Light emission from carbon dots (CDs) is of great interest in both electroluminescence and photoluminescence. Herein, we construct electroluminescent and photoluminescent light-emitting diodes (LEDs) from emitters of CDs. The electroluminescent LED with host–guest-doped dual emissive layers (EMLs) of [poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)-CDs] × 2 gives satisfactory electro-optical properties, with maximum luminance of 560 cd m−2 at 16 V, luminous efficiency of 0.183 cd A−1, power efficiency of 0.082 lm W−1, and external quantum efficiency of 0.25%, which are superior to the counterparts with single-EML of CDs, single-EML of [PVK-CDs], and triple-EMLs of [PVK-CDs] × 3. These enhanced properties are rationally ascribed to optimization of the device architecture, carrier balance improvement, and reduction in concentration-induced quenching. The electroluminescent LEDs also show color evolution from PVK to CDs, and/or to the PVK/CDs interface, with increasing driving voltages, owing to incomplete energy transfer from PVK to CDs. Highly efficient photoluminescent LEDs with 365- and 395-nm UV excitation are demonstrated. With a CDs : polyvinyl pyrrolidone ratio of 1 : 3, the 365-nm excited photoluminescent LED gives a maximum luminance of 512 347 cd m−2 with a power efficiency of 25.2 lm W−1, while the 395-nm excited photoluminescent device gives a maximum luminance of 670 954 cd m−2 with a power efficiency of 22.0 lm W−1, with both showing yellow emission. Our experiments provide some new ideas for broadening CD applications and advancing LEDs.

This article addresses the tensions that exist between the lives of city dwellers in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and those official attempts currently being launched by the Congolese government to create a new, albeit exclusionist, urban environment. During the campaign leading up to the 2006 presidential elections, President Kabila launched his “Cinq Chantiers” program, arguably the most ambitious project since the end of colonization in 1960 to overhaul the country and respond to its most pressing and urgent needs—or at least that of its elites—with regard to its urbanization. The article first situates the main phases of Kinshasa's expansion from the colonial era to the present day. It then turns to an analysis of the impact of the “Cinq Chantiers” program by examining two concrete cases: the expansion of fields in the Malebo Pool (looking at current modes of “informal” expansion of the urban space) and the development of a new urban project, the Cité du Fleuve (whose progressive uplift leaves out a large swath of the population). Are these examples of an African futurity, and for whom do they envision a new kind of urban life?

Because of its interaction with diverse proteins, heparin plays an important role in the regulation of various normal physiological and pathological processes. However, heparin overdose can induce some complications such as hemorrhages and thrombocytopenia. Therefore, it is critical to detect and quantify heparin accurately and quickly. Recently, conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs)-based fluorescent probes for heparin sensing have attracted considerable interests. Unfortunately, only few kinds of CPEs such as polyfluorenes derivatives, polythiophene derivatives, are reported and effective in fluorescent assays of heparin by now. This contribution aims to develop a new kind of polyelectrolytes based on poly(pyridinium salt)s derivatives for heparin detection with a light-up signature. An alternative conjugated poly(pyridinium salt)s ( P1 ) containing carbazole segments in the main chain was designed and synthesized, which are weakly emissive in solution but highly luminescent upon binding with heparin. Fluorescence light-up probes for heparin detection based on P1 were developed with high selectivity. P1 shows the similar fluorescence response toward heparin both in a broad pH range of about 3–12 and in the presence of various competing anions. Heparin quantification with a practical calibration range (0–14 µ M ) covering the whole therapeutic dosing levels (0.2–1.2 U mL −1 , 1.7–10 µ M ) is realized based on the polymer probe. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Visible light regulates electronic states to promote Fenton-like catalysis. • Dual single-atom CoMo-CN catalyst enhences micropollutant degradation and mineralization. • CoMo-CN/PMS/vis-light system achieves highly selective singlet oxygen generation. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) plays a critical role in oxidative transformations, yet achieving selective and rapid generation via peroxymonosulfate (PMS), a recently developed strategy, remains a nontrivial challenge. Here we demonstrate that visible light can function as an unconventional electronic-state regulator to control PMS activation toward 1 O 2 production. Using a dual single-atom CoMo catalyst anchored on graphitic carbon nitride, irradiation induces a reversible and opposite electronic-state modulation of Co and Mo through dynamic charge redistribution. This reconfiguration weakens the overly strong interaction between Co sites and oxygenated intermediates, thereby lowering the desorption barrier of 1 O 2 and increasing reaction flux along a disproportionation-like pathway. The system exhibits markedly enhanced PMS activation, accelerated pollutant degradation, deep mineralization, broad substrate applicability, and robust performance under complex water matrices and device-relevant conditions. Notably, charge-carrier recombination in transition-metal-modified semiconductors, typically detrimental to conventional photocatalysis, is instead advantageous for PMS activation. Our findings establish light as a mild and reversible regulator of metal electronic states, providing a general framework for catalytic behavior tuning beyond conventional photocatalysis. Synopsis Visible light acts to modulate electronic-state in a Co-Mo dual single-atom catalyst (Co reduced, Mo oxidized) to enhance selective 1 O 2 generation from peroxymonosulfate, enabling efficient removal of organic micropollutants from water. Psoriasis is a common chronic autoinflammatory skin disease characterized by excessive proliferation of keratinocytes and marked thickening of the stratum corneum. The condition is often recurrent and difficult to cure, and its development is closely associated with redox imbalance. Excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) at the lesional sites drives inflammatory responses. Additionally, the impaired epidermal barrier in psoriatic lesions renders the skin susceptible to secondary bacterial infections, which further exacerbates the disease. However, elevated ROS also possesses potential therapeutic effects by inducing keratinocyte apoptosis and inhibiting epidermal hyperplasia. Achieving controllable synergy between ROS generation and elimination remains a challenge. Here, we develop a light-controlled hydrogel for staged psoriasis treatment. The hydrogel integrates Chlorella for ROS scavenging and silver‑zinc oxide heterojunction nanoparticles (Ag@ZnO) for photocatalytic ROS generation, forming a composite system denoted as Chl-Ag@ZnO/C-P (Chlorella and Ag@ZnO‑loaded carboxymethyl chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel). In the initial dark phase, Chlorella scavenges pathological ROS to alleviate inflammation. Upon light irradiation, Ag@ZnO generates therapeutic ROS to induce keratinocyte apoptosis, while Chlorella simultaneously produces oxygen to enhance the photodynamic effect. This light-controlled bidirectional ROS regulation enables sequential anti-inflammatory and pro-apoptotic actions. In an IMQ-induced psoriasis mouse model, the hydrogel reduced epidermal thickness, decreased inflammatory cytokines (IL-17A, TNF-α), and restored ROS levels. The results demonstrate that this hydrogel system regulates oxidative stress in a staged manner for psoriasis treatment. Driven by the progress of sustainable development, environmental remediation and water treatment have become increasingly important. Photocatalysis, capable of degrading pollutants through light (especially visible light) irradiation, has received widespread research attention. Titanium dioxide(TiO2) is a promising photocatalyst, yet its practical use is limited by low visible-light utilization and rapid photogenerated charge recombination. Herein, an S-scheme TiO2-WO3(Tungsten trioxide) heterojunction was successfully fabricated; the difference in Fermi levels induces a built-in electric field directed from TiO2to WO3, which thus constructs the S-scheme heterojunction. The as-prepared heterojunction exhibits a markedly enhanced transient photocurrent density, with the carrier lifetime prolonged from 2.69 ns to 41.61 ns. Under visible-light irradiation, the heterojunction achieves a methylene blue (MB) removal efficiency of over 95% within 90 min, and its pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constantkreaches 0.032 min−1, which is approximately 16 times that of pure TiO2. Radical trapping experiments confirm that the dominant active species responsible for the catalytic process are photogenerated holes and the hydroxyl radicals derived therefrom.

In nature, many mysterious creatures are capable of defense and courtship via mimicry or color change. However, developing smart materials with the integration of conformation and color/transparency changes is an intriguing but challenging task. Herein, we report a versatile membrane with integrated visible transparency and shape manipulation. This membrane consists of thermo-irritated shape memory polymers and doped nonclose-packing nanoparticles (NPs). A reversible transparency change with shape deformation (from 63.7% to 2.1%) is exhibited due to the light scattering from internal cavitation between the NPs and polymers. Meanwhile, the shape of the film can be programmed and reversibly actuated via thermal-control bidirectional actuation from the semi-crystalline structure of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl)acetate (EVA). The complex film also shows excellent stability of light and shape modulation after the first cycle. The programmable reconfiguration and transparency-changing of this smart film highlight its great potential in temperature recording, light/thermal management, anti-counterfeiting and camouflage.

In this work, multicolor fluorescent carbon dots with red (R-CDs), yellow (Y-CDs), and blue (B-CDs) emissions were prepared by choosing proper aromatic precursors with different amounts of benzene rings through a simple solvothermal method. The characterization showed that the prepared carbon dots were spherical with a size under 10 nm, rich surface functional groups, and good stability. The emission wavelengths were located at 440, 530, and 580 nm under the excitation of 370 nm. The relative fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of R-CDs, Y-CDs, and B-CDs was 11%, 59%, and 33%, respectively. The related characterization demonstrated that the redshift in the photoluminescence was caused by the synergistic effect of the increasing graphitic nitrogen content, quantum size effect and surface oxidation state. By mixing the three prepared CDs into a PVA matrix, the transparent and flexible films produced relucent blue, yellow, and red emissions under 365 nm UV light, and solid-state quenching was effectively avoided. LEDs were fabricated by using B-CDs, Y-CDs, and R-CDs/PVA with a semiconductor chip. These CDs-based LEDs produced bright blue, yellow, and red light with CIE color coordinates of (0.16, 0.02), (0.38, 0.58), and (0.50, 0.49) were successfully manufactured utilizing the prepared blue, yellow and red multicolor carbon dots as the solid luminescent materials. The results showed that the synthesized CDs can be potentially applied in multi-color monitors as a promising candidate for light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This work blazes a novel trail for the controllable preparation of multicolor fluorescent carbon dots.

For decades, titanium has been the preferred material for dental implant fabrication. However, metallic ions and particles can cause hypersensitivity and aseptic loosening. The growing demand for metal-free dental restorations has also promoted the development of ceramic-based dental implants, such as silicon nitride . In this study, silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) dental implants were fabricated for biological engineering by photosensitive resin based digital light processing (DLP) technology, comparable to conventionally produced Si 3 N 4 ceramics. The flexural strength was (770 ± 35) MPa by the three-point bending method, and the fracture toughness was (13.3 ± 1.1) MPa · m 1/2 by the unilateral pre-cracked beam method. The elastic modulus measured by the bending method was (236 ± 10) GPa. To confirm whether the prepared Si 3 N 4 ceramics possessed good biocompatibility , in vitro biological experiments were performed with the fibroblast cell line L-929, and preferable cell proliferation and apoptosis were observed at the initial stages. Hemolysis test, oral mucous membrane irritation test, and acute systemic toxicity test (oral route) further confirmed that the Si 3 N 4 ceramics did not exhibit hemolysis reaction, oral mucosal stimulation, or systemic toxicity. The findings indicate that Si 3 N 4 dental implant restorations with personalized structures prepared by DLP technology have good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, which has great application potential in the future.

Functional carriers are appealing materials for pesticide formulations due to their superior role in improving pesticide utilization and reducing environmental pollution. Nevertheless, current carriers often involve tedious chemical synthesis and are time-consuming, which rise potential risks to environment and limit the large-scale industrialization. Here, taking advantage of inverse vulcanization reaction, a near-infrared responsive polysulfide carrier (SOCT) loading tebuconazole (Teb) is prepared in one-pot by using industrial waste sulfur (S 8 ), bio-based soybean oil (SO), and agricultural waste biochar as raw materials. The facile solvent- and surfactant-free processing and the low-cost of raw materials make SOCT be produced easily in kilogram-scale with a loading content of 34.1 wt%. The resulting SOCT exhibits good photothermal property upon irradiation of NIR light, and its release behavior is stable enough against different pH values and coexisting ions, implementing the controlled release of Teb. In vitro and in vivo experiments indicate that SOCT has excellent fungicidal activities against three pathogenic fungi and high biosafety for wheat seed germination and adult zebrafish. In addition, the carrier material is able to be degraded completely in the presence of alkaline or dithiothreitol molecules, due to the available dynamic ester and S-S bonds in polysulfides. These unique features endow our carriers with promising potentials in practical agro-productions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to use inverse vulcanization to prepare carrier materials for pesticides, which provides an effective approach for pesticide formulations with multi-functionality and sustainability.

Improving the dispersion of active sites simultaneous with the efficient harvest of photons is a key priority for photocatalysis. Crystalline silicon is abundant on Earth and has a suitable bandgap. However, silicon-based photocatalysts combined with metal elements has proved challenging due to silicon’s rigid crystal structure and high formation energy. Here we report a solid-state chemistry that produces crystalline silicon with well-dispersed Co atoms. Isolated Co sites in silicon are obtained through the in-situ formation of CoSi 2 intermediate nanodomains that function as seeds, leading to the production of Co-incorporating silicon nanocrystals at the CoSi 2 /Si epitaxial interface. As a result, cobalt-on-silicon single-atom catalysts achieve an external quantum efficiency of 10% for CO 2 -to-syngas conversion, with CO and H 2 yields of 4.7 mol g (Co) −1 and 4.4 mol g (Co) −1 , respectively. Moreover, the H 2 /CO ratio is tunable between 0.8 and 2. This photocatalyst also achieves a corresponding turnover number of 2 × 10 4 for visible-light-driven CO 2 reduction over 6 h, which is over ten times higher than previously reported single-atom photocatalysts.

Actuators are widely used in bionic devices and soft robots, among which invisible actuators have some unique applications, including performing secret missions. In this paper, highly visible transparent cellulose-based UV-absorbing films were prepared by dissolving cellulose raw materials using N -methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) and using ZnO nanoparticles as UV absorbers. Furthermore, transparent actuator was fabricated by growing highly transparent and hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film on regenerated cellulose (RC)-ZnO composite film. In addition to its sensitive response to Infrared (IR) light, the as-prepared actuator also shows a highly sensitive response to UV light, which is attributed to the strong absorption of UV light by ZnO NPs. Thanks to the drastic differences in adsorption capacity between the RC-ZnO and PTFE materials for water molecules, the asymmetrically- assembled actuator demonstrates extremely high sensitivity and excellent actuation performance, with a force density of 60.5, a maximum bending curvature of 3.0 cm −1 , and a response time of below 8 s. Bionic bug, smart door and the arm of excavator made from the actuator all exhibit sensitive responses to UV and IR lights.
