Bam@MIL-125/Ag evaporator: Synergistically boosting evaporation and photodegradation for Holistic water management

Xinyu Cai,Yiduo Chen,Dandan Wang,Zhongming Su,Weiting Yang

Here, a biomass-based composite interfacial evaporation system utilizing a Ti-MIL-125-NH 2 /Ag (Ti-MIL-125/Ag; MIL-125/Ag) catalyst was successfully developed, which innovatively achieved synergistic enhancement of photothermal conversion and photocatalytic degradation. Initially, the precisely engineered Ag nanoparticles-modified Ti-MIL-125-NH 2 significantly enhanced visible-light absorption capacity and charge carrier separation efficiency. Furthermore, a Bam@MIL-125/Ag three-dimensional porous interfacial evaporator was constructed using eco-friendly and low-cost bamboo substrate through the sodium alginate gelation. At a height of 1.5 cm, 5 wt% of Ag loading, and a content of 20 mg of Ti-MIL-125/Ag in the Bam@MIL-125 evaporator, the Bam@MIL-125/Ag system under 1 kW·m −2 simulated sunlight demonstrated an evaporation rate of 1.45 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and a solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency of 81.2 %. Notably, leveraging photo-generated free radicals from Ti-MIL-125/Ag, the Bam@MIL-125/Ag evaporator achieved efficient removal (98.67 %) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in water through the photocatalytic degradation process. Furthermore, when operating continuously for 56 h in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, the Bam@MIL-125/Ag evaporator maintained an evaporation rate above 1.4 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , demonstrating excellent stability, salt resistance, and heavy metal removal capabilities in practical applications. This work provides an innovative strategy for designing MOF-based evaporators that combine high-performance water production with advanced purification functionality.

Sensitive and stable Ag@MOFs imprinted composite membrane for specific detection of organic dyes

Yanbing Zheng,Dongying Liu,Honghui Gai,Fanhui Lin

A novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-imprinted membrane is engineered through a synergistic integration of SERS technology and molecular imprinting technology (MIT). Polyamide (PA-6) serves as the supporting membrane due to its mechanical properties and is further modified with UIO-66 (NH 2 )–Ag as SERS substrates. Molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) are synthesized to produce the SERS imprinted membrane (Ag/PA-6/UIO-66(NH 2 )@MIPs membranes, APU-MIMs) for selective detection of rhodamine B (RhB). It is reflected from the results that APU-MIMs exhibits excellent SERS performance with high sensitivity and specific recognition ability, reaching a detection limit of 10 −12  M. The APU-MIMs also presents the advantages of non-destructiveness, good stability and recyclability. Overall, it pioneers a novel synthetic strategy for fabricating SERS membranes with superior analytical performance, thereby expanding the practical scope of SERS-based sensing technologies.

Understanding Contributions of Silanols Over Ag/USY Catalysts in Selective Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Ma Xueqin,Shen Liuwei,Shi Gaolei,Zhang Xingguang

The selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to value-added products plays an important role in biomass catalytic transformation, which essentially depends upon design of highly efficient and selective catalysts. This study aims to identify contributions of silanols (Si-OH groups) on Ag/USY catalysts to regulating catalytic performances in selective oxidation of HMF to HMFCA (5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid), by means of aluminium tri-sec-butoxide (AlBO) modification to suppress Si-OH groups of USY and 2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine (2,6-DTBPy) selective poison to shield Brønsted acid sites in the reaction system. The catalysts are characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, XPS and FT-IR to examine the crystal structures, surface areas, porosity, morphology, Ag distribution, chemical states, and surface adsorptive properties. The HMF conversion (44-49.2%) slightly changes with increasing AlBO content, whereas the HMFCA selectivity gradually goes down from 56.2 to around 22.1% and the levulinic acid (LA) selectivity minorly raises from 5.6 to 12.8%. The production of LA originates from enhanced Brönsted acid sites after AlBO modification, and the decline of HMFCA selectivity is principally attributed to the suppression of Si-OH groups that weakens the interaction between HMF reactants and catalysts. This work provides new insights into the role of surface modification in tailoring metal and zeolite-based catalysts for organic conversions. Graphical

Fabrication of Zwitterionic Copolymer and Ag Nanoparticle Coating for Enhanced Antibiofouling and Bactericidal Properties

Chuangxin Huang,Xin Liu,Zhan Gao,Shangwan Fu,Jianli Meng,Qi Chen,Qiuliang Wang

Titanium (Ti) implants face significant challenges due to bacterial infections and thrombosis caused by surface biofouling, often leading to implantation failure. Hence, we developed an accelerated codeposition strategy to functionalize Ti surfaces with zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for enhanced antibiofouling and antibacterial properties. In this approach, AgNO3 served a dual role: (1) as an oxidant to accelerate dopamine polymerization and PSBMA codeposition, reducing reaction time from 24 to 4 h and (2) as a precursor for in situ synthesis of uniformly distributed AgNPs via phenolic hydroxyl reduction. The optimized Ti/PDA–PSB@Ag0.15 coating exhibited superior and robust antibacterial performance, achieving >99.9% inhibition against both E. coli and S. aureus, while the cytotoxicity assays confirmed high L929 fibroblast viability (>90%), ensuring biosafety. In addition, the zwitterionic polymer contained in the Ti/PDA–PSB@Ag0.15 coating provided superhydrophilicity and outstanding protein resistance, reducing 85% of both bovine fibrinogen (BFG) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption compared to unmodified Ti. Finally, the modified Ti substrates demonstrated minimal hemolysis ratio (<3%), reduced platelet adhesion, and prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), indicating excellent hemocompatibility and strong anticoagulant properties. Thus, this work presents a rapid, scalable method to engineer multifunctional Ti implants with synergistic antifouling and bactericidal capabilities, offering significant potential for clinical applications in orthopedic, dental, and cardiovascular devices.

Synthesis of flexible SERS sensing platform of graphene/Ag-popcorns/ PMMA for ultrasensitive detection

Qingyan Han,Hao Zhang,Andrey Kaplan,Shixing Fan,Yazhou Xu,Chengyun Zhang,Wei Gao,Enjie He,Jun Dong

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with ultrahigh sensitivity has garnered significant attention for quantitative analysis and chemically specific detection. However, conventional SERS platforms, typically structured by depositing plasmonic micro/nanoparticles onto rigid substrates, face limitations in further advancement and applications. In this study, we present a novel method to prepare a flexible SERS film substrate composed of graphene overlayer (G) atop a self-assembled array of silver micropopcorns (Ag MPs) and a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) membrane. We show that adding an overlayer of graphene improves substantially overall SERS performance. This flexible G/Ag MPs/PMMA film substrate achieves a detection limit as low as 100 picomolar for rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) molecules and identifies mixtures containing Rh6G (10 −11  M) and crystal violet (CV, 10 −6  M) molecules. Furthermore, the flexible SERS structure enables quantitative detection of thiram, achieving a detection limit of 0.005 ppm, well below the allowable limit in food. This study provides a robust SERS platform that advances fundamental research and facilitates the development of practical applications in quantitative analysis, detection, and biological sensing. Combining graphene and Ag MPs on a flexible PMMA substrate offers a versatile and scalable approach to enhancing SERS performance, paving the way for future innovations.

Fe@SiO2@Ag core-shell nanocomposite fibers for enhanced interfacial polarization and microwave absorption

Nanqing Zhang,Xianhua Bian,Zhenglong Zhu,Xin Huang,Ping-an Yang

To effectively absorb electromagnetic waves and reduce the impact of electromagnetic radiation on the health of residents and the normal operation of electronic devices, core-shell nanocomposite fibers (Fe NWs@SiO 2 @Ag) were successfully prepared by the liquid-phase hydrolysis method. The microwave absorption properties of core-shell nanocomposite nanofibers with different ratios were tested and analyzed using the coaxial method. The results show that the sample with a molar ratio of Fe:SiO 2 :Ag of 1:0.1:1 has the best comprehensive performance. This sample exhibits excellent microwave absorbing performance. When the mass filling fraction is 25 wt%, its minimum reflection loss (RL min ) can reach −61.55 dB, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) can reach 3.52 GHz. The excellent microwave absorbing performance can be attributed to the interfacial polarization effect of the core-shell nanocomposite structure, the magnetic loss and conduction loss of each layer of materials, and the small-scale effect caused by the one-dimensional structure. This study can provide a methodological reference for the preparation of high-performance absorbing materials.

Flexible and recyclable PI/Ag Nanofiber SERS substrates for ultrasensitive detection of pesticide residues

Ziwen Yang,Boyang Guo,Keyan Liu,Zhi Zhu,Donglai Han,Cong Wang,Jing Song

Although surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has become a powerful analytical technique for ultrasensitive molecular detection, it still faces challenges including instability, unrepeatability, and non-recyclable. The rational design and fabrication of SERS substrates that are simultaneously stable, reproducible, and recyclable remains a critical yet unmet need. Here, we present a flexible polyimide-silver (PI/Ag) nanofiber-based SERS platform, synthesized via electrospinning and in-situ reduction techniques. The spatial distribution and density of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were precisely regulated by tuning the type and concentration of reducing agents, which effectively modulated the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect to optimize SERS performance. Among the tested formulations, the PI/Ag-NB substrate—prepared using NaBH 4 as the reducing agent—exhibited the most favorable nanoparticle dispersion and the strongest SERS activity. Using 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as a probe molecule, the PI/Ag-NB substrate achieved a maximum enhancement factor (EF) of 1.17 × 10 7 . Beyond its high sensitivity, the substrate demonstrated broad spectral responsiveness, enabling the reliable detection of diverse analytes such as methylene blue (MB), methyl violet (CV), Congo red (CR) and malachite green (MG). To further validate its practical utility, long-term stability, and recyclability, the substrate was employed for the detection of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) pesticide residues both in aqueous solutions and soil extracts. Notably, the substrate stored for 30 days maintained performance over 10 consecutive detection cycles, their robustness and reproducibility. The platform achieved a measured detection limit of 10 −10  M, with a theoretical limit reaching as low as 3.12 × 10 −11  M, highlighting the ultrasensitive detection capability of the substrate. Collectively, these findings establish PI/Ag-NB nanofibers as a versatile and high-performance SERS platform, paving the way for their practical applications in environmental monitoring, food safety, and chemical sensing.

Advancing photocatalytic CH activation: VO2-Ag nanocomposites for efficient cyclohexane oxidation under mild conditions

Xiaoyan Xiang,Jincheng Liu,Bingjie Li,Wenxin Yang,Zewei Liao,Wei Cai,Yijun Luo,Yanxiong Fang

The selective oxidation of inert C H bonds via sustainable photocatalytic methods represents a critical advancement in green chemistry. This research develops VO 2 -Ag nanocomposites for the selective photocatalytic oxidation of cyclohexane to KA oil (cyclohexanol/cyclohexanone) under mild conditions, addressing the inefficiency, high energy consumption, and over-oxidation of conventional methods. Oxygen-deficient VO 2 nanorods were synthesized solvothermally, followed by in situ photoreduction to deposit uniformly dispersed silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) with the diameter of 6∼8 nm onto the VO₂ nanorod surface with the length of 500∼600 nm. The VO 2 -Ag synergy integrates three key features: (1) VO 2 oxygen vacancies modulating reactant adsorption, (2) Ag NP localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) enhancing visible-light absorption, and (3) a Schottky heterojunction promoting charge separation. The optimized VO 2 -Ag 40 composite achieved 9.17 % cyclohexane conversion and 95.04 % KA oil selectivity under visible light in 12 h, significantly outperforming pure VO 2 . Mechanistic studies identified h + , ·O 2 − , and ·OH as key active species. Enhanced activity stems from LSPR-broadened light absorption, Schottky-minimized charge recombination, and vacancy-optimized intermediate adsorption. This work highlights the potential of interfacial engineering and defect modulation in designing high-performance photocatalysts for sustainable hydrocarbon valorization, offering a scalable strategy for green chemical synthesis.

SERS substrate based on COF@Ag for detecting amoxicillin in honey and lake water

Kun Chen,Chaoqun Ma,Guoqing Chen,Taiqun Yang,Hui Gao,Lei Li,Zichen Yang,Jun Cao,Chenkai Zheng,Longyao Ma

This study presents the design of a Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate, COF@Ag, for the sensitive detection of Amoxicillin (AMX) in lake water and honey. Furthermore, the study investigates the role of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in SERS detection. The characterization results demonstrate the capability of COFs to efficiently enrich Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), resulting in a more concentrated distribution of hotspots and an enhanced electromagnetic field on the substrate. By employing density functional theory (DFT) simulation, the frontier electronic orbitals of COFs and AMX were analyzed, and the chemical bonds and weak interactions in the system were examined using the Interaction Region Indicator (IRI) method to propose potential enhancement mechanisms. In aqueous solutions, the linear range is 1 μg/L-30 μg/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) 0.279 μg/L. In lake water, the linear range span from 100 μg/L to 500 μg/L, with a detection limit of 8.244 μg/L. For honey, the linear range extend from 20 ng/g to 100 ng/g, with a detection limit of 2.917 ng/g. This method holds key significance in facilitating the rapid detection of amoxicillin and advancing the application of COFs in SERS.

Wearability Analysis of Ag Nanoparticle-Loaded Cotton Fabric Modified by SPEEK/PVA Blend Polymer

Wang Peng,Jin Zengkai,Mai Ke,Zhu Lei,Lin Junxiong

The antibacterial silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs)-loaded cotton fabric modified by SPEEK/PVA film was prepared by photo-induced method with 350 nm UV light irradiation. Its wearable properties, such as wrinkle recovery, tensile property, thermal stability and water vapour permeability were investigated. It was found that the fabric loaded with Ag NPs retained its brown colour after five cycles of washing in soap solution. TG/DTG analysis indicated that the fabric had two pyrolysis peak temperatures at about 370 °C and 500 °C, and the loading of Ag NPs improved the thermal stability of the cotton fabric. The crease recovery angles of the fabric in both warp and weft directions increased with the generation of Ag NPs. However, both the breaking force and elongation at break decreased with the generation of Ag NPs due to the use of UV irradiation, which is destrimental to the mechanical performance of textile materials. Moreover, the deposition of Ag NPs led to a minor decrease of the water-vapour transmission rate. The hand-feel evaluation showed that the softness of the fabric improved whilst the smoothness declined with the loading of Ag NPs. The water contact angle was found to be 135.2°, indicating that the Ag NPs-loaded cotton fabric had excellent hydrophobicity.

Efficient electrosynthesis of CO-rich syngas over CeO2-armored Ag nanowires towards sustainable steelmaking

Yi-Hong Yu,Xin Cui,Yi-Meng Hong,Gao-Wu Qin,Song Li

Incorporating electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECR) that produces CO-rich syngas into the workflow of steelmaking presents a promising strategy to neutralize the steelmaking industry. Herein, we develop a highly efficient and stable Ag nanowires with surface CeO 2 armors (CeO 2 /AgNWs) as ECR electrocatalyst for syngas production. The engineered CeO 2 -Ag interface facilitates CO 2 -to-CO conversion by lowering the energy barrier for *COOH intermediate formation through synergistic electronic effects. At an industrially relevant current density of −251.3 mA cm −2 , the CeO 2 /AgNWs generate CO-rich syngas by co-electrolysis of CO 2 and H 2 O, with a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92.1 % for CO. Techno-economic analysis (TEA) reveals that integrating the CeO 2 /AgNWs-driven ECR into existing steelmaking workflows can potentially reduce CO 2 emissions by 83 % and elevate the renewable energy utilization to ∼91.4 %, unlocking new possibilities for achieving carbon neutrality in the steel industry.

Au-Ag alloy nanoparticle-induced hot electron injection enhances photoelectrochemical detection of alpha-fetoprotein

Jiawei Yan,Biao Zhao,Min Li,Zuxing Zhang,Aoqun Jian,Yingxian Xue

Early and accurate detection of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is critical for the diagnosis and monitoring of hepatocellular carcinoma and other malignancies, However, conventional immunoassays often suffer from limited sensitivity, narrow dynamic range, and complex sample preparation. In this study, we developed a photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor based on Au Ag alloy nanoparticles/TiO 2 /Au (AATA) nanocomposite films, which exhibits low background noise and exceptional sensitivity for the quantitative detection of AFP. AATA nanofilms with varying component ratios were fabricated via a combination of magnetron sputtering and spin coating. The synergistic effect of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) from noble metals, plasmonic coupling between the Au film and alloy nanoparticles, and the enhanced hot electron injection efficiency of Au Ag alloy nanoparticles (Au Ag ANPs) significantly improved the PEC performance of the electrode, leading to enhanced photocurrent signals. Under optimized conditions, The PEC biosensor showed a linear response between the photocurrent change and the logarithm of C AFP in the range of 0.1 ng/mL to 1000 ng/mL, with a detection limit as low as 4.54 pg/mL. Additionally, the fabricated biosensor demonstrated excellent sensitivity, stability, and reproducibility, providing a promising analytical platform for the clinical detection of AFP in human serum.
