Core–Shell PMIA@PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 Nanofiber Mats In Situ Coaxial Electrospun on LiFePO4 Electrode as Matrices for Gel Electrolytes

Lei Wang,Jiawei Yan,Ran Zhang,Yanfang Li,Wenzhuo Shen,Jiali Zhang,Min Zhong,Shouwu Guo

Gel electrolytes show certain advantages over conventional liquid and solid electrolytes, but their mechanical strength and surface adhesion to the electrode remain to be improved. To address the challenges, we design and fabricate herein the core–shell nanofiber mats in situ on the LiFePO4 electrode as matrices for gel electrolytes, in which the core is poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) nanofiber and the shell are composite of Al2O3 nanoparticles and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP). The mechanical property of the core–shell polymeric nanofiber mats and their surface interaction with LiFePO4 electrode are characterized complementarily using dynamic thermomechanical analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical properties of the gel electrolytes based on the as-prepared matrices after being loaded with lithium salt solution are studied systematically on half coin cells. It is found that the ultimate strength of the core–shell PMIA@PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 mat can reach 6.70 MPa, 2 times higher than that of the PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 nanofiber mat. Meanwhile, the shell PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 can ensure manifest surface affinity to the LiFePO4 electrode and enhance lithium-ion conductance. Thus, the as-assembled LiFePO4 half coin cells using PMIA@PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 gel electrolyte show good electrochemical performances, especially the long cycle stability with the capacity retention of 96.6% after 600 cycles under 1C.

High-Resolution and High-Sensitivity Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensors Enhanced by a Transferable Electrode Array and a Micropillar–PVDF Film

Zebang Luo,Jing Chen,Zhengfang Zhu,Lin Li,Yi Su,Wei Tang,Olatunji Mumini Omisore,Lei Wang,Hui Li

Flexible pressure sensors have attracted increasing attention because they can mimic human skin to sense external pressure; however, for mimicking human skin, the sensing of a pressure point is far from sufficient. To realize fully biomimetic skins, it is crucial for flexible sensors to have high resolution and high sensitivity. We conducted simulations and experiments to determine the relationship between the sensor sensitivity and physical parameters, such as the effective relative permittivity and air ratio of the dielectric layer. According to the results, a micropillar–poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) dielectric layer was designed to achieve high sensitivity (0.43 kPa–1) in the low-pressure regime (<1 kPa). An 8 × 8 pixel sensor matrix was prepared based on a micropillar–PVDF (MP) film and electrode array (MPEA) to detect the pressure distribution with high resolution (13 dpi). Each pixel could reflect the point of applied pressure through an obvious change in the relative capacitance; moreover, objects with various geometries could be mapped by the pixels of the flexible sensor. A counterweight, a plastic flag, and pine leaves were placed on the flexible sensor, and the shapes were successfully mapped; in particular, the mapping of the ∼0.005 g ultra-lightweight pine leaves with a length of 7 mm and a width of 0.6 mm shows the high sensitivity and high resolution of our flexible pressure sensor.

Core-satellite ultra-small hybrid Ni@BT nanoparticles: A new route to enhanced energy storage capability of PVDF based nanocomposites

Guanliang Chen,Xiujuan Lin,Jianan Li,Shifeng Huang,Xin Cheng

Polymer-based composites comprising of high dielectric constant ceramic nanoparticles are widely used in dielectric capacitors due to their excellent energy storage and processing properties. In this study, ultra-small Ni nanoparticles were used to fabricate core-satellite structured hybrid Ni@BT nanoparticles. Compared with BT/PVDF composites, the Ni@BT/PVDF nanocomposites exhibited the enhanced energy storage properties due to the low electric conductivity, small dielectric loss and improved breakdown strength. The maximum discharged energy density reached 9.55 J/cm 3 for nanocomposites with 3 vol% Ni@BT at the electric field of 350 kV/mm, which was nearly eight times of commercial BOPP (1.2 J/cm 3 at 640 kV/mm) and was around 208% compared to the pristine PVDF (4.58 J/cm 3 at 340 kV/mm). The improved energy density of the nanocomposites could be attributed to the Coulomb-blockade effect of the introduced ultra-small Ni nanoparticles exactly. This work provides an effective approach to improve the energy storage property of dielectric nanocomposites.

Facile hydrophilic modification of PVDF membrane with Ag/EGCG decorated micro/nanostructural surface for efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation

Na Zhang,Na Yang,Luhong Zhang,Bin Jiang,Yongli Sun,Jingwen Ma,Kai Cheng,Feifei Peng

Wettability of porous materials is crucial for the separation of emulsified oil/water mixtures. Herein, high hydrophobicity of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane has been facilely transformed to high hydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity via single-step coating of plant-derived epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and silver ion (Ag + ) in aqueous solution. EGCG can chelate with Ag + and in-situ reduced it into Ag nanoparticle, meanwhile Ag/EGCG composite was adhered on membrane surface due to the high surface binding affinity of EGCG. The hydrophilic EGCG and formed micro/nanostructure together improved membrane hydrophilicity and oleophobicity. The optimally Ag/EGCG modified PVDF membrane possesses high permeate flux (e.g. 735 L/(m 2 h) for diesel-in-water emulsion, while it is zero for pristine PVDF membrane) under a low operation pressure of 0.5 bar and high oil rejections in the treatment of surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions consisting of micro/nano scale droplets. In addition, the membrane exhibits excellent antifouling property with a flux recovery ratio of 98.1% and satisfactory reusability in a 5-cycle test. Moreover, the membrane possessed desired stability during long-term rinsing test and Ag leaching test. This work would offer new insights into surface hydrophilic manipulation of porous membrane towards practical oil emulsion purification.

Robust functionalization of underwater superoleophobic PVDF-HFP tubular nanofiber membranes and applications for continuous dye degradation and oil/water separation

Xinya Wang,Changfa Xiao,Hailiang Liu,Mingxing Chen,Hongyan Xu,Wenpeng Luo,Fan Zhang

In this study, a novel and multifunctional polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropyle (PVDF-HFP)/catechol-polyethyleneimine (CA-PEI)/Ag/3-glycidyloxy propyltrimethoxysilane (KH560) tubular nanofiber membrane (TNM) for applications in dye degradation and oil/water separation was fabricated. Firstly, the PVDF-HFP tubular nanofiber membranes were modified by using a mussel-inspired method. Then, Ag nanoparticles were assembled on the nanofiber surface to improve their excellent catalytic capacity for Methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR). Finally, the hydrophilic KH560 was grafted on nanofiber surface and the effects of KH560 concentration on the membrane performance were investigated. The results showed that when the KH560 concentration was 3 wt%, the modified membranes possessed a higher hydrophilicity and permeability. Meanwhile, it could also effectively separate various oil-in-water emulsions with high separation rate and separation efficiency at 0.02 MPa. Moreover, the catalytic and oil/water separation performances had no discernible decay after ten cycle tests, which promoted the potential application of modified PVDF-HFP TNMs for the treatment of practical oily wastewater.

Direct-coating of cellulose hydrogel on PVDF membranes with superhydrophilic and antifouling properties for high-efficiency oil/water emulsion separation

Xiao Yu,Jing Ji,Qing-Yun Wu,Lin Gu

As a well-known natural and innocuous plant constituent, cellulose consists of abundant hydroxyl groups and can tightly adsorb onto material surfaces hydrogen bonding, resulting in a superhydrophilic surface. In this work, the hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were modified by immersing them in cellulose hydrogel using a simple one-step process. The modified PVDF membrane exhibited excellent resistance to fouling and oil adhesion, making it highly effective in separating various oil-in-water emulsions. The cellulose-modified PVDF membranes achieved a high oil rejection rate (>99 %) and a maximum separation flux of 2675.2 L·m −2 ·h −1 . Furthermore, even an oil-in-water emulsion containing bovine serum albumin maintained a steady permeation flux after four filtration cycles. Additionally, these cellulose-modified PVDF membranes demonstrated excellent underwater superoleophobicity across a wide range of pH levels and high saline conditions. Overall, these cellulose-modified superhydrophilic PVDF membranes are sustainable, environmentally friendly, easily scalable, and hold great promise for practical applications in oily wastewater treatment.

Temperature and photo sensitive PVDF-g-PNIPAAm/BN@PDA-Ag nanocomposite membranes with superior wasterwater separation and light-cleaning capabilities

Hongxu Liu,Junhao Xie,Jingxuan Zhao,Ruijia Wang,Yuchao Qi,Shulin Sun

Traditional water treatment membranes always face the problem of membrane contamination in the practical application. Those contaminants deposited on the membrane surface and inside the membrane pores make the filtration process more difficult. Herein, the temperature and photo sensitive nanocomposite membranes with superior wasterwater separation and light-cleaning capabilities were prepared by a non-solvent induced phase separation method, which combined the thermo-responsive property of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) grafted polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and the high photothermal conversion character of core–shell structured BN@PDA-Ag nanosheets. The membranes can be heated to high temperature within a short period of light exposure due to the fast photothermal conversion capability of Ag and the excellent thermal conductivity of boron nitride (BN). The increase in temperature led to the contraction of PNIPAAm chains and bigger pore size. The microstructure, filtration, and cleaning performance of the nanocomposite membranes can be controlled by illumination, which allowed PVDF-g-PNIPAAm/BN@PDA-Ag membranes to achieve the effect of first interception and then cleaning. The membranes showed retention rates of 82, 99 and 95 % for BSA, oil–water emulsions and various dyes with flux recovery rates of > 90 % after light cleaning. This work provides a simpler, more efficient membrane cleaning strategy with superior potential for dealing with membrane contamination.

LATP-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode with compatible interface with ultrathin PVDF-reinforced PEO-LLZTO electrolyte for stable solid-state lithium batteries

Xiao Chen,Yinda Li,Yunhao Lu,Jian Xie,Cheng Huang,Xiongwen Xu,Jian Tu,Xinbing Zhao,Tiejun Zhu

LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) is considered as a promising cathode for high-energy-density solid-sate Li metal battery for its high theoretical capacity. However, the high oxidizability and structural instability during charge limit its practical applications. In this work, 1% (in mass) of nanosized Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) was coated on NCM811 to enhance its electrochemical stability with a ceramic/polymer composite electrolyte. A robust, ultrathin (11 μm) composite electrolyte film was prepared by combining poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with polyethylene oxide (PEO)-Li 6.5 La 3 Zr 1.5 Ta 0.5 O 12 (LLZTO). An in-situ polymerization process was used to enhance the interface between the PVDF/PEO-LLZTO (PPL) composite electrolyte and the LATP-coated NCM811 (LATP-NCM811). Coin-type Li|LATP-NCM811 cell with the PPL electrolyte exhibits stable cycling with an 81% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. Pouch-type cell was also fabricated, which can be stably cycled for 70 cycles at 0.5 C/1.0 C (80% retention), and withstand abuse tests of bending, cutting and nail penetration. This work provides an applicable method to fabricate solid-state Li metal batteries with high performance.

Crystallization engineering in PVDF enables ultrastable and highly efficient CsPbBr3 quantum dots film for wide color gamut Mini-LED backlight

Kun He,Dejian Chen,Linfeng Yuan,Jiamin Xu,Kunyuan Xu,Jie Hu,Sisi Liang,Haomiao Zhu

The polymeric composite films incorporating inorganic lead halide perovskite quantum dots (CsPbX 3 QDs, X  = Cl, Br or I) are promising color conversion layers for wide gamut display devices such as Mini-LED backlight-based televisions. However, the relatively low emission efficiency and poor stability of these composite films present significant challenges for practical applications. In this study, we present a novel low-temperature in-situ crystallization strategy to prepare CsPbBr 3 /PVDF composite film through a rational designed of precursor, solvent and polymer structure. The strong interaction between PVDF and perovskite QDs via Lewis acid-base interaction allows for precise control over the crystallization and passivation of perovskite QDs. The optimized CsPbBr 3 /PVDF film exhibits bright emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of up to 70 %, surpassing those of other CsPbBr 3 /polymers counterparts. Furthermore, the films demonstrate remarkable stability, retaining over 90 % of their original PLQY even after 50 days of aging under various environmental conditions such as exposure to air, immersion in water and blue light irradiation. By integrating the green and red emissive CsPbX 3 /PVDF films with blue Mini-LEDs, we successfully fabricate a prototype liquid crystal display (LCD) with an outstanding wide color gamut (128 % of NTSC 1931). These performances outperform that of commercial white-LED-based LCDs, highlighting the immense potential of CsPbX 3 /PVDF for high-definition display applications in the future.

Effects of Porogen PEG and Pore Structure of PVDF Substrates on the Permeability–Selectivity Trade-off of TFC-NF Membranes

Chenyu Zhu,Xue Zhang,Fuzhi Li,Ruochen Yang,Xuan Zhao

Thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) has been widely utilized to separate monovalent ions from multivalent ions in industrial wastewater treatment. In this study, the pore properties of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrates were adjusted by varying the content and molecular weights (MWs) of porogen polyethylene glycol (PEG). The TFC membranes fabricated on different substrates showed distinguishable permeance and selectivity. The PVDF membranes with 2 kDa PEG of 0.5–3.0 wt % and 20 kDa PEG of 0.2 wt % were fit for the substrates of the TFC NF membrane. These substrates are usually characterized by evenly distributed surface pores with porosity of 7–12% and tiny finger-like pores of less than 15 μm length. Such pore structures in the substrates are fit for the storage and migration of amine monomers, resulting in a defect-free PA layer. In a 6 h filtration of mining wastewater using an optimized TFC membrane, the permeance remained around 5 LMH/bar and the separation factor of SO42–/Cl– stayed over 13.39 with a maximum value over 30. This study shed light on improving NF membrane performance by simply adjusting the porogen in the substrate casting solution.

Magnetic Field Effects on the Structure, Dielectric and Energy Storage Properties of High-Entropy Spinel Ferrite (La0.14Ce0.14Mn0.14Zr0.14Cu0.14Ca0.14Ni0.14)Fe2O4/PVDF Nanocomposites

Jiale Qiao,Haiwei Mu,Chao Liu,Zhaoting Liu

Energy depletion is one of the significant threats to global development. To increase the usability of clean energy, the energy storage performance of dielectric materials must be urgently enhanced. Semicrystalline ferroelectric polymer (PVDF) is the most promising candidate for the next generation of flexible dielectric materials thanks to its relatively high energy storage density. In this work, high-entropy spinel ferrite (La0.14Ce0.14Mn0.14Zr0.14Cu0.14Ca0.14Ni0.14Fe2O4) nanofibers (abbreviated 7FO NFs) were prepared by the sol-gel and electrostatic spinning methods, then blended with PVDF to prepare composite films using the coating method. A magnetic field was used to control the orientation distribution of the high-entropy spinel nanofibers in the PVDF matrix. We investigated the effects of the applied magnetic field and the content of high-entropy spinel ferrite on the structure, dielectric, and energy storage properties of the PVDF substrate films. The 3 vol% 7FO/PVDF film treated in a 0.8 T magnetic field for 3 min exhibited a good overall performance. The maximum discharge energy density was 6.23 J/cm3at 275 kV/mm and the efficiency was 58% with 51%β-phase content. In addition, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss were 13.3 and 0.035, respectively, at a frequency of 1 kHz.Keywords:dielectric constant;energy storage;high-entropy materials;PVDF-nanocomposites

Long-term stability of PVDF-SiO2-HDTMS composite hollow fiber membrane for carbon dioxide absorption in gas–liquid contacting process

Pang Honglei,Qiu Yayu,Sheng Weipeng

Hybrid polyvinylidene fluoride-silica-hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (PVDF-SiO 2 -HDTMS) membranes were fabricated via a non-solvent-induced phase-inversion method to create stable hollow-fiber membranes for use in the membrane contact absorption of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). The surface properties, performance characteristics, and long-term performance stability of the prepared membranes were compared and analyzed. The outer surfaces of the prepared membranes were superhydrophobic because of the formation of rough nanoscale microstructures on the surfaces and their low surface free energy. The addition of inorganic nanoparticles improved the mechanical strength of the PVDF-SiO 2 -HDTMS. Long-term stable operation experiments were carried out with a mixed inlet gas (CO 2 /N 2  = 19/81, v/v) at a flow rate of 20 mL/min. The absorbent liquid in these experiments was 1 mol/L diethanolamine (DEA) at a flow rate of 50 mL/min. The mass transfer flux of CO 2 through the PVDF-SiO 2 -HDTMS membrane decreased from an initial value of 2.39 × 10 –3  mol/m 2 s to 2.31 × 10 –3  mol/m 2 s, a decrease of 3% after 20 days. The addition of highly stable and hydrophobic inorganic nanoparticles prevented pore wetting and structural damage to the membrane. The PVDF-SiO 2 -HDTMS membrane was found to have excellent long-term stable performance in absorbing CO 2 .
