Synergetic Oxidation and Adsorption of Arsenite by Core-Shell β-FeOOH@MnO2 Nanocomposite for Enhanced Removal of Arsenic From Water

Shifeng Li,Yan Zhou,Shiyu Wang,Shuhua Yao,Min Xiao

Arsenic contamination in water, particularly from highly toxic arsenite (As(III)), continues to pose a significant global public health challenge due to its high mobility and resistance to conventional treatment methods. This study presents an innovative core-shell β-FeOOH@MnO 2 nanocomposite, which synergistically integrates MnO 2 nanosheets to oxidize As(III) into adsorptive arsenate (As(V)) and β-FeOOH to facilitate the efficient uptake of As(V). This approach addresses common limitations such as particle aggregation and suboptimal adsorption observed in pure MnO 2 systems. The nanocomposite, synthesized by hydrothermal methods, exhibits a doubled surface area of 172.95 m 2 /g, offering numerous active sites and mesopores conducive to rapid mass transfer. Under optimized conditions (pH 3.0, 0.4-g/L dosage), the nanocomposite achieved 98.39% removal of As(III) and a maximum adsorption capacity of 50.26 mg/g at 25°C, following pseudo-second-order kinetics and endothermic chemisorption. Characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), confirmed the synergistic mechanism, wherein MnO 2 oxidizes As(III) through the reduction of Mn 4+ to Mn 3+ , and the resulting As(V) is adsorbed by β-FeOOH. This advancement offers a cost-effective and efficient solution for improved arsenic remediation in water treatment applications. Graphical A core-shell β-FeOOH@MnO 2 nanocomposite effectively removes toxic arsenite by oxidizing mobile As(III) to adsorptive As(V) and adsorbing it, achieving high removal efficiency.

NiO Effectively Regulates the Generation of Oxygen Vacancies in MnO2 Promoting the Selective Oxidation of High-Concentration HMF to DFF

Yintao Song,Hang Zheng,Mengyuan Huang,Quanwei Deng,Luhui Lin,Yaqi Shi,Jiacheng Li,Chenting Yang,Lu Lin,Changlong Wang,Xing Tang

We have developed a highly efficient and stable non-noble metal-based heterogeneous catalyst for the selective oxidation of HMF to DFF. Mixed oxide catalysts with different Mn/Ni molar ratios were synthesized using the urea precipitation method. The Mn 6.6 NiO X catalyst exhibited a 95.33% HMF conversion rate and a 99.39% DFF selectivity under the conditions of 110°C, 2 h, 1 MPa O 2 , and N,N -dimethylformamide. Experimental results indicate that the introduction of NiO can effectively regulate the crystal structure of MnO 2 , forming an amorphous Mn─O─Ni interface, which significantly increases the specific surface area (SSA) of the catalyst while reducing the binding energy of surface lattice oxygen (O L ), promoting the generation of oxygen vacancies (O V ), and thereby enhancing the adsorption and activation capabilities of O 2 . Combined adsorption experiments and kinetic analysis revealed that Ni species preferentially anchor the hydroxymethyl group in HMF molecules, enhancing reaction selectivity. Further experiments demonstrated that the Mn 6.6 NiO x catalyst, under certain conditions, could achieve an HMF conversion rate of 87.52% and a DFF selectivity of 85.81% even at a high substrate concentration of 10 wt% HMF.

Smartphone-assisted visual detection of carbaryl in fruit peels based on MnO2@g-C3N4 nanozyme with enhanced oxidase-like activity

Wenjing Liu,Linchun Nie,Dejing Meng,Rui Yang,Haobo Yang,Shuwen Cao,Jianzhi Wang,Qingxiang Zhou

Dispersed loading of MnO 2 on g-C 3 N 4 resulted in enhanced oxidase-like activity. • MnO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 nanozyme exhibited excellent selectivity to carbaryl • Target nanozyme showed good anti-interference ability • Smartphone-assisted visual detection achieved good sensitivity and reliability. In present work, MnO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 nanozyme was synthesized via a calcination-hydrothermal two-step method to achieve enhanced oxidase-like activity based on the conception of electron transfer regulation and effectively loading for avoiding agglomeration to expose more active sites. Herein, g-C 3 N 4 served as a dispersing substrate for MnO 2 with oxidase-like activity and regulating the interfacial electron transfer, and their synergistical catalytic effect accelerated the conversion of dissolved oxygen to superoxide anion radicals (•O 2 − ), which oxidized 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue products. Carbaryl can be adsorbed on g-C 3 N 4 surface through π-π stacking interactions, while its carbamate group can be bound to the active centers of MnO 2 . By Lineweaver-Burk plot method, the steady-state kinetic analysis showed that carbaryl had a mixed inhibitory effect on electron transfer and the production of superoxide anion radical (•O 2 − ). Based on this principle, a smartphone-based colorimetric sensor was constructed for carbaryl detection, which exhibited a linear response in the range of 6.3–210.2 μM, with a detection limit of 3.79 μM and a quantitation limit of 12.64 μM. The method achieved satisfactory recoveries (94.3–107.5%) for spiked fruit peel samples and owned great application prospect.

In-situ phase reconstruction of MnOOH/δ-MnO2 steering interfacial electronic regulation to boost electron transfer process for water purification

Cheng Han,Zhe Zhang,Yin Wei,Lanlan Liang,Xinao Zhao,Danna Yang,Zhongze Cui,Chuanliang Zhao,Liwei Yang

PVP-assisted synthesis enabled in-situ δ-MnO 2 -to-MnOOH reconstruction. • MnOOH/δ-MnO 2 interfaces enhanced PMS adsorption and electron transfer. • Surface-bound PMS* species enabled selective ETP-dominated TC oxidation. • The system maintained high TC removal in real lake water and groundwater. • The catalytic membrane achieved stable TC removal at low PMS dosage. Developing non-radical peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation pathways that resist interference from complex water matrices remains challenging for the treatment of emerging contaminants in practical applications. A polyvinyl pyrrolidone-assisted hydrothermal strategy was therefore developed to induce the partial in - situ reconstruction of δ-MnO 2 into MnOOH. The resulting MnOOH/δ-MnO 2 interface directed PMS activation toward an electron transfer process (ETP) for tetracycline (TC) removal. The catalyst achieved nearly complete TC removal within 30 min and maintained high activity under complex water matrix conditions. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) analysis revealed that the MnOOH/δ-MnO 2 composite interface strengthened PMS adsorption and promoted interfacial charge redistribution. These effects facilitated electron transfer during TC oxidation. Surface-bound PMS* species on the MnOOH/δ-MnO 2 interface acted as electron-accepting centers, steering TC oxidation toward an ETP-dominated non-radical pathway. The MnOOH/δ-MnO 2 catalytic membrane maintained above 98% TC removal in real water matrices under continuous-flow conditions at only 0.2 mM PMS. These results demonstrate the promising practical applicability of the system. Life cycle assessment further indicated a comparatively low environmental burden for the MnOOH/δ-MnO 2 /PMS system. These findings provide a mechanistic basis for designing manganese oxide/oxyhydroxide catalysts through polymer-induced interfacial reconstruction and offer a practical strategy for ETP-dominated PMS activation in complex water treatment Download: Download high-res image (222KB) Download: Download full-size image

Combined Effects of Alkaline Hydrogen Peroxide and MnO2 on Anaerobic Digestion of Corn Stover: Methanogenic Performance and Microbial Community Response

Jiawei Li,Bo Peng,Meiling Zhang,Xianghui Meng,Shuang Ai,Kui Cheng

Corn stover (CS), as a major agricultural residue in Northeast China, suffers from inefficient anaerobic digestion (AD) due to its rigid lignocellulosic structure and the generation of inhibitory phenolic compounds during pretreatment. Alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) disrupts lignocellulosic structures while generating methanogenesis-inhibiting phenolic compounds. Current pretreatments only resolve either lignocellulosic rigidity or phenolic toxicity, with no integrated method to mitigate both simultaneously. This work investigated a combined strategy of AHP pretreatment coupled with MnO2amendment to improve methane production from CS using laboratory-scale batch AD. Results demonstrated that 3% AHP pretreatment induced structural modifications and altered lignin-related functional groups, while the subsequent addition of 1.0 g MnO2significantly (p< 0.05) removed up to 28.4% of the generated total phenolic equivalents and alleviated volatile fatty acid (VFA) accumulation. The Mn-AHP group achieved the highest cumulative methane production of 449.28 ± 13.25 mL/g VS, representing a 14.6% increase compared to the control and a 3.24% improvement over the AHP-only group. Microbial analysis revealed increased relative abundance of acidogenic bacteria (e.g.,Synergistota) and a compositional shift in the archaeal community toward a structure dominated byMethanobacteriumandMethanothrix. These findings indicate that coupling AHP with MnO2is a promising approach to address the dual challenges of lignocellulosic recalcitrance and phenolic inhibition, providing a feasible pathway for agricultural waste valorization.

Construction of electron-rich Co centers and abundant redox pairs in MnO2/CoMn2O4 heterointerfaces for PMS activation and water purification

Shuo Wang,Xingrong Li,Hongyao Zhao,Zichen Ma,Danhong Shang,Linzhi Zhai,Xiang Liu,Feng Zeng,Jianming Pan,Yanyun Wang,Fu Yang

Multiphase catalysts with heterointerfaces have shown compelling potential in catalyzing oxidative mineralization of pollutants. In particular, the interfacial electron communication of heterointerfaces is beneficial for activation of reactant molecules through promotive interfacial electron transfer efficiency. In this study, a MnO 2 /CoMn 2 O 4 heterojunction catalyst was constructed for the electron-rich Co centers and abundant redox pairs. Benefiting from the synergistic interaction between cobalt (Co 2+ /Co 3+ ) and manganese (Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ ) at the active sites, as well as the electron density difference between the interfaces of the two phases, a significant enhancement of the catalytic activity for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was achieved. Systematic characterization analysis revealed that the catalyst has highly active catalytic sites characterized by electron-rich Co 2+ , and the electron-donating property of the high-electron-density Co 2+ active sites in the A site of spinel CoMn 2 O 4 promotes the efficient transfer of electrons and the rapid generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from PMS activation. More exposed catalytic active sites and significantly lower interfacial mass transfer resistance further enhanced the activation performance of the catalysts for bisphenol A degradation by these ROS. The optimal MnO 2 /CoMn 2 O 4 –5 exhibited a optimal BPA degradation activity (86 %, k obs = 0.316 min -1 ) and excellent resistance to anionic interference. The results of free radical quenching experiments indicated that single linear oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and hydroxyl radical (·OH) were the main active substances for PMS activation and BPA degradation. This study provides meaningful insights into the improvement of heterojunction interfacial systems for catalytic efficiency enhancement and environmental remediation.

Nanoarchitectonics on Oxygen-Rich Vacancy C/OVs-Ni-Cu-LDHs@MnO2 Tubular Micromotors for Sensitive Detection and Efficient Catalytic Degradation

Xiaoqing Li,Min Zuo,Ziwei Lan,Fengling Jiang,Dickon H. L. Ng,Jia Li

C/OVs-Ni-Cu-LDHs@MnO2 tubular micromotors with enzyme-like activity and abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) were synthesized hydrothermally using kapok as a biotemplate. MnO2 acted as the micromotor’s “driving engine”, catalyzing the generation of H2O2 bubbles to provide driving force for the motor, enabling efficient motion (144.45 ± 3.97 μm/s in 5% H2O2). The micromotors also exhibited enzyme-like activity, oxidizing 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) via reactive radicals. A sensor for the colorimetric detection of GLY (lowest detection limit 0.63 μM) was developed by utilizing the enzyme inhibition induced by Cu2+-glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine, GLY) chelation. Meanwhile, the micromotor catalyzes H2O2 and activates peroxymonosulfate (PMS), efficiently generating hydroxyl radicals (•OH), superoxide radicals (O2•–), and single-linear oxygen (1O2). Under the synergistic effect of self-driven propulsion and efficient catalysis, achieving 93.71% GLY degradation in 40 min. This study provides an intelligent strategy for developing dynamic sensors with dual functions of simultaneous detection and degradation of GLY.

A label-free fluorescence turn-on assay for glutathione detection by using MnO2 nanosheets assisted aggregation-induced emission-silica nanospheres

Xiaobin Zhang,Rongmei Kong,Qingqing Tan,Fei Qu,Fengli Qu

Glutathione (GSH) serves several vital biological functions and its abnormal levels are associated with many diseases. Simple and sensitive methods capable of detecting GSH are desired for better understanding the mechanism of diseases. In this work, a label-free MnO 2 nanosheets assisted aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-silica nanospheres (SiO 2 NPs) nanoprobe for fluorescent “turn-on” detection of GSH with high sensitivity was reported for the first time. The anionic tetraphenylethylene derivative 3 (TPE3) was synthesized and employed as the AIE-active probe, which can be aggregated on the uncoated amino-functionalized SiO 2 NPs to form AIE-SiO 2 NPs and emitted strong fluorescence. Negatively charged MnO 2 nanosheets were employed as both positive charge protectors for amino-functionalized SiO 2 NPs and recognition units for GSH. The presence of GSH could selectively reduce MnO 2 nanosheets to Mn 2+ , thus releasing the amino-functionalized SiO 2 NPs and exposure its positive charges. Accordingly, the TPE3 could be aggregated on the exposured amino-functionalized SiO 2 NPs to form AIE-SiO 2 NPs and emitted strong fluorescence. The proposed assay is simple, fast, low cost, and highly sensitive with a detection limit of 200   nM for GSH. The assay was further applied in human serum samples for the detection of GSH with satisfactory results, demonstrating its promising application in practical biological samples.

MnO2-VO nanorods hybridized with multi-walled carbon nanotubes as an efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for rechargeable Zn-air batteries

Minghua He,Tingting Zhou,Wenbing Meng,Linrui Zhang

The design and development of cost-effective and highly efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts hold great significance in the study of metal-air batteries. Herein, the present study describes a facile and scalable strategy for the synthesis of a complex comprising nanorod-like MnO 2 -V O integrated with MWCNTs. For electrochemical performance, MnO 2 -V O /MWCNTs exhibit excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activities, demonstrating a half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) of 0.79 V for ORR and a potential of 1.62 V at 10 mA cm −2 for OER, with a low bifunctional potential difference ( ΔE OER-ORR , between the ORR half-wave potential and the OER potential at 10 mA cm −2 ) of 0.83 V, which are comparable to those of Pt/C and RuO 2 . This excellent catalytic performance can be attributed to the rational design of the MnO 2 -V O components and the unique interwoven network of the MnO 2 -V O /MWCNTs complexes. In addition, the electrocatalytic action and stability improvement mechanisms were also systematically analyzed based on microstructural characterization and electrochemical response. Finally, a zinc-air battery (ZAB) was fabricated by employing the as-synthesized MnO 2 -V O /MWCNTs as the cathode catalyst. The MnO 2 -V O /MWCNTs-based ZAB demonstrates an open-circuit voltage of 1.48 V, a power density of 71.17 mW cm −2 , and superior charge-discharge cycling stability with a voltage gap of only 0.77 V after 100 cycles, which are comparable to those of the commercial Pt/C + RuO 2 -based ZAB (1.39 V, 74.84 mW cm −2 , and 0.87 V gap). This study provides a simple, inexpensive and accessible synthetic method for the design of high-performance non-precious metal-based ORR/OER bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Covalent organic polymer cascade MnO2 nanosheets-based fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode sensing system for highly sensitive detection of organophosphorus pesticides

Suyu Li,Yuzhen Wang,Huilin Liu,Baoguo Sun

To enable accurate visual identification of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) in raw materials of medicinal and food homology (MFH), this study used the red-fluorescent covalent organic polymer TEPBY-DTDA to cascade MnO 2 nanosheets exhibiting oxidase-mimetic activity and suppressing fluorescence effects , enabling colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescence detection. OPs suppressed acetylcholinesterase (AChE) efficiency, consequently diminishing thiocholine (TCh) production and modulating residual MnO 2 nanosheet levels. Rising OP concentrations caused the probe's fluorescence to shift red-to-yellow, accompanied by solution yellowing. Using triazophos, methyl parathion (MP), chlorpyrifos, and phoxim as representative OPs, the probes generated a robust, linear signal over the concentration interval of 0.1–1500 μg/L. The fluorescence minimal limit of detection (LOD) was 0.058 μg/L, while the minimum LOD in colorimetric mode was 0.04 μg/L. The probe demonstrated excellent selectivity and strong anti-interference capability against OPs. Consequently, this sensing strategy not only expands the toolbox for quality monitoring of MFH materials but also holds significant potential for enhancing food safety protocols.

Highly improved sensing of dopamine by using glassy carbon electrode modified with MnO2, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes and gold nanoparticles

Rao Dejiang,Zhang Xinjin,Sheng Qinglin,Zheng Jianbin

A composite material obtained by ultrasonication of graphene oxide (GO) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was loaded with manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ), poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and the resulting multilayer hybrid films were deposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The microstructure, composition and electrochemical behavior of the composite and the modified GCE were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectra, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The electrode induces efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of dopamine at a rather low working voltage of 0.22 V (vs. SCE) at neutral pH values. The response is linear in the 0.5 μM to 2.5 mM concentration range, the sensitivity is 233.4 μA·mM‾ 1 ·cm‾ 2 , and the detection limit is 0.17 μM at an SNR of 3. The sensor is well reproducible and stable. It displays high selectivity over ascorbic acid, uric acid and glucose even if these are present in comparable concentrations. Gold nanoparticles were self-assembled onto the surface of the MnO 2 decorated graphene oxide-carbon nanotubes composites with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) as a coupling agent. Further, a sensitive electrochemical sensor of dopamine was developed via immobilizing this nanocomposite on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE).
