It remains a clinical challenge to treat triple-negative breast cancer due to its aggressiveness and metastasis. Photothermal therapy (PTT) in combination with checkpoint blockade immunotherapy offers a promising strategy for such intractable tumors. In this study, a second near-infrared (NIR-II) photothermal agent (PCD NPs) and a tumor microenvironment-activatable nanoprodrug (NLG NPs) for indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO-1) blockade have been designed for the therapy of orthotopic triple-negative breast cancer. The NIR-II absorption of PCD NPs can guarantee the high penetration depth of the laser during PTT. At the same time, NLG NPs can be decomposed into the NLG919 monomer in the tumor microenvironment, which can effectively strengthen the immunogenic cell death-induced immune response. NIR-II PTT in synergy with IDO-1 blockade can effectively inhibit tumor growth and prevent tumor recurrence and metastasis. This work thus provides a safe, efficient and feasible method for the treatment of malignant tumors.

The widespread abuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of drug-resistant bacterial strains, severely complicating the treatment of infectious wounds. Traditional therapies are often limited to antibacterial or anti-inflammatory approaches, making it challenging to manage both early-stage infection and later-stage tissue regeneration simultaneously. Herein, a Cu 2−x Se nanoparticles (CSNPs) spray containing mixed-valence copper ions, enabling the programmed healing of infectious wounds is developed through light-controlled cascade regulation. In the early infection stages, the copper ions released from CSNPs exert antibacterial effects via chemodynamic therapy (CDT), with their activity significantly enhanced under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. At later stages, Cu 2+ /Cu + ions enter cells, interact with cysteine residues in KEAP1 protein, and induce conformational changes, triggering deubiquitinase activity and suppressing macrophage-driven inflammation. Findings from in vitro and in vivo studies consistently revealed that CSNPs efficiently depleted glutathione and enhanced H 2 O 2 breakdown, leading to the generation of •OH and O 2 •- under NIR exposure, which resulted in an MRSA elimination rate exceeding 99%. Mechanistically, CSNPs bind to KEAP1, removing the ubiquitin linkage from NRF2, thereby inhibiting inflammation. This CSNPs spray provides a dual synergistic effect of antimicrobial and tissue-regenerative properties, offering an innovative approach for treating antibiotic-resistant infections in wounds.

Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) forms semi-transparent cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) under lyotropic conditions, exhibiting concentration- and temperature-dependent structural colors, covering the spectral region from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR). Notably, HPC CLCs exhibit a milky-white color against a white background owing to the incoherent scattering. Inspired by basal melanin-mediated color saturation between blue and white Steller's jay feathers, black backgrounds significantly enhance the saturation of structural colors by suppressing multiple incoherent scattering. Leveraging this mechanism, we propose a facile three-dimensional (3D) integration method for fabricating thermoresponsive and extreme-condition-resistance devices, composed of HPC CLCs with structural colors and thermochromic powders (TCPs) with a color switch between black and white. A single device displays color transitions among black, blue, green, red, and white, resulting from the synergistic effects of helical pitch modulation and dynamic incoherent scattering upon temperature stimuli. Intriguingly, coupling conductive carbon-oil substrates with hybrids enables electrothermal multicolor displays through Joule heating effects. Furthermore, the devised hybrids show great potential in anti-counterfeiting, smart labeling, camouflage, and information encryption through programmable TCP patterning beneath HPC CLCs. This work pioneers a new paradigm for synergistic integration of stimuli-responsive photonic crystals with adaptive absorbers, enabling scalable fabrication of color-switchable devices with customized control capabilities.

UV–vis–NIR photodetectors are of great importance to extensive applications, while they are limited by the low photon utilization and narrow light response range inherent in a single material. To overcome these limitations, we propose the construction of heterojunction photosensitive materials featuring a hollow structure. In this study, Y-type titanylphthalocyanine nanoparticles (Y-TiOPc NPs) and hollow ZnS nanotubes (ZnS NTs) are employed to fabricate a bulk heterojunction photosensitive material (Y-TiOPc NPs:ZnS NTs). This composite material exhibits a significant cavity enhancement effect, resulting from multiple light reflections and outstanding light absorption spanning from 365 to 1060 nm. The photodetector based on Y-TiOPc NPs:ZnS NTs (referred to as Y:ZT-PD) demonstrates remarkable photodetection capabilities, including photomultiplication phenomena. Specifically, it achieves a high external quantum efficiency of 24042%, an impressive photoresponsivity (R) of 101967 mA/W, and an excellent specific detectivity (D*) of 1.56 × 1012 Jones at 0.01 mW/cm2. Additionally, the multiperiod time-resolved photocurrent response curves exhibit rapid and stable responses across different wavelengths. Characterization results indicate that these exceptional performances primarily arise from the cavity enhancement effect of ZnS NTs and the hole-injection effect resulting from interfacial trapped electrons. Consequently, the outstanding performance, coupled with the broad spectral range and stability, positions the hollow bulk heterojunction as a promising material for the next generation of broadband photodetectors.

Traditional treatments for drug-resistant bacterial keratitis and pneumonia often prove ineffective due to the presence of biofilm barriers and multidrug resistance. Existing nano-antibacterial systems face several limitations, including insufficient tissue penetration depth in the first near-infrared (NIR I) window, the inability of a single treatment modality to simultaneously disrupt biofilms and eradicate residual bacteria, and a lack of efficacy validation in cross-organ (ocular-pulmonary) infection models. In this study, we employed a defect engineering strategy, to construct a palladium-doped TiO 2 nanozyme with oxygen vacancies (PdO V -TiO X ). This nanozyme achieves multiple antibacterial effects through the synergistic combination of second near-infrared (NIR-II) laser-activated photothermal therapy and chemodynamic therapy. Under 1064 nm laser excitation, the system utilizes oxygen vacancy-enhanced peroxidase-like activity to continuously generate hydroxyl radicals (•OH), resulting in a 5.2-fold increase in radical production compared to dark conditions. Additionally, it induces a local temperature rise (ΔT = 28.2 °C). These combined effects—physical disruption of the biofilm matrix and ROS-mediated oxidative stress—effectively dismantle the defense mechanisms of drug-resistant bacteria. In models of drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus keratitis and pneumonia, PdO V -TiO X demonstrated therapeutic efficacy in both the eye and lung, indicating the broad cross-organ applicability of this treatment. Under NIR-II irradiation, the PdO V -TiO X nanozyme significantly elevated ROS levels at the infection site, achieving efficient bactericidal action while effectively penetrating and disrupting mature biofilms. This work presents a novel defect-engineering-regulated nanozyme synergistic therapeutic strategy for the treatment of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.

Near-infrared II (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm) luminescence has emerged as a powerful tool for biomedical applications, including sensing, imaging, and drug delivery, owing to its superior tissue penetration depth and high spatial resolution. Lanthanide-based NIR-II nanoprobes are particularly promising due to their outstanding photostability and minimal cytotoxicity. However, two critical challenges impede their widespread implementation: severe thermal quenching at elevated temperatures and inefficient downshifting processes. Herein, a novel strategy is reported to address these limitations by precisely modulating energy transfer dynamics between Ho 3+ and Pr 3+ ions in NaYF 4 core–shell engineering. By carefully optimizing the concentration ratio and spatial distribution of these lanthanide ions in NaYF 4 core–shell nanocrystals, the population of 1 G 4 (Pr 3+ ) is significantly increased, effectively suppressing thermal quenching while boosting downshifting efficiency. The optimized system leverages dual NIR-II emission channels ( 1 G 4 and 5 I 6 ) in NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ @NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Pr 3+ nanocrystals, enabling ultrasensitive temperature sensing with a maximum relative sensitivity ( S r ) of 2.03% K −1 . Furthermore, the synergistic up/down-conversion properties of Ho 3+ and Pr 3+ facilitate multimodal anti-counterfeiting, offering a robust platform for advanced information encryption and storage. This work not only establishes a new paradigm for engineering NIR-II luminescence but also underscores their vast potential in advanced applications, from precision biosensing to high-security encoding technologies.

The modulation of structural and mechanical properties through construction of interpenetrating (IPN) hydrogels offers significant potential for expanding their applications as drug carriers. In this study, a silk fibroin (SF)/Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polydopamine particles (PDA) hydrogel with IPN structure for near-infrared (NIR)-responsive controlled release of drugs were prepared by combining enzyme crosslinking with freeze–thaw cycles treatment. Compared with SF/PVA hydrogels prepared solely by enzyme crosslinking, the IPN hydrogels exhibited enhanced stability, a more ordered pore structure, and improved mechanical property. The hydrogels withstood 90 % of compressive deformation without breaking, and the maximum tensile strain at break reached 140.07 %. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the hydrogels were tunable by adjusting the ratio and concentration of SF and PVA. The incorporation of PDA particles into the IPN SF/PVA hydrogel endowed the material with excellent NIR responsiveness. Upon 808 nm NIR irradiation for 10 min, the temperature increased by 19.8°C, with stable photothermal conversion performance maintained over three irradiation cycles. In addition, SF/PVA/PDA hydrogels exhibited good biocompatibility and NIR-responsive drug release capability. These findings highlight the potential of this SF/PVA/PDA hydrogel as a promising material for drug-controlled release applications.

The escalating threat of bacterial infections underscores the pressing need for innovative antibacterial solutions. In this study, BA-BBR@MPN nanoparticles (BA-BBR@MPN NPs) were synthesized through the self-assembly of berberine (BBR) and baicalin (BA), followed by modification with a metal-phenolic network (MPN) derived from caffeic acid and Fe 3+ . In the slightly acidic environment of the infected site, the MPN decomposes to release iron ions, BBR, and BA. The iron ions catalyze the generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) from hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), enabling chemodynamic therapy (CDT) while simultaneously depleting glutathione levels. When combined with 808 nm laser-induced photothermal therapy (PTT), the system demonstrates synergistic antibacterial effects. Both in vitro and in vivo studies confirmed the platform's broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, along with excellent biocompatibility and significant wound-healing promotion. This multifunctional nanoplatform represents a promising strategy for combating bacterial infections while simultaneously promoting tissue repair.

Perillae Folium (PF) is a well-known food and herb containing different chemotypes, which affect its quality. Herein, a method was proposed to classify and quantify PF chemotypes using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and Fourier transform-near infrared spectroscopy (FT-NIR). GC–MS results revealed that PF contains several chemotypes, including perilla ketone (PK) type, α -asarone (PP-as) type, and dillapiole (PP-dm) type, with the PK type being the predominant chemotype. Based on FT-NIR data, different chemotypes were accurately classified. The random forest algorithm achieved >90 % accuracy in chemotype classification. Furthermore, the main components of perilla ketone and isoegomaketone in PF were successfully quantified using partial least squares regression models, with prediction to deviation values of 3.76 and 2.59, respectively. This method provides valuable insights and references for the quality supervision of PF and other foods.

Second near-infrared (NIR-II) laser-mediated photothermal therapy and sonothermal therapy using low-intensity focused ultrasound exposure for tumors have attracted increasing attention owing to their ability to penetrate deep tissues and provide noninvasive ablation with high therapeutic efficacy. However, their applications were limited by the shortness of optimal NIR-II photothermal agents and sonothermal agents. In this study, we discovered that the edge-selectively hydroxylated graphene nanosheets (EHG NSs) with excellent water dispersibility and an “intact conjugated plane” were not only an outstanding NIR-II photothermal agent but also an effective sonothermal agent for tumor therapy. EHG NSs were incorporated into an injectable adhesive thermosensitive hydrogel with a characteristic sol–gel phase transition behavior. EHG NSs endowed the injectable hydrogel with an exceptional photothermal effect under the laser irradiation (1064 nm, 1.0 W cm−2) as well as an effective sonothermal effect under ultrasonic exposure (3.0 MHz, 2.1 W cm−2), effectively killing tumor cells in vitro and inhibiting tumor growth after intratumoral injection. Especially, the NIR-II photothermal therapy based on the hybrid hydrogel completely ablated the primary tumors and effectively activated systemic anti-tumor immune responses benefiting from the protein adsorption capacity of the injectable hydrogel, significantly inhibiting the growth of the distal tumors. Collectively, EHG nanosheets loaded in the injectable hydrogel will be a promising “all-rounder” for noninvasive deep penetrating thermotherapy and a potent platform that integrates various therapies.

Gold nanobipyramids (Au NBPs), as a novel and emerging plasmonic nanomaterial, have shown larger local electric field enhancements, larger optical cross-sections, and higher refractive index sensitivity compared to other plasmonic nanoparticles. Besides, their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption can be tailored to cover the entire NIR-II light region, which is crucial for clinical cancer treatment. However, strategies to synthesize Au NBPs with an NIR-II light response still have several disadvantages, such as tedious procedures and the use of hazardous chemical substances. In this work, we used a seed-mediated growth method and explored new strategies to synthesize high-yield Au NBPs with an NIR-II light response, especially in the region above 1030 nm, by regulating the conditions during Au seed growth. The yield of Au NBPs with a response at 1060 nm has been improved by 5-fold and 6-fold compared to previous seed-mediated growth methods when 230 μL of sodium citrate or a controlled temperature of 45 °C were used for Au seed growth with an Au seed solution containing 125 μL of NaBH4. The influence mechanism of these factors on Au seed growth and the yield of Au NBPs has been explored in detail. Furthermore, the photodynamic and photothermal behaviors of Au NBPs with LSPR absorption at 1060 nm have been investigated, and the results indicate that Au NBPs have great potential in photothermal therapy. Besides, Au NBPs have been proven to induce immunogenic cell death (ICD), indicating their potential in immunotherapy. This work may provide a new idea for the synthesis and biomedical applications of Au NBPs with an NIR-II response.

Postoperative tumor recurrence and metastasis have long been challenging issues for cancer patients. In this work, we have developed an implantable carbon foam that uniquely integrates second near-infrared (NIR-II) light triggered drug release, photothermal therapy, and rapid hemostasis by cross-linking a drug-loaded agarose gel with porous carbon foam (DOX@AG/CF). The functionalized carbon foam possessed outstanding photothermal conversion performance, achieving a rapid temperature rise exceeding 108 °C in just 4 s under a low power intensity of 0.25 W cm −2 with 1064 nm laser irradiation, thereby minimizing the risk of severe skin damage. Furthermore, DOX@AG/CF can regulate the release of the loaded drug though the temperature-responsive agarose gel, which synergistically facilitates postoperative therapy. As a result, such all-in-one gel/carbon foam composite, integrating postoperative hemostasis, photothermal therapy and photocontrolled chemotherapy, can effectively eradicate residual tumor cells and prevent the recurrence and metastasis of cancer in vivo . More importantly, the implanted carbon foam demonstrated excellent degradability and biocompatibility, presenting great potential in clinical application.
