron-rich nitrogen atoms in TADM and the electron-deficient iron atoms during the friction process.

GeP 3 is a promising anode material for sodium ion battery due to better conductivity, relatively high theoretical capacity and improved mechanical endurance compared to phosphorus and other phosphides. However unsatisfied rate capability and cycling stability is still an annoying issue that hinders the application of GeP 3 . Here, GeP 3 was hybridized with P doped carbon (PPC) derived from low-cost coal tar pitch to prepare composite electrode. Through ball-milling process, the GeP 3 and PPC was homogenously mixed and form fused, secondary particles as confirmed by electron microscope. The formation of P-C and P-O-C bond between GeP 3 and carbon matrix was evidenced by XPS, and prompted by P doping level and O content in PPC. The electrochemical performance of the composite electrodes was evaluated, demonstrated much enhanced properties compared to bare GeP 3 and also GeP 3 /carbon black electrode. High reversible capacity of 781 mAh/g was achieved by GeP 3 /PPC-950 at 0.05 A/g. At higher current density of 2 A/g, the capacity can maintain at 360 mAh/g, 46% of the value that obtained at 0.05 A/g. The correlation between the structure of carbon and battery performance was discussed. The improvement in battery performance can be attributed to suppressed volume expansion and good conductive network of the GeP 3 /PPC composite, which affected by P doping level and O content of PPC.

Two-dimensional transition metal carbide/nitride MXenes have become a hot topic in the field of lithium-ion energy storage due to their unique surface chemistry and excellent electronic conductivity. However, electrodes made of multilayer MXenes suffer from low capacity, poor cycling performance, and slow lithiation kinetics. In this paper, the MoP2@Ti3C2Tx composite was prepared by adsorbing Mo cations on the surface of Ti3C2Tx followed by phosphatization. The uniformly distributed MoP2 nanostructure effectively increases the layer spacing, enlarges the specific surface area, and improves the structural stability of the material. At the same time, MoP2 and Ti3C2Tx are connected by a P−O bond, which accelerates the diffusion and migration of lithium ions and the charge transfer, and the strong covalent Ti−O−P bond can cause rapid charge transfer and stabilize the structure of the material. The electrochemical activity of MoP2 nanostructures also provides more active sites for lithium ions. The presence of the lamellar structure of Ti3C2Tx also inhibits to some extent the expansion of the transition metal phosphide volume with the cycling process, thus realizing more excellent lithium storage capacity. 1/2 MoP2@Ti3C2Tx material has a high reversible capacity of 165.7 mAh g−1 (172% improvement over the original material) at a current density of 3000 mA g−1. The assembled 1/2 MoP2@Ti3C2Tx//AC Li-ion hybrid capacitor LIC has 85.5% capacity retention after cycling at a current density of 1500 mA g−1. The ability of the assembled full battery to illuminate light-emitting diode (LED) light bulbs further confirms that the electrochemical reliability of the device meets the requirements of real-world applications. The results demonstrate that the strategy of constructing in situ-grown MoP2 nanostructures can effectively improve MXene high-energy-density applications in lithium-ion energy storage.

Carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) photocatalysts face significant challenges in environmental water remediation, including limited visible light absorption, severe charge recombination, and slow charge transfer. To address these limitations, we developed a Z-scheme Ni-C 3 N 4 /P-C 3 N 4 heterojunction using an efficient and environmentally friendly ball milling method. Compared to g-C 3 N 4 , P-C 3 N 4 , and Ni-C 3 N 4 , the Ni-C 3 N 4 /P-C 3 N 4 heterojunction demonstrated significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity, achieving 99.1% and 86.8% degradation of tetracycline (TC) and rhodamine B (RhB) within 60 minutes, respectively. The total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiencies were 78.2% for TC and 71.8% for RhB. This enhanced activity is attributed to the optimized heterojunction components and the tightly coupled heterojunction interface, which improve charge transfer and promote efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. Radical scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis revealed that holes (h⁺), hydroxyl radicals (·OH), and superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) all synergistically contribute to the degradation process, with ·O 2 − being the dominant active species. Additionally, toxicity assessment of the degradation products confirmed the environmental safety of the photocatalytic process. This study provides a promising strategy for photocatalytic water purification and offers valuable insights into the design of heterojunction materials.

Constructing non-precious metal electrocatalysts with good hydrogen evolution activity is crucial for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media. The synergistic optimization of the water dissociation and hydrogen desorption steps presents a challenge for the HER. Here, we have synthesized phosphorus-doped tungsten trioxide with oxygen vacancies (P-WO3-x) using a simple but effective hydrothermal reaction followed by calcination annealing. Interestingly, the P-WO3-x material exhibits unique characteristics that set it apart from conventional tungsten oxide-based electrocatalysts. The introduction of oxygen vacancies and phosphorus doping creates an optimal structure that significantly improves the electronic properties and the catalytic sites. The oxygen vacancies enhance the material’s ability to adsorb and activate water molecules, while phosphorus doping further modifies the electronic structure, facilitating more efficient hydrogen desorption. Meanwhile, the catalyst demonstrates a favorable urchin-like morphology with excellent supportability. Remarkably, the P-WO3-x electrocatalyst demonstrates excellent HER performance and excellent durability. We indicate that P-WO3-x exhibits a small overpotential (155.42 mV at -10 mA cm-2), a low Tafel slope (74.97 mV dec-1), and excellent durability over 12 hours. This work presents a significant advance for the development of tungsten oxide-based electrocatalysts with anion doping and oxygen vacancies for HER in acidic media.

To synergistically combine the features of high specific capacity of n-type organic materials with the high voltage of p-type organic materials, bipolar phenolthiazine-based cathodes with p-type/n-type structures are gaining increased attention for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Nevertheless, their small molecular structure often leads to dissolution during cycling. To address the challenge, a bipolar poly(phenothiazine iodide-3,3′-diaminobenzidine), abbreviated as P(PTD-DAB), was synthesized as a cathode material. Through comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, we elucidated a cooperative p-type/n-type dual-ion storage mechanism. Specifically, the N atom in the phenothiazine core stores Zn2+ or H+ cations via n-type reactions, while the N atoms connecting phenothiazinium tetraiodide and 3,3′-diaminobenzidine monomers, along with S atoms, act as p-type active sites for storing OTF– anions. The material delivers an average operating voltage of 1 V and achieves a high specific capacity of 211.8 mAh g–1 at a low current density of 0.1 A g–1. Additionally, it shows 90% capacity over 3600 cycles at a high current density of 3 A g–1 while sustaining robust stability at a high mass loading of active cathode (10 mg cm–2). Furthermore, flexible belt-shaped cells maintain 88% capacity retention over 550 cycles at 3 A g–1 even when subjected to repeated bending conditions. This work represents a great advancement in developing bipolar polymers for high-performance AZIBs and offers valuable insights into their design principle and functionality.

Organic thermoelectric materials are not only used in low-grade waste heat recovery but also have frontier applications in sensors, wearable self-powered devices, biomaterials, and smart materials with the development of flexible electronics. However, investigation on the thermoelectric performance of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) comparable to that of conducting polymers and their composites with SWCNTs has been rarely attempted, and there were few reports on SWCNTs alone as organic thermoelectric materials. Certainly, SWCNTs possess high Young’s modulus, high thermal stability, flexibility, lightweight, easily controllable doping level, and facile p–n transition, while the mechanism of molecular doping of SWCNTs remains to be well understood. Here, facile solution processing achieved the enhancement of p-type and n-type thermoelectric performance of SWCNTs. Small-molecular-weight polyethylene glycol treatment improved electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient of SWCNTs (p-SWCNTs) simultaneously, with the power factor of 303.17 ± 46.25 μW·m−1·K−2. Small amount of polyethylenimine doping made the Seebeck coefficient of SWCNTs (n-SWCNTs) turn negative and rendered great air stability of n-SWCNTs. The electrical conductivity and power factor of n-SWCNTs reached 1,702.56 ± 164.13 S·cm−1 and 418.49 ± 46.30 μW·m−1·K−2 at 298 K, respectively. The power factor of n-SWCNTs got even higher at 319.5 K in vacuo, reaching a high value of 643.35 μW·m−1·K−2. Finally, mechanism study in this work provided inspiration and guidance for the application of these types of dopants in the performance improvement of SWCNTs.
