Reasonable construction of low migration energy barrier and continuous proton transfer channel is the key to improving the performance of composite proton exchange membranes. In this paper, we prepared a novel bimetallic MOFs (MIL-(Cr Al)–NH 2 ) nanofibers (MCANs) consisting of Cr and Al elements by electro-blown spinning method (EBS) and hydrothermal synthesis, and subsequently introduced them into non-fluorinated sulfonic acid polymer sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) matrix to obtain composite proton exchange membranes (MCANs@SPSF). Importantly, MCANs successfully constructed relatively long-range continuous unsaturated metal site proton transfer channels provided by the Cr-based MOFs, thereby reducing the proton migration energy barrier in the MCANs@SPSF, which confirmed by the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. In detail, DFT studies indicated that the migration energy barrier between H + and MCANs was 1.677 eV, while that of single Al-based MOF (MAN) and single Cr-based MOF (MCN) were 1.879 eV and 1.762 eV respectively. The existence of efficient low migration energy barrier and continuous proton transfer channels made the proton conduction efficiency of MCANs@SPSF greatly improved, that was under the condition of 80 °C and 100 % RH, the proton conductivity of MCANs@SPSF reached the maximum value of 0.358 S cm −1 and the power density reached 104 mW cm −2 . Moreover, MCANs@SPSF-5 displayed best DMFC durability performance with only 14.65 % voltage loss under 24h test. In addition, due to the acid-base pair interaction between MCANs and SPSF enhanced the interface binding force between the two phases, meanwhile, the pore structure of MOFs also had a certain adsorption effect on methanol, thus reducing the methanol permeability, and the addition of 5 wt% MCANs in SPSF was tested to reduce the methanol permeability to 5.53 × 10 -7 cm 2 s −1 . Overall, this work provided a new strategy for construction of low migration energy barrier and continuous proton transfer channels, which was beneficial for the development of high performance proton exchange membranes.

Rational design and accessible fabrication of bifunctional electrocatalysts with high electrocatalytic activity, low price and good durability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are urgently required for metal-air batteries, but it remains as a difficult and hot subject. Herein, we report a novel cobalt-ion-exchange and pyrolysis strategy with the well-designed bio-MOF-1 as the self-template to prepare ultra-small cobalt nanoparticles embedded into N-doped hierarchical porous carbon (Co@N-HPC-800) with excellent electrical conductivity, high surface area and abundant Co-N 4 active sites. The electrochemical test results verify the outstanding bifunctional electrocatalytic activity and stability of Co@N-HPC-800 in alkaline condition, even outperforming the commercial Pt/C + RuO 2 electrocatalysts. The in situ Raman technique demonstrates the ORR and OER catalytic process occur through the redox of Co(II) and Co(III) species. The rechargeable Zn-air battery (ZAB) assembled with Co@N-HPC-800 cathode deliveries an open circuit voltage of 1.42 V, a specific capacity of 129 mAh cm −2 , a peak power density of 89.1 mW cm −2 , and stable cyclability over 85 h at 5 mA cm −2 by refreshing the electrolyte. The Co@N-HPC-800 cathode in a flexible quasi-solid-state ZAB exhibits good flexibility and stability under different bending states. This work paves a simple and valuable way for designing non-noble high-efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts in Zn-air batteries and related energy storage and conversion technologies.

Hierarchical porous structures are highly desired for various applications. However, it is still challenging to obtain such materials with tunable architectures. Here, this paper reports hierarchical nanomaterials with oriented 2D pores by taking advantages of thermally instable bonds in vanadium-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). High-temperature calcination of these MOFs accompanied by the loss of coordinated water molecules and other components enables the formation of orderly slit-like 2D pores in vanadium oxide/porous carbon nanorods (VO x /PCs). This unique combination leads to an increase of the reactive surface area. In addition, optimized VO x /PCs demonstrate high-rate capability and ultralong cycling life for sodium storage. The assembled full cells also show high capacity and cycling stability. This report provides an effective strategy for producing MOFs-derived composites with hierarchical porous architectures for energy storage.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) seawater splitting offers a sustainable route for hydrogen production; however, it is challenged by the corrosion and sluggish kinetics of photoanodes in chloride-rich electrolytes. To overcome this, we developed a bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOFs) structure with oxygen vacancies (O V ) on TiO 2 nanorods, denoted as (DA)Ni/Mo–MOFs@TiO 2 . This photoanode achieved a high photocurrent density of 2.21 mA·cm −2 and H 2 production rate of 36.07 μmol·cm −2 ·h −1 in real seawater. Notably, it undergoes in situ reconstruction during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), forming catalytically active Ov–NiOOH accompanied by a protective MoO 4 2− layer. In situ Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) directly revealed the reconstruction process and interfacial adsorption. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrated that the reconstructed surface selectively stabilized *OH intermediates (E ad = −4.26 eV), thereby enhancing the OER selectivity and corrosion resistance. This system demonstrated exceptional stability, exhibiting minimal faradaic efficiency loss (1.2–2.3%) in high chloride ion environments (0.7–1 mol/L NaCl). This study provides a novel strategy for designing durable photoelectrodes via pre-catalyst reconstruction.

A novel ternary hybrid nanoflake (GPZ) based on graphene oxide (GO), phenylphosphinic acid (PPA) and nano metal-organic framework (nano ZIF-8) particles has been designed and synthesized via a simple two-step strategy. GPZ shows high thermal stability and good compatibility with PLA matrix. When GPZ nanoflakes are added into PLA, the tensile strength and toughness of the PLA-4 with 2.0 wt% of GPZ reach 44.1 MPa and 86.0 MPa compared with 30.0 MPa and 12.8 MPa of pure PLA owing to the good dispersion of GPZ in PLA matrix and their reinforcing effects. The incorporation of GPZ also dramatically enhances the flame retardancy of PLA and the PHRR of PLA-4 with 2.0 wt% of GPZ achieves about 316.2 W/g, which is decreased by 39.5% relative to 523.0 W/g of pure PLA, respectively. The LOI of PLA-4 is 27.0%, increasing about 31.7% compared to 20.5% of pure PLA. Meanwhile, the HRR and THR in the cone calorimeter test curves for the PLA nanocomposites have also been evidently reduced. The TG-IR is applied to characterize the pyrolysis gaseous products and volatile components are suppressed with addition of GPZ. The SEM, Raman and XPS results of char residues show that a protective graphitized char layer plays a major role in improving the flame retardancy, which mainly because of the catalytic and cross-linking effects of GO, nano ZIF-8 and PPA during combustion of PLA nanocomposites.

Antibiotic pollution from compounds such as tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) is a growing concern due to its persistence in the environment and potential to promote antimicrobial resistance. Conventional treatment methods for such wastewater often suffer from low efficiency and high operational costs. In this study, a bimetallic FeMn-BTC material with a two-dimensional sheet-like morphology was synthesized via a facile one-pot ultrasonic method for the efficient degradation of TC-HCl. By precisely selecting the Fe/Mn molar ratio to 7:3, a high density of accessible Fe(II) active sites was achieved. Under visible-light irradiation, FeMn-BTC degraded 92% of high-concentration TC-HCl (100 mg/L) with a reaction rate constant of 0.06703 min −1 , which is 10.5 times higher than that of the monometallic Fe-BTC. This remarkable enhancement is attributed to the incorporation of manganese, which facilitates the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle and extends the visible-light absorption range. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further verify that manganese doping lowers both the adsorption and O-O bond cleavage energy barriers of H 2 O 2 . Mechanistic studies identify hydroxyl radicals (·OH) as the primary reactive species, with the synergistic interaction between iron and manganese promoting H 2 O 2 activation and charge-carrier separation. The catalyst also exhibits excellent stability over a wide pH range (3–9) and shows universal degradation activity toward various pollutants (methylene blue, rhodamine B, and malachite green) as well as in real water matrices containing common anions such as Cl − and SO 4 2− . After four consecutive recycling runs, the material retains over 75% of its initial degradation efficiency, outperforming most reported metal–organic framework-based catalysts. This work offers theoretical insights and a practical strategy for designing highly efficient photocatalysts for Fenton-like reactions.

Developing highly efficient MOFs derived alloy catalysts for the one-pot tandem catalytic reactions remains a challenge. In this work, a novel solid-solution confined NiCo alloy catalyst incorporating carbon (termed as NiCo/MgO-C) with banana-like morphology has been synthesized via a self-templating strategy for directing pyrolysis of well-defined Ni-Co-Mg tri-metallic MOFs (termed as Ni-Co-Mg@H 2 dhbdc, H 2 dhbdc represents 2,5-dihydroxytelephthalic acid organic linker). The developed NiCo/MgO-C catalyst was applied for the hydrogenation-alkylation tandem catalytic reaction. Owing to the unique structural (e.g., highly dispersed, small size of NiCo nanoparticles, enhanced transfer of electron density) as well as NiCo alloy advantages, the developed NiCo/MgO-C catalyst derived from Ni-Co-Mg@H 2 dhbdc MOFs delivers excellent superior catalytic performance for the hydrogenation-alkylation tandem reaction to those of bimetallic MOFs (Ni-Mg@H 2 dhbdc and Co-Mg@H 2 dhbdc, respectively) derived catalysts (Ni/MgO-C and Co/MgO-C, respectively). Notably, the tri-metallic Ni-Co-Mg@H 2 dhbdc served as the precursor for synthesis of developed catalyst could enhance the reduction degree of NiO/CoO species confined in NiO CoO-MgO solid-solution during the pyrolysis process to some extent. Therefore, we anticipated that this tri-metallic MOFs-templated strategy may provide a facile and controllable way for synthesis of solid-solution supported nanoalloy catalysts for the other heterogeneous catalytic reactions.

Due to the strong polarity and difficult in biodegradation, acesulfame (ACE) and saccharin (SAC) are difficult to treat effectively in water environment. Herein, a series of ACE and SAC adsorption were investigated by the zinc-based MOFs (ZIF-8, MAF-6, MOF-5 and Zn-MOF-74) derived porous carbons (MPCs). The porous carbon derived from MOF-5 (MPCs-M5) and Zn-MOF-74 (MPCs-M74) of zinc-based carboxylate MOFs exhibited large surface area (2774.7 m 2 /g and 2447.3 m 2 /g), high mesoporosity (94.57% and 95.66%) and equipotential point value (7.85 and 9.82). The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich adsorption model were fitted well to explore adsorption on the MPCs-M5 and MPCs-M74, respectively. Moreover, the MPCs-M5 and MPCs-M74 showed notable adsorption capacity of ACE (96.4 mg/g and 88.6 mg/g) and SAC (117.3 mg/g and 113.4 mg/g), respectively, which were the highest value than the previous reports. Furthermore, the excellent adsorption performance of MPCs-M5 and MPCs-M74 were also contributed by multi-faceted synergy of electrostatic, H-bond, and π-π interactions. Therefore, the above two samples of the hierarchical porous carbon prepared by self-activating zinc-based carboxylate MOFs with high oxygen content are recommended as efficient adsorbents for artificial sweeteners adsorption from water environment.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have the potential to boost the undervalued biomedical applications of metal ions. Such endeavor has been hindered by the challenge of how to avoid the (cyto)toxicity of the prematurely released metal ions to healthy cells or organisms and amorphous precipitates of ions formed with components in biological fluids before achieving targeting applications. The current work aimed to partially address such challenges by developing a prototypical metal ion reservoir. We prepared well-defined core–shell ZIF-8@PDA nanoparticles, with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as the reservoir of Zn2+ and polydopamine (PDA) with inherent metal ion chelating capabilities as the shell. The well-known self-etching problem of MOF templates upon polydopamine coating was mitigated by controlling the surface properties of cubic ZIF-8 nanoparticles. As regulated by the PDA shell that can partially trap the prematurely released metal ions, ZIF-8@PDA nanoparticles had a unique Zn2+ releasing behavior consisting of a limited releasing stage followed by pH-dependent burst releasing that could quickly increase the local Zn2+ concentration to harmful levels. Enhanced antibacterial efficiency of ZIF-8@PDA against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus was demonstrated. This could be attributed to the strong interaction of ZIF-8@PDA with bacteria as driven by inherent bioadhesion of PDA, which could promote direct interactions of released zinc ions with bacteria by avoiding potential precipitations.

In this work, a boric acid covalently functionalized lanthanide MOF (Ln-MOF) sensor was constructed for the first time to monitor of urinary N-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) to early diagnose of lung cancer, NANA can be used as biomarker of lung cancer. Considering that the specific binding affinity between boronic acid group and cis-diol can probably cause special influence towards the fluorescence of Ln-MOF, a boric-acid-functionalized Ln-MOF (B-EuMOF) sensor was first designed by covalent modification, which is proved to be an effective ratiometric fluorescent sensor of NANA, a urinary biomarker of lung cancer containing cis-diol. This designed NANA sensor shows special enrichment capacity, high selectivity and sensitivity, fast response, excellent reusability and more important, the ratiometric sensing result can be clearly distinguished by naked eye. Based on the luminescent sensing property of B-EuMOF towards NANA and the capture function of boric acid group, a molecular robot system which can monitor lung cancer at early stage is constructed. In this molecular robot system, boronic acid group serves as the actuator using ‘functional-hand’ to grasp NANA for the molecular robots. The fluorescence of B-EuMOF (I 470 nm /I 614 nm ) act as the sensor of the molecular robots. And the processor is constructed by combinational logic gates (INHIBIT and AND) which can control the molecular robots by logical operation of fluorescence response of B-EuMOF towards NANA. This work proposes first example of Ln-MOFs based molecular robot and what’s more, paves new way for the combination of fluorescent sensor and intelligent molecular devices.

Organophosphate nerve agents (OPs) are widely used as pesticides and chemical agents and pose a threat to human health and life. At present, most personal protective equipment usually only serves as physical protection and does not have an effect of chemical detoxification. In this work, ultra lightweight graphene oxide aerogels (GAs) have been used as a multifunctional skeleton to integrate the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) together for obtaining a high-performance hybrid material (MOFs/MIPs@GAs) on hydrolysis detoxification of OPs. As a porous three-dimensional material full of carboxyl groups, GAs can not only support excellent mass transfer performance but also provide a proper pH self-buffering catalytic reaction external environment for hydrolyzing OPs. The obtained MOFs/MIPs@GAs can catalyze dimethyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP) hydrolysis detoxification rapidly in pure water (kobs = 0.2227 min–1, t1/2 = 3.11 min). This ternary hybrid material with exceptional performance and practical applicability has vast application prospects for the development of protective equipment.

The traditional method of preparing graphene flame retardants is expensive, causes serious pollution to the environment, and poses a threat to health. This article adopts a low-cost, environmentally friendly, and sustainable mechanical ball milling method to exfoliate expandable graphite and uses an organic phosphonic acid ligand as a stripping agent aid to obtain a hybrid of multilayer graphene and phosphate-containing organic acid ligand. Using first principles based density functional theory (DFT) to calculate the binding energy between graphene layers, it was confirmed that ligands as stripping agents can significantly improve the stripping efficiency of graphene. A Ni-MOF coated graphene hybrid (G@Ni-MOF) was prepared by hydrothermal method using the phosphate-containing ligands which dispersed on the graphene surface. As expected, G@Ni-MOF has efficient flame retardant and smoke suppression properties. Compared with pure epoxy resin (EP), the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) of EP/G@Ni-MOF 5 were reduced by 43% and 23%, respectively. CO production (PCO) decreased by 49%, and CO 2 production (PCO 2 ) decreased by 47%. This study supplies a simple method for the design of large-scale preparation of graphene nano flame retardants, which is of great significance for the application of EP materials.
