As the “mother of antioxidants”, glutathione (GSH) plays an important role in physiological functions. Rapid and accurate monitoring of GSH is of great significance for medicinal chemistry, food chemistry, and clinical medicine. We herein report a visual ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on MnO2 nanowires (MnO2 NWs) as an oxidant, quencher and recognition unit for the determination of GSH. The powerful ratiometric fluorescent probe was constructed by mixing thiamine (VB1) and rhodamine B (RhB) with the help of MnO2 NWs. MnO2 NWs could not only effectively quench the fluorescence of RhB due to the inner filter effect (IFE), but also oxidized non-fluorescent VB1 to blue fluorescent thiochrome (oxVB1). Upon interaction with GSH, the quenched RhB fluorescence could be rapidly restored through decomposition of MnO2 NWs into Mn2+, while the oxVB1 fluorescence decreased, showing an apparent color change from blue to red. The concentration of GSH was proportional to the ratio of fluorescence intensities of RhB and oxVB1, and the detection linear range was 1 to 10 000 μM with comparable selectivity. This ratio fluorescence sensor was successfully applied to GSH determination in whitening capsules and glutathione tablets with satisfactory results, and the sensor may be a potentially powerful tool for the detection of GSH.

In this work, a thorn ball-like three-dimensional (3D) heterostructured ZIF-67@α-MnO 2 catalyst consisting of ZIF-67 nanocages impaled by α-MnO 2 nanorods were robustly embedded in polyacrylonitrile nanofibers by electrospinning technique for highly efficient removal of low-molecular-weight pollutants (LMWPs, like dyes and antibiotics) from wastewater. Benefiting from abundant active sites and enhanced charge transfer abilities provided by ZIF-67@α-MnO 2 nanoparticles, the optimal ZIF-67@α-MnO 2 nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) showed a significant response towards acid fuchsin (AF) in terms of comparable adsorption capacity (2495 mg/g) and impressive catalytic activity (degradation degree of 99 % AF within 20 min). In addition, the resultant membranes possessed satisfactory versatile catalytic activity toward tetracycline (95.3 %), norfloxacin (98.4 %) and doxycycline hyclate (89.2 %). Besides, the resultant membranes had high permeability of 1302 L·m − 2 ·h − 1 driven by gravity and could efficiently treat 370.5 L·m − 2 AF (20 ppm), which was significantly higher than that of pure ZIF-67 NFMs (141.8 L·m − 2 ). The successful fabricating of such membrane with extraordinary adsorption and catalytic performance provided a promising approach for high-performance catalytic membranes.

The removal of toxic organic dyes from wastewater has received much attention from the perspective of environmental protection. Metal oxides see wide use in pollutant degradation due to their chemical stability, low cost, and broader light absorption spectrum. In this work, a Cu2O−centered nanocomposite Cu2O@SiO2/MnO2−PEG with an average diameter of 52 nm was prepared for the first time via a wet chemical route. In addition, highly dispersed MnO2 particles and PEG modification were realized simultaneously in one step, meanwhile, Cu2O was successfully protected under a dense SiO2 shell against oxidation. The obtained Cu2O@SiO2/MnO2−PEG showed excellent and stable photo−Fenton−like catalytic activity, attributed to integration of visible light−responsive Cu2O and H2O2−responsive MnO2. A degradation rate of 92.5% and a rate constant of 0.086 min−1 were obtained for methylene blue (MB) degradation in the presence of H2O2 under visible light for 30 min. Additionally, large amounts of •OH and 1O2 species played active roles in MB degradation. Considering the enhanced degradation of MB, this stable composite provides an efficient catalytic system for the selective removal of organic contaminants in wastewater.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted enormous attentions as new-generation energy storage devices due to their high theoretical energy density , high theoretical specific capacity, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, polysulfide shuttle and the growth of lithium dendrites significantly restrain the practical application of the Li-S batteries. In this work, a modified PP separator with nanoscale rod-like α-MnO 2 supported on carbon nanotubes was prepared. The α-MnO 2 @CNT modified separator can effectively inhibit the shuttle of polysulfide , enhance the electrochemical activity and accelerate the transfer of ions and electrons. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that α-MnO 2 @CNT can efficiently adsorb and catalyze the conversion of polysulfides. Due to these advantages, the α-MnO 2 @CNT-based Li-S battery delivers a initial discharge capacity of 1469 mAh g −1 at 0.05 C, 1039 mAh g −1 at 0.5 C and the capacity can still maintain 648 mAh g −1 over 500 cycles at 0.5 C (capacity decay rate of 0.075%). Expressly, the capacity decay rate is only 0.022% after 600 cycles at a high current density of 2 C. The excellent performance could be attributed to the α-MnO 2 @CNT modified separator not only accelerating the transmission of electrons but also effectively inhibiting the shuttle of polysulfides. Moreover, this work provides a better idea for practical applications of lithium-sulfur batteries in the future.

It is important to develop green and sustainable approaches to enhance electrochemical charge storage efficiencies. Herein, a two-step in-situ growth process was developed to fabricate carbon fiber paper-supported CeO 2 /MnO 2 composite (CeO 2 /MnO 2 —CFP) as a binder-free photo-electrode for the photo-assisted electrochemical charge storage. The formation of CeO 2 /MnO 2 type II heterojunction largely enhanced the separation efficiency of photo-generated charge carriers, resulting in a substantially enhanced photo-assisted charging capability of ∼20%. Furthermore, it retained a large part of its photo-enhanced capacitance (∼56%) in dark even after the illumination was off for 12 h, which could be attributed to its slow release of stored photo-generated electrons from its specific band structure to avoid their reaction with O 2 in dark. This study proposed the design principles for supercapacitors with both the photo-assisted charging capability and its long-lasting retainment in dark, which may be readily applied to other pseudocapacitive materials to better utilize solar energy.

Porous carbon materials have been widely used as electrode materials for supercapacitors . However, low specific capacitance severely hinders the practical application. To further improve the capacitance, this work reports a facile approach to prepare N, S co-doped hierarchical porous carbon/MnO 2 composites (NSPC/MnO 2 ). Acidified thiourea, acting as N and S source, is used to crosslink sodium alginate (SA) to give SA-based composite gels which are pyrolyzed to produce NSPC/MnO 2 . X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectra proved that manganese exists in the porous carbon in the form of MnO 2 . The obtained NSPC/MnO 2 exhibit hierarchical porous structure, remarkable mesoporous feature (the proportion of mesopores and macropores reached 32.69%), and high specific surface area of 1701 m 2 g −1 . Meanwhile, NSPC/MnO 2 show abundant heteroatom doping, i.e. Mn (2.05 at%), N (6.76 at%), and S (2.16 at%), which provided plenty of pseudocapacitance. The electrochemical tests show that NSPC/MnO 2 as electrode material can reach a high specific capacity of 281.1 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 (which is almost 1.85 times higher than the comparative sample), with good cycling stability (86.02% after 5000 cycles at 10 A g −1 ).

Malachite green (MG) is an organic dye compound that is frequently used as a fungicide and antiseptic in aquaculture. However, human or animal exposure to MG causes carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic effects. Herein, a novel fluorescent assay was designed for the detection of MG using manganese dioxide nanosheets (MnO 2 NS) as an energy acceptor to quench the fluorescence of branched poly(ethylenimine) carbon dots (BPEI-CDs) via Förster resonance energy transfer. When butyrylcholinesterase is introduced to form thiocholine in the presence of S-butyrylthiocholine iodide, MnO 2 NS can be recovered by thiocholine to Mn 2+ , resulting in restoration of the fluorescence of BPEI-CDs. Exploiting these changes in fluorescence intensity in the above system, a fluorescence probe was successfully developed for the quantitative detection of MG. Besides, this assay was applied to fish samples, verifying the high potential for practical application of the proposed sensor for the monitoring of MG in aquatic products.

In this paper, the SQDs@MnO2NS as the probe was applied to construct a novel “turn-on” fluorescent sensor for sensitive and selective detection of hydrazine (N2H4). Sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) and MnO2nanosheets (MnO2NS) were simply mixed, through the process of adsorption to prepare the architectures of SQDs@MnO2NS. The fluorescent emissions of SQDs@MnO2NS play a key role to indicate the state of the sensor. According to the inner filter effect (IFE) mechanism, the state of the sensor at the “off” position, or low emission, under the presence of MnO2NS, is which the ultraviolet and visible spectrum overlaps with the fluorescence emission spectrum of SQDs. Under the optimal conditions, the emission was gradually recovered with the addition of the N2H4, since the N2H4as a strong reductant could make the MnO2NS converted into Mn2+, the state of the sensor at the “on”. Meanwhile, the fluorescent sensor possesses good selectivity and high sensitivity, and the detection concentration of N2H4with a wide range from 0.1 µM to 10 mM with a detection limit of 0.072 µM. Furthermore, actual samples were successful in detecting certain implications, indicating that the fluorescent sensor possesses the potential application ability to monitor the N2H4in the water. Keywords:sulfur quantum dots;MnO2nanosheet;hydrazine;fluorescence probe

Exosomes, carrying specific molecular information of their parent cells, have been regarded as a kind of promising noninvasive biomarker for liquid biopsy. Plentiful fluorescence methods have been proposed for exosome assay. However, most of them are dependent on nucleic acid signal amplification strategies, which require complicated sequence design and experimental operation. Herein, a metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) biochip based on shell-isolated [email protected] 2 nanoparticle array was designed for simple and sensitive assay of exosomes. The designed method consists of only two parts: signal conversion and MEF amplification. The conversion of exosome signals to DNA signals was realized by means of chain displacement reaction. The subtle conversion effectively averts the effect of steric hindrance on MEF while amplifying the signal easily for the first time. The MEF biochip based on shell-isolated [email protected] 2 nanoparticle array achieves a second signal amplification in a simple way. Profiting from the two signal amplifications, this strategy displays high sensitivity toward exosomes with a detection limit of 4.5 × 10 3 particles μL −1 . Compared with the result without MEF, the sensitivity is enhanced about thirty times. As far as we know, this is the first attempt for exosome assay by using MEF strategy. In addition to the favorable fluorescence enhancement, both shell-isolated [email protected] 2 nanoparticles and [email protected] 2 nanoparticle array show excellent stability in buffer solutions, which is conducive to practical application. Moreover, the proposed method is able to distinguish breast cancer patients from healthy people, showing its potential for exosome-based liquid biopsy.

The wide applications of metal–organic framework (MOF) luminescent materials in the field of optics have attracted the general attention of researchers. Therefore, the development of simple and multifunctional MOF light-emitting platforms have become a research hotspot. The composites (MnO2@ZIF-8-luminol) were prepared by an in situ synthesis method and room-temperature covalent reaction. The composites and o-phenylenediamine (OPD) constitute a dual emission sensor for detecting alanine aminotransferase (ALT). OPD can be oxidized by MnO2 to 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) with yellow fluorescence emission, which inhibits the blue emission of luminol through fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The presence of tiopronin (TP) will destroy the FRET process, extinguishing the yellow fluorescence emission and restoring the blue fluorescence emission. The special effect between ALT and TP will further reverse the changes in the two fluorescent signals. Moreover, in the detection process, when the blue and yellow fluorescence energies in the system are within a certain range, a new white light emission will be generated, which causes the sensing of ALT to present ternary visualization. In addition, a high-security anti-counterfeiting platform is constructed by using the prepared materials and agarose hydrogels. The anti-counterfeiting platform can encrypt information on demand according to the luminous characteristics of different materials. This study not only provides a typical case of ternary visualization sensing by MOF-based materials but also develops a possible method for the construction of a MOF-based hydrogel anti-counterfeiting platform.

By virtue of their unique features, including simplicity, speed and portability, point-of-care testing (POCT) is critical for biochemical analysis in resource-limited environments. However, a single-signal readout cannot fulfil the requirements of accurate quantitative analysis due to interference from environmental factors. Hence, establishing a convenient multimodal assay method based on the concept of POCT detection is urgently desired. Herein, a novel multimode (i.e., photothermal, electrochemical, UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence) sensing strategy based on oxygen-vacancy-rich MnO 2 nanosheets decorated with methylene blue (MB) is unveiled for multifunctional detection of ascorbic acid (AA). In this multimode nanosensor (MnO 2 @MB NSs), MnO 2 nanosheets act as a photothermal agent and carrier for MB, showing an ultrasensitive response to AA, which enables photothermal signals turn “on” to “off”, and can be monitored by a thermometer. In the meantime, large amounts of MB are released to the detection solution, resulting in the absorbance, fluorescence and electrochemistry signals turning “off” to “on”. Thus, this nanosensor enables four-signal determination of AA in a supersensitive manner and exhibits a more reliable analysis result. Furthermore, MnO 2 @MB NSs can be even used to achieve point-of-care testing, greatly improving their application scope. Our strategy opens up a new avenue for the exploration of multistimulus-responsive nanosensors for convenient, stable, and accurate analysis of AA.

The present study investigated the mechanism of manganese ion (Mn(II))-activated periodate (PI) for rapid removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ). The Mn(II)/PI system showed excellent SDZ degradation results with 99.8 % degradation efficiency within 2 min at pH = 5.5. Mechanism study reveals that the degradation of SDZ in the Mn(II)/PI system takes place mainly through an electron transfer process. Mn(II) can be oxidized by PI to formed the in-situ MnO 2 , followed by the generation of MnO 2 -PI complex. Electrochemical methods have confirmed that the generated MnO 2 -PI complex significantly contributes to the degradation of pollutants. MnO 2 -PI mediates the transfer of electrons from SDZ to PI surface through surface vacancies, thereby achieving efficient degradation of pollutants. p -methoxyphenyl sulfone (PMSO) is used as a probe compound, and almost 90 % of PMSO is converted into PMSO 2 in the Mn(II)/PI/SDZ system, manifesting that excessive PI may oxidize active Mn(IV) to Mn(V). And the generated Mn(V) also contributes to the SDZ degradation. The SDZ degradation pathway is proposed and the transformation of iodine species is detected. The final iodine species in the system are iodate. The chloride culture experiment has confirmed that the production of organic iodine is very low, indicating no significant health risks. This study reveals mechanism of periodate-based process, providing theoretical and technical implementation guidelines of periodate in water treatment.
