Enhanced 17α-estradiol removal by biosynthesized rGO@Fe NPs using a response surface methodology

Longjie Liu,Qingping Wang,Jiajiang Lin,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

Recently, estrogen has attracted widespread concern because it is increasing being detected in wastewater treatment plants. While techniques for estrogen removal have been reported, these have mostly focused on exploring the effect on removal using simple single-factor experiments, rather than applying more complex multifactor mathematical models to wastewater treatment. In this study, reduced graphene oxide-based iron nanoparticles (rGO@Fe NPs) were used for 17α-estradiol (αE 2 ) removal based on adsorption and Fenton oxidation . A response surface methodology , based on a Box-Behnken design, was used to determine the relationships between critical operation factors (pH, temperature, αE 2 concentration, rGO@Fe NPs dose and H 2 O 2 concentration) and removal efficiency to establish the optimal conditions for 1 mg L −1 αE 2 removal. Under the determined optimal reaction condition of pH 6.0, temperature 40 °C, 0.08 g L −1 rGO@Fe NPs dose and 6 mM H 2 O 2 , a maximum removal efficiency of 99.9% was obtained. Subsequently, the presence of co-existing anions (Cl − , SO 4 2− and NO 3 − ) significantly decreased the removal efficiency of αE 2 . However, αE 2 removal from domestic wastewater could be increased by 38.0% when applying RSM results. Moreover, αE 2 removal by rGO@Fe NPs remained stable over five reuse cycles indicating that rGO@Fe NPs would be an efficient and practical advanced materials for αE 2 removal.

PdM (M = Fe, Co, Ni) bimetallic nanowires enhances oxygen reduction catalysis in acid medium

Yu Dan,Dong Seng,Liu Qian,Jia Weiyi,Gao Faming,Wang Yatao

The preparation of platinum-free electrocatalysts with ideal oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity is of great significance for cost-effective fuel cells. Herein, we synthesize a series of Pd-based (PdFe, PdCo, PdNi, and Pd) nanowires (PdM NWs). Their diameters are about 10 nm. And the lengths are up to even micrometers. The mass activity of the series of Pd-based catalysts followed the descending order: PdNi NWs/C > commercial Pt/C > PdCo NWs/C > PdFe NWs/C > pure Pd NWs/C. The optimal half-wave (E 1/2 ) of PdNi NWs/C (839 mV) is positive shift 138 and 25 mV compared with pure Pd NWs/C (701 mV) and commercial Pt/C (814 mV), respectively. The mass activity (MA) of PdNi NWs/C only dropped 28% after 10,000 potential cycles between 0.6 and 1.1 V versus RHE in acid medium. This work provides a promising and reliable strategy to synthesize high performance Pd-based electrocatalyst, which is promising alternative to expensive Pt-based electrocatalysts for fuel cells. Graphical Abstract TOC: We prepared bimetallic PdNi nanowires, which ORR mass activity higher than pure Pd nanowires and commercial Pt/C in acidic medium.

Carbon sequestration during Fe(III)-Fulvic acid coprecipitation and kinetics of hydrated Cu(II)

Yihao Li,Hongmei Tang,Xiangqin Peng,Shiyang Tao,Jie Ding,Meiqing Chen,Pingxiao Wu,Nengwu Zhu

The dynamic interactions among iron (Fe) oxides and organic matter (OM) play vital roles in controlling the geochemical cycling of carbon (C) and toxic trace metals. Although the effects of OM on the Fe oxides transformation, and dynamic with toxic trace metals have been studied previously, it is still poor to understand the mechanistic and quantitative on the C sequestration during the Fe(III) mineralization process, and kinetics with hydrated Cu(II) in the acid drainage. In this study, Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and density functional theory (DFT) were used to elucidate the underlying mechanism for the fine structure of iron minerals, fulvic acid (FA) sequestration and hydrated Cu(II) coordination on Fe oxides. FA dosages played an essential role in the formation of Fe oxides, which can inhibit the formation of Fe-O octahedrons and benefit to the Fe-O tetrahedron. FA molecules were mainly sequestrated on the surfaces of Fe oxides and van der Waals forces were the main interaction between FA and Fe oxides. The hydrated Cu(II) oxides mainly distributed on the surface of iron oxides as divalent oxidation states, and feasible coordinated with phenolic hydroxyl group of FA and Fe oxides. The knowledge of the dynamic coupling between Fe oxide transformation under the effect of FA and the fate of hydrated Cu(II) on Fe oxides provided the basis for predicting the geochemical process of Fe, C and toxic trace metals.

Engineered Fe-doped activated carbon from industry waste for peroxymonosulfate activation: Performance and mechanism

Xiaohui Fan,Jinjin Zhao,Cheng Cheng,Yin Xu,Hui Zhang

Efficient and low-cost catalysts are important for contaminant remediation in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In this study, a solid waste, generated by the polyferric chloride coagulation of the phenol-saturated powder activated carbon from an industrial wastewater treatment plant, was used to prepare metal/carbon composites under different pyrolysis temperatures (650–950 °C). The catalyst pyrolyzed at 950 °C (FeAC-950) exhibited the highest reactive activity for PMS activation as demonstrated by a series of electrochemical techniques. Nearly complete BPA elimination can be achieved within 60 min by 0.1 g L –1 FeAC-950 and 0.5 mM PMS. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), chemical quenching and open circuit potential (OCPT) experiments demonstrate a combined radical and non-radical oxidation mechanism in the FeAC-950/PMS process and BPA was removed dominantly through radical pathway. Various persistent organic pollutants can be efficiently eliminated in the FeAC-950/PMS system. In addition, the present system showed good tolerance to natural organic matter as well as some common anions such as chloride and nitrate. This study dedicated a simple method to prepare an efficient solid waste-based catalyst in environmental catalysis. The outcomes will not only provide a value-added reuse approach for waste management but also facilitate the FeAC-950 applications in wastewater remediation technologies.

Flame Synthesis of Fe-Doped Co3O4/CNT/NF for Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Mu Guili,Zhou Jinglin,Ye Beirong,Zhang Tengfei,Li Chen,Zhao Qiang

The development of efficient, long-lasting, low-cost, and environment friendly electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is imminent in many energy storage and conversion devices. Here, a unique electrocatalyst of Fe-doped Co 3 O 4 particles loaded on carbon nanotubes (Fe-doped Co 3 O 4 /CNT/NF) was synthesized by a one-step flame method. This method significantly reduces the reaction time (the whole flame process just maintain ~ 10 s). The doping of iron significantly enhances the activity of the OER, as demonstrated by a reduced overpotential of 232 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 , a tiny Tafel slope (34.1 mV dec −1 ), and long-lasting durability in an alkaline electrolyte. This work provides a potential possibility for large-scale industrial production. Graphical Abstract The carbon nanotubes attached with Fe-doped and Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles were generated in situ by a simple and reliable one-step flame method. Fe-doped and Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles were immobilized on the surface of the carbon nanotubes, resulting in Co being able to expose more active edges. As a result, the newly designed Fe-doped Co 3 O 4 /CNT/NF exhibits lower overpotential and Tafel slope. The low cost of the basic materials in this design and the easy and fast preparation method ensure that it can be produced on a large scale.

Construction of mesoporous Si-Fe-GO composite for the highly efficient removal of uranium

Siqi Huang,Yong Zhang,Bingyu Mei,Xiaoyu Tian,Wenkun Zhu,Jun Liao,Nan Sun

The mesoporous Si-Fe-GO composite was prepared by sol–gel method to remove uranium. In the static adsorption process, the Si-Fe-GO composite possessed strong uranium-chelating ability with fast uranium adsorption kinetic (120 min) and high uranium adsorption capacity (576.4 mg/g). The adsorption behavior perfectly followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, revealing the nature of monolayer chemical adsorption. The tolerance experiments of coexisting ions showed that the Si-Fe-GO composite possessed a strong affinity for uranium, which was beneficial for the enrichment of uranium in a multi-component wastewater system. The good regeneration ability also reflected the practical application value of the Si-Fe-GO composite. Besides, the dynamic adsorption studies showed that the Si-Fe-GO composite might be suitable for the remediation of uranium-containing wastewater with low flow rate and low uranium concentration. In conclusion, this work would contribute to the development of functional SiO 2 materials for water remediation and meet the practical requirements for the cleanup of uranium from wastewater.

Adsorption and Reduction of Aqueous Cr by FeS-Modified Fe-Al Layered Double Hydroxide

Shuangshuang Zhang,Wenhui Zhang,Yazhen Wan

To remedy the widespread chromium (Cr) pollution in the environment, this study mainly used the ultrasonic-assisted co-precipitation and precipitation methods to prepare FeS-modified Fe-Al-layered double hydroxide (FeS/LDH) composite material. The experimental results showed that FeS/LDH has higher removal efficiency of Cr in aqueous solution and stronger anti-interference ability than unmodified LDH. Under the same reaction conditions, the removal efficiency of total Cr(Cr(T)) using LDH was 34.85%, and the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was 46.76%. For FeS/LDH, the removal efficiency of Cr(T) and Cr(VI) reached 99.57% and 100%, respectively. The restoration of Cr(T) and Cr(VI) by FeS/LDH satisfied the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(T) and Cr(VI) achieved 102.9 mg/g and 147.7 mg/g. The efficient removal of Cr by FeS/LDH was mainly based on the triple synergistic effect of anion exchange between Cr(VI) and interlayer anions, redox of Cr(VI) with Fe2+and S2−, and co-precipitation of Fe3+and Cr3+.Keywords:chromium;FeS/LDH;double reduction;anti-interference;co-precipitation

Efficient fabrication and characterization of Ni-Fe-WC composite coatings with high corrosion resistance

Hui Jin,Renjie Ji,Tiancong Dong,Shuo Liu,Fan Zhang,Lilong Zhao,Chi Ma,Baoping Cai,Yonghong Liu

Nickel-iron alloy is broadly utilized in the industrial field due to its fabulous mechanical properties. How to prepare nickel-iron alloy with better corrosion resistance more efficiently is an important concern. Based on this, the WC particles enhanced nickel-iron coatings were fabricated by jet electrodeposition (JED) at a high current density of 100A/dm 2 . It was found that increasing the deposition temperature appropriately during JED is beneficial to obtain Ni-Fe-WC coating with the higher number of hard particles. Specifically, the maximum WC particles proportion reaches 4.47 wt% at 55 °C. The electrochemical corrosion behavior of coating was measured by polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The polarization curve test results displayed that the E corr positively shifted from −0.402 to −0.281 V and the i corr reduced from 25.13 to 7.05 μA/cm 2 with the increase of WC particles proportion. Meanwhile, the EIS test results exhibited that the impedance of coating enhanced from 12,720 to 59,140 Ω cm 2 . The neutral salt spray test (NSS) was used to simulate the corrosion of coating in a seawater environment. The NSS results showed that with the increase of WC particles, the corrosion products decreased gradually and the degree of corrosion decreased. The analysis showed that WC particles can help the grain growth and release the internal stress in the coating. Larger grain sizes reduces intergranular corrosion and smaller internal stress help to alleviate stress corrosion cracking. The above research can provide theoretical support for the efficient preparation of particle enhanced composite coating with strong corrosion resistance.

Fe(III)-Shikonin Supramolecular Nanomedicine for Combined Therapy of Tumor via Ferroptosis and Necroptosis

Wenjie Feng,Wanrui Shi,Shuwei Liu,Huiwen Liu,Yi Liu,Pengfei Ge,Hao Zhang

Most of the antitumor chemotherapeutic drugs execute the therapeutic performance upon eliciting tumor cell apoptosis, which may cause chemoresistance of tumors. Design of novel drugs to eradicate apoptosis-resistant tumors via non-apoptotic cell death pathways is promising for improving the long-term chemotherapeutic efficacy. Herein, a Fe(III)-Shikonin metal-polyphenol-coordinated supramolecular nanomedicine for combined therapy of tumor via ferroptosis and necroptosis is designed. The construction of the nanomedicine based on the coordinated self-assembly between Fe 3+ and Shikonin not only overcomes the shortcomings of Shikonin including its low bioavailability and high toxicity toward normal tissues, but also integrates the theranostics functions of Fe ions. Under the exposure of the high concentration of glutathione (GSH) in tumor cells, the as-prepared nanomedicine will disassemble into Fe 2+ and Shikonin, followed by stimulating the tumor cell death through ferroptosis and necroptosis. In addition, benefiting from the stealth effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and the targeting ability of cyclo(Arg-Gly-Asp- d -Phe-Lys) (cRGD) to α v β 3 -integrin, NH 2 -PEG-cRGD-modified nanomedicine exhibits a GSH-responsive therapy toward 4T1 tumor in vivo and self-enhanced longitudinal relaxation (T 1 )-weighted imaging property. Since the self-assembly of natural Shikonin and human body-necessary Fe element is facile and feasible, the work may provide a promising supramolecular nanomedicine for next-generation chemotherapeutic applications.

Superhydrophilic and Photothermal Fe-TCPP Nanofibrous Membrane for Efficient Oil-in-Water Nanoemulsion Separation

Shabab Hussain,Xinyi Wan,Zhou Fang,Xinsheng Peng

Separation and purification of surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water nanoemulsions is a great environmental challenge. Membrane-based separation strategies are more effective over conventional methods in the treatment of nanoemulsion waste water. In this paper, we construct a superhydrophilic membrane by coating a thin photothermal-responsive iron tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (Fe-TCPP) nanofibrous metal organic framework (MOF) selective layer on a macroporous polyethersulfone membrane. The as-prepared membrane exhibits high separation performance of oil-in-water nanoemulsions with permeance of 46.4 L·m–2·h–1·bar–1 and separation efficiency of 99%. It also demonstrates nice anti-oil/ionic-fouling property, good recyclability, and desirable stability. The high separation performance is accredited to the superhydrophilicity, highly charged surface, and nanometer pore sizes of the Fe-TCPP nanofibrous membrane. Due to the unique photothermal property of Fe-TCPP nanofibers, the permeance can be enhanced more than 50% by visible light without deteriorating the rejection. This photo-stimuli MOF-based thin-layer membrane offers great potential for the generation of point-of-use water treatment devices.

Fe decorated CeO2 microsphere catalyst with surface oxygen defect for NO reduction by CO

Yu Guan,Yinhe Liu,Qiang Lv,Bo Wang

The selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) by carbon monoxide (CO-SCR) is a promising way to deal with exhaust gasses. And Effective redox cycle and NO dissociation ability are crucial factors for catalytic reduction of NO x . Herein, Fe decorated CeO 2 microsphere catalysts with surface oxygen defect were synthesized by solvothermal and calcination method. Among all catalysts, 0.5Fe-CeO 2 sample showed excellent catalytic performance with efficiency near 96% for NO reduction under the condition of 550 ppmv NO, 1200 ppmv CO, and 40,000 h   −   1 of GHSV. It was found that Fe doping could efficiently regulate Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ redox couple and oxygen vacancy for catalytic activity. XRD, Raman, XPS, EPR and H 2 -TPR etc. were employed to explore the physicochemical properties of samples. The results showed that Fe had been incorporated into CeO 2 by XRD, and the results of Raman spectrum and XPS indicated that Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ redox couple existed in 0.5Fe-CeO 2 catalyst. Furthermore, the H 2 -TPR spectrum displayed the formation of oxygen vacancy in the samples. N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms indicated that the doping of Fe could enlarge the specific surface area, pore volume and pore dimeter of the samples, and thus greatly enhanced the NO adsorption and further NO catalytic reduction on catalysts. In addition, other characterization of physicochemical properties and density functional theory (DFT) calculation were performed to reveal the mechanism of NO + CO reaction. As a result, a mechanism was proposed to elucidate highly efficient NO reduction over the catalysts of Fe decorated CeO 2 microspheres. Finally, the synergistic effects of redox center and oxygen vacancy on catalytic activity enhancement were revealed. This work provides a promising way to the design of efficient catalysts for NO reduction.

Fe(VI) oxidation of synthetic phenolic antioxidants: Kinetics, influencing factors, transformation mechanism and toxicity

Xiaoxue Pan,Fengtao Sun,Min Wang,Hong Sun,Rui Zhang,Mingbao Feng,Xuesheng Zhang

Synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) have been commonly used in industrial and domestic products to prevent the adverse effects of oxidants such as oxygen. However, attention to the removal of SPAs is scarcely attracted. In this paper, the removal kinetics, influencing factors, transformation mechanisms and toxicity in Fe(VI) oxidation of 18 SPA congeners were investigated in detail. Results showed that propyl gallate (PG), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), and tert -butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) had the highest reactivities with Fe(VI), while the reaction rate constant ( k app ) value of 2,4-di- tert -butylphenyl 3,5-di- tert -butyl-4-hydroxybenzoate (UV120) was the lowest (221.3 M −1 s −1 ). A robust quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) model between k app and molecular structural descriptors of SPAs was established. The energy gap between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital ( E LUMO ) and the highest occupied molecular orbital ( E HOMO ) was a vital parameter to determine the removal efficiencies of the SPA congeners. Furthermore, the numbers of oxygen atoms and alkyl groups in SPA structures also determined their reactivities with Fe(VI) to some extent. In addition, aqueous 2,6-di- tert -butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT, a representative of SPAs) could be efficiently removed with the increased amount of oxidant, and decreased substrate concentration and slightly alkaline conditions. Seventeen intermediates were identified, and oxidation routes including H-abstraction, single- and double-oxygen(s) transfer, and coupling were deduced. However, H-abstraction inevitably led to the generation of BHT-Q with higher toxicity than parent. These findings provide novel insights into the production and removal of SPA analogs.
