Reactive molten salt synthesis of natural graphite flakes decorated with SnO2 nanorods as high performance, low cost anode material for lithium ion batteries

Zhen-Kun He,Qiang Sun,Kaiyu Xie,Pai Lu,Zhongning Shi,Ali Reza Kamali

The fabrication of hybrid materials , such as SnO 2 -C, applicable in advanced energy storage systems, often suffers from lack of simplicity, scalability, cost effectiveness and/or sustainability. Therefore, the development of simpler and more efficient technologies for the sustainable production of energy materials with decent performance is highly desirable. In the current investigation, a hybrid nanostructured powder comprising of natural graphite flakes decorated with SnO 2 single crystalline nanorods (NG-SnO 2 ) was synthesized by a facile, rapid and cost effective one-step molten salt method, and characterized by a variety of techniques including X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy , thermal analysis and electron microscopy . A perfect connection was identified between SnO 2 nanorods and few-layers graphite on the surface of flakes. This hybrid material exhibited an excellent electrochemical performance as the anode material for Li-ion batteries, delivering a reversible capacity of 495 mAhg −1 after 500 cycles. The few-layered graphite substrate could successfully promote the electron transfer kinetics and also buffers the mechanical stress caused by the lithiation-delithiation of perfectly attached SnO 2 nanorods during the battery cycling. The molten salt process discussed here provides a cost-effective and scalable strategy for rapid preparation of the hybrid nanostructured anode material, utilizing the low cost and abundant natural graphite.

High-Performance Planar Perovskite Solar Cells with a Reduced Energy Barrier and Enhanced Charge Extraction via a Na2WO4-Modified SnO2 Electron Transport Layer

Bo Xiao,Xin Li,Zijun Yi,Yubo Luo,Qinghui Jiang,Junyou Yang

Tin oxide (SnO2) has been commonly used as an electron transport layer (ETL) in planar perovskite solar cells (p-PSCs) because it can be prepared by a low-temperature solution-processed method. However, the device performance has been restricted due to the limited electrical performance of SnO2 and its mismatched energy level alignment with the perovskite absorber. Considering these problems, sodium tungstate (Na2WO4) has been employed to modify the SnO2 ETL. The conduction band minimum of SnO2 increases and the defects at the ETL/perovskite interface decrease by the modification of the SnO2 ETL with Na2WO4, thus reducing the energy barrier between the ETL and perovskite. In addition, the electron extraction ability has been enhanced and the interface recombination between the ETL and perovskite has also been inhibited. As a result, the photovoltaic performance of p-PSCs based on the modified ETL has been improved, and a champion power conversion efficiency of 21.16% has been achieved compared with the control device of 17.30% with an open circuit voltage increased from 1.075 to 1.162 V.

Synthesis of chitosan/SnO2 nanocomposites by chemical precipitation for enhanced visible light photocatalytic degradation efficiency of congo red and rhodamine-B dye molecules

Muthuchamy Maruthupandy,Thillaichidambaram Muneeswaran,Gnanasekaran Chackaravarthi,Thirumalaiswamy Vennila,Muthusamy Anand,Wan-Seob Cho,Franck Quero

Tin oxide (SnO 2 ) nanoparticles (NPs) as well as SnO 2 /chitosan(CS) nanocomposites (NCs) were successfully synthesized by a simple chemical precipitation technique and their photocatalytic degradation ability against congo red (CR) and Rhodamine-B (Rh-B) were subsequently evaluated. The crystallinity and surface morphology of the materials were evaluated using X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The TEM images revealed that nanosized SnO 2 NPs were successfully obtained and were homogeneously distributed within the CS matrix. The CS/SnO 2 NCs were exposed to Rh-B dye molecules, resulting in 95% degradation within 60 min, which was significantly higher than for SnO 2 NPs. On the other hand, CS/SnO 2 NCs were found to degrade 98% of CR dye molecules within 40 min of visible light irradiation, which was also significantly shorter than for SnO 2 NPs. The CR dye molecules experienced significantly better levels of photodegradation parameters than Rh-B. The present study demonstrates the potential of CS/SnO 2 NCs in the area of environmental remediation of organic dye-based water pollutants.

Synergistic strategy of rubidium chloride regulated SnO2 and 4-tert-butyl-benzylammonium iodide passivated MAxFA1-xPbI3 for efficient mixed-cation perovskite solar cells

Jia Sun,Yinsheng Gu,Yingwei Lu,Juntao Hu,Tao Chen,Changfei Zhu,Paifeng Luo

Nowadays, the MA-FA mixed-cation perovskite solar cells (PSCs), demonstrating much higher stability than that of single-cation MAPbI 3 or FAPbI 3 , are still encountering a low-efficiency issue. The main reason is that there existing a lot of defects in SnO 2 electron transport layers (ETLs) and perovskite absorbers. Herein, we develop a synergistic strategy of Rubidium Chloride (RbCl) doping and 4- tert -butylbenzylammonium iodide (tBBAI) passivation to fabricate high-performance MA x FA 1-x PbI 3 mixed-cation PSCs. The alkali halide RbCl is first selected as a novel doping additive to regulate the film properties of SnO 2 and perovskites. Research shows that the negative Cl - ions can combine with uncoordinated Sn 4+ ions due to their strong bonding ability, which can passivate the oxygen-vacancy-related defects and enhance the charge transport of SnO 2 ETLs. Meanwhile, the doped Rb + and Cl - ions may diffuse into perovskite lattices to promote grain growth and reduce the defects of perovskites. Besides, we employ an organic halide salt tBBAI to passivate perovskites and suppress surface defects. Results of deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) indicate that SnO 2 and SnO 2 -RbCl based devices have deeper hole traps and large trap densities (Δ E  = 0.92 eV, N T  = 1.10 × 10 16 cm −3 ; ΔE  = 0.93 eV, N T  = 2.16 × 10 15 cm −3 ); while tBBAI-treated SnO 2 -RbCl-based devices own a shallower hole trap and a smaller trap density ( ΔE  = 0.72 eV, N T  = 2.44 × 10 13 cm −3 ); and the corresponding I Pb and I (MA/FA) antisite defeats are also identified. Therefore, our synergistic strategy is effectively able to reduce the defect density and suppress the non-radiative recombination. Consequently, the best-performance MA 0.85 FA 0.15 PbI 3 PSCs achieve an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.54% with a large open circuit voltage ( V oc ) of 1.16 V, which are by far the highest values of MA 0.85 FA 0.15 PbI 3 mixed-cation PSCs.

A S-scheme heterojunction Fe-doped TiO2/SnO2 with rich oxygen vacancies for photo-Fenton degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light illumination

Vu Hoang Huong,Van-Can Nguyen,Minh Ngoc Ha,Duy Van Pham,Thanh Binh Nguyen,Yuan-Ron Ma,An Bang Ngac,Trinh Thi Loan

The photo-Fenton process serves as a highly efficient approach for removing contaminants from wastewater. In this study, we developed a Fe-doped TiO 2 /SnO 2 heterojunction catalyst to enhance the efficiency of photo-Fenton catalytic activity under visible light . To investigate the physical properties of the catalysts, various characterization techniques were utilized, including XRD , SEM, TEM , HR-TEM, UV-VIS, PL , and XPS . The 7% mol Fe-doped TiO 2 /SnO 2 -OVs (TFS-7) heterostructure exhibited the highest rate constant of 17.03 × 10 −3 min −1 ; 8.4 and 2.1 times higher than the individual components. This enhanced performance is mainly attributed to the rapid migration of photoinduced electrons to Fe 3+ and the subsequent generation of Fe 2+ , which improved electron transfer capacity and facilitated the rapid production of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) through the reaction between Fe 2+ and H 2 O 2 . We proposed a S-scheme mechanism for the Fe-doped TiO 2 /SnO 2 -OVs catalyst based on the analysis of reactive species trapping experiments, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and density functional theory (DFT). These findings offer not only a straightforward approach for synthesizing highly active photocatalysts for the degradation of RhB dye, but also a framework for the construction of heterostructure photocatalysts.

Preparation of a Praseodymium Modified Ti/SnO2-Sb/PbO2 Electrode and its Application in the Anodic Degradation of the Azo Dye Acid Black 194

Zhiqiao He,Chengxiang Huang,Qiong Wang,Zhe Jiang,Jianmeng Chen,Shuang Song

A series of praseodymium modified Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 (Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 -Pr) electrodes were synthesized by doping PbO 2 with praseodymium and the effect of Pr doping on the electrode catalytic activity toward the anodic oxidation of the model dye C.I. Acid Black 194 (AB-194) was examined in aqueous solution. The electrocatalytic activity of a Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 electrode can be greatly improved by adding an appropriate amount of Pr into the PbO 2 layer. Accelerated life tests indicate that Pr doping also dramatically improves the stability of the Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 anode. The introduction of Pr enhanced the formation of oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups, resulting in better activity and stability of the Ti/SnO 2 -Sb/PbO 2 -Pr electrode. A possible degradation pathway of AB-194 during the anodic oxidation process is proposed based on hydroxyl radical attack of the organic reactant.

Simultaneous mobility reduction and conductivity enhancement of SnO2 nanoparticles via fluorine doping for balanced charge transport in high-performance quantum dot light-emitting diodes

Xin Su,Chen Lin,Mengxin Liu,Xinan Shi,Daocheng Pan

Quantum-sized SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as a promising electron transport layer (ETL) in solution-processed quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) due to their high chemical stability and excellent optical transparency. However, the intrinsically high electron mobility of SnO2 tends to cause excessive electron injection and charge transport imbalance, ultimately compromising the efficiency and operational stability of QLED devices. To address this issue, we propose an n-type fluorine-doping strategy for SnO2 NPs that simultaneously tailors both electron mobility and electrical conductivity. This approach effectively lowers the electron mobility of the SnO2 NPs to better match the hole mobility of the hole transport layer (HTL), while simultaneously enhancing electrical conductivity to promote efficient electron injection. The resulting more balanced charge transport within the QLED leads to significantly improved overall device performance. As a result, the red-emitting inverted QLED device based on 10 at% F-doped SnO2 NPs exhibits outstanding performance, achieving a maximum luminance of 129 117 cd m−2, a peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 16.55% and a turn-on voltage (Von) of 2.4 V.

Tin-Based Metal–Organic Framework Derived Sn-SnO2/Sn2O3@C With a Heterogeneous Structure as an Advanced Anode for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Shikai Liu,Xiaoyuan Sang,Eswaramoorthi Thiruganasambandam,Huimin Jiang,Liyan Zhou,Ziping Jin,Jianjian Lin

Tin-based oxides are recognized as promising high-capacity anode materials for lithium-ion batteries owing to their high theoretical specific capacity and favorable operating voltage. Nevertheless, their widespread practical implementation has been hindered by substantial volume fluctuations during lithiation/delithiation processes, as well as inferior rate capability. In this work, we synthesized a tin-based metal–organic framework (Sn-MOF) precursor at room temperature and subsequently transformed it via annealing treatment into a heterostructure Sn-SnO 2 /Sn 2 O 3 @C composites. This self-sacrificing MOF-derived strategy yields a material featuring both a conductive carbon coating and an integrated SnO 2 /Sn 2 O 3 heterostructure, which collectively enhance electronic conductivity and mitigate volume expansion. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between the carbon matrix and the heterointerface, the anode material exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that the anode material presents a high reversible capacity (1242 mAh g −1 at 0.1C), and its first-cycle coulombic efficiency reached 80.4%, a remarkable rate capability (501 mAh g −1 at 5C), and a high lithium-ion diffusion coefficient. Furthermore, the electrode retains a capacity of 800 mAh g −1 after 800 cycles at 500 mA g −1 . This work establishes an effective heterointerface engineering approach and offers a viable design strategy for fabricating Sn-based anode materials that combine long-term cycling stability with high-rate capability. Graphical We synthesized a tin-based metal–organic framework (Sn-MOF) via a room-temperature strategy and further converted it into an Sn-SnO 2 /Sn 2 O 3 @C heterostructure through MOF pyrolysis. The synergistic effect between the MOF-derived carbon framework and the SnO 2 /Sn 2 O 3 heterostructure contributes to the superior electrochemical performance. The as-prepared material exhibits a high reversible capacity of 1242 mAh g −1 at 0.1C and excellent cycling stability.

Tuning charge transportation balance in quantum dot light emitting diodes by decreasing the mobility and conductivity of In-doped SnO2 nanocrystal electron transport layers

Chen Lin,Mengxin Liu,Yuhui Liu,Xinan Shi,Daocheng Pan

The use of quantum sized SnO2 nanocrystals as the electron transportation layer (ETL) in quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) has been demonstrated to be an effective method for improving device stability and eliminating the positive aging effect. However, compared to the commonly used 4,4′-bis(N-carbazolyl)-1,1′-biphenyl (CBP) hole transportation layer (HTL), the quantum sized SnO2 nanocrystals usually possess a higher electron mobility and a higher conductivity, which results in the charge transport imbalance in QLEDs. Herein, In-doped SnO2 quantum-sized nanocrystals are synthesized by the ligand-assisted solvothermal method. It was found that the mobility and conductivity of N-type In-doped SnO2 nanocrystals gradually decrease with increasing In doping concentration owing to the substitution of In3+ ions for Sn4+ ions as the electron acceptors. As a result, the charge transportation balance in QLEDs is realized by suppressing the electron transportation ability of In-doped SnO2 nanocrystals. A red inverted QLED based on a 5 wt% In-doped SnO2 nanocrystal ETL exhibits a maximum luminance of 68 033 cd m−2, a current efficiency (CE) of 26.52 cd A−1 and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 18.94%. These results reveal that In-doped SnO2 nanocrystals are a promising candidate for fabricating high-performance and stable QLEDs.

Heterovalent State and Oxygen Vacancy Defect Structure-Associated V/S Co-Doped SnO2 for Catalytic Reduction of Organic and Cr6+ Pollutants in the Dark

Baoqian Yang,Xinru Wu,Zhengjie Su,Benjamin Kunkadma Insua,Pengkun Zhang,Dong-Hau Kuo,Lulu Gao,Xinde Bao,Dongfang Lu,Jinguo Lin,Xiaoyun Chen

V/S co-doped SnO 2 bimetal sulfur-oxides catalysts labeled as (Sn,V) 1- x (S,O) 2- y or (SnVSO) with heterovalent state and oxygen vacancy defect are prepared via a green and facile method. The presence of SnVSO in the heterovalent states of Sn 4+ /Sn 2+ and V 5+ /V 4+ facilitates the rapid transfer of the electrons. It improves the electronic charge lifetime, accelerating the efficiency of the catalytic reduction of pollutants. The V/S co-doped SnO 2 regulates the bandgap energy structure. The hydrazine adjusts the heterovalent metal states to reduce Sn 4+ to Sn 2+ and V 5+ to V 4+ . Also, it introduces oxygen vacancies to SnVSO to maintain the charge equilibrium and increase the active surface reactive sites, which enhance the catalytic activity. The SnVSO-3 prepared with 0.4 mL hydrazine exhibits excellent catalytic activity, which wholly reduces 20 ppm of 100 mL methyl orange (MO), rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), hexavalent chromium (Cr 6+ ), and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) within 6 min. In addition, the SnVSO-3 also has good stability after repeated 6 runs with a reduction efficiency of 96.8%. Therefore, the V/S co-doped SnO 2 sulfur oxide catalysts have a promising potential for reducing Cr 6+ and organic pollutants.

Enhanced degradation of refractory organics in ORR-EO system with a blue TiO2 nanotube array modified Ti-based Ni-Sb co-doped SnO2 anode

Yifen He,Chao Qu,Na Ren,Dawei Liang

ABSTRACT Recently, a novel 2-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) based electro-oxidation (EO) system was developed, which utilizes a H 2 O 2 generation cathode instead of H 2 evolution cathode. A Ti-based Ni-Sb co-doped SnO 2 (Ti/NATO) anode was selected for efficient degradation of refractory organics and O 3 production. The synergistic reaction of O 3 /H 2 O 2 further accelerated the generation of hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) in the ORR-EO system. However, the catalytic activity and long-term effectiveness of the Ti/NATO anode limited the large-scale application of the ORR-EO process. In this study, a blue TiO 2 nanotube array (blue-TiO 2 -NTA) inter-layer was introduced into the fabrication process between the Ti substrate and NATO catalyst layer. Compared to the Ti/NATO anode, the Ti/blue-TiO 2 -NTA/NATO anode achieved higher efficiency of organic removal and O 3 generation. Additionally, the accelerated lifetime of the Ti/blue-TiO 2 -NTA/NATO anode was increased by 7 times compared to the Ti/NATO anode. When combined with CNTs-C/PTFE air cathode in ORR-EO system, all anodic oxidation and O 3 /H 2 O 2 processes achieved higher • OH production. Over 92% of TOC in leachate bio-effluent was effectively eliminated with a relatively low energy cost of 45 kWh/t.
