Developing innovative, efficient, and economical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts for zinc-air batteries (ZABs) is critical but challenging, and biomimetic-designed hybrid catalysts stand out. In this work, the hierarchical N-doped carbon nanofibers (Ru@FeZn-HNC/CNFs) anchored by ultra-small Ru nanoparticles (NPs) was achieved by covalent organic framework/metal organic framework (COF/MOF) template approach combined with electrospinning technology, which exhibits a unique and stable biomimetic “branch and leaf” morphology. This distinctive biomimetic architecture not only facilitates fast charge transfer and mass transport, but also exposes more active sites (Ru NPs, M-N x , and active N species). It is possible to remarkably reduce the Ru content without sacrificing ORR activity, thus ensuring cost-effectiveness. Specifically, the synthesized catalyst presents impressive limiting current density (J L = 6.15 mA cm −2 ), outstanding half-wave potential (E 1/2 = 0.85 V), high 4e − selectivity (H 2 O 2 yield <2 %) and distinguished durability (94.7 % current retention after 20 h) at low Ru loading, surpassing the state-of-art Pt/C catalyst. Furthermore, the aqueous/solid-state ZABs assembled by Ru@FeZn-HNC/CNFs perform significantly better open-circuit voltage (1.48 V and 1.41 V), power density (175 mW cm −2 and 86.9 mW cm −2 ), specific capacity (810.2 mAh g Zn −1 and 720.2 mAh g Zn −1 ), and long-term cycling durability (> 300 h and 1000 min) than Pt/C-based counterparts. Intriguingly, Ru@FeZn-HNC/CNFs-based flexible ZABs demonstrate satisfactory foldability and mechanical stability. This study evidences the feasibility of Ru@FeZn-HNC/CNFs catalyst employed as air cathode of ZABs, and opens up a new avenue for the exploration of flexible wearable energy supply devices.

Rechargeable Li–CO 2 battery is a facilitative and promising device for the conversion of CO 2 to electrochemical energy. However, it remains a challenge to enhance the sluggish decomposition kinetics of lithium carbonate as the discharge product. Herein, the Ru nanoparticles anchored on N-doped mesoporous hollow carbon nanospheres (Ru-AHCNs) are designed as cathode to enhance the electrochemical performance of Li–CO 2 battery. The Ru-AHCNs cathode displays a high discharge specific capacity of 11194.4 mA h g −1 at the current density of 100 mA g −1 . In addition, the Ru-AHCNs cathode can stably run over 50 cycles and maintain a small overpotential (<1.38 V) with a limited capacity of 1000 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 . The excellent stability and catalytic activity of the cathode are ascribed to the following factors: (i) Uniform deposition of Ru nanoparticles in hollow carbon nanospheres can enhance the decomposition of Li 2 CO 3 and provide considerable exposure to active sites. (ii) N-doped mesoporous hollow carbon nanospheres can provide abundant electron transport channels and promote the nucleation of discharge products. These results evidently prove the reversible formation and decomposition of the discharge products, indicating that Ru-AHCNs cathode possesses excellent bifunctional catalytic activity.

Continuous and effective hydrogen evolution under high current densities remains a challenge for water electrolysis owing to the rapid performance degradation under continuous large-current operation. In this study, theoretical calculations, operando Raman spectroscopy, and CO stripping experiments confirm that Ru nanocrystals have a high resistance against deactivation because of the synergistic adsorption of OH intermediates (OH ad ) on the Ru and single atoms. Based on this conceptual model, we design the Ni single atoms modifying ultra-small Ru nanoparticle with defect carbon bridging structure (UP-RuNi SAs /C) via a unique unipolar pulse electrodeposition (UPED) strategy. As a result, the UP-RuNi SAs /C is found capable of running steadily for 100 h at 3 A cm −2 , and shows a low overpotential of 9 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 under alkaline conditions. Moreover, the UP-RuNi SAs /C allows an anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer to operate stably at 1.95 V cell for 250 h at 1 A cm −2 .

The utilization of plant polyphenols as catalyst carriers holds promise for environmentally friendly catalysis. However, challenges such as the inhomogeneous distribution of organic ligands often hinder their effectiveness. In this study, lignin–metal supramolecular framework were formed through ionic coordination self-assembly, achieved by oxidative ammonolysis modified lignin. The specific spatial domain-limiting effect of lignin–metal supramolecular framework ensures the dispersion and stability of catalyst active sites. Carbon-coated trimetallic catalysts (Ru–FeNi@OALC) derived from lignin–metal supramolecules exhibit promising performance, with low overpotentials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER, η10 = 290 mV) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, η10 = 52 mV), surpassing commercial noble metal catalysts. Additionally, these catalysts demonstrate long-lasting water-splitting performance, highlighting their potential for sustainable catalytic reactions. Molecular simulations and DFT theoretical calculations elucidate the feasibility of lignin oxidative ammonolysis modification and reveal the coordination mechanism. Furthermore, the abundant defects and disorder in the coordination polymer-derived carbon materials optimize electron transfer processes and accelerate reaction kinetics. This construction strategy towards designable polyphenol–metal supramolecular framework presents a promising avenue for the green synthesis of a variety of metal/carbon composite catalysts, contributing to sustainable catalysis and environmental protection.

High-value utilization of cellulosic biomass proves critical to advancing sustainable development and unlocking circular economy potential. This work reports a bifunctional zirconium phosphate (ZrP)-supported Ru catalyst (Ru/ZrP) for efficient cellulose-to-sugar alcohol conversion, delivering a 56.4% C6 sugar alcohol yield under reaction conditions of 200 °C and 3 MPa H2. The performance shows a 24-fold enhancement relative to Ru/ZrO2 (2.4% yield), with combined characterization and kinetic studies confirming that Brønsted–Lewis acid (P–OH/Zr4+) synergy governs the catalytic enhancement. Brønsted acid sites drive cellulose hydrolysis to glucose by accelerating β-1,4-glycosidic bond cleavage, while Lewis acid sites synergize with Ru sites to promote hydrogenation of glucose into sorbitol. Notably, the optimized Ru/ZrP1.4 catalyst also enabled effective disaccharide-to-sugar alcohol conversion, achieving a 54.3% C6 sugar alcohol yield using cellobiose as the substrate and maintaining stability over five cycles without any obvious deactivation. This work elucidates the critical roles of Brønsted–Lewis acid sites in mediating cellulose conversion, establishing a robust and efficient multifunctional Ru/ZrP catalyst for aqueous-phase biomass catalysis.

Levlinic acid (LA) and its derived γ-valerolactone (GVL) are the two important biomass derived platform molecules, which showed wide application in the fields of fine chemicals, drug and liquid fuel industrials. Considering the coupling of sequential steps for glucose to LA and GVL, selective production of LA and GVL via glucose one-pot conversion in water is an open challenge. Herein, we used metal chlorides as the acidic catalyst for glucose conversion to LA, obtaining the high yield of 77.8 C-mol% over SnCl 4 . Moreover, using the SnCl 4 and Ru/C as the combined catalyst, glucose or cellulose could be converted to GVL with the high yield of 60.1 or 57.9 C-mol% in the case of in situ hydrogenation by formic acid (the by-products during LA formation) decomposition. The formation of LA was responsible for the cooperative effect of BAS (Bronsted acid sites) and LAS (Lewis acid sites) of SnCl 4 for accelerating glucose isomerization, fructose dehydration followed by 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) rehydration, while the GVL production is relative to the highly efficient formic acid decomposition to H 2 followed by LA hydrogenation to GVL over Ru/C. This study provided an avenue for facile and highly efficient conversion of biomass and the derivatives to LA and GVL using commercial catalysts.

Concurrent activation of lattice oxygen (O L ) and molecular oxygen (O 2 ) is crucial for the efficient catalytic oxidation of biomass-derived molecules over metal oxides. Herein, we report that the introduction of ultralow-loading of Ru single atoms (0.42 wt%) into Mn 2 O 3 matrix (0.4%Ru-Mn 2 O 3 ) greatly boosts its catalytic activity for the aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). The FDCA productivity over the 0.4%Ru-Mn 2 O 3 (5.4 mmol FDCA ‧g cat -1 ‧h -1 ) is 4.9 times higher than the Mn 2 O 3 . Especially, this FDCA productivity is also significantly higher than that of existing Ru and Mn-based catalysts. Experimental and theoretical investigations discovered that the Ru single atom facilitated the formation of oxygen vacancy (O v ) in the catalyst, which synergistically weakened the Mn-O bond and promoted the activation of O L . The co-presence of Ru single atoms and O v also promote the adsorption and activation of both O 2 and HMF. Consequently, the dehydrogenation reaction energy barrier of the rate-determining step was reduced via both the O L and chemisorbed O 2 dehydrogenation pathways, thus boosting the catalytic oxidation reactions.

Chronic refractory wounds present substantial clinical difficulties, owing to their complex wound microenvironments featuring bacterial colonization, sustained inflammation, and deficient angiogenesis. Existing treatment options often fall short of concurrently overcoming these interconnected obstacles, underscoring the demand for integrated therapeutic platforms that combine antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and pro-angiogenic properties. Drawing inspiration from natural peroxisomes, a lattice-reconstructed Ru-clusters are designed on FeOOH-based self-adaptive artificial peroxisome with programmed reactive oxygen species (ROS) regulation for infectious and inflammatory chronic wounds. Within this architecture, electron-rich Ru clusters and hole-rich FeOOH domains establish an efficient electron-transfer network. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that this distinctive electronic structure lowers reaction energy barriers, enabling pH-switchable ROS-catalytic behaviors. Under acidic wound pH, LR-RuC@FeOOH catalyzes ROS generation to disrupt bacterial metabolism and eliminate infections, while under neutral conditions, it efficiently scavenges ROS to alleviate oxidative stress and support tissue repair, enabling a logically sequenced therapeutic progression from infection control to inflammation resolution. In vivo experiments using diabetic foot ulcers confirmed that LR-RuC@FeOOH significantly enhanced bacterial clearance, attenuated inflammatory responses, stimulated neovascularization, and accelerated wound closure. These results position LR-RuC@FeOOH as an artificial peroxisome with stage-specific therapies and promising translational potential for the treatment of refractory diabetic wounds and other infection-related pathologies.

Luminescent metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are used for the detection of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) due to their large surface area and pore volume as well as their special optical properties. However, most self-luminescent MOFs are not only complex to synthesize and unstable in water but also feature a “turn-off” sensing system, which has highly restricted their practical applications in OP detection. Herein, a “turn-on” fluorescence sensor based on the guest-induced luminescence MOF Ru(bpy)32+@UiO-66 was constructed, which realized the sensitive detection of OPs through a dual-enzyme system for the first time. Compared with self-luminescent MOFs, Ru(bpy)32+@UiO-66 was not only more easily synthesized but also had higher chemical and photostability in water. In this strategy, by means of the hydrolysis of AChE and ChOx, H2O2will be produced, which can oxidize Fe2+to Fe3+, thereby quenching the fluorescence of Ru(bpy)32+@UiO-66. In the presence of OPs, the activity of AChE can be inhibited, resulting in the inability to generate H2O2and Fe3+, which will turn on the fluorescence signal of Ru(bpy)32+@UiO-66. As a result, the Ru(bpy)32+@UiO-66 sensing system not only had high sensitivity for OPs detection but also possessed a satisfactory detection recovery rate for parathion-methyl in real samples, which provides a new approach for OP detection in food safety as well as environmental monitoring.

It has been attracting extensive research interest how to promote the electrocatalytic performance of transition-metal layered double hydroxides (LDHs) for water splitting. Here, we designed a heteroatom-doping and conductive metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs) co-modification strategy to successfully construct a Ru-doped CoCu-HHTP (HHTP=2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) /CoCu-LDH nanosheets array on the Cu foam substrate (labeled as CoCuRu-HHTP/CoCu-LDH). Electrochemical measurements showed that CoCu-LDH, CoCuRu-LDH, CoCu-HHTP/CoCu-LDH and CoCuRu-HHTP/CoCu-LDH separately required an overpotential of 204 mV, 175 mV, 69 mV, 27 mV to deliver the current density of -10 mA cm-2 for HER; and 345 mV, 216 mV, 275 mV, 204 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2 for OER; in 1 M KOH solution. The above facts clearly demonstrate that the present co-modification strategy significantly enhances the electrocatalytic water splitting performance of CoCu-LDH. In a two-electrode setup using the as-prepared CoCuRu-HHTP/CoCu-LDH nanosheets array as the cathode and anode simultaneously, only a cell voltage of 1.48 V was required to deliver the current density of 10 mA cm-2, which is comparable to that of pure noble metal-based materials and outperforms most MOF-based catalysts reported.

Chemical recycling of polycarbonate (PC) waste can effectively upgrade PC to valuable chemicals. This work developed a novel catalytic system composed of Ru-NbOPO 4 as the catalyst and decane as the solvent for the selective hydrodeoxygenation of PC waste to cycloalkanes, a potential additive for jet fuels. The depolymerization degree and product distribution under the condition of different catalysts and solvents were investigated. The results proved that the combination of Ru-NbOPO 4 and decane exhibited the >99 % depolymerization degree of PC and > 99 % selectivity to cycloalkanes under 240 °C. The acidic sites in the NbOPO 4 framework effectively enhanced the hydrodeoxygenation capacity of the catalyst. The catalytic system can achieve the total conversion of real PC wastes (discarded CDs and water buckets) into cycloalkanes with >99 % selectivity under 240 °C. The by-product CO 2 derived from the carbonyl linking units in PC can also be converted into CH 4 along with the formation of cycloalkanes in one-pot reaction, increasing the catalytic efficiency of the system and decreasing the emission of CO 2 . With the advantages of high selectivity to cycloalkanes and efficient for real waste PC, the developed catalytic system provides a new approach for the selective upgradation of PC waste to cycloalkane fuels.

In this work, we designed a new strategy for ultrasensitive detection of CEA based on efficient electrochemiluminescence (ECL) quenching of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -doped SiO 2 nanocomposite by ferrocene using target recycling amplification technique. A large number of [email protected] 2 ECL signal probe were firstly assembled on the novel magnetic core−shell Fe 3 O 4 @Au nanoparticles (NPs), then the ferrocene-labeled ECL quenching probe (Fc-probe) was linked to the magnetic NPs. Finally, numerous DNA1 sequences were produced by target CEA-triggered multiple recycling amplification and displaced the Fc-probe on the magnetic NPs, leading to significantly enhanced ECL signal for CEA detection. Because of the designed cascade signal amplification strategy, the newly developed method achieved a wide linear range of 10 fg/mL to 10 ng/mL with a low detection limit of 3.5 fg/mL. Furthermore, taking advantages of the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @Au NPs for carring abundant signal probes, sensing target and ECL detection, the developed ECL strategy is convenient, rapid and displayed high sensitivity for CEA detection, which has great potential for analyzing the clinical samples in practical disease diagnosis applications.
