In this report, water-soluble carbon dots (CDs) with stable fluorescence (FL) were designed and synthesized by using environment-friendly reduced L-glutathione (GSH) as the precursor and ethylenediamine (EDA) as the passivating agent through a one-step hydro-thermal method. The CDs, with bright blue FL, had the quantum yield (QY) of 40% and showed excellent monodispersity and solubility in water. The FL intensity was remarkably enhanced when a racemic modification of L-/D-arginine (Arg) was added into the CDs solution. Therefore, the CDs could be considered as a sensitive probe for the detection of Arg. Under optimized conditions, the CDs exhibited a linear fluorescence response in the range of 3–124 μM (R2 = 0.9987) Arg with the detection limit of 2.85 × 10−8 M. In addition, no evident difference was observed when comparing the FL results of L-Arg and D-Arg. Therefore, this method could not be used in the chiral recognition of two enantiomers. Under optimum conditions, the mechanism and the reasons for the enhancement of FL were investigated. The developed method exhibited great stability, selectivity and accuracy in determining the Arg content in human urine sample and the recovery range was from 97.0% to 102.2%. Thus, our proposed method has potential application in biological molecular recognition.

Akebia saponin D (ASD), a triterpenoid saponin with numerous pharmacological activities, is isolated from the rhizome of Dipsacus asper Wall. However, the poor oral bioavailability of ASD restricts its development and clinical use. The purpose of this research is to develop a solid dispersion (ASD-SD) to improve the oral bioavailability of ASD. Poloxamer 407 was employed to prevent ASD from aggregation and Cremophor® RH 40 was used to inhibit multidrug resistance associated protein (MRP) mediated efflux in several new formulations. The particle size was remarkably reduced from 380 nm (ASD) to 230 nm (ASD-SD1 [composition: ASD : Poloxamer 407 : Cremophor® RH 40; ratio: 5 : 9 : 1, w/w/w]). The cumulative release percentage of molecular ASD from dialysis bags was improved from 63.78% (ASD) to 97.12% (ASD-SD1). Single-pass intestinal perfusion studies showed that the absorption of ASD in ASD-SD2 (composition: ASD : Poloxamer 407; ratio: 5 : 9, w/w) was increased approximately 1.8-fold compared to ASD which was mainly due to the particle size reduction, and further promoted by ASD-SD1 about 2.1-fold compared to ASD-SD2 which might be through the MRP inhibition of Cremophor® RH 40. Furthermore, the oral bioavailability in rats was enhanced significantly to 156.9% and 233.1% by ASD-SD2 and ASD-SD1, respectively. Therefore, ASD-SD1 could be a promising drug delivery system to improve the oral absorption of ASD which might be by destroying self-micelles and inhibiting MRP-mediated efflux.

BACKGROUND Growing public concern over the health risks of high-sugar diets has led to a consensus on the necessity of sugar reduction. This research evaluated the effects of oligosaccharides (OS), sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa) and d -allulose as a compound improver on the quality of sugar-reduced bread, aiming to assess the feasibility of substantial sucrose reduction at the same time as maintaining desirable bread characteristics. RESULTS Compared to bread with a 90% sugar reduction, the improved formulation increased specific volume by 50.14% and reduced hardness by 66.69%. It exhibited a homogeneous structure and crust color closely resembling that of full-sugar bread. Low-field NMR analysis revealed better moisture control, delaying water loss and starch retrogradation, with relative crystallinity and retrogradation enthalpy decreased by 45.31% and 59.96%, respectively. Additionally, the combination of XOS and d -allulose boosted volatile compound production, increasing the abundance of aldehydes, esters and heterocyclic compounds, enriching the flavor with fruity and baked aromas. CONCLUSION The improvers enhanced the texture, appearance, flavor and storage stability of sugar-reduced bread, yielding qualities that are comparable to or even surpass conventional bread. These findings provide a new insight for the development of quality improvers designed for sugar-reduced bakery products. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Phenol has various applications in industry, due to its hazardousness, solubility, and volatility, it persists in water and poses a risk to human health. People are excited by the progress of photodegradation technology that facilitates water pollution treatment. The effect of side-chain engineering is proven to enhance photodegradation performance by improving optoelectronic properties. Therefore, here is a strategy that introduces functional groups to change the electron cloud density, achieving excellent optoelectronic properties evidenced by efficient exciton dissociation, separation, and fine-tuned energy level. Subsequently, by coupling of photocatalysis and adsorption, the donor/acceptor (D/A) heterojunction photocatalysts (PBDB-T: BTTIC-TT, PBDB-T: BTTIC-Ph) are designed via loading on coconut-shell carbon to process phenol. The results indicate that the champion photocatalyst PBDB-T: BTTIC-TT possesses superior optoelectronic properties, which can be attributed to the stronger electron-withdrawing ability of thieno[3,2- b ]thiophene than benzene. Consequently, the synergistic efficiency of adsorption and photocatalysis of phenol (10, 20 mg/L) are removed within 10 mins over 90 % which is still valid after twenty cycles. Surprisingly, a high concentration of phenol (100 mg/L) also exhibited excellent removal efficiency of over 80 % within 60 min.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignant tumor in the gastrointestinal tract. Changes in amino acid metabolites have been implicated in tumorigenesis and disease progression. Biomarkers on the basis of chiral amino acids, especially D-amino acids, have not been established for early diagnosis of CRC. Quantification of chiral amino acids, especially very low concentrations of endogenous D-amino acids, is technically challenging. We report here the quantification of L- and D-amino acids in urine samples collected from 115 CRC patients and 155 healthy volunteers, using an improved method. The method of chiral labeling, liquid chromatography, and tandem mass spectrometry enabled separation and detection of 28 amino acids (14 L-amino acids, 13 D-amino acids and Gly). Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis identified 14 targeted variables among these chiral amino acids that distinguished the CRC from the healthy controls. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that D-α-aminobutyric acid (D-AABA), L-alanine (L-Ala), D-alanine (D-Ala), D-glutamine (D-Gln) and D-serine (D-Ser) could be potential biomarkers for CRC. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of combined multi-variables contributed to an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.995 with 98.3 % sensitivity and 96.8 % specificity. A model constructed with D-AABA, D-Ala, D-Gln, and D-Ser achieved an AUC of 0.988, indicating important contributions of D-amino acids to the association with CRC. Further analysis also demonstrated that the metabolic aberration was associated with age and the development of CRC, D-methionine (D-Met) was decreased in CRC patients with age over 50, and D/L-Gln in patients at stage IV was higher than patients at stage I. This study provides the signature of D-amino acids in urine samples and offers a promising strategy for developing non-invasive diagnosis of CRC.

Pueraria flavonoids (PF), the main component of “Getong Tongluo capsule”, were applied in the clinical treatment of cardiovascular diseases. However, the complex nature of multiple-components, along with poor stability and low oral bioavailability of PF, hinders its widespread clinical use. This study aimed to develop D-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS) surface-modified PF-loaded nanocrystals (PF–NCs),and investigate their physico-chemical properties and oral absorption mechanism. The prepared PF-NCs showed as rod shape crystal with an average particle size and polydispersity index of 259.0 ± 7.80 nm and 0.195 ± 0.046. Compared with PF, the stability of PF-NCs was significantly improved. Furthermore, the transport of PF-NCs in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) monolayers was time-, concentration- and energy-dependent. The endocytosis of PF-NCs was mediated mainly through macropinocytosis, caveolin, clathrin and lipid rafts/caveolae. The involvement of multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (MRP2) transporter and P-gp in the transmembrane transport of PF-NCs was also significant. Pharmacokinetic studies demonstrated that PF-NCs exhibited a substantial enhancement of PF's oral bioavailability. Overall, the prepared PF-NCs demonstrated enhanced stability and bioavailability, offering valuable insights for the development of multi-component nanocrystals and investigation into their mechanisms of oral absorption.

Among the various advanced photocatalytic materials, the organic conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) photocatalysts have garnered significant interest due to their exceptional efficiency in photogenerated electron transfer and their structural versatility. In this study, we developed two novel donor-acceptor 1 -acceptor 2 CMP systems through varying the electron donor unit. Pyrene (P) and triphenylamine (T) were acted as donor units (D), respectively, meanwhile dibenzothiophene-S,S-dioxide (BTDO, A 1 ) and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT, A 2 ) as their acceptors to construct two D−A 1 −A 2 type CMP photocatalysts, P-BTDO-EDOT and T-BTDO-EDOT. Their photocatalytic performances were compared and studied through photocatalytic hydrogen production. The findings show that P-BTDO-EDOT possesses higher photocatalytic hydrogen production activity (87.21 mmol g −1 h −1 ) than T-BTDO-EDOT (66.25 mmol g −1 h −1 ) under visible light, attributing to its stable conjugated architecture, larger specific surface area, exceptional optoelectronic capability, wider light absorption, donor unit pyrene with strong electron-donating and efficient charge separation ability. This work not only highlights the potential for designing innovative CMP molecular structures with D−A 1 −A 2 system, but also opens up a new pathway for developing high-efficiency photocatalysts.

Pickering emulsions (PEs) have been regarded as an effective approach to sustaining and preserving the bioactivities of essential oils. The aim of this research is to prepare a PE stabilized by chitosan/alginate nanoparticles (CS-SA NPs) for the encapsulation and stabilization of D-limonene. In this work, the influence of calcium ions (Ca2+) on the morphology and interaction of nanoparticles was studied, and then the preparation technology of CS-SA/Ca2+NPs was optimized. The results showed that the presence of Ca2+reduced the size of the nanoparticles and made them assume a spherical structure. In addition, under the conditions of 0.2 mg/mL CaCl2, 0.6 mg/mL SA, and 0.4 mg/mL CS, the CS-SA/Ca2+NPs had the smallest size (274 ± 2.51 nm) and high stability (−49 ± 0.69 mV). Secondly, the PE was prepared by emulsifying D-limonene with CS-SA/Ca2+NPs, and the NP concentrations and homogenization speeds were optimized. The results showed that the small droplet size PE could be prepared with 2 mg/mL NP and a homogenization speed of 20,000 r/min, and it had excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Most importantly, the emulsion showed higher activity, higher resistance to ultraviolet (UV) and a higher temperature than free D-limonene. This research provides a feasible solution for the encapsulation, protection and delivery of essential oils. Keywords:homogenization speed;thermal stability;ultraviolet stability;antibacterial activity;antioxidant activity

Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) catalysts with high catalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity have been extensively studied, especially Fe and Co-based sulfides. Fe and Co active sites with a strong synergistic effect, which can adjust the electron density distribution and effectively improve the electrocatalytic OER activity. However, TMSs have poor stability in alkaline environment caused by metal ions and sulfur elements are facilitated to dissolve. In this work, TMSs was modified by polyaniline (PANI) to inhibit the precipitation of iron, cobalt, and sulfur elements and enhance its stability under alkaline conditions. Moreover, π-d structure can also be formed by the coating of PANI, which can further adjust its own electronic structure on the basis of stabilizing the TMSs structure, so as to improve the electrochemical performance, rendering them to stably operate at harsh environment for more than 90 h. These findings offer new guidance for improving the electrocatalytic stability of TMSs.

An activatable fluorescence monitoring platform based on a novel Maillard reaction product from d -glucose and L-arginine was prepared through a facile one-pot approach and applied for simultaneous detection of d -isoascorbic acid and tartaric acid . In this work, the new Maillard reaction product GLA was first obtained, and its fluorescence intensity can be effectively quenched by KMnO 4 , resulting from a new complex (GLA-KMnO 4 ) formation between GLA and KMnO 4 . Upon addition of d -isoascorbic acid or tartaric acid, an enhanced fluorescence was observed under the optimumed experimental conditions, indicating a stimuli-responsive fluorescence turn on platform for d -isoascorbic acid or tartaric acid can be developed. The corresponding experimental results showed that this turn on fluorescence sensing platform has a high sensitivity for d -isoascorbic acid or tartaric acid, because the detection limits were 5.9 μM and 21.5 μM, respectively. Additionally, this proposed sensing platform was applied to simultaneously detection of d -isoascorbic acid and tartaric acid in real tap water samples with satisfactory results.

Herein, an ultrasensitive and stereo-selective electrochemiluminescent (ECL) biosensor based on ECL signal amplification of luminol by the synergetic catalysis of a hemin-functionalized composite and gold–platinum nanowires (Au-PtNWs) has been designed for the detection of D-alanine (D-Ala). In the sensor design, D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO) was used to generate the ECL co-reactant (H2O2) for luminol in situ. The reduced graphene oxide-hemin-cysteine (rGO-H-Cys) composite and Au-PtNWs acted not only as amplification labels to amplify signals via synergetic catalysis, but also as an ideal nanocarrier to accelerate electron transfer. A great difference in ECL intensities toward D-Ala and L-Ala was obtained, and an obviously higher intensity was seen for D-Ala. Under optimal conditions, the ECL intensity had a linear relationship with the logarithm of the D-Ala concentration in the range from 1.0 × 10−9 to 5.0 × 10−3 M with a detection limit of 3.3 × 10−10 M (S/N = 3). This study provides a new method for the determination of D-Ala in food with high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and good stability and reproducibility.

Accumulating evidence has suggested that oxidative stress and apoptosis are involved in the ageing process. D-galactose (gal) has been reported to cause symptoms of ageing in rats, accompanied by liver and brain injuries. Our study aimed to investigate the potential antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects of ellagic acid and to explore how these effects act on rats in a D-gal-induced ageing model. Ageing was induced by subcutaneous injection of D-gal (100 mg/kg/d for 8 weeks). Ellagic acid was simultaneously administered to the D-gal-induced ageing rats once daily by intragastric gavage. Finally, the mental condition, body weight, organ index, levels of inflammatory cytokines, antioxidative enzymes, and liver function, as well as the expression of pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins, were monitored. Our results showed that ellagic acid could improve the mental condition, body weight, organ index and significantly decrease the levels of inflammatory cytokines, normalize the activities of antioxidative enzymes, and modulate the expression of apoptotic protein in ageing rats. In conclusion, the results of this study illustrate that ellagic acid was suitable for the treatment of some ageing-associated problems, such as oxidative stress, and had beneficial effects for age-associated diseases.
