Environmentally friendly and efficient solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) has been increasingly applied to seawater desalination, and the easy-to-operate electrospinning technology has attracted more and more attention. However, photothermal materials such as MXene are often combined with polymers suitable for spinning through ordinary blending. The inherent difficult dispersion of it may lead to the instability of spinning and decrease the performance of evaporators, further hindering their production and application. To address these challenges, this work designs a covalent bonding PVDF@MXene composite as the spinning raw material. Using the electrospinning technology, the high-efficiency membrane-based evaporator with well-dispersed internal materials and strong homogeneity is successfully fabricated. The membrane performance is optimal when the MXene content is 25 %, achieving an evaporation rate of 1.88 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and an efficiency of 94.06 % under one sun. Besides, it exhibits remarkable salt resistance, maintaining an evaporation rate of 1.81 kg·m −2 ·h −1 even at the salinity of up to 20 wt%. More importantly, the membrane can be immersed in oxidative reagents for 24 h without degradation or reduced performance, demonstrating its good environmental stability. Overall, this research not only provides a rational idea for addressing the dispersion issue of MXene, but also presents a potential solution to deal with the global freshwater shortage emergency.

Pervaporation emerges as a promising technique for brine treatment. In this investigation, we employed a PVDF substrate layer and applied various coating solutions using a simple spray technique to produce a composite pervaporation membrane. The composite membrane's chemical structure, morphology, hydrophilicity, swelling property, surface roughness, and crosslinking conditions were thoroughly investigated. Notably, the PVDF/PEI/P(SS-MA) composite membrane exhibited outstanding desalination performance, demonstrating high salt rejection and flux of 308.7 ± 13.8 kg m −2 h −1 when subjected to a 3.5 wt% sodium chloride solution. Even at an elevated brine concentration of 20 wt%, the membrane maintained a commendable flux of 88.76 ± 5.4 kg m −2 h −1 at 72 °C. These findings underscore the efficacy of the developed composite membrane for brine desalination applications.

A novel core–shell nanocomposite fiber membrane was fabricated in this work by coaxial electrospinning using poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) as shell material and polyetherimide (PEI) as core material. The PEI core has good heat resistance and mechanical strength, serving as a stable skeleton support. At the same time, the gel shell is conducive to enhancing the electrolyte affinity, thereby promoting the rapid transmission of Li + . As a result, the Li/LiCoO 2 batteries with the fabricated separator present an excellent first discharge capacity of 178.8 mAh g −1 at 0.2C and capacity retention rate of 89.7 % after 200 cycles. Even running at high temperature (65 °C), the PEI@PVDF-HFP separator still enables a steady charging/discharging performance. Therefore, the PEI@PVDF-HFP nanocomposite separator can be an extraordinary candidate for high-safety lithium-ion batteries.

Currently, surfactant-containing oil–water emulsions are the more difficult part of oily wastewater to treat because of their small droplet size and stable oil–water interface. Membrane separation technology is commonly used for emulsion separation due to its surface wettability and adjustable pore size. Here, tannic acid (TA) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane prepolymerization solutions are used as the exchange solvents, allowing growth on the surface and inside of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF). Among them, the content of lithium chloride (LCM) hydrate modulates the range and amount of growth. In the pressure range of 0.1–0.7 bar, the modified hydrophilic PVDF-TA/LCM-2 membranes exhibit high pure water permeation fluxes and emulsion separation efficiencies that can be adapted to different separation conditions. At 0.2 bar, the PVDF-TA/LCM-2 achieves pure water permeate flux and emulsion separation fluxes of 1860 and 648 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 , and an emulsion separation efficiency of 99.5 %. In addition, for different kinds of oil-in-water emulsions, the high separation fluxes and high separation efficiencies indicate that PVDF-TA/LCM-2has good emulsion separation performance.

With the rapid development of electronic industry, it's pressing to develop multifunctional electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials to ensure the stable operation of electronic devices. Herein, multilayered flexible PEG@PAN/MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x )/PVDF@SiO 2 (PMF) composite film has been constructed from the level of microstructure design via coaxial electrospinning, coating spraying, and uniaxial electrospinning strategies. Benefiting from the effective encapsulation for PEG and high conductivity of MXene coating, PEG@PAN/MXene composite film with MXene coating loading density of 0.70 mg cm −2 exhibits high thermal energy storage density of 120.77 J g −1 and great EMI shielding performance (EMI SE of 34.409 dB and SSE of 49.086 dB cm 3 g −1 ) in X-band (8–12 GHz). Therefore, this advanced composite film can not only help electronic devices prevent the influence of electromagnetic pollution in the X-band but also play an important role in electronic device thermal management. Additionally, the deposition of nano PVDF@SiO 2 fibers (289 ± 128 nm) endowed the PMF composite film with great hydrophobic properties (water contact angle of 126.5°) to ensure the stable working of hydrophilic MXene coating, thereby breaks the limitation of humid application environments. The finding paves a new way for the development of novel multifunctional EMI shielding composite films for electronic devices.

A nitrogen-deficient g-C 3 N 4 -BiOBr-Bi 2 WO 6 /PVDF composite ultrafiltration membrane with high-efficiency retention and degradation capabilities for various dyes and antibiotics was prepared using a simple in situ deposition combined with phase inversion method. Under normal pressure, the membrane achieved a retention rate of over 95 % for multiple dyes, featured numerous hydrophilic sites, and demonstrated an average pollutant flux of 147.6L·m −2 ·h −1 . In a simulated visible solar light flow-circulation device, the composite membrane exhibited excellent efficiency and final degradation performance, achieving a degradation rate of 97.7 % for RhB within 1 h and a final degradation rate of 99.6 %. DFT calculations provided evidence for the potential distribution and interaction forces between nanoparticles and PVDF molecules, supporting the observed results. The in situ synthesized BiOBr nanomaterials grow and embed within the membrane, forming heterojunctions with an internal electric field alongside other materials. The incorporation of heterojunction materials improves the surface and internal physical structure of the PVDF membrane, endowing it with excellent photocatalytic degradation performance, enhanced hydrophilicity, and improved retention capabilities. Additionally, the composite membrane exhibits outstanding self-cleaning properties. This work provides a broad-spectrum and efficient solution for water pollution treatment.

The DCMD technology for wastewater treatment is very promising. However, it is easily suffered by membrane fouling and wetting. In this study, a Janus membrane was fabricated by coating polyvinylamine (PVAM) and gallic acid (GA) onto one side of a PVDF composite membrane, which another side is covered with POTS-SiO 2 . The PVAM and GA side could bind water to form a hydration layer, thus repel the contaminants. The POTS-SiO 2 side was superhydrophobicity and prevented the membrane wetting. Finally, The Janus membrane presented exceptional performance in separating salt containing emulsified oil by DCMD. It kept a stable flux of 17.0 ± 0.2 Kg·m −2 ·h −1 and a low level conductivity of 0.60 ± 0.02 μS/cm in the cold side during the 36 h DCMD procedure, compared with the pristine PVDF membrane and the PVDF/POTS-SiO 2 membrane. The results presented simultaneously antifouling and antiwetting properties of the Janus membrane. While the Janus membrane can be well used in desalination of emulsified oil containing salt, it has a great potential for application to treat other complex wastewater.

Superwetting oil-water separation membranes are effective materials for treatment of wastewater containing emulsified oil, but the problem of membrane pollution remains a huge challenge during its long-term operation. In this study, we successfully developed a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic membrane using a simple phase separation method. The fabrication process involved three key steps: (1) surface hydroxylation of pristine PVDF using NaOH etching to generate active hydrogen bonds and hydroxyl groups, (2) acrylic acid (AA) grafting onto the hydroxylated PVDF surface to introduce carboxyl functionalities, and (3) in-situ chelation of needle-like ZnO onto the AA-grafted matrix. The synergistic effect of the surface needle-like ZnO and the hydration layer endowed the PVDF-OH/AA@ZnO membrane with an outstanding oil-water separation efficiency of n-hexane up to 99.68 %, and higher than 98 % for various emulsions (e.g. kerosene, petroleum ether, chloroform, and dichloromethane) under gravity. Moreover, compared with the basement membrane, the tensile strength of the modified membrane increased from 106.21 kPa to 153.84 kPa, indicating its excellent mechanical properties under strong external forces. The PVDF-OH/AA@ZnO membrane demonstrated exceptional recycling performance, with a separation efficiency above 97.25 % after five cycles, and exhibited anti-fouling capability with simple water rinsing used to remove surface oil residues. Overall, this study provides a scalable strategy for the design of superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic separation membranes for the practical treatment of oily wastewater.

Despite the membrane technology as an efficient method for treating emulsified oily wastewater, the issue of membrane fouling remains an enormous challenge during extended operation. Hence, a unique self-assembled method was proposed to clean membrane fouling for oil/water (O/W) separation, where the tannic acid/iron (TA/Fe) coating layer improved hydrophilicity and doped with iron nanoparticles to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for removing of the irreversible oil fouling. The TA/Fe coating, which contained phenolic hydroxyl groups, rendered the modified membrane superhydrophilic and underwater oleophobic properties to resist membrane surface oil droplets. The iron nanoparticles/TA/polyvinylidene fluoride (FeNPs/TA/PVDF) achieved notable permeation flux of 1571.13 L m −2 h −1 and 1490 L m −2 h −1 in O/W mixture and oil-in-water emulsion (liquid paraffin as oil phase), respectively. Meanwhile, the membrane exhibited a distinguished oil removal rate, surpassing 98 % for various emulsions (e.g. N-hexane, isooctane, soybean oil). Notably, in the pollution and cyclic experiments, the regeneration water flux of FeNPs/TA/PVDF increased from 71.7 % of pristine PVDF to 91.5 % after final modification, which proved the enhancement of the membrane anti-oil-fouling capability through the deposition of the hydrophilic coating. Moreover, after catalytic cleaning, the water permeation flux of FeNPs/TA/PVDF could reach approximately 90 % of its original value. Obviously, we observed that FeNPs/TA/PVDF exhibited a high regenerative capacity during the PMS-assisted catalytic cleaning process, where the radical and nonradical pathways coexisted. Generally, the research offered a simple approach to creating functional membranes suitable for efficient O/W separation.

Water pollution is a critical global environmental challenge, necessitating efficient and innovative remediation strategies. This work outlines the successful synthesis of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite membranes infused with varying proportions of magnesium-doped zinc oxide (MgZnO) using an economical and simplified interfacial film-forming method. The MgZnO0.1PVDF1–1 composite membrane demonstrates exceptional and stable purification performance, significantly reducing the amount of antibiotics in water through a combination of static adsorption and ultrasound-guided piezoelectric degradation. SEM/FTIR/XPS/BET analyses postulate the underlying adsorption mechanisms as surface complexation, ion-dipole interaction, and cation exchange coupled with piezoelectric catalysis via the ion-dipole moment effect. The degradation process leverages a unique converse and positive piezoelectric effect, inducing surface mechanical deformation and internal free radical polarization and fostering outstanding tetracycline (TC) degradation. Comprehensive experiments considering variables such as pH, concentration, and reaction time further substantiate the superior performance of MgZnO0.1PVDF1–1, achieving an impressive maximum TC removal ratio of 86%. The high TC removal efficiency, enduring recycle performance, and economical operative method underline MgZnO0.1PVDF1–1 as a significant potential for mitigating antibiotic water pollution.

Introducing high dielectric-constant inorganic fillers into a high-broaden-strength polymer matrix is a crucial strategy to achieve a high-performance energy storage polymer composite. However, the interfacial coupling between the inorganic fillers and polymer matrix has always been a predicament for optimal performance. Herein, a multilayer interface structure, i.e., TiO2/SiO2, SiO2/polydopamine (PDA), and PDA/PVDF, are developed to resist the applied high electric field and improve the interfacial polarization simultaneously. TiO2 nanorods (NRs) with [001]-oriented rutile polymorph are synthesized by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) assisted hydrothermal reaction, which is further decorated with a SiO2 layer and a subsequent PDA layer in order to incorporate well into the PVDF matrix using a solution casting process, finally forming the TiO2@SiO2@PDA/PVDF composite film. The optimal composite film incorporating [001]-TiO2 NRs exhibits an ultrahigh energy density (Ue) of 29.8 J/cm3 at a high Eb of 532 MV/m, sharply superior to the TiO2 counterpart-based films (e.g., TiO2 nanoparticle (NPs) based, and with or without the SiO2/PDA layer, which only gives a maximum Ue of 16 J/cm3 in TiO2@SiO2@PDA NPs/PVDF), and also the similarly inorganic-polymer systems previously reported. This work not only demonstrates an inorganic-polymer hybrid composite film with high electrostatic storage density but also highlights a multilayer interface structure route to alter interfacial microstructures and achieve superior energy storage performance.

Conductive multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as well as piezoelectric zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles are frequently used as a single additive and dispersed in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) solutions for the fabrication of piezoelectric composite films. In this study, MWCNT/ZnO binary dispersions are used as spinning liquids to fabricate composite nanofibrous films by electrospinning. Binary additives are conducive to increasing the crystallinity, piezoelectric voltage coefficient, and consequent piezoelectricity of as-spun films owing to the stretch-enhanced polarization of the electrospinning process under an applied electric field. PCZ–1.5 film (10 wt. % PVDF/0.1 wt. % MWCNTs/1.5 wt. % ZnO nanoparticles) contains the maximum β-phase content of 79.0% and the highest crystallinity of 87.9% in nanofibers. A sensor using a PCZ–1.5 film as a functional layer generates an open-circuit voltage of 10 V as it is subjected to impact loads with an amplitude of 6 mm at 10 Hz. The piezoelectric sensor reaches a power density of 0.33 μW/cm 2 and a force sensitivity of 582 mV/N. In addition, the sensor is successfully applied to test irregular motions of a bending finger and stepping foot. The result indicates that electrospun PVDF/MWCNT/ZnO nanofibrous films are suitable for wearable devices.
