Biomimetic materials are receiving increasing attention as potential candidates for secondary battery systems owing to unique structures and properties. Here, we develop a biomimetic composite composing of sea anemone-shaped hollow SnO 2 in-situ co-coating with ZnCo 2 O 4 nanoparticles encapsulated by a carbon shell. The biomimetic SnO 2 @ZnCo 2 O 4 @C-based Li-ion battery anode shows a stable capacity of 700 mAh g −1 after 350 cycles, a Coulombic efficiency exceeding 99% and a repeatable rate-performance. Low reaction barriers and rapid diffusion kinetics of Li ions are verified by using galvanostatic intermittent titration technique analysis. Moreover, a full cell composing of a SnO 2 @ZnCo 2 O 4 @C anode and a LiCoO 2 cathode exhibits 520 mAh g −1 ; while working as a slurry battery anode, the sea anemone-shaped SnO 2 @ZnCo 2 O 4 @C also displays high capacity and Coulombic efficiency after 100 cycles. The high performances of the biomimetic composite when working at different battery systems enable it to be applicable broadly.

Ti/TiO 2 NTs/SnO 2 –Sb–Mo anode was prepared by adding intermediate layers and elemental doping and GF/Cu–C 3 N 4 cathode was prepared by impregnation method. The electrode was characterized by SEM, XRD, LSV, CV, and EIS, which show that a more uniform and finer-grained surface structure with higher electrocatalytic activity can be prepared by doping and the addition of TiO 2 -NTs interlayer. In addition, the cathode demonstrate the successful loading of Cu–C 3 N 4 on graphite felts (GFs) by SEM and EDS. The electrochemical test shows the high electrochemical activity. The high activity of the two-electrode system was verified according to the hydroxyl radical test, and then the two electrodes were applied to the degradation of 50 mg/L methylene blue wastewater at the same time, and the results showed that the degradation rate was 98.09% in 20 min, and the COD removal was as high as 80.11%, which is 1.33 times and 2.83 times of the single-anode and single-cathode systems, respectively. In addition, the system could show excellent degradation performance in a wide pH range. At the same time, the energy consumption of the two-electrode system is only 110.9 KWh/Kg. Finally, after ten consecutive decolorization experiments, the decolorization rate of methylene blue and the removal rate of COD could still reach 90.5% and 68.7% in 20 min, which indicated that the dual-electrode system had excellent reusability. The study opens a door to the practical application of electrochemical treatment of wastewater.

Oxygen vacancies induce charge redistribution, facilitating oxygen adsorption. • S-scheme heterojunctions enable efficient charge separation while retaining high redox potential. • The dual-electron transfer pathway facilitates the rapid electron transfer to O 2 . • Lowered thermodynamic barrier of the rate-determining step by modulation of ROSs generation. Transition metal stannates are promising for efficient air purification due to their remarkable activity in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) degradation. However, the interfacial charge-transfer behavior and the fundamental mechanism of aromatic ring activation, specifically, C-H bond cleavage and ring-opening oxidation remain elusive, hindering rational catalyst design for toluene (C 7 H 8 ) mineralization. Herein, an oxygen-vacancy-enriched S-scheme heterojunction (SMSH-30) is constructed via a facile one-step hydrothermal strategy. The optimized heterostructure exhibits outstanding toluene removal (96.65%), mineralization efficiency (101.8%), and long-term stability (>600 min). Combined experimental and theoretical analyses unveil that oxygen vacancies (OVs) modulate charge transfer and reactive oxygen species (ROS) evolution: (1) OVs induce dual-channel electron migration, greatly facilitating interfacial charge transfer; (2) this enhanced transfer promotes O 2 activation into highly oxidative singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ); and (3) the optimized interface accelerates intermediate conversion with a favorable Gibbs free energy profile. This work provides molecular-level insights into charge dynamics and ROS modulation within S-scheme heterojunctions, offering a new paradigm for rational design of advanced photocatalysts toward deep VOC mineralization and sustainable air purification. Download: Download high-res image (156KB) Download: Download full-size image Combined experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations revealed that oxygen vacancies serve as continuous O 2 activation centers, while the S-scheme interface promotes efficient charge separation and preserves high-redox-potential electrons for singlet oxygen generation toward complete anti-poisoning mineralization of toluene.

Herein, we propose a ZnO and Pt co-modification strategy to boost the NO 2 sensing performance of SnO 2 . Specifically, a ternary Pt/ZnO/SnO 2 composite was prepared by sequentially decorating ZnO and Pt nanoparticles onto a porous nanorod-assembled hierarchical structure (PNRHS) of SnO 2 . The resulting Pt/ZnO/SnO 2 composites were characterized using various techniques, and their sensing properties to NO 2 were investigated. The results reveal that after co-modification with ZnO and Pt, the SnO 2 sensor exhibits remarkable performance enhancements in detecting sub-ppm-level NO 2 , including significantly improved sensitivity, superior gas discrimination capability, and accelerated response kinetics. At its optimal working temperature of 140 °C, the optimized Pt/ZnO/SnO 2 sensor demonstrates a response of 105.6–1 ppm NO 2 , approximately 42.2, 7.4, and 7.9 times than that of the pure SnO 2 (2.5 at 120 °C), ZnO/SnO 2 (14.3 at 150 °C), and Pt/SnO 2 (13.3 at 140 °C) sensors, respectively. The enhanced NO 2 sensitivity of the ternary Pt/ZnO/SnO 2 composite sensor is attributed to the synergistic sensitization effects of the ZnO and Pt modifiers, whose underlying mechanisms are discussed.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been commercialized, but their elevated costs and inadequate catalytic efficiencies for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have hindered broader use. Metal oxides demonstrate high stability and water retention, as well as strong interactions with metal nanoparticles. However, their conductivities and surface areas are lower than those of carbon. This study introduces a novel Pt–oxide–carbon composite ORR catalyst. The Pt nanoparticles were anchored to a W0.02–SnO2–C substrate and demonstrated significantly higher stability and catalytic activity. The composite electrocatalyst exhibited a mass activity (MA) of 0.23 A mgpt−1 at 0.9 V (vs. RHE). The use of Pt/W0.02–SnO2–C as the cathode in a fuel-cell assessment (under H2–air conditions at 80 °C) resulted in a peak power density of 1.04 W cm2, and 89.2% of the initial value was retained after 50 000 cycles over the potential range 0.60–0.95 V. Due to the electronic metal–support interaction (EMSI) between Pt and W0.02–SnO2–C, electron transfer from Pt to the support was accelerated. This diminished the surface electron density of Pt and inhibited the dissolution of Pt nanoparticles. Thermogravimetric (TG) analyses were also conducted to examine the water losses from the W–SnO2–C and pure XC-72R carbon black samples at high temperatures. The water weight in W0.02–SnO2–C decreased by 15.3%, which was lower than the 18.8% decrease from XC-72R. Additionally, in the membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) tested at 100% RH and 60% RH, the peak power density of the fuel cell with Pt/W0.02–SnO2–C was decreased by 13.7% at 60%, in contrast to the 25.1% reduction observed for JM Pt/C. These findings highlight the superior water retention of W0.02–SnO2–C, which expedited proton transfer in the catalytic layer. This improvement enhanced the catalytic performance, offering significant advantages for practical PEMFCs.

The effect of high- and low-valence doping on adsorbed oxygen has been studied and intensely discussed for decades, in which the high-valence dopant can provide more electrons for ionosorbed oxygen species while low-valence dopant can provide more adsorption sites. In this work, this effect is observed directly by Quasi in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and CO temperature-programmed reduction, and rationalized by density functional theory calculations. It is found that the oxygen vacancies can be easier to generate on Co-doped SnO 2 surface, but the decrease in surface electron concentration actually reduces the amount of adsorbed oxygen at working temperature while Sb-doped SnO 2 is more conducive to oxygen adsorption but the enormous electron concentration makes the resistance variation caused by the surface reactions insignificant. In order to combine the advantages of both dopants, Sb-doped SnO 2 @Co-doped SnO 2 core-shell structure are designed and prepared. The synergism of the core and shell can enhance sensing reactions on the surface while efficiently converting the surface reactions into a resistance change. On the one hand, the electron diffusion from the electron-rich core to the shell provides the electrons required for oxygen adsorption, which ensures sufficient surface reactions. On the other hand, a potential barrier is formed between the core and shell which can regulate electron transport between adjacent cores, thereby effectively converting the surface reaction into a resistance change.

Planar structures for halide perovskite solar cells with the high efficiencies typically use high-temperature processed TiO 2 as the electron transporting layers (ETLs). Here, we demonstrate that an in-situ passivation strategy for TiO 2 film through the introduction of HI during low-temperature preparation process. HI not only controls hydrolysis of TiO 2 precursor but also eliminates defects and suppresses trap states in TiO 2 film. Meanwhile, the double-layer architecture is constructed by coating TiO 2 with SnO 2 layer, the double ETLs can improve the photovoltaic performance of methylamine lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite solar cells. The TiO 2 (HI)/SnO 2 ETL can effectively reduce the interfacial charge recombination and facilitate electron transfer. More importantly, the preparation of TiO 2 and SnO 2 are totally performed at low-temperature (150 °C) and the devices are fabricated in uncontrolled ambient conditions. Our best-performing planar perovskite cell using such a TiO 2 (HI)/SnO 2 ETL has achieved a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.74%, and the devices exhibit good stability which maintaining 85% and 83% of their initial efficiency after heating at 100 °C for 22 h and under illuminating upon 1 sun irradiation for 6 h, respectively. Our results suggest a new approach for further improving the stability of PSCs fabricated in the air condition.

For widely used semiconductor-based chemoresistive sensors, low sensitivity and poor anti-interference in the complex environment (humidity resistance, etc. ) are two main constraints of application. To enhance the sensitivity, many effective strategies have been developed such as constructing heterostructures with synergistic effects, introducing abundant oxygen vacancies as active sites, designing hollow/cavity structure to increase surface area to facilitate target gas adsorption, and so on. Besides, the interference caused by water vapor can be blocked. via MOF or molecular sieve membranes but is accompanied with the shielding of some target molecules. The above methods are faced with the problems of complex process, large workload of material screening and failure to maintain the device stability. Hence, an effective vapor-phase method derived N-C@SnO 2 -Co 3 O 4 complex that combined the hydrophobicity , acetone selectivity, p-n heterostructure with mesoporous hollow characteristics was proposed, named mesoporous N-C@SnO 2 -Co 3 O 4 hollow nanoboxes (HNBs). Particularly, the chemoresistive sensor based on N-C@SnO 2 -Co 3 O 4 HNBs (2.0%) showed satisfactory selectivity to acetone vapor at relatively low working temperature (160 °C), and the response remained stable even under high humidity (with the R.H. of 90%). Impressively, a three-fold enhancement in response signal was observed for the sensor based on N-C@SnO 2 -Co 3 O 4 HNBs when compared with its counterpart of SnO 2 -Co 3 O 4 , which can be ascribed to the consequent unpaired electrons from oxygen vacancies and hollow mesoporous structures. Additionally, a sensing prototype based on the N-C@SnO 2 -Co 3 O 4 HNBs was practically fabricated. The satisfactory sensing response and stability further verified the potential applications in industrial acetone detection. This facile vapor-phase approach sheds light on designing sensing materials with enhanced sensitivity and humidity resistance, as well as device stability simultaneously.

TiO 2 is a promising lithium-ion battery anode due to its good operation safety enabled by its voltage profile. However, the intrinsically low electronic/ionic conductivity and moderate reversible capacity compromise its potential for practical applications. It is proposed in this work to incorporate super-small sized metallic high capacity tin-based nanoparticles into TiO 2 /carbon nanohybrids, coupled with in situ generation of mesoporous structures. Difunctional methacrylate resin monomers are used as the solvent and carbon source, followed by carbonization and hydrofluoric (HF) etching treatment. The precursors of TiO 2 , tin-based component, and SiO x porogen agent are homogeneously integrated into the cross-linking network at a molecular level. High reversible capacities, excellent rate capability, and good capacity retention are achieved simultaneously due to synergistic effects from the tin-based component bearing high capacity and good electron conductivity, and mechanical buffer medium of the mesoporous structures. Reversible capacities of 452 mAh g −1 are achieved after 400 cycles at 200 mA g −1 . High rate capacity of 131 mAh g −1 is maintained at 5 A g −1 . The overall capacities are increased by more than 2 times compared with the capacities of the tin-free TiO 2 /C and pristine TiO 2 /SnO 2 /Sn/SiO x /C nanohybrids.

Illicit methamphetamine (MA, ice) trafficking poses a severe global threat to public security, while non-contact on-site detection of MA remains a grand challenge due to its ultra-low saturated vapor pressure at room temperature (25 ° C). Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), including hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), methanethiol (CH 3 SH), and dimethyl sulfide (C 2 H 6 S, DMS), are stable characteristic markers released throughout the entire MA production, purification, storage, and transportation chain. Herein, we develop a single-sensor virtual electronic nose based on SnSe/SnO 2 p-n heterojunction for precise VSC identification in illicit MA scenarios. The SnSe/SnO 2 heterojunction, synthesized via a facile liquid-phase ultrasonic method, exhibits significantly enhanced room-temperature H 2 S sensing adsorption kinetics, delivering a high response of 2.57 (response = R a / R g , where R a is the resistance in air and R g is the resistance in the atmosphere, including H 2 S and air) to 2.5 ppm H 2 S in air, a low detection limit of 75 ppb, excellent anti-sulfur poisoning ability, and long-term stability. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we reveal that interfacial charge redistribution in SnSe/SnO 2 optimizes reactant adsorption energy, lowers the energy barrier of electronic modulation during H 2 S interactions to only 0.157 eV, and amplifies the adsorption–desorption kinetic differences between distinct VSCs. By extracting 12-dimensional static features from single-device response curves without any external modulation, we construct a PCA-KNN machine learning framework that achieves an overall identification accuracy of 79.65% for six VSC systems, with an ultra-high accuracy of 96.7% for target H 2 S even in complex mixtures. By circumventing the inter-sensor variance and complexities typical of multi-sensor arrays, this single-sensor virtual electronic nose provides a highly integrated, physically compact, and high-precision solution for on-site non-contact traceability of illicit MA trafficking.

Perovskite solar cells’ performance is critically governed by interfacial chemistry. Here, we combine correlation analysis, hierarchical clustering, and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression to optimize feature engineering, followed by employing LASSO and elastic net (ENET) regression to develop a screening model. A multifunctional buried interface molecule, (2-(1,3-dioxo-1 H -benzo[ de ]isoquinolin-2(3H)-yl)ethyl)phosphonic acid (BIPA), was successfully screened and synthesized. As expected, BIPA binds strongly with SnO 2 through Sn···O–P coordination, effectively passivating Sn 2+ dangling bonds and oxygen vacancies. The Fermi level was shifted upward, facilitating electron extraction. Besides, BIPA modulated crystallization dynamics and alleviated compressive strain through C=O···Pb interaction, enabling the growth of dense perovskite films. Consequently, the BIPA-modified device achieved an efficiency of 26.3%. Varied band-gap performance improvements (23.2% for 1.67 eV and 18.5% for 1.85 eV) further underscored the universality of this approach. Unencapsulated devices retained 91% and 92% of their initial efficiency after 1,600 h of International Summit on Organic Photovoltaic Stability (ISOS-L-1) protocol and 2,000 h of ISOS-D-2 protocol, respectively.

Highly efficient strategies for the transformation of amorphous carbon into graphite with high graphitization and crystallinity features have been significantly pursued in recent years; however, critical issues, including high processing temperature, insufficient graphitization, introduction of catalyst impurities, complicated post-purification procedures, and generation of greenhouse gas, still remain in traditional approaches. For significantly addressing these challenges, herein, a highly efficient catalyst-free, eco-friendly and low-temperature electrochemical transformation strategy was proposed for the preparation of highly graphitized porous graphite nanoflakes. Using inert SnO2 as an anode in CaCl2-LiCl molten salts, the graphitization transformation of amorphous carbon materials could be realized at 700 °C, approaching the record in high-efficiency converting amorphous carbon to graphite; moreover, systematical analysis was performed to understand the electrochemical transformation of amorphous carbon into highly graphitized graphite nanoflakes. For extending their valuable applications, the as-prepared graphite nanoflakes were further utilized as cathodes in aluminum-ion batteries, which exhibited significantly promising energy storage performance; moreover, an initial discharge capacity of 63.6 mA h g−1 at a current density of 200 mA g−1 was achieved, which eventually became 55.5 mA h g−1 with a coulombic efficiency of 95.4% after 1000 cycles; thus, these cathodes exhibited stable long-term cycling performance. The combination of low-temperature electrochemical transformation and the subsequent high-performance applications of these nanoflakes in energy storage indicates that the proposed strategy is highly efficient for the transformation and utilization of abundant amorphous carbon resources for the realization of high value-added applications.
