Photocatalytic microreactors based on nano TiO2-containing clay colloidosomes

Sen Lin,Shiyong Sun,Kexuan Shen,Daoyong Tan,Hongping Zhang,Faqin Dong,Xiaoxin Fu

Photocatalytic microcompartments have attracted increasing interests in the field of photocatalytic degradation . This work focused on the construction and characterization of a novel photocatalytic microsystem comprising polydopamine-modified TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed in clay-based colloidosomes, utilizing partially hydrophobic montmorillonite particles as building blocks for colloidosome membrane assembly. Assessment of photocatalytic activity was performed by photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and rhodamine B, with the small molecule dyes decomposing within the compartmentalized microsystems. Encapsulation of TiO 2 NPs within the clay colloidosomes enhanced the efficiency of photocatalytic degradation. The results showed a selective degradation of methylene blue in the presence of rhodamine B, with associated λ MB /λ RhB of 2.04. The present study indicates that photocatalytic semiconductor NPs encapsulated in clay colloidosomes form a promising microsystem with great potential for application in environmental remediation.

Honghui Guo,Jie Zhang,Jian Gao,Ziyu Liang,Wei Li,Hong Yan,Ruijie Guo,Huifang Wang

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared by top-down hydrothermal method by corn stalks as a carbon source. The CQDs were composited with titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) to improve its antibacterial properties under visible light. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by UV–Vis, EA, PL, TEM, XRD, FT-IR and XPS. PL analysis showed that the prepared CQDs had good upconversion fluorescence properties. FTIR and XPS demonstrated that the CQDs were successfully loaded onto the surface of TiO 2 , which were connected by C-O-Ti bonds. Finally, the effect of CQDs on the photocatalytic and antimicrobial properties of TiO 2 was evaluated.

Friction Reduction Achieved by Ultraviolet Illumination on TiO2 Surface

Xiao Sang,Ke Han,Manfu Zhu,Liran Ma

Controlling friction by light field is a low-cost, low-energy, non-polluting method. By applying ultraviolet light on the surface of photosensitive materials, the properties of the friction pairs or lubricant can be influenced, thus achieving the purpose of reducing friction. In this study, TiO2, an inorganic photosensitive material, was selected to investigate the modulating effect of light fields on friction lubrication when using polyalphaolefin (PAO) base oil as a lubricant, and the modulation law of light fields on the friction lubrication behavior was investigated under different loads (1–8 N), different speeds (20–380 mm/s), and different viscosities (10.1–108.6 mPa·s) of PAO base oil. The experimental results showed that light treatment could reduce the friction coefficient of PAO4 base oil lubrication from 0.034 to 0.016, with a reduction of 52.9% under conditions of 3 N-load and 56.5 mm/s-speed, and the best regulation effect could be achieved under the mixed lubrication condition. After TiO2was treated with ultraviolet light, due to its photocatalytic property, PAO molecules were oxidized and adsorbed on the TiO2surface to form an adsorption layer, which avoided the direct contact of rough peaks and thus reduced the friction coefficient. This study combines photosensitivity, photocatalysis, and friction, presenting a method to reduce the friction coefficient by applying a light field without changing the friction pairs or lubricants, which provides a new direction for friction modulation and gives new ideas for practical applications.

Ferromagnetic Fe-TiO2 spin catalysts for enhanced ammonia electrosynthesis

Wang Jingnan,Zhao Kaiheng,Yao Yongbin,Xue Fan,Lu Fei,Yan Wensheng,Yuan Fangli,Wang Xi

Magnetic field effects (MFE) of ferromagnetic spin electrocatalysts have attracted significant attention due to their potential to enhance catalytic activity under an external magnetic field. However, no ferromagnetic spin catalysts have demonstrated MFE in the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate for ammonia (NO 3 RR), a pioneering approach towards NH 3 production involving the conversion from diamagnetic NO 3 − to paramagnetic NO. Here, we report the ferromagnetic Fe-TiO 2 to investigate MFE on NO 3 RR. Fe-TiO 2 possesses a high density of atomically dispersed Fe sites and exhibits an intermediate-spin state, resulting in magnetic ordering through ferromagnetism. Assisted by a magnetic field, Fe-TiO 2 achieves a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of up to 97% and an NH 3 yield of 24.69 mg mg cat − 1 at −0.5 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Compared to conditions without an external magnetic field, the FE and NH 3 yield for Fe-TiO 2 under an external magnetic field is increased by ~21.8% and ~ 3.1 times, respectively. In-situ characterization and theoretical calculations show that spin polarization enhances the critical step of NO hydrogenation to NOH by optimizing electron transfer pathways between Fe and NO, significantly boosting NO 3 RR activity.

Oxygen vacancy enhanced photocatalytic activity of Cu2O/TiO2 heterojunction

Hong Qian,Binxia Yuan,Yuhao Liu,Rui Zhu,Weiling Luan,Chengxi Zhang

In this study, a method was developed to create oxygen vacancies in Cu 2 O/TiO 2 heterojunctions. By varying the amounts of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), sodium citrate, and copper acetate, Cu 2 O/TiO 2 with different Cu ratios were synthesized. Tests on CO 2 photocatalytic reduction revealed that Cu 2 O/TiO 2 ’s performance is influenced by Cu content. The ideal Cu mass fraction in Cu 2 O/TiO 2 , determined by inductively coupled plasma (ICP), is between 0.075% and 0.55%, with the highest CO yield being 10.22 μmol g −1 h −1 , significantly surpassing pure TiO 2 . High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance studies showed optimal oxygen vacancy in the most effective heterojunction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated a 0.088 eV lower energy barrier for ∗CO 2 to ∗COOH conversion in Cu 2 O/TiO 2 with oxygen vacancy compared to TiO 2 , suggesting that oxygen vacancies enhance photocatalytic activity.

Nanoparticulate TiO2-promoted PtRu/C catalyst for methanol oxidation

Wang Wei,Wang Hui,Key Julian,Linkov Vladimir,Ji Shan,Wang Rongfang

To improve the electrocatalytic properties of PtRu/C in methanol electrooxidation, nanoparticulate TiO 2 -promoted PtRu/C catalysts were prepared by directly mixing TiO 2 nanoparticles with PtRu/C. Using cyclic voltammetry, it was found that the addition of 10 wt% TiO 2 nanoparticles can effectively improve the electrocatalytic activity and stability of the catalyst during methanol electrooxidation. The value of the apparent activation energy ( E a ) for TiO 2 -PtRu/C was lower than that for pure PtRu/C at a potential range from 0.45 to 0.60 V. A synergistic effect between PtRu and TiO 2 nanoparticles is likely to facilitate the removal of CO-like intermediates from the surface of PtRu catalyst and reduce the poisoning of the PtRu catalysts during methanol electrooxidation. Therefore, we conclude that the direct introduction of TiO 2 nanoparticles into PtRu/C catalysts offers an improved facile method to enhance the electrocatalytic performance of PtRu/C catalyst in methanol electrooxidation.

Plasmonic Au–TiO2 interactions for augmented photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Chaogang Ban,Bing Li,Jiangping Ma,Yajie Feng,Chi Lin,Yu Chen,Yang Wang,Youyu Duan,Kai Zhou,Liyong Gan,Shaoming Wang,Xiaoyuan Zhou

The overreliance on non-renewable energy sources like fossil fuels has led to severe energy crises and environmental pollution, hindering sustainable development. Harnessing solar energy for water splitting through semiconductor photocatalysts offers a promising solution. Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), a benchmark photocatalyst, is favored for its cost-effectiveness, non-toxicity, and stability under ultraviolet light. However, its weak light absorption, limited range, and high carrier recombination rates pose challenges. Herein, we designed an Au nanoparticle modified TiO 2 (Au/TiO 2 ) using a two-step method involving initial stirring adsorption followed by calcination . This composite material exhibits a localized surface plasmon resonance property, demonstrating powerful light absorption capacity in both the visible and near infrared regions. Moreover, following the decoration of Au nanoparticles, in situ XPS reveal Au/TiO 2 exhibits a metal-support interaction, thereby enhancing the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers and decreasing the recombination rate of photogenerated charges. Thus, Au/TiO 2 shows a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 47.89 mmol g −1  h −1 , which is 39.25 times higher than that (1.22 mmol g −1  h −1 ) of pristine TiO 2 and among the top rankings of TiO 2 -based photocatalysts. This study provides a novel approach to developing a photocatalyst capable of absorbing a broad spectrum of solar energy.

Near-infrared light-mediated DOX-UCNPs@mHTiO2 nanocomposite for chemo/photodynamic therapy and imaging

Yuhua Chen,Huiming Lin,Ruihan Tong,Na An,Fengyu Qu

Recently, incorporating multiple components into one nanoplatform for anticancer theranostics has attracted most attention. Herein, a rattle-structured nanocomposite by using UCNPs (NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm@NaYF 4 ) as core coated with hollow mesoporous TiO 2 (UCNPs@mHTiO 2 ) was constructed as the nanocarrier. First, UCNPs@SiO 2 @TiO 2 was prepared, by a selective etching method to remove SiO 2 shell, to make sure the hollow mesoporous structure and high surface area (347   m 2   g −1 ) of UCNPs@mHTiO 2 . Under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, the UV emission can excite TiO 2 to produce ROS and to realize photodynamic therapy (PDT). In addition, the hollow structure offers space to store antitumor drug molecules (doxorubicin, DOX) and this nanocomposite also exhibits the improved DOX release in mildly acidic environment, which could greatly promote chemotherapy efficiency. Moreover, the luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) from UCNPs to DOX, owing to the effective distance restricted by the cavity, can be used to monitor the intercellular drug release kinetics. HeLa cells were used as the model cancer cells and the detailed cell experiments show the enhanced cytotoxicity, ascribing to the synergistic effect of chemotherapy and PDT. Therefore, the novel multifunctional nanocomposite, combining with chemotherapy, PDT, and imaging, should be a potential candidate in anticancer field.

Photocatalytic double-sided adhesives: preparation, photocatalytic degradation of dye solutions and durable performance

Shenglei Feng,Miaomiao Zhu,Yu Ning,Huisen Dong,Hanshuo Wei,Xiaoying Liang,Jielu Zhu

To overcome the issues of difficult dispersion and recovery of powdered photocatalytic catalysts and secondary pollution, a double-sided adhesive loaded with TiO2/g-C3N4 photocatalytic material was prepared by a brushing method. The photocatalytic double-sided adhesive (PDSA) was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), contact angle analysis, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and fluorescence spectroscopy (PL). The degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) was used to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of the PDSA. The best degradation of 96.96% after 2 h illumination and ultrasound treatment was achieved when the conditions were 10 mg L−1 RhB solution, 10 mL, 25 °C and pH = 7. Quenching agent experiments determined that ˙O2− and ˙OH were the main active species. The effect of impurity ions and soaking in acidic/alkaline solution on PDSA degradation was evaluated. After 5 cycles of degradation experiments, the degradation efficiency of PDSA was still up to 96.55%. This study provides a new solution for the loading of powdered photocatalysts.

Preparation of molecular selective GO/DTiO2-PDA-PEI composite nanofiltration membrane for highly pure dye separation

Yanqing Xu,Guibin Peng,Junbin Liao,Jiangnan Shen,Congjie Gao

The state-of-the-art graphene oxide (GO) has been wildly used in water purification due to its tunable nanoscale interlayer between the two-dimensional nanosheets . However, the structural instability and flux decline performances significantly limit the practical application of GO-based membranes. Herein, a novel GO/DTiO 2 -PDA-PEI (dopamine modified TiO 2 ) composite nanofiltration membrane has been prepared via a multi-coupled strategy, combining with the self-assembly, copolymerization and surface grafting. Tuning the nanoscale interspace between the GO nanosheets , and constructing the membrane with positively charged surface and negatively charged subsurface, the loose GO/DTiO 2 -PDA-PEI composite nanofiltration membrane (GDP 1 P 2 -0.6 membrane with a mean pore size = 0.87 nm) show the filtration performance with water permeance as high as 41.6 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and dye rejection around 99.9%, and the molecular selective factor (Eriochrome black T/Na 2 SO 4 ) of α = 47.6. Long-term performance and stimulation have been investigated to further analyze the dye concentration and salt removing. The investigations demonstrate that the GO/DTiO 2 -PDA-PEI composite nanofiltration membrane enriches 14.9-fold Eriochrome black T (ET) and reduces Na 2 SO 4 to 0.36% in the term of the concentration factor 15 and batch diafiltration factor 5.

Combining the post synthesis ligand-assisted technique and SILAR method to assemble the quantum dots onto the oxide semiconductor photoelectrodes and its applications for solar cells

Qingqing Qiu,Yifan Chen,Qiannan Wu,Ping Wang,Dejun Wang,Yanhong Lin,Tengfeng Xie

The inverted type-I CdS-CdSe core-shell structure quantum dots (QDs) (denoted as CdS-CdSe QDs) applied in QDs sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) has attracted wide attention and researches due to its special photoelectric properties. But this post synthesis ligand-assisted (PSLA) technique need to assemble the previously prepared QDs onto the photoanode, leads to the low loadings of QDs and poor photoelectric performances of solar cells. Hence, we elaborately combine the PSLA technique and successive ionic layer absorption and reaction (SILAR) method to assemble the QDs onto the photoanode to improve the loadings of QDs and photoelectric properties of solar cells. The anatase TiO 2 nanowires (NWs) electrode deposited with CdS-CdSe core-shell QDs and CdSe QDs (denoted as CdS-CdSe/CdSe QDs) was successfully prepared by combining the post synthesis ligand-assisted technique and SILAR method. The surface photovoltage (SPV), the transient photovoltage (TPV) and transient photocurrent (TPC) techniques were applied to systematically study the dynamics of charge separation and transfer. These measurements demonstrate that CdS-CdSe/CdSe QDs sensitized TiO 2 NWs photoelectrodes exhibits favorable separation efficiency due to the increase of sunlight utilization. With the polysulfide electrolyte, the maximum photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) with the enhanced short circuit current (J sc ) of 17.76 mA/cm −2 for the CdS-CdSe/CdSe QDs and the J sc of 11.4 mA/cm −2 for pure CdS-CdSe QDs were obtained under illumination at 100 mW/cm 2 . To enhance the PCE, the TiO 2 NWs was optimized by N-doped and the optimized PCE of 3.13% with 18.22 mA/cm 2 of J sc was achieved for the QDSCs deposited with CdS-CdSe/CdSe QDs.

Constructing Antifouling Hybrid Membranes with Hierarchical Hybrid Nanoparticles for Oil-in-Water Emulsion Separation

Xueting Zhao,Ning Jia,Lijuan Cheng,Ruoxi Wang,Congjie Gao

The development of antifouling membranes plays a vital role in the widespread application of membrane technology, and the hybridization strategy has attracted a significant amount of attention for antifouling applications. In this work, TA/PEI@TiO2 hierarchical hybrid nanoparticles (TPTi HHNs) are first synthesized through a simple strategy combining the multiple catechol chemistries of phenolic tannic acid (TA) with the biomimetic mineralization chemistry of titania. The TPTi HHNs are used as nanofillers to prepare PVDF/TPTi hybrid membranes. The TPTi HHNs endow the membrane with higher porosity, hierarchical roughness, greater hydrophilicity, and underwater superoleophobicity. Upon TPTi HHN loading, the PVDF/TPTi hybrid membranes exhibit enhanced antifouling performance. The flux recovery ratio can reach 92% when utilized to separate oil-in-water emulsion. Even being applied to the three-cycle filtration of oil-in-water emulsion with much higher concentration, the PVDF/TPTi membrane can still maintain a high flux recovery ratio about 85%. This study will provide a facial polyphenol-based platform to fabricate antifouling hybrid nanofillers and antifouling hybrid membranes with promising applications in oil/water separation.
