Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) dual layer hollow fiber membrane was modified by coating dopamine and grafting polyethyleneimine , then the hydrophilic and antibacterial PVDF membrane was obtained through quaternization reactions. The attenuated total reflectant Fourier transform infrared spectra (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were applied to confirm the successful modification. The water contact angle measurement suggested that the membrane hydrophilicity was significantly improved. Morphological changes of membranes were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The pure water flux before and after BSA contamination was measured and the flux recovery rate for the modified membrane was as high as 94%. The antibacterial tests showed that the hydrophilic and antibacterial PVDF membrane owned excellent anti-bacterial efficiency and resistance to bacterial adhesion. The average pore size, mechanical property and zeta potential were also investigated. All the results demonstrated this facile method can enhance the hydrophilicity and antibacterial ability of PVDF dual layer hollow fiber membrane, and would have application in water treatment.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is characterized by persistent neuroinflammation and limited tissue repair, creating a need for local drug-delivery systems that combine structural support with immunomodulatory activity. In this study, melatonin-loaded polyvinylidene fluoride–alginate (PVDF–ALG–MEL) nanofibers were fabricated by emulsion electrospinning and evaluated for physicochemical properties, drug release, biocompatibility, macrophage responses, and tissue-associated effects in a rat compression-SCI model, in comparison with free MEL. A formulation containing a nominal 2% (w/w) MEL feed produced stable, bead-free fibers and was selected for further testing. MEL incorporation increased tensile strength from 5.25 ± 0.11 to 6.14 ± 0.12 MPa, reduced the water contact angle from 72.5 ± 1.2° to 57.6 ± 1.1°, and increased swelling at 168 h from 225 ± 8% to 275 ± 9%, while porosity remained above 90%. Under the hydroalcoholic sink conditions used for in vitro characterization, cumulative MEL release reached approximately 95% of the experimentally determined MEL content of the 3.4-mg scaffold specimen within 72 h. Both scaffolds showed low hemolysis and maintained L929 cell metabolic activity. In macrophages, both free MEL and PVDF–ALG–MEL reduced yeast uptake and nitrite accumulation, enhanced apoptotic-cell engulfment, downregulated Il1b, Tnf, and Nos2, and upregulated Il10 and Arg1; however, the effects of the MEL-loaded scaffold were generally more pronounced. At 28 days after SCI, free MEL and the MEL-loaded scaffold were associated with lower Iba-1 and GFAP concentrations, reduced Bax and Gfap expression, and increased NSE, Bcl2, and Gap43. Whole-lesion gene-expression analysis additionally showed lower Il1b and Tnf and higher Il10 and Arg1 expression in the treated groups relative to untreated SCI, with the PVDF–ALG–MEL group showing the most pronounced directional changes in several markers. Functional assessment demonstrated progressive improvement in BBB locomotor scores, gait parameters, and motor-evoked potential responses, with the PVDF–ALG–MEL group showing the most pronounced improvements in several functional endpoints; however, quantitative histomorphometry, cell-specific mechanisms, and physiologically relevant in vivo drug-release kinetics require further investigation. UiO-66-NH 2 is a well-known metal organic framework with high porosity and surface area, and there are modifiable reactive amino groups in its structure, it has been applied in membrane modifications. A novel composite membrane (U1gFx) is successfully prepared by depositing UiO-66-NH 2 onto polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane, and subsequently grafting with perfluoroalkyl polyethoxy acetic acid (FPEOAA). The water contact angle of the modified membrane declines from 124.27° to 71.05°, and the under-water oil contact angle increases from 86.03° to 149.45°, indicating a good hydrophilic and oleophobic change. The modified membranes show enlarged porosity and water flux due to the introduction of UiO-66-NH 2 . The optimum membrane (U1gF10) shows excellent separation performance for various oil/water emulsions, including n -hexadecane, petroleum ether, dichloromethane and soybean oil. > 95 % oil rejection and up to 8081.9 L·m −2 ·h −1 of permeation flux are achieved under the vacuum filtration mode (0.085 MPa). While treating the n -hexadecane/water emulsion, all membranes show > 99 % oil rejection in six filtration cycles. Under a dead-end filtration mode, membrane U1gF10 gives a high relative flux recovery rate at 93 % under 0.1 MPa, its pure water flux still keeps as highly as 982.5 L·m −2 ·h −1 , even after three filtration cycles, indicating a good antifouling property and great engineering application potential.

Limited by the inherent properties of being difficult to be polarized due to its high resistance, PVDF bulk material with high β-phase content is hard to obtain by conventional methods which are suitable for membrane material. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed for the mass production of high-performance β-PVDF-based piezoelectric and triboelectric hybrid nanogenerator (PTNG) employing large-scale PVDF films or bulks by using liquid nitrogen to induce a phase transition and in-situ doped conductive polyaniline (PANI). Polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) with high piezoelectric coefficient , filled with PANI as a conductive material and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC) for increasing porosity, is hot pressed to obtain a composite piezoelectric polymer for PTNG. The subsequent “quenching” process of the piezoelectric polymer allows its high content of β-phase, which in turn makes the PTNG exhibit excellent piezoelectric properties . The optimal output of the PTNG, with a β-phase content of up to 71%, reaches 246 V and 122 μA at the frequency of 30 Hz and pressure of 0.31 MPa, and the power density is calculated to be 6.69 W/m 2 . Moreover, the PTNG can directly light up 119 blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a size of 3 mm in series. The excellent performance verifies the reliability and accuracy of the method, that is, the β-phase transformation of disordered amorphous PVDF occurs at low temperature and high-rate quenching, and PANI opens the channel for carriers to move charge in the bulk material. This innovative method presented here is a simple and efficient approach for preparation of bulks with high β-phase and low internal resistance, which undoubtedly provides a feasible direction for the industrialization of high-performance PENGs.

Dielectric capacitors are promising in micro-electronics, portable equipment and hybrid electric vehicles due to their specific features of flexibility, ultrahigh operating voltage and fast charging-discharging rate. The dielectric properties of polymer-based nanocomposite are much related to the interface binding between fillers and matrix. In this work, a surface modification approach employed newfound titanate coupling agent was developed to improve the compatibility between BT nanoparticles and PVDF matrix. After treated by the modifier TC-2, a coating layer contained with active organic groups was formed on the surface of BT nanoparticles. Benefited from the improved dispersibility and compatibility of modified BT nanoparticles in PVDF matrix, the breakdown strength of the nanocomposites was much enhanced. The monodisperse mBT-2 nanoparticles treated with appropriate amount of modifier dramatically enlarged the breakdown strength from 397 kV/mm for neat PVDF to 517 kV/mm for 4 vol% mBT-2 loading nanocomposite. Compared with BT/PVDF, the improvements on the energy storage performance in mBT-2/PVDF are significant. The maximum discharged energy density of 11.27 J/cm 3 for 4 vol% loading mBT-2/PVDF is nearly double of that for 4 vol% loading BT/PVDF, and the energy efficiency for mBT-2/PVDF is also increased. The modification method originally represented here has great potential in developing high energy density nanocomposites for advanced applications.

Multifaceted bio-contamination, including natural organic matter (NOM) and microbial colonization, challenges the application of hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes in water purification. To address organic and biofouling, a UV irradiation grafting strategy is developed to fabricate dual-functional PVDF membranes with integrated antibacterial and anti-fouling capabilities. Two quaternary ammonium salts (QAS)—short-chain allyltrimethylammonium chloride (ATMAC, C6) and long-chain methacryloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride (DMC, C9)—are grafted onto PVDF membranes. Herein, C6 and C9 denote quaternary ammonium salts bearing hexyl and nonyl alkyl substituents, respectively. The best surface modification induced a 43.4% reduction in water contact angle (88.5° to 45.1°), demonstrating significantly enhanced hydrophilic characteristics of the modified membranes, surfaces with enhanced positive character (zeta potential shifted from − 30.22 mV to − 20.15 mV), and dual antifouling mechanisms via pore-clogging mitigation and hydration layer formation. The PVDF membrane grafted with 7.5 wt% DMC demonstrates optimal performance, achieving a 98.5% flux recovery ratio during sodium alginate filtration and > 99% bactericidal efficiency against E. coli and S. aureus . By grafting QAS(e.g., DMC/ATMAC) onto PVDF membranes, this approach mitigates irreversible fouling while sustaining long-term antimicrobial activity, providing a robust solution for biofouling-resistant membranes in sustainable water treatment. Efficient separation of oil–water emulsion remains a persistent challenge in wastewater treatment, as conventional membranes often suffer from fouling, poor recyclability, and lack of dynamic control. Here, we report a light-triggered thermo-responsive superwetting nanofiber membrane (PPZ@GO) that combines electrospun PNIPAM/PVDF nanofibers with graphene oxide (GO) and in situ grown bimetallic CoZn–ZIF frameworks. In this hybrid design, PVDF provides mechanical robustness, PNIPAM enables reversible thermo-responsive wettability, GO facilitates rapid photothermal heating, and CoZn–ZIF imparts hierarchical roughness and enhanced interfacial functionality. The optimized [email protected] % membrane exhibits rapid photothermal heating to 48.6 °C within 20 s under simulated solar light, enabling reversible wettability switching between underwater superoleophobicity (light off, below LCST) and under-oil superhydrophobicity (light on, above LCST). This dual-mode response allows on-demand separation of both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions, achieving fluxes above 2000 L m −2 h −1 and 1000 L m −2 h −1 , respectively, with separation efficiencies exceeding 99 %. The membrane further demonstrates excellent antifouling resistance, mechanical durability, and stable performance across repeated cycles. By integrating photothermal conversion with thermo-responsive switching in a nanofibrous MOF–polymer scaffold, this work provides a versatile strategy for designing smart, energy-efficient membranes, offering broad potential for next-generation oily wastewater remediation and advanced separation technologies.

A low-cost quasi-solid dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) with a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 1.79% was assembled using PVDF-based gel electrolyte plasticized by PC–EC and electrodeposited Pt counter electrodes. Its morphology, chemical structure, electrochemical and photoelectric properties were examined by SEM, FTIR, EIS and I – V tests, respectively. The results showed that PC–EC plasticized gel electrolyte can greatly prevent the α-phase formation of PVDF, and had the loose structure & many interpenetrating holes due to the effective intercalation of PC & EC into PVDF chains through their dipole interaction. It made the migration or diffusion of iodide ions to electrodes easier. Furthermore, its conductivity was increased to 2.34 mS/cm from 1.00 mS/cm of unplasticized gel electrolyte. V oc , J sc , FF & η values of DSSC plasticized by PC–EC were all enhanced. Compared with Pt electrode obtained by thermal decomposition, electrodeposited Pt electrode had the lower charge-transfer resistance and the better contact with gel electrolyte in quasi-solid DSSC due to its orderly grain arrangement, more even, denser and larger active surface. Meanwhile, its process also had little influence on ITO sheet resistance. Thus, its quasi-solid DSSC has the higher photoelectric conversion efficiency.

In this study, we systematically evaluated the antibiofouling behavior of quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) blended polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) combined with flow cytometry (FCM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) measurements. QCM-D tests showed that the introduction of QAC reduced bacterial attachment due to the biocidal functions of QAC. FCM indicated that cell integrity of the bacteria in the suspension flowing along QAC-modified membrane surfaces during the QCM-D test was severely affected. CLSM confirmed the significantly lower attachment of bacteria and higher dead/live cell ratio onto the surface of modified membranes after the washing step in QCM-D tests. Both FCM and CLSM results validated the antibacterial behavior of QAC-modified membranes by a contact-killing mechanism, which is in agreement with that of QCM-D tests. In addition, the bacterial cells accumulated on modified membrane surface exhibited higher reversibility compared to the control membrane, indicating ease of membrane cleaning. The results highlight that the combined use of QCM-D, FCM, and CLSM can comprehensively characterize the antibiofouling behavior of membranes.

To develop a novel membrane with controllable wettability in response to external stimuli for intelligent oil/water separation is always in urgent demand. In this study, a pH-responsive nanofibrous membrane was prepared through the step-by-step modification of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) electrospun nanofiber membrane , including mussel-inspired self-polymerization of polydopamine (PDA), immobilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and self-assembly of thiols. A rough membrane surface could be formed by the loading of AgNPs, and the subsequent introduction of HS(CH 2 ) 11 CH 3 /HS(CH 2 ) 10 COOH via metal-thiol coordination could endow the membrane with pH-responsive wettability. The surface of the membrane was able to quickly and reversely switch between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity through simply applying pH stimulus at pH 7 and 13, respectively. The membrane can be applied for separating multiphase oil/water mixtures, achieving separation efficiency of over 99.2% for light oil/water mixture and 96.5% for heavy oil/water mixture with a stable flux of around 2500 L/m 2 ·h for water and 11,000 L/m 2 ·h for oil over the 10-cycle separation process. Meanwhile, the membrane exhibited separation efficiency of higher than 99% for all the tested oil-in-water emulsions, and the water flux of the membrane could be effectively recovered by water rinsing. Moreover, the membrane demonstrated a good structural stability against rigorous mechanical abrasion. The pH-responsive membrane could be potentially applied for smart and energy-saving separation and recycle of oil or water from oily wastewater.

Membranes were widely applied in the zero discharge of industrial wastewater. The improvement of nanofiltration efficiency was a persistent objective in industrial wastewater treatment. Efficient PVP-PVDF/MXene membranes were fabricated via adjusting the molecular weight of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and the dosage of MXene nanosheets. PVP-PVDF/MXene membrane predominantly owned a mesoporous structure with a key pore size distribution ranging from 2 to 5 nm. PVP influenced the abundant vertical and horizontal nanochannels of PVP-PVDF/MXene membranes. The lamellar structure of MXene nanosheets created tortuous pathways in the membrane and increased transport path length. They mutually determined water flux and rejection of dyes in various wastewater treatment. Methylene blue (MB) was mainly rejected through the size exclusion effect in nanochannels. MXene nanosheets supplied specific surface area, hydrophilicity and negatively charged functional groups. First-principles calculations revealed an adsorption energy of −7.89 eV, which was attributed to the strong interaction between MXene nanosheets and MB. MXene nanosheets promoted MB rejection. The optimal PVP-PVDF/MXene membrane prepared by 10,000 Da PVP and 0.008 g MXene achieved the highest water flux of 372.09 L·m −2 ·h −1 and MB rejection of 99.07% under ultra-low pressure condition of 0.02 bar. Flux recovery rate of PVP-PVDF/MXene membranes was 86.97% in MB treatment. They possessed excellent antifouling and recovery capacities. PVP-PVDF/MXene membrane was a potential candidate for application in wastewater treatment.

The discharge of oily wastewater and industrial wastewater poses serious threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health, highlighting the urgent need for advanced antifouling membranes capable of efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation. Unlike conventional surface coating or single-component modification strategies, herein, we report a facile strategy to transform hydrophobic PVDF membranes into superhydrophilic ones with hierarchically gradient pores. This approach distinctively exploits mussel-inspired L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), rather than dopamine, in combination with polyethyleneimine (PEI) co-deposition and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanostructuring, forming a highly stable, multifunctional hydrophilic network that anchors CNTs while synergistically regulating pore size, pore distribution, and surface wettability. As a result, the average pore size decreased from 0.4075 μm to 0.2883 μm, enhancing selective permeability. The optimized L-DOPA/PEI/CNTs/PVDF membrane exhibited an ultrahigh pure water flux of 5367.9 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and achieved over 99 % rejection of diverse surfactant-stabilized emulsions. Moreover, the membrane demonstrated excellent antifouling, consistently maintaining ≥98 % oil rejection over seven cycles, attributed to the formation of a compact hydration layer. By integrating bio-inspired adhesion chemistry with nanostructured pore-gradient engineering, this study provides a scalable and environmentally relevant route for fabricating high-performance separation membranes, offering strong potential for sustainable oily wastewater treatment and resource recovery applications.
