Characterization of antibiofouling behaviors of PVDF membrane modified by quaternary ammonium compound – combined use of QCM-D, FCM, and CLSM

Wen Yue,Zhang Xingran,Chen Mei,Wu Zhichao,Wang Zhiwei

In this study, we systematically evaluated the antibiofouling behavior of quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) blended polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) combined with flow cytometry (FCM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) measurements. QCM-D tests showed that the introduction of QAC reduced bacterial attachment due to the biocidal functions of QAC. FCM indicated that cell integrity of the bacteria in the suspension flowing along QAC-modified membrane surfaces during the QCM-D test was severely affected. CLSM confirmed the significantly lower attachment of bacteria and higher dead/live cell ratio onto the surface of modified membranes after the washing step in QCM-D tests. Both FCM and CLSM results validated the antibacterial behavior of QAC-modified membranes by a contact-killing mechanism, which is in agreement with that of QCM-D tests. In addition, the bacterial cells accumulated on modified membrane surface exhibited higher reversibility compared to the control membrane, indicating ease of membrane cleaning. The results highlight that the combined use of QCM-D, FCM, and CLSM can comprehensively characterize the antibiofouling behavior of membranes.

AgNPs-thiols modified PVDF electrospun nanofiber membrane with a highly rough and pH-responsive surface for controllable oil/water separation

Ruilin Su,Liangzhong Li,Jiatong Kang,Xinyu Ma,Da Chen,Xiaoyun Fan,Yang Yu

To develop a novel membrane with controllable wettability in response to external stimuli for intelligent oil/water separation is always in urgent demand. In this study, a pH-responsive nanofibrous membrane was prepared through the step-by-step modification of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) electrospun nanofiber membrane , including mussel-inspired self-polymerization of polydopamine (PDA), immobilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and self-assembly of thiols. A rough membrane surface could be formed by the loading of AgNPs, and the subsequent introduction of HS(CH 2 ) 11 CH 3 /HS(CH 2 ) 10 COOH via metal-thiol coordination could endow the membrane with pH-responsive wettability. The surface of the membrane was able to quickly and reversely switch between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity through simply applying pH stimulus at pH 7 and 13, respectively. The membrane can be applied for separating multiphase oil/water mixtures, achieving separation efficiency of over 99.2% for light oil/water mixture and 96.5% for heavy oil/water mixture with a stable flux of around 2500 L/m 2 ·h for water and 11,000 L/m 2 ·h for oil over the 10-cycle separation process. Meanwhile, the membrane exhibited separation efficiency of higher than 99% for all the tested oil-in-water emulsions, and the water flux of the membrane could be effectively recovered by water rinsing. Moreover, the membrane demonstrated a good structural stability against rigorous mechanical abrasion. The pH-responsive membrane could be potentially applied for smart and energy-saving separation and recycle of oil or water from oily wastewater.

High-efficiency PVP-PVDF/MXene membranes for dyeing wastewater nanofiltration: A dual strategy of tuning nanochannels and enhancing electrostatic adsorption

Zhongyi Lv,Shixin Zhang,Jie Zhang,Hailin Yang,Liangjun Long,Xiaomin Tang,Huaili Zheng

Membranes were widely applied in the zero discharge of industrial wastewater. The improvement of nanofiltration efficiency was a persistent objective in industrial wastewater treatment. Efficient PVP-PVDF/MXene membranes were fabricated via adjusting the molecular weight of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and the dosage of MXene nanosheets. PVP-PVDF/MXene membrane predominantly owned a mesoporous structure with a key pore size distribution ranging from 2 to 5 nm. PVP influenced the abundant vertical and horizontal nanochannels of PVP-PVDF/MXene membranes. The lamellar structure of MXene nanosheets created tortuous pathways in the membrane and increased transport path length. They mutually determined water flux and rejection of dyes in various wastewater treatment. Methylene blue (MB) was mainly rejected through the size exclusion effect in nanochannels. MXene nanosheets supplied specific surface area, hydrophilicity and negatively charged functional groups. First-principles calculations revealed an adsorption energy of −7.89 eV, which was attributed to the strong interaction between MXene nanosheets and MB. MXene nanosheets promoted MB rejection. The optimal PVP-PVDF/MXene membrane prepared by 10,000 Da PVP and 0.008 g MXene achieved the highest water flux of 372.09 L·m −2 ·h −1 and MB rejection of 99.07% under ultra-low pressure condition of 0.02 bar. Flux recovery rate of PVP-PVDF/MXene membranes was 86.97% in MB treatment. They possessed excellent antifouling and recovery capacities. PVP-PVDF/MXene membrane was a potential candidate for application in wastewater treatment.

Mussel-inspired co-deposited L-DOPA/PEI/CNTs/PVDF membrane with hierarchically gradient pores for efficient oil/water emulsion separation

Bang Li,Juncai Ren,Jiayi Xie,Junfeng Wu,Yingchun Wang,Xiaogang Gu,Xiaoxian Hu,Xiang Guo,Zuwen Liu,Yanbin Yun,Chunli Li,Xiying Hao,Shasha Chen,Shiqiang Yin

The discharge of oily wastewater and industrial wastewater poses serious threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health, highlighting the urgent need for advanced antifouling membranes capable of efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation. Unlike conventional surface coating or single-component modification strategies, herein, we report a facile strategy to transform hydrophobic PVDF membranes into superhydrophilic ones with hierarchically gradient pores. This approach distinctively exploits mussel-inspired L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), rather than dopamine, in combination with polyethyleneimine (PEI) co-deposition and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanostructuring, forming a highly stable, multifunctional hydrophilic network that anchors CNTs while synergistically regulating pore size, pore distribution, and surface wettability. As a result, the average pore size decreased from 0.4075 μm to 0.2883 μm, enhancing selective permeability. The optimized L-DOPA/PEI/CNTs/PVDF membrane exhibited an ultrahigh pure water flux of 5367.9 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 and achieved over 99 % rejection of diverse surfactant-stabilized emulsions. Moreover, the membrane demonstrated excellent antifouling, consistently maintaining ≥98 % oil rejection over seven cycles, attributed to the formation of a compact hydration layer. By integrating bio-inspired adhesion chemistry with nanostructured pore-gradient engineering, this study provides a scalable and environmentally relevant route for fabricating high-performance separation membranes, offering strong potential for sustainable oily wastewater treatment and resource recovery applications.

Interface Modulation and Lithium Dendrite Suppression of LLTO via Synergistic KH560-PDA Co-Grafting for PVDF-HFP Composite Solid Electrolytes

Dingqin Wang,Zihao Fei,Deyi Zheng

Poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) polymer electrolytes suffer from low ionic strength and poor mechanical performance. Meanwhile, lithium lanthanum titanate (LLTO) fillers exhibit severe agglomeration and weak interfacial compatibility with the polymer matrix. To solve these problems, 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH560) at four different concentrations (1 wt%, 2 wt%, 3 wt%, 4 wt%) was loaded onto polydopamine-modified LLTO (PDA@LLTO). The modified materials were mixed with PVDF-HFP, and composite solid electrolytes were fabricated by the solution casting method. The epoxy groups in KH560 undergo ring-opening reactions with amino and hydroxyl moieties on PDA, while its trimethoxysilane groups crosslink with the polymer matrix, forming a robust “LLTO-PDA-KH560-polymer” interfacial structure. This dual modification markedly improves the dispersion of PDA@LLTO, strengthens interfacial adhesion, and enhances the mechanical and electrochemical properties of the composite electrolyte. All KH560 loadings suppress LLTO agglomeration, and the 3 wt% grafting ratio yields the optimal performance: a uniform and dense microstructure, a room-temperature ionic conductivity of 5.92 × 10 −4 S cm −1 , an electrochemical stability window extended to 4.88 V, and a tensile strength over 50% higher than the ungrafted sample. The modified electrolyte effectively inhibits lithium dendrite growth and enhances the cycling stability of solid-state batteries. This work demonstrates that KH560-PDA synergistic modification enables comprehensive performance optimization of composite electrolytes, offering a viable strategy for designing high-performance electrolytes for solid-state lithium-metal batteries.

Gradient-Structured PVDF Composite Foams With an Optimized “Capture-Loss-Intercept” Multilayer Design for High Absorption-Dominant Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Junpeng Ma,Xiao Li,Siyu Sun,Kang Liu,Jinghao Qian,Maxwell Fordjour Antwi-Afari,Hao-Yang Mi,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

The increasing density of wireless electronic devices has intensified electromagnetic interference (EMI), highlighting the limitations of conventional reflection-dominant shielding materials, in which a substantial fraction of incident electromagnetic energy is reflected back into the surrounding environment, potentially causing secondary electromagnetic interference. In this study, we propose a structurally optimized absorption-dominant gradient composite foam based on a “capture-loss-intercept” multilayer design. Multilayer PVDF-based foams were fabricated through a combined vacuum-assisted hot-pressing and supercritical CO 2 (scCO 2 ) foaming strategy, enabling precise control over pore morphology and filler distribution at low filler loadings (2.07 vol%). The resulting hierarchical structure promotes graded impedance matching, multiple internal reflections, dielectric and magnetic losses, and conduction pathways, yielding a synergistic attenuation effect. The optimized trilayer foam achieves an EMI shielding effectiveness of 55.73 dB, a high absorption coefficient (A = 0.9316), and a green shielding index (g s = 13.63), outperforming most previously reported polymer-based foams while maintaining a lightweight configuration. Approximately 99.99% of incident electromagnetic waves are effectively attenuated, demonstrating the structure's superior suppression of secondary reflection. This work provides an efficient and scalable design route for eco-friendly, absorption-dominant EMI shielding materials and offers strong potential for next-generation 5G/6G electronics, aerospace equipment, and lightweight electromagnetic management applications. Highlights A scalable “capture-loss-intercept” multilayer design for absorptive EMI shield. High EMI SE of 55.73 dB is achieved at low 2.07 vol% filler loading. A high green shielding index (gs = 13.63) for near-zero secondary pollution. scCO 2 foaming for lightweight, enhanced EMW dissipation & interface polarization.

Synergistic charge-size trimetallic design PVDF@Mn-co/Al-LDH for efficient lithium selectivity from high-Mg/Li ratio brine

Sehria Zia,Muhammad Kashif,Haojie Ge,Yafei Guo,Tianlong Deng

Mn-Co/Al-LDH enables efficient lithium capturing from Salt Lake Brines. • Fiber adsorbent exhibits excellent Li + selectivity, mechanical stability and durability. • PVDF@Mn-Co/Al-LDH design as fiber functionalization via wet spinning. • Dynamic uptake capacity of Li + 14.94 ± 1.23 mg·g −1 from Da-Qaidam Salt Lake. Lithium‑aluminum layered double hydroxides (LiAl-LDH) have been successfully used on a commercial scale to extract lithium from salt lake brine, their uncertain extraction procedure and inadequate Li + adsorption ability prevent further development of their uses. High selectivity of Li + has been achieved by the LDHs adsorption from high Mg/Li ratio salt lake brine, but zinc and titanium-based LDH adsorbents are unstable in acidic environments and pose environmental hazards. In this study, a novel trimetallic-based PVDF@Mn-Co/Al-LDH fibrous composite material with tunable properties is compared to bimetallic-LDHs. Density Functional Theory (DFT) is used to optimize the composite design and adsorption sites calculations. To approach the industrial application of Mn-Co/Al-LDH powder, it was further fabricated into porous nature fiber by wet spinning technology with cost effective PVDF form as strong binder with hydrophilicity exhibited Li + maximum adsorption capacity by 50% Mn-Co/Al-LDH fiber composition of 16.73 ± 1.02 mg.g −1 from Li + brine and the dynamic adsorption capacity is 14.94 ± 1.23 mg·g −1 with a 93% elution rate and 4–5% dissolution rate of Mn/Co ions. This synthetic fibrous composite adsorbent highlights a promising approach for evaluating LDH's potential in lithium extraction from rich‑lithium high Mg/Li ratio brine resources, due to its superior selectivity, adsorption/desorption performance and cyclic stability. Robust stability and improved dispersion of lanthanum-based metal-organic frameworks in PVDF membrane via covalent interaction for phosphate removal

Xiaoyu Liu,Bin Zhao,Jinming Xu,Hui Yang,Liang Wang

The practical application of lanthanum-based metal-organic frameworks (La-MOFs) with a high affinity for phosphate has been severely hindered by their powdery nature. To address this limitation, carboxyl-functionalized La-MOF (La-BTC) nanoparticles (NPs) were incorporated into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane to develop mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for phosphate removal. To enhance the dispersion and stability of NPs within the membrane matrix, the PVDF polymer was grafted with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to introduce -NH 2 groups. These -NH 2 groups subsequently formed covalent amide bonds with the -COOH groups of the La-BTC NPs via an amidation reaction. The grafting of PEI enlarged the finger-like pores of the membrane from approximately 20 μm to 75 μm, thereby reducing the diffusion resistance of phosphate within the membrane. The dispersion of La-BTC NPs in the PEI-PVDF matrix was also significantly improved due to their strong covalent interactions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verified that La-BTC exhibited stronger chemical bonding and more efficient charge transfer with PEI-PVDF compared to PVDF. Specifically, the modified system yielded a more negative binding energy of −23.44 eV and a narrower HOMO-LUMO gap of 3.86 eV. This strengthened interaction ensured the exceptional stability of the La-BTC NPs in the PEI-PVDF membrane. The resulting La-BTC/PEI-PVDF demonstrated faster phosphate adsorption and outstanding reusability, sustaining a removal efficiency of over 90% during five continuous regeneration cycles. This work presents an efficient method to incorporate MOF NPs into a membrane matrix, promoting the application potential of La-BTC in phosphate removal.

Dual resistance Janus PDA/PVDF membrane for removal and concentration of short- and long-chain perfluoroalkyl substances via membrane distillation

Siyoung Byun,Young Jin Seo,Chi Hoon Park,Sanghyun Jeong

Membrane distillation (MD) has been noted for concentrating and separating both short- and long-chain PFASs to highly concentrated levels, facilitating the effective destruction of PFASs. However, MD has critical limitations, including membrane wetting and fouling, which can be disrupted over long-term operation with high-quality permeate water. This study developed asymmetric Janus polydopamine (PDA)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with a hydrophilic-hydrophobic dual-layer structure to effectively separate PFASs without any wetting and fouling from highly concentrated feed water. A direct current MD experiment was conducted using 0.1 M NaCl containing 20 mg L −1 short-chain (perfluoropentanoic acid, PFPeA) and long-chain PFASs (perfluorooctanoic acid, PFOA). For short-chain PFPeA, the Janus membranes achieved outstanding salt rejection (~99.50%) and a low PFAS concentration (~6 μg L −1 ) in the permeate water, with stable and enhanced flux for long-term periods. Otherwise, for long-chain PFOA, despite highly concentrated PFAS levels, they demonstrated significant membrane anti-wetting and anti-fouling with high salt rejection (~99.40%), low PFAS concentration (approximately 3.5 μg L -1) , as well as stable flux. In addition, they exhibited high concentrations of PFASs in the feed solution (more than 1.60–1.89 times the initial feed water concentration). However, PFAS substances were found to penetrate PVDF membranes and cause fouling, as confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations, making it difficult to use for MD operation to remove and concentrate PFAS compounds. Consequently, the Janus membrane is expected to be applied in practical applications, especially for effectively concentrating and separating PFASs prior to the destruction of these compounds.

Achieving excellent energy storage performance and thermal stability simultaneously in PVDF-based nanocomposites by designing the bismuth layer-structured fillers

Liu Shuo,Ren Xiaojun,Zhang Yangyang,Feng Wuwei,Qi He,Luo Dengjie,Wang Lixia,Zhu Youjian,Bao Chunming,Li Wangyang,Zhang LinSen,Zhong Yi

Polymer-based dielectric materials exhibit several advantages, including high power density and rapid charge/discharge rates, making them widely applicable across various fields. However, their inherently low energy density restricts their applications in energy storage. To overcome this limitation, this study introduces novel bismuth-layered Bi 2 LaTiNbO 9 (BLTN) nanosheets as inorganic fillers, applied to the design and fabrication of PVDF-based energy storage films. The moderate dielectric constant of BLTN helps mitigate the uneven electric field distribution caused by dielectric mismatch between the high-dielectric ferroelectric filler and the polymer matrix. The [Bi 2 O 2 ] 2+ layer of BLTN functions as an insulating shell, inhibiting the movement of free electrons, thus reducing leakage current and conduction losses within the polymer matrix. The [LaTiNbO 7 ] 2− polarization layer contributes to the enhancement of polarization strength. Additionally, the higher bandgap ( E g ) of BLTN nanosheets further enhances the breakdown electric field within polymer-based materials. Consequently, the 1.5 wt% BLTN-P(VDF-HFP) nanocomposite film achieves an outstanding recoverable energy density of 25.1 J/cm 3 and energy efficiency of 78.6% at 580 kV/mm, significantly surpassing that of pure P(VDF-HFP). Furthermore, the 1.5 wt% BLTN-P(VDF-HFP) composite also demonstrates excellent thermal stability within the temperature range of 25–125 °C. These results suggest that bismuth-layered BLTN nanosheets serve as highly effective fillers for PVDF-based energy storage materials, offering greater design flexibility in the development of advanced flexible nanocomposite energy storage films.

Interfacial C─S Covalent Bonds Improving the Piezophotocatalytic Performance of 2D/2D g-C3N4/MoS2/PVDF Membrane for Tetracycline Degradation

Jinze Li,Jiahao Gan,Ming Sheng,Mengyang Xu,Yining Zhang,Xiang Liu,Pengwei Huo

The accumulation of antibiotic pollutants in aquatic environments poses threats to ecosystems. Photocatalysis is a promising approach for removing these pollutants, but conventional powder photocatalysts often suffer from difficult recovery and poor stability. Therefore, developing efficient, stable, and easily recoverable catalytic materials is important. In this study, 2D g-C 3 N 4 and MoS 2 were immobilized in a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane to prepare a g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 /PVDF piezo-photocatalytic composite membrane. Under the combined action of visible light and mechanical vibration, the membrane achieved a TC degradation efficiency of 76.54%, indicating a synergistic enhancement between piezoelectric polarization and photocatalysis. The formation of C─S bonds at the g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 interface enhanced electronic coupling between the two phases, promoting directional migration and spatial separation of photogenerated carriers. Meanwhile, the piezoelectric built-in electric field generated by PVDF under ultrasonic excitation further suppressed carrier recombination and accelerated interfacial charge transfer. Overall, the g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 /PVDF membrane shows good visible-light response, piezoelectric-assisted charge separation, mass transfer, recyclability, and stability, offering a new approach for antibiotic wastewater treatment and related membrane material design.
