Due to their excellent biocompatibility and suitable elastic modulus, carbon–carbon composites have excellent prospects for a wide range of applications such as artificial joints and bone replacements. However, the hydrophobicity and poor bioactivity limit their application in bone repair and substitution. Herein, a two-step surface modification of carbon–carbon composites was proposed to overcome these disadvantages. A polydopamine (PDA) layer was first deposited on the surface of carbon–carbon composites, followed by covalent coupling with arginine–glycine–aspartic acid (RGD) in varying concentrations. The surface-modified materials were characterized using a variety of techniques including water contact angle, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and protein adsorption. In addition, the cellular proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity, and real-time quantitative PCR (RT-PCR) analysis were further tested in vitro. The results indicated that polydopamine and RGD nanoparticles formed on the surface, which significantly enhanced the hydrophilicity following modification. The RGD–PDA-coated carbon–carbon composites exhibited excellent roughness, protein adsorption behavior, and uniform morphology when a concentration of 50 µg/mL RGD was used, unlike blank and polydopamine-modified carbon–carbon composites. The in vitro cell co-culture experiments demonstrated that proliferation and alkaline phosphatase expression in osteoblasts was greatly improved after RGD–PDA coating. The RT-PCR results revealed that the expression of differentiation markers (alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin) in cells on the RGD–PDA-coated carbon–carbon composites was higher than that on the blank and polydopamine-modified carbon–carbon composites, indicating that the RGD–PDA coating could support cell proliferation and promote osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. In particular, the cells cultured on this material grew linearly along the morphological features of the material, which was effective for the subsequent regulation of cell growth. Our study suggested that the RGD–PDA coating was an effective method of enhancing the hydrophobicity and the cellular bioactivity of carbon–carbon composites, thus extending applications of carbon–carbon composites to the bone repair field.

17β-estradiol (E2), as one of the pharmaceutical and personal care product , frequently contaminates environmental water as estrogen pollutant and possesses great risk to human survival as well as the sustainable development of the ecosystem. Herein, to achieve an effective adsorbent system for the selective removal of E2 from the environmental water, Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles are subjected to chemical etching to reduce the overall mass and then employed as carriers to prepare a novel type of lightweight daisy-like magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (LD-MMIPs) adopting template immobilization strategy. The LD-MMIPs based etched magnetic nanoparticles not only exhibit light mass but also have plentiful imprinted sites in the etched channels, which significantly increases the adsorption capacity for E2. The daisy-like LD-MMIPs own strong magnetic responsiveness, well crystallinity , fast binding kinetics, high adsorption amount, and excellent selectivity . Moreover, combining with HPLC, the LD-MMIPs as adsorbents have been successfully used to specifically recognize and detect trace E2 in environmental water. Thus, the proposed LD-MMIPs with high adsorption capacity hold great potential in monitoring water pollution . Additionally, this work also provides an alternative strategy for improving the adsorption capacity of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers through a convenient chemical etching technology .

The redistribution process of arsenate (As(V)) and the variation in As(V) content in different locations must be clarified to ensure low mobility of As(V) during microbial ferrihydrite reduction. In this study, we investigated As(V) immobilization and redistribution processes when ferrihydrite was incubated with Geobacter sulfurreducens in the presence of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles . Our study results showed that, As(V) in the aqueous phase and ferrihydrite were redistributed on light minerals (goethite), heavy minerals (ferrihydrite and magnetite), and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) induced by G. sulfurreducens during ferrihydrite reduction. Interestingly, we found that As(V) in the form of arsenate ion (AsO 4 3- ) was adsorbed by the functional groups of the EPS, while the formed Fe II 3 (As V O 4 ) 2 was wrapped in the network structure of EPS. Moreover, the addition of TiO 2 nanoparticles did not promote but delayed the entire ferrihydrite reduction, As(V) immobilization and redistribution processes. Furthermore, changes in the aqueous arsenic and iron concentrations are closely related to the formation time of secondary minerals. Our study findings provide new insights into the As(V) immobilization process mediated by G. sulfurreducens under anaerobic conditions .

Pyrochlore-based glass-ceramics are attracting attention as a promising host material for immobilizing minor actinide in high-level wastes. However, the loading capacity of pyrochlore-based materials for actinide elements is to be improved, and only conventional synthetic approaches of powder sintering and glassy bulk crystallization were reported. Here, new (La,Y) 2 (Zr,Ti) 2 O 7 pyrochlore-based glass-ceramics were subtly designed and successfully prepared through a rapid melting and solidification process. The solidification behavior of samples with different cooling rates was investigated, the dense and crack-free (La,Y) 2 (Zr,Ti) 2 O 7 pyrochlore-based glass-ceramics were prepared at the cooling rate of 500 °C/s (within 1.5 s). The present amorphous La 2 O 3 -TiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 phase demonstrates the outstanding thermal stability compared with the currently used borosilicate glass for high-level waste immobilization due to the lack of conventional glass-forming components. The results show the great feasibility of this novel synthesis route for glass-ceramics by direct solidification and its good potential for immobilizing high-level wastes.

Ionic liquid modified silicas with high adsorption capacity for phenols prompt us to deeply explore the contribution of interactions between the adsorbent and adsorbate, with a particular focus on hydrophobicity, π–π, electrostatic and acid–base interactions. Herein, by introducing a series of typical substituent groups including N,N-dimethylaminopropyl (A), benzyl (B), dodecyl (D) and naphthylmethyl (N) in an imidazole ring (Im), three mono-immobilized and two co-immobilized imidazolium ionic liquid modified silicas, namely SilprAImCl, SilprBImCl, SilprNImCl, SilprDBImCl and SilprDAImCl, werre synthesized for removal and recovery of 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) from aqueous solutions. Adsorption kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamic analysis and desorption experiments have been carried out. The experimental results reveal that the substituent groups such as N,N-dimethylaminopropyl, benzyl and naphthylmethyl on the imidazole ring can significantly enhance the adsorption of 2,4-DNP via the acid–base interaction or π–π interaction and the adsorption capacity of 2,4-DNP follows the order: SilprNImCl > SilprAImCl > SilprBImCl. Furthermore, SilprDBImCl exhibits the largest adsorption capacity and SilprDAImCl has the lowest among the five adsorbents. These interesting finds indicate that the combination of hydrophobicity and π–π interactions lead to enhanced adsorption performance towards 2,4-DNP, while the combination of the hydrophobicity and acid–base interactions can restrain greatly adsorption of 2,4-DNP from aqueous medium. Adsorption mechanisms of 2,4-DNP on the five adsorbents have been clarified. These results will provide a deeper insight for efficient removal of phenols from water environments.

To solve the biofouling problem of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel as the artificial cornea, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) were grafted on the surface of PVA hydrogel via a new method of photoinduced electron transfer—reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization and ring-open reaction. Both attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed that GMA and HACC were successfully grafted on the surface of PVA hydrogel. A series of experiments to test the hydrophilicity of PVA hydrogel showed that it became hydrophobic due to the introduction of hydrophobic groups after grafting with GMA and HACC. In addition, cytotoxicity in vitro of PVA-g-p(GMA-HACC) hydrogel could be considered as not cytotoxicity according to ISO 10993-5: 2009. The anti-fouling property of hydrogel decreased after grafting with GMA due to the hydrophobic surface, while increased after grafting with HACC due to the steric repulsion of p(GMA-HACC) polymer brush. It’s no doubt that PET-RAFT was a feasible and reliable surface modification method which could be used in many biomolecules due to the excellent advantages.

In terms of ligand fishing, the amount and the relative activity recovery of enzymes immobilized on magnetic particles and nanoparticles are not preeminent. Therefore, the metal-organic framework (MOF) UiO-66-NH 2 was synthesized to immobilize the porcine pancreatic lipase (PPL) via precipitation-cross-linking, and the resulting novel biological matrices named PPL@MOF manifested high PPL loading capacity (98.31 mg/g) and relative activity recovery (104.4%). Moreover, the novel enzyme-MOF composite was applied to screen lipase inhibitors from Prunella vulgaris L. to enrich and improve the techniques of ligand fishing. As a result, 13 lipase ligands were obtained, and 12 compounds were determined by HPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS. All of these ligands were further confirmed to be potential inhibitors through the verification of the activity assay and molecular docking . The proposed approach based on PPL@MOF was superior in terms of abundant protein loading capacity, high enzyme catalytic activity and easy preparation process. Taken together, our newly developed method provided a new platform for efficient discovering bioactive molecules from natural herbs.

In recent years, the pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been widely employed to prepare advanced heterogeneous catalysts. However, large size or agglomeration caused by pyrolysis severely limits the performance of the catalysts due to the high mass transfer resistance. In this work, MOF crystals (Cu-BTC) in-situ grown on the biomorphic hierarchical layered double hydroxides (LDHs) surface (ZnAl-LDH/Cu-BTC) and it as a pyrolytic precursor to prepare layered double oxides/metal (ZnAl-LDO/Cu) composite catalyst were reported. ZnAl-LDH support induced the uniform distribution of nano-sized Cu-BTC on the nanosheets surface, and this unique method mediated Cu-BTC precursor for the in-situ construction of highly stable Cu nanoparticles under a high-temperature H 2 reduction. ZnAl-LDO/Cu exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability for the reduction 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in the presence of NaBH 4 , which could be recycled for fifteen successive cycles with a high reduction efficiency (over 93%). Meanwhile, the ZnAl-LDO/Cu demonstrated high catalytic efficiencies on rhodamine B, congo red, methyl orange and methylene blue dyes. Hence, the concept presented in this work can be further expanded to synthesis of other MOFs derived high-efficiency non-noble metal catalysts, which have a great potential as a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly reusable catalyst to replace noble metals catalyst in large scale catalytic application.

We propose a strategy for the surface immobilization of composite catalysts consisting of titania nanosheets (TNs) and Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) via the in situ generation of nanoparticles in a covalent LbL (Layer-by-layer) matrix followed by calcination. The thickness and compactness of the TNs and polymer film were finely adjusted to prepare AuNPs of varying sizes and densities, leading to surface immobilized composite catalysts with varying H 2 generating capacities after calcination. The optimized composite catalyst with the addition of 2.5 wt% Pt as cocatalyst presented high performance even comparable to the highest hydrogen generation efficiency by mobilizing particle catalysts containing TNs. The study demonstrates that a proper surface immobilization strategy not only facilitates catalysts application and collection, but also allows for catalytic efficiency to be enhanced by fine tuning the ratios and structures of each of the constituent components.

Herein a facile method for immobilization of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) was developed. The ZIFs grew on electrochemically deposited zinc oxide (ZnO) layer while carbon fiber bundle served as substrate. The synthesized ZIFs-ZnO composite was packed into PEEK tube as sorbent for online solid phase microextraction (SPME)-HPLC-UV analysis of Sudan dyes. Good enrichment efficiency (200–461 fold), low limits of detection (0.002 ng mL −1 ) and wide linear ranges (0.02–20 ng mL −1 , correlation coefficient > 0.9996) were achieved. The analytical method was demonstrated to be practical for analysis of Sudan dyes in environmental water samples with good recoveries (83.5%~95.0%).

In this paper, a simple and effective method using sodium metasilicate as precursor and amine as additive was first reported to immobilize recombinant nitrilase, for efficient production of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio) butanoic acid from 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio) butanenitrile. High immobilization recovery of enzyme activity (above 90 %) was achieved. The immobilized enzyme displayed better thermal stability, pH stability and shelf life compared to free nitrilase. Moreover, it showed excellent reusability and could be recycled up to 16 batches without significant loss in activity. 200 mM 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio) butanenitrile was completely converted by the immobilized enzyme within 30 min, and the accumulation amount of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio) butanoic acid reached 130 mmol/g of immobilized beads after 16 batches. These encouraging results demonstrated the efficiency of the new technology for nitrilase immobilization, which has great potential in preparation of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio) butanoic acid.

The metal–organic framework (MOF) of Cu3(btc)2 (btc = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid) is covalently immobilized at chitosan (CS)–electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO) hybrid film modified electrode, which is characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectra (EDS), and electrochemistry. The MOF-based electrode is applied as an electrochemical sensing platform for the simultaneous detection of dihydroxybenzene isomers (DBIs) of catechol (CT), resorcinol (RS), and hydroquinone (HQ). The results show that the DBIs present well-resolved and intense voltammetric signals at the modified electrode, due to the synergic effect contributing from Cu3(btc)2 with unique porous framework structure and ERGO with high electronic conductivity. The excellent distinguishing efficiency of the sensor toward DBIs is also confirmed by the quantum chemical computation. Quantitative analysis assays by differential pulse voltammetry shows that the sensor has wide linear ranges and low detection limits for the DBIs. The developed sensor is also applied for the determination of DBIs in the real water sample, and satisfactory results are obtained. This work strongly implies that the MOFs have great potential in the construction of novel electrochemical sensor for isomers.
