Graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (g-CNQDs) with special structures have exhibited fascinating advantages over the common QDs. In this work, we report a novel Ru(bpy) 3 2+ /g-CNQDs electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system, and the effect of g-CNQDs on the ECL signal of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ was discussed. It was found that g-CNQDs containing in proposed ECL system played an important coreactant role in ECL signal enhancement of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ , which was proved by electrochemical, ultraviolet, and ECL experiments. Based on the quenching effect of catechol on the ECL signal of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ /g-CNQDs, a quenching-based ECL system was designed for catechol determination. The ECL sensing system demonstrated high sensitivity to catechol, with a linear range from 10 nM to 2 mM and a detection limit of 2.5 nM (S/N = 3). The sensor was adopted for catechol analysis in tea samples with satisfactory results.

In this work, ruthenium-based bimetallic catalysts of 1Ru-5 M/TiO 2 (M = Co, Ce, Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni) were prepared and evaluated in ethyl acetate oxidation. It was found that 1Ru-5Cu/TiO 2 gave the highest catalytic activity. The influence of CuO content and the preparation method on the catalytic activity was also studied. 1Ru-5Cu/TiO 2 showed great catalytic stability in the on-stream reaction test. The influence of H 2 O on the catalytic activity is presented. The bimetallic catalyst 1Ru-5Cu/TiO 2 showed better catalytic performance than the monometallic catalysts 1Ru/TiO 2 and 5Cu/TiO 2 . XRD, TEM, HAADF-STEM, H 2 -TPR, and XPS characterizations were conducted, and the synergistic effect between Ru and Cu was well presented. In situ FTIR studies were also conducted, and the reaction intermediates were revealed on the catalyst surface. The theoretical calculations suggested that ethyl acetate is more easily adsorbed on the CuO surface, while it reacts more easily on the RuO 2 surface . Accordingly, a reaction mechanism for the catalytic oxidation of ethyl acetate over a Ru-Cu bimetallic catalyst is proposed.

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) provides an effective method for converting the two main greenhouse gases to hydrogen and carbon monoxide. In this work, Co-CeO2 and CoM-CeO2 (M = Ru, Pd, Pt) catalysts prepared by electrospinning technology were used for DRM. Due to the excellent catalytic performance of Pt itself, the CoPt-CeO2 catalyst had the highest DRM catalytic performance at 850 °C, with a methane (CH4) conversion of 94.12%, and remained stable in 24 h stability testing with almost no carbon deposition. The surface properties of the samples were characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), temperature programmed reduction with H2 (H2-TPR), temperatureprogrammed desorption of CO2 (CO2-TPD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicated that part of the reason for the excellent catalytic performance exhibited by adding noble metals to the catalyst is closely related to the high dispersion of active metals. More importantly, the addition of noble metals significantly increased the medium and strong alkaline sites of the catalysts. The abundant oxygen vacancies in CeO2 itself and the increased alkaline sites of noble metals were conducive to the CO2 adsorption and dissociation and the oxidation of deposited carbon. Moreover, the addition of noble metals promoted the interaction between the active metal and support. The results of this study provide a reference for the design of high-performance Co-based DRM catalysts.

Tungsten carbide (WC x ) is a promising alternative to platinum catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, strong tungsten–hydrogen bond hinders hydrogen desorption while favoring H + reduction, thus limiting HER kinetics. Inspired by the phenomenon of hydrogen spillover in heterogeneous catalysis, a ruthenium (Ru) doped-driven activated hydrogen migration from WC x surface to Ru is reported. This approach achieved high activity with an ultralow overpotential of 9.0 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and superior stability at an industrial-grade current density of 1.0 A·cm −2 @ 1.65 V. In situ attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) and operando electrochemical impedance spectra revealed that this exceptional hydrogen production—which surpasses that of previously reported Pt/C catalysts—is attributable to the outstanding ability of WC x to induce water dissociation and hydrogen spillover from WC x to Ru surface. During the HER process, the rigid interfacial water network negatively affected the HER efficiency under alkaline conditions. The WC x sites disrupted this rigid structure, facilitating the contact between activated hydrogen (H * ) and WC x sites. Subsequently, H * migrates to Ru surface, where hydrogen recombination occurs to produce H 2 . This work paves a new avenue for the construction of coupled catalysts at the atomic scale to facilitate HER electrocatalysis.

Electrochemical ammonia synthesis (EAS) has emerged as a promising alternative to the traditional Haber–Bosch process. Indeed, N2 activation in room-temperature EAS systems remains a formidable challenge due to the strong NN bond. Solid oxide proton conductor EAS (PCEAS) electrolysis cells operating at intermediate temperatures offer a promising solution by utilizing both temperature and potential. In this process, the design of the cathode is crucial, requiring abundant proton and electron conduction channels, along with highly active catalysts. Herein, we design a cathode composed of ruthenium–La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ–BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3−δ (Ru–LSCF–BZCYYb) to meet the aforementioned requirements for PCEAS. LSCF and BZCYYb form a porous skeleton at the cathode, with Ru nanoparticles dispersed on the surface of this structure. This configuration features numerous triple-phase boundaries (TPBs), facilitating the contact between activated N2, H+, and e−, thereby promoting electrochemical ammonia synthesis. The impregnated Ru–LSCF–BZCYYb|BZCYYb|Ni–BZCYYb PCEAS electrolysis cell exhibited a maximum NH3 formation rate of 5.14 × 10−11 mol s−1 cm−2 and a maximum Faraday efficiency (FE) of 0.128% at 400 °C and −0.2 V with H2 and N2 as feedstock gases. Its yield surpassed those of the mixed Ru–LSCF–BZCYYb|BZCYYb|Ni–BZCYYb and the impregnated Ru–BZCYYb|BZCYYb|Ni–BZCYYb by a factor of 3.9 and 11.5, respectively. The authenticity of ammonia synthesis is confirmed using the 15N2 isotope combined with NMR detection. This study also achieved EAS using water as the hydrogen source. This approach would better meet the future demand for EAS by directly using N2 and H2O.

A sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor for the specific DNA sequence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) was developed based on the efficient quenching effect of the ferrocene cluster functionalized gold nanoparticles (Fc@AuNPs) on the ECL of electrodeposited silica@Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -chitosan-graphene oxide nanocomposite (SiO 2 @Ru−CS−GO). Graphene oxide (GO) can accelerate electron transfer rate, thus improving the ECL of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ on electrode surface. The molecular beacons (MB) was fixed to SiO 2 @Ru−CS−GO by glutaraldehyde (GA) using the Schiff reaction between amino groups of chitosan (CS) and MB. The ECL of SiO 2 @Ru−CS−GO was depressed greatly by the Fc@AuNPs labelled at the end of MB, then, a stronger ECL was observed when the distance between Fc@AuNPs and SiO 2 @Ru−CS−GO increased after the hybridization of target DNA with MB. Under optimum conditions, the restored ECL intensity increased linearly with the target DNA concentration in the range of 1.0×10 −16 ∼1.0×10 −10 mol ⋅ L −1 , and the limit of detection (LOD) is 1.4×10 −17 mol ⋅ L −1 . The proposed method exhibits acceptable stability and reproducibility. In general, the constructed HCV biosensor can be used for the sensitive detection of HCV in human serum, suggesting potential application prospects in bioanalysis.

Ru nanoparticles anchored on a heteroatom-doped carbon matrix enriched in pentagonal defects are prepared. • Synergy of pentagonal defects and heteroatoms tunes Ru electronic structure for HzOR and HER. • Ru on S-doped carbon enriched in pentagonal defects delivers superior HER and HzOR activity, surpassing Pt/C. • HzOR-assisted HER system needs only 0.485 V to reach 1 A cm −2 in a flow electrolyzer. Replacing the anodic oxygen evolution reaction with the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) enables energy-saving hydrogen production but demands efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts. Herein, an electrocatalyst based on ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru NPs) anchored on a uniquely engineered carbon matrix that integrates pentagonal defects and non-metal heteroatoms (Ru/PDXC, X = S, N or P) is designed. Through the synergistic coupling of pentagonal defects and non-metal heteroatoms, the electronic structure of Ru NPs is tailored, thereby enabling modulation of the adsorption energetics of key intermediates for both HzOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The synthesized Ru/PDSC catalyst delivers outstanding bifunctional activity, requiring a working potential of −70 mV for HzOR and an overpotential of 17 mV for HER to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , outperforming commercial Pt/C. In a two-electrode HzOR-assisted HER system, a low cell voltage of 28 mV is sufficient to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the flow electrolyzer yields an industrially relevant current density of 1 A cm −2 , requiring a cell voltage of just 0.485 V. This study contributes a fundamental insight for the design and synthesis of advanced bifunctional Ru-based electrocatalysts by engineering the pentagonal defects and non-metal heteroatoms of a carbon matrix. A multifunctional core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @Ru@Pt nanozyme was synthesized. • A cascade multimodal LFIA for sensitive and reliable detection of β-CG was developed. • A 151-fold sensitivity improvement was achieved through cascade amplification. • Four detection modes provided flexible readout and cross-validation. Traditional lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs) suffer from limited sensitivity and insufficient reliability, which restrict their practical application. To address these challenges, we synthesized a multifunctional core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @Ru@Pt nanozyme with integrated magnetic, optical, catalytic, and photothermal properties. This nanozyme enables a three-step cascade that enhances sensitivity through sequential magnetic enrichment, catalytic amplification, and photothermal amplification. In addition, four detection modes (direct colorimetric, magnetic-enriched colorimetric, catalytic colorimetric, and photothermal) provide flexible readout and cross-validation to improve reliability. Using a specific phage-displayed nanobody as the recognition element, we developed a Fe 3 O 4 @Ru@Pt-based cascade multimodal LFIA for β-conglycinin detection. The photothermal mode achieved a limit of detection as low as 2.02 pg mL −1 , representing a 151-fold improvement over the direct colorimetric mode. The assay also exhibited excellent specificity and satisfactory accuracy in spiked real samples, with recoveries of 83.21%–114.72%. This multifunctional nanozyme-mediated cascade multimodal platform substantially improves both sensitivity and reliability, offering a promising and practical tool for point-of-care testing applications.

Determination of the solvent polarity is important across various scientific and industrial fields. Classic empirical parameters for evaluating solvent polarity, such as Rohrschneider–Snyder parameters (P′), Reichardt’s ET(30), Kamlet–Taft parameters, dielectric constant (ε) measurement, and Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) often suffer from complicated instrumentation and measurement operation, which seriously limits their applications in real-time and fast determination and selection of unknown solvent polarity. In this work, we utilize recently emerging perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) with extremely high fluorescence quantum yield, high sensitivity to solvent polarity, and facile preparation and surface engineering to to develop a visualized and disposable solvent polarity sensor based on dual-fluorescent PQDs@SiO2/Ru(bpy)32+@SiO2 (PQDs@SiO2/Ru(II)@SiO2) nanocomposites. Among the nanocomposites, the components of PQDs@SiO2 are stable in nonpolar solvents but not stable in polar solvents due to degradation. Meanwhile, the component Ru(bpy)32+ is stable in both polar and nonpolar solvents, giving a constant red background fluorescence. Therefore, when inserting the glass slide loaded with PQDs@SiO2/Ru(II)@SiO2 nanocomposites into a nonpolar solvent, it retainss green light emission since the fluorescence quantum yield of PQDs is much larger than that of Ru(bpy)32+. In contrast, when the glass slide contacts with polar solvents, its fluorescence color will change from green to yellow, then orange, and finally to red due to the instability of PQDs in this case. The complete color change time from initial green to final red (tccc) was proposed as a new type of solvent polarity parameter. This work not only provides an empirical parameter for evaluating solvent polarity but also opens up an avenue for detecting solvent polarity using functional nanomaterial.

A portable, high-throughput visual sensing platform was constructed for the effective detection of catechol (CA), on the basis of the single-electrode electrochemistry system (SEES) and a self-enhanced electrochemiluminescence (SEECL) material, namely Au-Ru@Zn metal-organic framework (MOF). It was found that Ru(bpy) 3 2+ and oxalate co‑encapsulated within the Ru@Zn MOF generated a SEECL signal. To further amplify the SEECL response, tripropylamine (TPA) was introduced as an exogenous co-reactant, synergizing with endogenous oxalate to establish dual ECL pathways. The oxidation product of CA, semiquinone radicals, is proposed to effectively quenched photoexcited Ru(bpy) 3 2+ * species and competitively consume the precursor Ru(bpy) 3 3+ by reducing it to Ru(bpy) 3 2+ , thereby causing the ECL signals of Au-Ru@Zn MOF to be significantly quenched. Under optimal experimental conditions, the Au-Ru@Zn MOF-modified SEES exhibited excellent ECL response performance toward CA, with a linear detection range from 1.0 × 10⁻ 9 to 5.0 × 10⁻ 4 mol·L⁻ 1 and a detection limit as low as 7.94 × 10⁻ 10 mol·L⁻ 1 (S/ N = 3). Additionally, the proposed SEES successfully detected CA in tea with the recoveries ranging from 98.8% to 101.0%. This work offers a novel approach for the sensitive detection of CA and has significant application possibilities in the realm of food safety monitoring with the benefits of high throughput, portability, and low cost. To enable the large-scale implementation of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolytes, obtaining highly active and economical electrocatalysts remains a crucial requirement. In this work, ultrafine Ni–Ru alloy nanoclusters and atomically dispersed Ru–N4 and Ni–N4 sites were successfully anchored on nitrogen-doped hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (NHMCS) via a microwave-assisted solvothermal method within 15 min, yielding Ni–Ru bimetallic catalysts (NixRuy/NHMCS). In 1.0 M KOH, the NiRu4/NHMCS-900 catalyst delivered outstanding HER performance, characterized by a record-low overpotential of 9.3 mV at 10 mA cm–2. This value is notably lower than that of the commercial Pt/C catalysts. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrated remarkable stability over 100,000 cycles and sustained performance during 120 h of continuous operation. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), in situ Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations collectively demonstrate that the outstanding HER activity is governed by the synergy of Ni–Ru bimetallic sites and the reverse hydrogen spillover effect (HSE) between the NHMCS and metal clusters. Specifically, nitrogen sites in NHMCS initially adsorb H2O molecules, which then dissociate into N–H intermediates. The resulting adsorbed hydrogen atoms (Had) migrate to adjacent Ru sites, forming Ru–H intermediates that subsequently evolve into H2 gas. Simultaneously, Ni sites interact with hydroxyl groups to form Ni–OH species, modulating the electronic structure and stabilizing key intermediates. Additionally, the porous NHMCS architecture and strong metal–support interactions (MSI) prevent the aggregation of Ni–Ru clusters, further enhancing structural integrity. This study offers new insights into designing high-performance HER catalysts by harnessing reverse hydrogen spillover and bimetallic synergy.

Producing chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass is important in view of the huge availability of biomass and positive environmental significance by reducing carbon emission due to fast carbon cycle during biomass growth and applications. Here, we prepared zirconium based solid acids for hydrolytic hydrogenation of raw lignocelluloses to coproduce C5/C6 sugar alcohols (the important platform for downstream chemicals and fuel production) as combined with commercial Ru/C. Among these solid acids, the amorphous zirconium phosphate (ZrP) presented the largest acidic sites, with medium and strong acidity as the majority, showing the highest goal sugar alcohols yield of 70% at optimal reaction conditions. During pennisetum transformation, this combined catalyst was reusable despite the activity of the second run being lower than the initial one, and the activity could be recovered by recalcination of spent ZrP. The primary structure of surviving lignin remained after cellulose and hemicellulose were converted, showing the significance for fractional biomass applications if considering the further transformation of lignin.
