Unravelling the mechanism of lanthanum-enhanced Pd-SSZ-13 zeolite against phosphorus-poisoning for passive NOx adsorber

Dongdong Chen,Siting Hu,Zhenzhen Jia,Huibin Liu,Bo Zhang,Shasha Liu,Wuwan Xiong,Xiang Li

The integration of lubricant oil additives or biofuels compels the Passive NO x Adsorber (PNA) within automotive exhaust after-treatment systems to withstand chemical poisoning from contaminants such as phosphorus (P). For the first time, lanthanum (La) has been employed to enhance the operational efficacy of Pd-loaded small-pore SSZ-13 zeolite (i.e., Pd-SSZ-13) in the presence of phosphorus species. Our findings reveal that La modification significantly bolsters the resilience of Pd-SSZ-13 against P-induced deactivation during the cold-start phase. Furthermore, we have elucidated a pronounced reduction in the degradation of active cationic Pd 2 + ions and Brønsted acid sites within the Pd-SSZ-13 framework upon the introduction of La. Notably, La not only exerts a stabilizing influence on the framework aluminum at the Brønsted acid sites but also effectively mitigates the interaction between the active Pd 2+ species and phosphorus, thereby preventing the formation of metaphosphate and its subsequent conversion into bulk PdO x aggregates. This research offers profound insights, particularly concerning the utilization of La to augment the resistance of Pd-SSZ-13 zeolite catalysts against poisoning by various chemical poisons (such as alkali metals or sulfur) and to enhance their high-temperature hydrothermal stability.

High-Precision Multigas Detection Based on Pd–Au Bimetallic Decorated ZnO Gas Sensors and PSO Feature Optimization

Mingzhi Jiao,Liangsong Duan,Jiade Zhang,Wei Peng,Chenyu Wen

To address the demands for efficient detection of combustible gas, such as hydrogen (H2), ethylene (C2H4), and acetylene (C2H2), in complex gas environments relevant to environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and smart homes, we developed zinc oxide (ZnO) gas sensors featuring bimetallic surface decoration with palladium (Pd) and gold (Au). Electron microscopy reveals the surface morphology of the sensing film and Pd/Au codecoration conformation, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy supports that codecoration modulates the distribution of surface oxygen species on ZnO. Gas sensing measurements demonstrate that Pd/Au decoration enhances both sensitivity and selectivity toward H2, C2H4, and C2H2. Specifically, a sensor decorated with 0.6 nm Pd and 2.3 nm Au exhibits a 178-fold increase in response to 160 ppm H2. Furthermore, by combining particle swarm optimization algorithm for feature selection with a support vector machine classifier, a recognition accuracy of 96.07% is achieved across seven different pure and mixture gas samples. This study presents a high-accuracy ZnO-based gas sensing platform optimized through both material engineering and machine learning algorithm, providing a reliable solution for real-world applications in industrial safety and environmental monitoring.

Formic-Acid In Situ Hydrogen Enables Programmable Ru–Pd–Pt/C Trimetallic Interfaces for Durable Acidic HER

Liangmeng Ni,Aiyue Huang,Xin Feng,Zhijia Liu

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis demands hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) cathodes that minimize precious-metal usage while remaining durable in strongly acidic media, yet improving Pt utilization and stability under reduced PGM loading remains challenging. Here, we develop a programmable nucleation pathway that uses in situ H* from formic acid (HCOOH) dehydrogenation at a Ru–Pd interface to gate reducing equivalents during nucleation. This enables site-confined Pt nucleation/immobilization and stabilizes a hydrogen-management interface for H* generation, relay, and recombination. The resulting Ru–Pd–Pt/C comprises uniformly dispersed ternary nanodomains (~2.46 nm). In 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , Ru–Pd–Pt/C delivers η 10 = 12.24 mV, an apparent Tafel slope of 29.9 mV dec −1 from a unified 20–50 mV fitting window, and a PGM mass activity of 6.58 A mg PGM −1 at η = 50 mV. More importantly, membrane electrode assembly tests under identical assembly conditions show lower cell voltages than commercial 40 wt% Pt/C over 1–4 A cm −2 and stable operation at 1 A cm −2 . Density functional theory calculation shows Ru/Pd neighbors tune Pt toward near-thermoneutral H adsorption (ΔG H* = −0.19 eV), consistent with density of states/d-band shifts and the improved apparent HER response. This formation-stage programming offers a transferable framework for durable, low-PGM HER cathodes in acidic water electrolysis.

Vacancy-stabilized Pt/Pd bimetallic sub-nanocluster interfaces for promoting the photoconversion pathway of CO2 to CH4

Gaoqing Cao,Zhimin Feng,Haitao Yuan,Shiyue Ren,Yue Lei,Lihong Hu,Yingnan Duan,Weizun Li,Zhurui Shen

Cd vacancies precisely anchor Pt/Pd sub-nanoclusters to boost interfacial electron transfer. • The vacancy-stabilized PtPd interface steers the CO 2 reduction pathway toward CH 4 . • DFT and in situ DRIFTS unveil stabilized intermediates (*CH 3 O) and suppressed CO desorption. • The optimized catalyst achieves a 119.5-fold enhancement in CH 4 yield over pristine CdS. Selective photoreduction of CO 2 to deeply hydrogenated products remains challenging due to the competitive formation of CO and insufficient surface hydrogenation capability. Herein, a vacancy-stabilized Pt/Pd sub-nanoclusters interface is constructed on a Cd-based semiconductor to preferentially facilitate surface reaction pathways toward CH 4 production. Cd vacancies are proposed to serve as preferential anchoring and electronic modulation centers, promoting the formation of Pt/Pd interfacial sites with strong metal support interactions, and facilitating electron transfer. Multiple characterization techniques confirm that the Pt/Pd sub-naoclusters interface is preferentially stabilized at vacancy-rich regions and exhibits pronounced electronic coupling. In situ DRIFTS reveals the emergence of key hydrogenated intermediates on the Pt/Pd interfacial surface, indicating a surface-mediated pathway shift from CO desorption to deep hydrogenation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirm enhanced CO 2 activation and stabilization of hydrogenation intermediates at the vacancy-coupled Pt/Pd sub-nanoclusters. Compared to pristine CdS and Cd 1-x S, the Pt/Pd-Cd 1-x S photocatalyst achieved 119.5-fold and 14.9-fold enhancements in CH 4 yield, respectively. Consequently, the engineered interfacial surface achieves a significantly enhanced methane selectivity during CO 2 photoreduction. This work highlights the important role of vacancy-mediated dual metal interfaces in promoting surface reaction pathways and provides new insights into the rational design of selective CO 2 photoreduction catalysts from a surface science perspective. Crystal structure modulation of ZrO2 support for enhanced CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over In–Pd/ZrO2 catalysts

Jiabao Lv,Hongman Sun,Guanying Liu,Fangzhen Wang,Xinru Qin,Shuzhuang Sun,Youhe Wang,Zifeng Yan

Mix-ZrO 2 supports have tunable monoclinic and tetragonal crystalline phases. • InPd/Mix-ZrO 2 –400 achieves 11.5% CO 2 conversion and 52% methanol selectivity. • The specific composition improves H 2 dissociation and CO 2 adsorption. • Methanol synthesis over InPd/Mix-ZrO 2 proceeds via the formate pathway. Upgrading CO 2 to methanol represents a pivotal strategy for achieving carbon neutrality, yet the development of highly efficient indium-based catalysts remains constrained by the urgent need for precise modulation of the support structure. Herein, we rationally design an In Pd catalyst supported on mixed crystal phase ZrO 2 (Mix-ZrO 2 ) with tunable monoclinic and tetragonal fractions. The optimized InPd/Mix-ZrO 2 –400 catalyst exhibits a CO 2 conversion of 11.5% and methanol selectivity of 52% at 270 °C, significantly outperforming other comparative catalysts, and retains stability over 50 h. Crucially, the enhanced performance is intrinsically attributed to the synergistic effect derived from the specific monoclinic-tetragonal phase ratio, which significantly boosts the dissociation of H 2 and CO 2 adsorption capacity. In-situ DRIFTS analysis confirms the reaction proceeds via the formate (HCOO*) pathway, where the optimized support facilitates the rapid hydrogenation of intermediates. This work elucidates the synergistic effect of crystal phase engineering in oxide supports, offering a robust pathway for designing advanced CO 2 hydrogenation catalysts.

Stabilizing Pd/In2O3 on Zeolite Silicalite-1: A Route to Durable and Selective CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol

Ziheng Li,Junxin Guo,Haoze Liu,Dule Huhe,Zhao Wang

Despite their high methanol selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation, In2O3-based catalysts still face limitations in CO2 conversion and long-term stability. This work addresses these challenges by designing a highly dispersed Pd/In2O3 catalyst supported on self-pillared silicalite-1 (SP-S-1) zeolite. The well-defined channels and abundant surface silanol groups of SP-S-1 effectively anchor and disperse In2O3 nanoparticles. This structure also spatially isolates Pd species, which prevents their sintering and inhibits the formation of inactive Pd–In alloys. Comprehensive characterization reveals that the strong metal-support interaction stabilizes oxygen vacancies and prevents over-reduction of In3+ species, which are crucial for CO2 activation and methanol selectivity. The optimized Pd/In2O3/SP-S-1 catalyst achieves a methanol space-time yield of 2.57 gMeOH·gIn+Pd-1·h-1 at 300 °C, approximately five times higher than that of the unsupported counterpart. More importantly, it demonstrates high stability, retaining 95% of its initial activity after 100 hours on stream, far outperforming the unsupported catalyst. This work highlights zeolite confinement as a versatile strategy for designing robust and efficient CO2-to-methanol catalysts.

Atomically dispersed Zr neighboring Pd sites in ceria for stabilization and enhanced performance in passive NOx adsorbers

Yang Liu,Jun Liu,Ming Xie,Jiang Deng,Dengsong Zhang

The design of Passive NO x Adsorbers (PNA) is essential for controlling cold-start emissions, yet Pd-ceria systems often encounter limitations in storage capacity and hydrothermal durability. In this work, we stabilize Pd by incorporating atomically dispersed Zr as neighboring atoms in ceria, establishing a framework for efficient and stable NO x capture. Zr doping in CeO 2 modifies the electronic environment by intensifying Pd-O hybridization and broadening electronic states near the Fermi level. These modifications, alongside emergent Pd-O-Zr interfacial sites, facilitate the dynamic reconfiguration of oxygen vacancies. This process promotes the oxidation of NO to NO 2 , enabling the optimized catalyst to yield a NO x storage capacity of 166.6 µmol/g cat —a value that surpasses the theoretical limit derived from Pd content. Structural stabilization further underpins these performance gains. Zr doping reinforces the CeO 2 lattice, enhancing the thermal resilience of the support. Simultaneously, the atomically dispersed Zr adjacent to Pd sites modulates metal-support interactions to an optimal state, effectively inhibiting Ostwald ripening, particle migration, and coalescence. These combined effects significantly improve hydrothermal stability under rigorous conditions. Our findings provide a mechanistic basis for the rational design of high-performance PNA and offer a viable pathway to mitigate cold-start NO x emissions in advanced after treatment systems.

Druggable β-catenin palmitoyl-switch coordinates immune evasion via immunogenic ferroptosis resistance and PD-L1-mediated immunosuppression

Qiang Zhang,Yue Kong,Yinglin Long,Xue Li,Liang Wang,Zhanhao Luo,Xiaoya Yang,Yanchun Xie,Quanwei Yu,Jing Yu,Dayi Liang,Wenhao Yuan,Xiaomin Cheng,Yaqi Su,Kaisa Cui,Guobao Tian,Zhen He,Ping Lan

Immune evasion remains a major challenge in colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment. Here, we identify that druggable β-catenin palmitoylation at cysteine 466 (C466) by ZDHHC5 acts as a competitive switch, displacing S-nitrosylation and coordinating an immunosuppressive program. The palmitoylated state stabilizes the β-catenin/TCF4 complex, which simultaneously upregulates SLC7A11 to suppress immunogenic ferroptosis, critical for CD8 + T cell priming, and PD-L1 to inhibit cytotoxic CD8 + T cells, thereby impairing both the initiation and effector phases of anti-tumor immunity. Clinically, ZDHHC5 expression predicts poor survival and resistance to anti-PD-L1 therapy. Silencing ZDHHC5 reduced tumor growth in patient-derived organoids and xenografts, while Zdhhc5 ablation in mice inhibited CRC progression by reversing immunogenic ferroptosis suppression and alleviating PD-L1-mediated T cell inhibition. Importantly, β-cat-oxazole, a first-in-class inhibitor, disrupts ZDHHC5-β-catenin binding, thereby restoring immunogenic ferroptosis and blocking PD-L1-mediated immunosuppression, ultimately suppressing tumor growth. Our findings establish targeting of this palmitoyl-switch as a precision strategy to overcome therapeutic resistance.

Interfacial electronic modulation of Pd/NiFe LDH heterostructure for selective electrooxidation of ethylene glycol to glycolic acid

Qiang Ren,Jiongliang Yuan,Donglin Song,Xinlu Xiong,Jianjun Wei,Xu Xiang

Pd/NiFe LDH heterointerfaces are constructed for electrooxidation of EG to GA. • Pd/NiFe LDH/NF reaches 100 mA cm −2 at 0.58 V vs. RHE for EGOR. • Pd/NiFe LDH heterointerface enhances OH – adsorption and weakens GA adsorption. The electrooxidation of ethylene glycol (EG) to glycolic acid (GA) is limited by poor OH – adsorption on Pd-based catalysts. In this work, a Pd/NiFe LDH/NF heterostructured catalyst was constructed by depositing Pd on NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) supported on nickel foam (NF) for efficient ethylene glycol electrooxidation (EGOR). The Pd/NiFe LDH heterointerface regulates the electronic structure of Pd sites, thereby enhancing the adsorption and activation of EG on Pd sites. And the heterointerface facilitates OH – adsorption, which promotes the conversion of C2 oxygenated intermediates toward GA. Moreover, Pd/NiFe LDH/NF shows relatively weak adsorption toward GA, which favors GA release from active sites and suppresses its further oxidation. Through this interfacial electronic modulation, Pd/NiFe LDH/NF delivers excellent EGOR performance, reaching 100 mA cm −2 at 0.58 V vs. RHE and achieving a maximum GA Faradaic efficiency of 95.7%. This work provides an interfacial design strategy for regulating EGOR over Pd-based catalysts and improving GA selectivity. PD-L1 vNAR promotes hair growth by modulating hair shaft elongation through activating the leptin-STAT3 signaling

Yang Minghan,Chen Jinlin,Huang Yi,Zheng Bowen,Cheng Yunying,Chen Jianming,Chen Ming

Programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) antibodies have achieved significant success in cancer immunotherapy. However, their roles beyond tumor treatment are not fully understood. In this study, we developed a shark-derived variable new antigen receptor targeting PD-L1, named 3P17, and investigated its role in promoting hair growth in C57BL/6J mice. The intravenous administration of 3P17 increased the proliferation of hair matrix cells, promoted hair shaft elongation, and accelerated hair follicle entry into anagen phage. Moreover, transcriptomic analysis showed that 3P17 increased leptin expression in mouse dorsal skin. Intravenous leptin phenocopied the hair shaft-elongating effect of 3P17. In contrast, the leptin receptor antagonist Allo-aca abrogated 3P17-induced hair shaft elongation. PD-L1, leptin, and phosphorylated STAT3 were co-expressed in hair matrix cells, and both 3P17 and leptin increased STAT3 phosphorylation in mouse dorsal skin. 3P17 also increased the expression of the proliferation-associated genes cyclin D1 and c-Myc in hair follicles. These results collectively indicated that the involvement of leptin-STAT3 signaling in the hair-growth-promoting effect of 3P17. To enhance drug delivery efficiency and patient compliance, we further evaluated the transdermal delivery of leptin using hollow sponge Haliclona sp. spicules (oSHS). oSHS-mediated delivery increased the proportion of leptin penetrating the skin to 43.69 ± 3.66% of the applied dose, representing a 3.28 ± 0.26-fold increase compared with leptin alone. Consistent with this enhanced uptake, oSHS increased leptin deposition into the viable epidermis and dermis, compared with microneedling and SHS, and promoted hair shaft elongation and hair growth in a mouse model of androgenetic alopecia. We propose oSHS-mediated transdermal delivery of leptin as a promising strategy to stimulate hair growth. Graphical abstract

Munc13-4 mediates tumor immune evasion by regulating the sorting and secretion of PD-L1 via exosomes

Liu Chuqi,Liu Dexiang,Zheng Xiang,Guan Jiali,Zhou Xinyan,Zhang Haikun,Wang Shen,Li Qiubai,Lu Gan,He Jun,Ma Cong

Tumor-derived exosomes carry programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), which binds programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) on T cells, suppressing immune responses locally and systemically. However, the mechanisms governing exosomal PD-L1 sorting and secretion remain elusive. Here, we identify Munc13-4 as a crucial regulator of this process. Deletion of Munc13-4 in breast tumors enhances T cell-mediated anti-tumor immunity, suppresses tumor growth, and improves the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors. Mechanistically, Munc13-4 collaborates with hepatocyte growth factor-regulated tyrosine kinase substrate (HRS), Rab27, and SNAREs to facilitate PD-L1 sorting and secretion via exosomes. Cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) analysis of the Munc13-4–Rab27a complex provide structural insights into exosome secretion. Importantly, PD-L1 sorting relies on a ternary complex composed of Munc13-4, PD-L1 and HRS, which is regulated by interferon gamma (IFNγ) signaling. A designed peptide that disrupts Munc13-4–PD-L1 interaction impedes PD-L1 sorting, enhances antitumor immunity, and suppresses tumor growth, highlighting the therapeutic potential of targeting this pathway.

Atomic-level design of Pt-Pd dual sites on TiO2: Overcoming single-atom limitations for enhanced photocatalysis

Qian Wang,Hanyu Shi,Sihan Fang,Chengchen Wang,Jiming Zeng,Guobin Yang,Jun Li,Giuseppe Mele,Chen Wang

Photocatalytic technology, as an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach for hydrogen production, demonstrates significant market potential, where bimetallic single-atom catalysts (SACs) demonstrate superior performance compared to monometallic counterparts through heteronuclear synergistic effects, establishing them as a critical research focus in modern catalytic science. In this investigation, TiO₂ nanosheets were employed as catalytic supports, with oxygen vacancy defects being strategically introduced via H₂-Ar atmosphere thermal reduction to immobilize both monometallic Pt and bimetallic Pt-Pd single atoms. The hydrogen evolution rates were quantified as 1956.45 μmol·h⁻¹ ·g cat ⁻¹ for Pt-loaded catalysts and 3522.65 μmol·h⁻¹ ·g cat ⁻¹ for Pt-Pd-loaded systems, corresponding to 72.3-fold and 130.2-fold improvements relative to unmodified TiO₂. This performance enhancement is attributed to optimized charge carrier separation facilitated by oxygen vacancies and the complementary electronic interactions between Pt and Pd atoms in bimetallic configurations, which collectively promote efficient surface reactions and hydrogen generation kinetics. The remarkable advantages of bimetallic systems in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution are demonstrated through these findings, with Density Functional Theory (DFT) revealing that Pd incorporation not only modulates charge density and band structure through its role as a cocatalyst but also actively participates in the hydrogen evolution reaction as catalytic sites. The formation of Ti-Pt-Ti and Ti-Pd-Ti configurations is observed to effectively reduce reaction energy barriers while suppressing competitive adsorption at isolated metal sites, resulting in enhanced catalytic performance. A strategy for designing efficient photocatalysts is established through this work, supported by mechanistic insights into energy barrier reduction and adsorption regulation, which provides critical theoretical foundations with both scientific and practical significance.
