Magnetic Field Induced Dielectric Polarization to Enhance Raman Detection of Nitrite by NiFe2O4@Ag

Peng Zhao,Haorong Sun,Feixue Gao,Long Yu,Kangle Shang,Ming Fang,Bin Ma,Xiaoli Tan,Suhua Wang,Xiangke Wang

Rapid and accurate detection of nitrite in the aqueous environment is extremely important for ecological safety and human health. In this paper, the Raman detection of nitrite by a NiFe 2 O 4 @Ag sensor in water is enhanced by an extra magnetic field collaborated with surface plasma. Most importantly, it is demonstrated that the magnetic field enhances the Raman peak intensity through not only the effect of magnetic aggregation but also the magnetic field-induced dielectric polarization effect. In this way, the NO 2 − can be detected in a wide linear range from 10 −8 to 10 −3 mol L −1 , and the limit of detection (LOD) can reach as low as 1.25 × 10 −9 mol L −1 , which is 5.69 times lower than that in the absence of an external magnetic field. Similarly, the sensitivity under the magnetic field is 2.65 times that without the magnetic field. In addition, the sensor also shows superior detection ability to NO 2 − in real samples. Given the excellent capability of the magnetic field-enhanced Raman spectra, the reported strategy offers new thoughts on how to enhance the detection ability by an external magnetic field and show the great application potential in real water bodies.

Monodisperse silver nanocubes composite Ag@C/SrTiO3 photocatalytic decomposition of water for hydrogen reduction

Xinru Li,Yaoning Bai,Yuwei Yan,Taoyuan Ouyang,Xiaodi Jiang,Xu Wang,Xiaoming Cai,Jinming Cai,Honglin Tan

Metal-induced photocatalysis has been a relatively effective strategy for the efficient use of solar energy. In this paper, highly efficient and stable Ag@C/SrTiO 3 photocatalysts were prepared by compounding silver nanocubes wrapped with few layers graphite with strontium titanate materials. We obtained silver nanocubes with a uniformly dispersed size of about 35 nm by varying the surface energy of silver and inducing the preferential binding of PVP on the (100) crystal plane with the help of selective adsorption of chloride ions on the different crystal planes of silver. As obtained under the characterisation of UV–visible absorption spectra, the material has a broad visible light absorption (450–900 nm). The Ag@C/SrTiO 3 has a hydrogen reduction rate of up to 457.5 μmol g −1 ·h −1 under simulated sunlight, which is ∼200 % higher than the SrTiO 3 and ∼900 % higher than the sliver. Moreover, the catalyst was stable, still producing 93.5 % hydrogen after three cycles of testing, and the photocatalyst structure did not change as known from the XRD data of the material before and after testing. The present work demonstrates the feasibility of rational design of efficient and stable silver-based photocatalysts.

Preparation and photocatalytic and antibacterial properties of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan/TiO2@Ag electrospun nanofibers

Tran Dung Hoang,Thuy Chinh Nguyen,Thanh Tung Doan,Thanh Dung Ngo,Thi Yen Nguyen,Ba Thanh Ngo,Thanh Thuy Tran,Trong Lu Le

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a widely used polymer in the electrospinning technique. It is water-soluble, which limits the application of electrospun PVA matrix. In this study, chitosan (CS) and biosynthesized TiO 2 @Ag nanoparticles were incorporated into PVA to enhance its antibacterial properties and photocatalysis. The PVA/CS/TiO 2 @Ag nanofiber mat was prepared using the electrospinning method with a voltage of 20 kV, a needle-collector distance of 15 cm, and a flow rate of 0.5 mL. h − 1 . The concentrations of the PVA and CS solutions were 10% and 2%, respectively. The TiO 2 @Ag nanoparticles were synthesized using AgNO 3 solution, TiO 2 nanoparticles as precursors, and Cleistocalyx operculatus leaf extract as a reducing agent. The morphology and structure of the PVA/CS/TiO 2 @Ag nanofiber mat were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The PVA/CS/TiO 2 @Ag nanofibers exhibited an average fibril diameter of 116.4 nm. Additionally, the antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), as well as the photocatalytic properties of these mats, were assessed. The results indicated that the addition of CS and TiO 2 @Ag led to changes in the hydrophilic properties and antibacterial efficacy of PVA. The inhibition zones of the PVA/CS/TiO 2 @Ag nanofiber mat against E. coli and S. aureus were measured at 5 and 4 mm, respectively. The water contact angle of PVA/CS/TiO 2 @Ag nanofiber mat showed a significant increase. The PVA/CS/TiO 2 @Ag nanofibers were able to degrade 94.56 ± 0.57% and 98.17 ± 0.11% of methylene blue dye under sunlight irradiation after 10 and 20 min of exposure, respectively. These findings suggest that the PVA/CS/TiO 2 @Ag nanofiber mat has the potential for applications in the textile industry or medicinal field as antibacterial and photocatalytic coatings.

Preparation of Ag-Cu-MOF-74 and its bromine adsorption in simulated saline water

Xiaocui Zhang,Xiaoxin Wang,Jun Gao,Jiangcheng Li,Xiangfeng Liang,Qinghui Shou

The global need for bromide ions (Br - ) has driven the research focus to extract them from various liquid ores. Highly efficient and selective adsorbent is still lacking. MOF with large surface area and structural stability are promising candidate for Br - extraction. In this work, we prepared Cu-MOF-74 nanocrystals. Abundant hydroxyl groups on them spontaneously reduced Ag + to Ag 0 nanoparticles, resulting in the fabrication of Ag 0 doped Cu-MOF-74. The crystalline structure retains after the doping of Ag 0 when the mass ratio of silver nitrate to MOF is <0.5. The crystals are distorted or even damaged when the ratio is higher than 1.0 according to XRD and DFT calculation. The adsorption capacity of Ag 3 -Cu-MOF-74 is 232.92 mg g -1 , surpassing the capacities of most previously documented adsorbents. The desorption of Br - and thereafter the recovery of adsorbent could be realized through light driven decomposition of AgBr. This MOF adsorbent shows promising application potential in Br - recovery from various liquid ores.

Multifunctional and high-performance electrothermal films based on carbon black/Ag nanowires/graphene composites

Wang Zijian,Yu Wen,Gao Chaochao,Zhu Zhenye,Zhang Jiaheng

Fabricating high-conductive composites and constructing highly conductive networks are crucial for high-performance electrothermal film. In this study, an Ag nanowires/graphene (Ag/G) composite synthesized by liquid-phase exfoliation and in-situ photoreduction is mixed with carbon black (CB) to form a composite conductive ink, and a CB/Ag/G composite electrothermal film with a point-line-plane three-dimensional microstructure is obtained via blade coating process. Both the addition of Ag nanowires and a subsequent compression rolling treatment induce the establishment of the effective conductive network in the film, endowing it with an outstanding conductivity of 399.4 S cm −1 . The film reaches a T s of 204 °C with an input voltage of 3.0 V, and is successfully applied in water heating and de-icing, demonstrating its extraordinary electrothermal performance and vast potential for practical applications. The film is also used as an electromagnetic shielding film and heat dissipation substrate, showing exceptional electromagnetic shielding (42.5 dB) and heat dissipation properties.

SERS substrate based on COF@Ag for detecting amoxicillin in honey and lake water

Kun Chen,Chaoqun Ma,Guoqing Chen,Taiqun Yang,Hui Gao,Lei Li,Zichen Yang,Jun Cao,Chenkai Zheng,Longyao Ma

This study presents the design of a Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate, COF@Ag, for the sensitive detection of Amoxicillin (AMX) in lake water and honey. Furthermore, the study investigates the role of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in SERS detection. The characterization results demonstrate the capability of COFs to efficiently enrich Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), resulting in a more concentrated distribution of hotspots and an enhanced electromagnetic field on the substrate. By employing density functional theory (DFT) simulation, the frontier electronic orbitals of COFs and AMX were analyzed, and the chemical bonds and weak interactions in the system were examined using the Interaction Region Indicator (IRI) method to propose potential enhancement mechanisms. In aqueous solutions, the linear range is 1 μg/L-30 μg/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) 0.279 μg/L. In lake water, the linear range span from 100 μg/L to 500 μg/L, with a detection limit of 8.244 μg/L. For honey, the linear range extend from 20 ng/g to 100 ng/g, with a detection limit of 2.917 ng/g. This method holds key significance in facilitating the rapid detection of amoxicillin and advancing the application of COFs in SERS.

TiO2−x/Ag/rGO composites as effective photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants

Ali Baqaei,Ali Asghar Sabbagh Alvani,Hassan Sameie,Federico Rosei

We designed and fabricated a photocatalyst made of reduced titanium dioxide nanorods (TiO2−x NRs) that incorporates silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets, to narrow the band gap and improve the photoinduced degradation of methylene blue (MB). The morphological characterization showed that Ag NPs and rGO sheets were well-deposited on both the top surface and the outer walls of vertically oriented 1D TiO2−x NRs. Energy dispersive spectroscopy and specific surface area analyses confirmed the presence of both Ag NPs and rGO sheets and the as-obtained TiO2−x/Ag/rGO sample exhibited a large specific surface area (153.7 m2 g−1). Moreover, X-ray diffraction patterns contained peaks characteristic of tetragonal rutile TiO2 and confirmed that there is no phase change after reduction treatment. The optical investigation revealed that the formation of Ti3+ ions, surface defects and oxygen vacancies were considered as major reasons for the red shift of the absorption edge towards the visible region (546 nm) compared with pristine TiO2 NRs. The incorporation of Ag NPs and rGO with TiO2−x NRs improved the light absorbance and the narrowing of the TiO2−x bandgap energy (from 2.95 to 1.97 eV) as a result of the SPR effect of Ag NPs and the reduced light reflection in the presence of rGO. Therefore, among the various as-prepared photocatalysts, the TiO2−x/Ag/rGO (2% wt) photocatalyst showed the best performance, degrading almost 100% of MB under 120 min visible light irradiation. Kinetic studies confirmed that degradation reactions over all photocatalysts followed first order kinetics. The photodegradation rate toward MB over TiO2−x/Ag/rGO (2% wt) is 6.45, 1.85, and 1.6 times higher compared to that of pristine TiO2 NRs, TiO2−x and TiO2−x/Ag, respectively. The TiO2−x/Ag/rGO composite proves to be an exceptionally efficient photocatalyst for water treatment.

Wearability Analysis of Ag Nanoparticle-Loaded Cotton Fabric Modified by SPEEK/PVA Blend Polymer

Wang Peng,Jin Zengkai,Mai Ke,Zhu Lei,Lin Junxiong

The antibacterial silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs)-loaded cotton fabric modified by SPEEK/PVA film was prepared by photo-induced method with 350 nm UV light irradiation. Its wearable properties, such as wrinkle recovery, tensile property, thermal stability and water vapour permeability were investigated. It was found that the fabric loaded with Ag NPs retained its brown colour after five cycles of washing in soap solution. TG/DTG analysis indicated that the fabric had two pyrolysis peak temperatures at about 370 °C and 500 °C, and the loading of Ag NPs improved the thermal stability of the cotton fabric. The crease recovery angles of the fabric in both warp and weft directions increased with the generation of Ag NPs. However, both the breaking force and elongation at break decreased with the generation of Ag NPs due to the use of UV irradiation, which is destrimental to the mechanical performance of textile materials. Moreover, the deposition of Ag NPs led to a minor decrease of the water-vapour transmission rate. The hand-feel evaluation showed that the softness of the fabric improved whilst the smoothness declined with the loading of Ag NPs. The water contact angle was found to be 135.2°, indicating that the Ag NPs-loaded cotton fabric had excellent hydrophobicity.

Synthesis of inorganic/organic hybrid-shell antibacterial polyurea microcapsules loaded with Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles

Shuying Yang,Fan Zhang,Jinping Zhao,Haijiao Kang,Qing Ke

Silver/titanium dioxide (Ag/TiO 2 ) nanoparticles, renowned as effective inorganic antibacterial agents with a wide spectrum of activity and minimal resistance induction, encounter challenges when incorporated into organic substrates. This integration often leads to particle aggregation, resulting in a substantial reduction in antibacterial efficacy. This study devised a novel approach involving loading Ag/TiO 2 nanoparticles onto polyurea microcapsules (PUMC), forming hybrid-shelled microcapsules (Ag/TiO 2 -PUMC) using silane coupling agents. The preparation of polyurea microcapsules offers the advantages of rapid synthesis and mild reaction conditions, facilitating industrial-scale production. Additionally, loading Ag/TiO 2 nanoparticles onto polyurea microcapsules helps alleviate the aggregation issue, and the organic nature of polyurea microcapsules enhances compatibility with organic substrates. Characterization techniques, including SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, EPR and thermogravimetric analysis, were employed to confirm the successful grafting of Ag/TiO 2 nanoparticles onto the PUMC. A comparative analysis between the two silane coupling agents, KH550 and KH792, revealed that the dual amino-functional silane coupling agent, KH792, played a pivotal role in chain extension during the microcapsule self-polymerization process. The antibacterial activity of the Ag/TiO 2 -PUMC was evaluated against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Remarkably, the hybrid-shelled microcapsules exhibited outstanding antibacterial efficacy, achieving a 99.99% antibacterial rate within just 0.5 hours. This performance surpassed unmodified Ag/TiO 2 nanoparticles, highlighting the enhanced antibacterial efficacy of the hybrid-shelled microcapsule structure. This study presents a successful synthesis strategy for inorganic/organic hybrid-shelled antibacterial microcapsules and provides valuable insights for refining inorganic antibacterial agents. The demonstrated approach holds substantial promise for advancing the field of organic antibacterial materials.

Understanding Contributions of Silanols Over Ag/USY Catalysts in Selective Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Ma Xueqin,Shen Liuwei,Shi Gaolei,Zhang Xingguang

The selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to value-added products plays an important role in biomass catalytic transformation, which essentially depends upon design of highly efficient and selective catalysts. This study aims to identify contributions of silanols (Si-OH groups) on Ag/USY catalysts to regulating catalytic performances in selective oxidation of HMF to HMFCA (5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid), by means of aluminium tri-sec-butoxide (AlBO) modification to suppress Si-OH groups of USY and 2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine (2,6-DTBPy) selective poison to shield Brønsted acid sites in the reaction system. The catalysts are characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, XPS and FT-IR to examine the crystal structures, surface areas, porosity, morphology, Ag distribution, chemical states, and surface adsorptive properties. The HMF conversion (44-49.2%) slightly changes with increasing AlBO content, whereas the HMFCA selectivity gradually goes down from 56.2 to around 22.1% and the levulinic acid (LA) selectivity minorly raises from 5.6 to 12.8%. The production of LA originates from enhanced Brönsted acid sites after AlBO modification, and the decline of HMFCA selectivity is principally attributed to the suppression of Si-OH groups that weakens the interaction between HMF reactants and catalysts. This work provides new insights into the role of surface modification in tailoring metal and zeolite-based catalysts for organic conversions. Graphical

Flexible and recyclable PI/Ag Nanofiber SERS substrates for ultrasensitive detection of pesticide residues

Ziwen Yang,Boyang Guo,Keyan Liu,Zhi Zhu,Donglai Han,Cong Wang,Jing Song

Although surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has become a powerful analytical technique for ultrasensitive molecular detection, it still faces challenges including instability, unrepeatability, and non-recyclable. The rational design and fabrication of SERS substrates that are simultaneously stable, reproducible, and recyclable remains a critical yet unmet need. Here, we present a flexible polyimide-silver (PI/Ag) nanofiber-based SERS platform, synthesized via electrospinning and in-situ reduction techniques. The spatial distribution and density of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were precisely regulated by tuning the type and concentration of reducing agents, which effectively modulated the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect to optimize SERS performance. Among the tested formulations, the PI/Ag-NB substrate—prepared using NaBH 4 as the reducing agent—exhibited the most favorable nanoparticle dispersion and the strongest SERS activity. Using 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as a probe molecule, the PI/Ag-NB substrate achieved a maximum enhancement factor (EF) of 1.17 × 10 7 . Beyond its high sensitivity, the substrate demonstrated broad spectral responsiveness, enabling the reliable detection of diverse analytes such as methylene blue (MB), methyl violet (CV), Congo red (CR) and malachite green (MG). To further validate its practical utility, long-term stability, and recyclability, the substrate was employed for the detection of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) pesticide residues both in aqueous solutions and soil extracts. Notably, the substrate stored for 30 days maintained performance over 10 consecutive detection cycles, their robustness and reproducibility. The platform achieved a measured detection limit of 10 −10  M, with a theoretical limit reaching as low as 3.12 × 10 −11  M, highlighting the ultrasensitive detection capability of the substrate. Collectively, these findings establish PI/Ag-NB nanofibers as a versatile and high-performance SERS platform, paving the way for their practical applications in environmental monitoring, food safety, and chemical sensing.
