Preparation and Properties of BC/PPy/TiO2 Composite Membrane

Yi Zheng,Shi Yan Chen,Lian Tang,Wei Li Zheng,Chuan Lu,Hua Ping Wang

Bacterial cellulose (BC) /Polypyrrole (PPy) /TiO2 composite membrane was successfully prepared by in situ chemical oxidation polymerization of pyrrole in TiO2 sol into BC membrane matrix with different concentration of TiO2. The results of the field emission scanning electron microscopy observation revealed that the TiO2 nanoparticles coated with PPy were well homogeneously dispersed in the BC matrix. The photocatalytic activity of composite membrane was measured by methyl orange reaction model. Furthermore, the chemical structure of composite membrane and the anatase-TiO2 crystal structure were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and XRD analysis, respectively. According to this study, the photocatalytic activity of composite membranes was improved significantly by the addition of TiO2 due to the synergistic reaction between TiO2 and PPy. Besides that, the membrane exhibited the striking flexibility and mechanical properties. This study provided a green and facile method to prepare the BC /PPy /TiO2 composite membrane which would have potential applications in wastewater treatment.

Photothermal Propane Dehydrogenation Catalyzed by VOx-Doped TiO2 Nanoparticles

Xiangyang Ji,Yue Ma,Xiao Sun,Shaojia Song,Kun Yang,Weixin Huang,Chunming Xu,Bohan Feng,Jian Liu,Weiyu Song

Propane direct dehydrogenation (PDH) has received much attention. How to effectively catalyze inert C–H bond activation is of great significance for industrial development. Pt-based catalysts show excellent activity but are limited by their expensive price. Cr-based catalysts are scarcely applied owing to their high toxicity. V-based catalysts are appropriate candidates for their cheap price and low toxicity, but they suffer from high energy consumption. The photothermal synergy effect induced by nonradiative relaxation is expected to make the C–H bond activation and hydrogen coupling process easier compared to bare thermal catalysis. Herein, a set of V/TiO2 nanoscale catalysts were synthesized. The optimized 3 wt % V/TiO2 catalyst (hereafter simplified as 3V) has a particle size of ∼26 nm, achieving a propylene production rate of 342 μmol·g–1·h–1 at 500 °C with UV–vis light radiation, which is 9.2% higher compared with bare thermal conditions. In situ radiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that photon injection leads to more electron-deficient V atoms (Vδ+, 5 > δ > 3). The strengthened Lewis acidity enhances the C3H8 activation as revealed by kinetic evidence and in situ C3H8-DRIFT measurements. The calculated molecular orbital diagrams show that the V atoms decrease the energy gap between the highest occupied orbital (HOMO) of C3H8 and the lowest unoccupied orbital (LUMO) of the model catalyst. This work describes an efficient photothermal synergy approach, specifically the nonthermal effect for promoting propane dehydrogenation.

A smart underoil“water diode”Janus TiO2 mesh membrane

Xiaoyan Yu,Sibo Kang,Xiaoyu Jiao,Hua Lai,Ruijie Wang,Zhongjun Cheng

Recently, Janus membranes with particular ability in unidirectional water permeation, known as “water diode”, have attracted increased attention. However, almost all existing Janus membranes are focused on controlling water permeation in air, similar membranes can work in complicated environments, such as oil, are still quite unusual, let alone with smart controllability. Herein, we report a TiO 2 nanostructures coated mesh membrane. The membrane’s surface wettability can be reversibly switched between uniformly underoil superhydrophobicity and Janus underoil hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity as unilateral UV irradiation and heating are alternately carried out, consequently, on/off control of water permeation between blocking state and unidirectional penetrating state can be realized. Moreover, by controlling the size of the region irradiated by UV light for 50 min, penetrating channels with controlled size can be designed. Based on this advantage, different independent penetrating channels with diameter from 2 mm to 10 mm can be obtained, and precise control of water permeation flux from 48,432 Lm −2 h −1 to 70,553 Lm −2 h −1 can be achieved. Finally, based on the excellent controllability, some significant applications such as the removal of water from oil, underoil multichannel chemical reaction, and droplet pumping were also demonstrated. This work reports a new membrane with smart underoil water permeation controllability, given its controllability and particular wetting performance, it is potentially used in many fields, for example, oil purification, droplet manipulation, and microfluidic devices .

Weathering properties of wood treated with 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane-TiO2

Shi Danchen,Wang Wenxuan,Liang Daxin,He Zengcheng,Wang Yonggui,Xiao Zefang,Yu Yang,Wang Haigang,Xie Yanjun

Plantation poplar is one of the most commonly used fast-growing woods in China. However, it is susceptible to weathering due to climatic conditions such as sunlight irradiation, rain, temperature changes, and oxidation. Ultraviolet (UV)-induced discoloration is a noticeable problem of this wood during its outdoor use. In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles were deposited onto a wood surface via a bridge of 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (IPTS). Accelerated weathering tests were conducted by exposing wood veneers to UV, water spraying, and condensation for 336 h to evaluate the treatment effect on their anti-weathering properties. During treatment, TiO 2 nanoparticles were bonded with IPTS and grafted onto the wood surface via the isocyanate group. The nanoparticles functioned as a UV filter and reduced photodegradation, while IPTS helped prevent the wood from collapsing. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the photodegradation of lignin during weathering was effectively inhibited after treatment. After artificial weathering for 192 h, the color difference (Δ E ) of both untreated and IPTS-treated woods increased up to 40 while that of IPTS-TiO 2 -treated wood increased only to 12. The results suggest that IPTS-TiO 2 modification is feasible for improving the anti-weathering properties of poplar wood and may provide an effective strategy for industrial wood modification.

Highly selective IrMo/TiO2 catalyst for hydrogenation of nitroarenes

Jiarui Zhao,Lingzhe Fang,Junhong Fu,Jian Wang,Qike Jiang,Tao Li,Jiahui Huang

The performance of many supported metal catalysts is markedly enhanced by promoters. Here, we demonstrate the introduction of Mo into TiO 2 -supported IrMo catalysts greatly boosts the 3-vinylaniline (3-VA) selectivity of the hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene (3-NS). With the rise of Mo component in IrMo/TiO 2 catalysts, the Ir that activate H 2 are surrounded by more Mo species and become more oxidized, which prevents flat adsorption of 3-NS on Ir; meanwhile, Mo(V) species that are favorable for activation of nitro group of 3-NS increase, thus the synergistic effect affords excellent 3-VA selectivity. The optimal catalyst 1Ir9Mo/TiO 2 displays 99.8% selectivity of 3-VA at a 100% conversion. It also shows good recyclability and universality in selectively reducing unsaturated nitroarenes to corresponding anillines with exceptional selectivity.

Preparation, microstructure and luminescence properties of TiO2/WO3 composites

Xiong Sang,Zhang Xiaomeng,Liang Dong

Tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) nanomaterials have become a hot spot in the current research on metal oxides due to their good antibacterial and anticancer properties. In this paper, WO 3 was prepared by the sol–gel method, and samples with different structures and morphologies were obtained by controlling the pH value. Ammonium paratungstate and tetrabutyl titanate were used as raw materials, and the amount of Tetrabutyl titanate (TBOT) was changed to regulate the TiO 2 /WO 3 samples were prepared by varying the amount of TBOT. The structure, morphology and luminescence properties were also investigated. The results show that the monoclinic WO 3 nanoparticles as well as TiO 2 /WO 3 composite nanomaterials were prepared successfully. Under acidic and alkaline conditions, the particles are mainly rod-shaped and granular, and the smaller the pH is, the smaller the particle size is. The average grain size is 49.8 nm. The strongest luminescence of the samples at 611 nm was evident at an excitation wavelength of 394 nm. The luminescence property of WO 3 prepared under alkaline condition is better than that under acidic condition. The luminescence intensity of the prepared TiO 2 /WO 3 composites by adding 1 ml TBOT in acidic conditions increased by 21% compared with that of 2 ml TBOT. The luminescence intensity of the prepared TiO 2 /WO 3 composites by adding 2 mL TBOT in alkaline condition increased by 14% compared with that prepared by adding 1 mL TBOT.

Engineering tailorable TiO2 nanotubes for NIR-controlled drug delivery

Xu Yue,Zhao Chenxi,Zhang Xi,Xu Jingwen,Yang Lingling,Zhang Zhechen,Gao Zhida,Song Yan-Yan

Infectious diseases caused by bacteria are a global threat to the human health. Here, we propose a solvent “irrigation” technique to endow TiO 2 nanotubes (NTs) to precisely modify with functional nanomaterials, and apply them in constructing a near-infrared (NIR) light controlled drug-delivery system for rapid necrosis of bacteria. In this design, the NIR stimuli-responsive functional shell is located on the external tube wall of TiO 2 NT; the internal tube wall offers sufficient binding sites for drug loading. Using kanamycin as a model drug, we demonstrate that the reactive oxygen species generated in photocatalysis not only controllably release the loaded drug by scissoring the linked chains, but also effectively compromise bacteria membrane integrity by damaging the cell wall. Benefiting from the damages, antibiotics rapidly enter the bacteria and reach ≥99.9% reduction in Escherichia coli colony within only 2 h. Importantly, such a covalently conjugation-based delivery system can efficiently relieve radical-induced inflammation and cytotoxicity. This study provides an innovative design strategy for engineering delivery systems with tailorable components, enduring stimuli-response by multiple triggers.

A novel CuSbS2–TiO2 nanoparticles synergy structure for photocatalysis

Zhi Guowei,Wang Wei,Zhang Ming,Hao Lingyun,Yang Lu,Liu Jijinhua,Zhao Yijie

In this work, a synergy structure to improve the photocatalytic properties of materials was proposed. CuSbS 2 nanoparticles synthesized by microwave irradiation method were dispersed in TiO 2 sol to form CuSbS 2 –TiO 2 nanoparticles. The properties of composite materials with different TiO 2 sol concentration were investigated by XRD, XPS, etc. The results indicated the as-synthesized CuSbS 2 nanoparticles exhibited chalcostibite structure and the TiO 2 showed anatase phase. The CuSbS 2 –TiO 2 nanoparticles had high absorbance in the visible light and good photocatalysts for the photodegradation reaction of Rhodamine B (RhB). When TiO 2 sol concentration was 0.23 mol/L, the sample possessed a photocatalytic degradation rate of 0.002 min −1 for the degradation of RhB, which was 3 times higher than that by the bare amorphous TiO 2 (0.0007 min −1 ).

Corrosion behavior of brass in SCW-SDBS-TiO2 nanofluid

Kai Wu,Yi Zhang,Fang Ge,Xin Huang,Hong-Hua Ge,Yu-Zeng Zhao,Xin-Jing Meng,Bin-Lin Dou

A stable TiO 2 nanofluid with absolute value of Zeta potential greater than 44 mV was prepared by using sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) as a dispersing agent in this paper. Electrochemical methods and surface analysis were used to study the corrosion behavior of brass in simulated cooling water (SCW), simulated cooling water containing SDSB (SCW-SDBS), and TiO 2 nanofluid (SCW-SDBS-TiO 2 nanofluid). The results show that the total resistance R sum of the brass electrode was smallest and increased slowly with time, and the corrosion current density was largest in SCW. The corrosion products on the brass surface were composed of the inner layer of Cu 2 O and the outer layer of Zn 5 (CO 3 ) 2 (OH) 6 . In SCW-SDBS medium, the R sum value of brass increased rapidly in the first 4 days and was significantly higher than that in SCW. A protective adsorption SDBS film was formed on the brass surface and minimized the corrosion rate of brass in SCW-SDBS medium. In SCW-SDBS-TiO 2 nanofluid, the R sum value of brass was higher than that in SCW, but significantly lower than that in SCW-SDBS medium. There was almost no SDBS adsorption film formed on the brass surface in SCW-SDBS-TiO 2 nanofluid, which significantly reduced the corrosion inhibition performance of SDBS on brass. The competitive adsorption of negatively charged TiO 2 nanoparticles and SDBS anions in the nanofluid on the brass surface might be the reason why the protective SDBS adsorption film was not easy to form on the brass surface in SCW-SDBS-TiO 2 nanofluid.

Hybrid PDMS-TiO2-stainless steel textiles for triboelectric nanogenerators

Gang Jian,Qingzhen Meng,Yong Jiao,Liang Feng,Hui Shao,Fengwei Wang,Fang Meng

Electrophoretic deposition is employed to deposit flower-like TiO 2 (F-TiO 2 ) particles onto stainless steel textiles to obtain a Fe@F-TiO 2 /PDMS hybrid textile as the negative tribo-material. The electrophoresis process enables adjustable deposit amounts and three-dimensional and uniform deposits of flower TiO 2 . The textile triboelectric nanogenerators (tTENGs) fabricated from the Fe@F-TiO 2 /PDMS hybrid textile working in conjunction with cotton and silk exhibit excellent performances. The tTENG generates a voltage of 120 V, a current of 25 μA and an output power of 0.85 W m −2 with the cotton and 110 V, 30 μA and 1.05 W m −2 with the silk. The flower-like TiO 2 is significant for the high performance of the tTENG, being attributed to the tailored surface and improved permittivity. Wearable tTENGs exhibit good durability after 8,000 cycles and power 58 light emitting diodes. By utilizing the worn tTENG, real-time biomechanical energy harvesting is realized; furthermore, a wireless communication via infrared rays is achieved, confirmed by the successfully receiving of the wireless signal and lighting up of the indicator LED. This work demonstrates high-performance hybrid textiles prepared by electrophoretic deposition and tTENGs for applications in wearable real-time energy harvesters and wireless communication units.
