A new Ru(II) complex [Ru(dmb) 2 (pdta)](ClO 4 ) 2 ( 1 ) (dmb = 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine, pdta = 3-(pyridine-2-yl)-as-triazino [5,6-f]-acenaphthylene) was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis (EA), ES–MS, 1 H NMR, UV–Vis and CV. The DNA-binding properties of complex 1 were investigated by absorption titration, thermal denaturation , viscosity measurement and photoactivated cleavage. The DNA-binding constant was determined to be 2.37 ± 0.14 × 10 5 M −1 ( s = 1.90 ± 0.04) by electronic absorption titration, indicating that complex 1 interacts with DNA through intercalative mode. The redox peak potentials of this complex in CV were rationally assigned with the frontier molecular orbital stereographs resulting from the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The photoactivated cleavage and cleavage mechanism of plasmid pBR322 DNA in the presence of complex 1 and various inhibitors were studied. The experiment for detecting the formation of singlet oxygen photo-sensitized by complex 1 was carried out, and the antioxidant activity of the Ru-complex and the ligand pdta against hydroxyl radical was also investigated.

A multimode sensing and imaging platform based on surface modification strategy of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ doped SiO 2 nanoparticles (RuSiO 2 NPs) was constructed for versatile detection of glutathione (GSH). RuSiO 2 NPs as the luminophore models had outstanding fluorescence (FL) and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signals. Furthermore, its FL signal could be captured by electrophoresis analyzer, and the ECL signal could be imaged with mobile phone to achieve visualization. So, a unique and convenient multi-mode sensing and imaging platform could be developed based on RuSiO 2 NPs. SiO 2 NPs could realize enrichment of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ based on the nanoconfined effect to achieve signal amplification, and its surface was rich with abundant hydroxyl functional groups, which offered a channel for surface modification. Sulfhydryl modification on the RuSiO 2 NPs was realized by using silane coupling agent, and KMnO 4 was used to in situ generate MnO 2 shell on the surface of RuSiO 2 NPs for quenching its ECL, FL, and colorimetric (CL) signals based on resonance energy transfer (RET). Target GSH could reduce MnO 2 shell to realize recovery of all signals, thus achieving the label-free multimode detection of GSH. Therefore, this work developed a multimode sensing and imaging platform without signal labels or layer-by-layer assembly of electrodes, which had the advantages of simple steps, low cost, and high detection accuracy, showing important application potential in the field of bioanalysis.

The development of acid-sensitive OER (Oxygen Evolution Reaction) electrocatalysts based on ruthenium oxides is a crucial step toward achieving large-scale hydrogen production in low-cost Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. However, a major challenge in this field is to overcome the tendency of ruthenium-based metal oxide dissolving in acidic environments, which affects long-term stability. In this study, we employed MIL-88B(Cr) as a precursor and used a two-step annealing method to prepare trimetallic metal oxides Cr 0.5 Co x Ru 0.5-x O 2-δ . Detailed experimental measurements demonstrate that the introduction of Co reduced the volume of individual catalyst crystallites without disrupting the rutile crystal structure and inherent activity of CrO 2 @RuO 2 . Simultaneously, Co and Cr doping lowered the oxidation state of Ru within the catalyst system. Lower oxidation states of Ru are more stable during the OER reaction, ensuring the stability of this catalyst to be at least 100 hours. Furthermore, Co incorporation raises the energy required for oxygen vacancy formation, reduced the involvement of lattice oxygen, and enhanced the catalyst's activity. The catalyst Cr 0.5 Co 0.17 Ru 0.33 O 2-δ with the best performance exhibited the overpotential of only 224 mV at 10 mA cm -2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . This study offers a viable strategy for developing highly active and stable catalysts in acidic media by controlling the electronic structure of RuO 2 .

A novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) enhanced method for sensitive, selective and accurate ECL detection of ascorbic acid (AA) is developed using tris (2,2′-bipyridine) ruthenium (II) (Ru(bpy) 3 2+ ) embedded into zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Ru(bpy) 3 2+ @UiO-67 MOFs). AA is oxidized by cerium ion (Ce 4+ ) into dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) and hydrolyzed into 2,3-diketogulonic acid (DKG). The oxidation product DKG has α-keto acid structure and can form acyl radical, which enhances the ECL of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ @UiO-67 MOFs nearly 220 times. Therefore, AA is used as an efficient ECL co-reactant of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ @UiO-67 MOFs and applied in highly sensitive ECL enhanced detection of AA from 0.1 μM to 100 μM with a limit of detection of 29 nM. More importantly, this method also has high selectivity in AA detection toward other common ions, substances with similar structure to AA and some reducing substances owing to specific α-keto acid structure of the oxidation product DKG of AA. It achieves ECL enhanced detection of AA in tablets, chewable tablets and beverages. Graphical

Electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia reduction (NO 3 RR) offers a sustainable alternative to fossil-fuel-dependent Haber-Bosch processes. However, limited NH 3 yield and unsatisfactory faradaic efficiency hindered the development of NO 3 RR. Herein, a unique Ru/V o -NiCo 2 O 4 heterostructure is reported as an effective NO 3 RR catalyst, in which the NiCo 2 O 4 site preferentially adsorbs nitrate, while the Ru site provides active H species for the subsequent reduction process. Structural characterization reveals that enrichment of ruthenium on the surface of nickel-cobalt oxide catalysts by electrochemical deposition not only promotes the generation of abundant oxygen vacancies, but also promotes the charge redistribution and the formation of built-in electric field inside the catalysts, which improves the electrical conductivity as well as promotes the generation of a large number of active sites in the NO 3 RR and EGOR processes. Ru/V o -NiCo 2 O 4 exhibits excellent bifunctional catalytic activity for NO 3 RR and ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR). Specifically, in the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction for ammonia production, the Faraday efficiency reached up to 95.14 % with an ammonia yield of 17.20 mg h −1 cm −2 at - 0.3 V. The catalyst also performed well for the oxidation of ethylene glycol, with a voltage of only 0.469 V required to achieve a current density of 50 mA cm −2 . After continuous electrolysis for 12 h at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 , the formate Faraday efficiency reaches as high as 88 %. Moreover, utilization EGOR instead of OER to form NO 3 RR||EGOR full cell not only realize energy-saving NH 3 production, meanwhile achieving value-added formate product. For the constructed NO₃RR||EGOR full cell, its formate Faraday efficiency reaches up to 94 % after continuous electrolysis for 12 h at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . This work provides a strategy to achieve highly efficient, energy-saving ammonia synthesis via rational design of bifunctional electrocatalysts and construction of a co-electrolysis system, which carries substantial significance for both energy and environmental sectors.

A self-supporting material of ZnNi 2 O 2 was synthesized and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) served as carriers for Ru(bpy) 3 2+ , enhancing stability of the sensor and improving the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) value in this experiment. The ECL sensor for specific recognition of melamine (MEL) was developed based on ZnNi 2 O 2 and Ru(bpy) 3 2+ @HNTs as dual ECL reagents. The maximum initial signal was obtained in the presence of co-reactant tripropylamine (TPrA) through the synergy of ZnNi 2 O 2 and Ru(bpy) 3 2+ @HNTs. A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) containing specific recognition sites for MEL was to enable selective recognition, with pyrrole serving as the functional monomer and MEL as the template molecule. The quenching effect was observed as the concentration of MEL increased. Under optimal conditions, the sensor demonstrated the linear correlation between the change of ECL signal and the logarithm of MEL concentration from the range of 1.0 × 10 −12 to 1.0 × 10 −7 mol·L −1 . Satisfactory results were obtained for the detection of MEL in milk powder.

The synergistic effects in bimetallic catalysts drive significant interest for hydrogenation catalysis. In this work, a series of Pd-Ru bimetallic catalysts supported on N-doped porous carbon were synthesized, with the optimized Ru₁Pd₁/NPC-1 exhibiting outstanding pyridine hydrogenation performance. Quantitative conversion was achieved under mild reaction (room temperature, H 2 balloon pressure), accompanied by remarkable substrate adaptability and recyclability. The introduced N species and hierarchical porous structure in the NPC carrier synergistically facilitate the dispersion and stabilization of metal nanoparticles, thereby forming highly dispersed metallic clusters with exceptional structural robustness. Furthermore, the formation of a Pd-Ru bimetallic alloy establishes novel active centers that strengthen reactant adsorption and activation, ultimately leading to superior catalytic activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborate that the bimetallic system exhibits optimized adsorption energy and accelerated piperidine desorption efficiency. These results establish a foundation for designing stable and efficient metallic catalysts enabling sustainable pyridine conversion.

The surface electronic structure and morphology of catalysts have a crucial impact on the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction performance. This work reports on the fabrication of a Ru-doped WP/WP2 heterojunction nanosheet array electrode via a one-step phosphating treatment of a Ru-doped WO3 precursor. Benefitting from the large electrochemical active surface of nanosheet arrays, rich WP/WP2 heterojunction interface, and trace Ru atom doping, the catalyst has a fairly low overpotential of 58.0 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 50.71 mV dec−1 in acid solution toward the electrocatalytic HER. Further, theoretical calculations unveil that Ru atom doping and interface effect synergistically optimized the electronic structure of the catalyst and hence weakened the adsorption capacity of the catalyst surface toward hydrogen (H), which lowered the Gibbs free energy (ΔGH*) and consequently effectively improved the HER performance. This work may open new avenues for developing advanced nanoarray electrodes with efficient electrochemical energy conversion.

The development of hydrogenation catalysts with high performance and stability could decrease the byproducts and simplify the follow-up process in the industrial process. Optimizing supported catalysts through support improvement is a feasible approach to balance effectiveness and cost. In view of this, cubic perovskite NaNbO3 was modified with organosiloxane to form a heterophase junction support consisting of amorphous silica and NaNbO3 crystal. On the basis of this, the supported Ru catalyst displayed superior performance for α-pinene hydrogenation with almost complete conversion, cis-pinane selectivity, and good stability. The relationship between the structure and performance of the catalyst was systematically investigated by comprehensive experiments and multiple characterization technologies. Due to the formation of the heterophase junction, the surface hydrophobicity, specific surface area, and electron properties of the catalyst were optimized, leading to the good dispersity of the catalyst in the hydrogenation mixture and excellent adsorption and charge transfer ability, which should account for the unique performance of the catalyst, as confirmed by a series of experiments, characterizations, and DFT calculations. This work proposes an effective approach to optimize the surface structure and electronic properties of the catalysts through constructing crystallized and amorphous heterophase junction support, which is theoretically significant for the design and development of cost-effective heterogeneous hydrogenation catalysts.

MicroRNA-17 (miR-17) is a critical biomarker linked to various cancers and diseases, underscoring the need for sensitive and selective detection methods. Herein, an ultra-sensitive electrochemiluminescent (ECL) sensor for miR-17 detection utilizing MOF-derived porous CuFe 2 O 4 nanospheres and CRISPR/Cas13a trans-cleavage-triggered hybridization chain reaction (HCR) amplification was presented. The porous CuFe 2 O 4 nanospheres possessed a high surface area and excellent catalytic activity, significantly enhancing ECL emission. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating that MOF-derived CuFe 2 O 4 can effectively enhance the electrochemiluminescence of Ru(bpy) 3 2 ⁺ for miR-17 detection. The CRISPR/Cas13a system provided miR-17 recognition and trans-cleavage activity, triggering HCR for signal amplification. Under optimized conditions, the biosensor exhibited a wide linear detection range from 20 aM to 5000 aM, with a detection limit of 9.23 aM. The system discriminated miR-17 from closely related miRNAs with negligible cross-reactivity, which demonstrated its outstanding selectivity. Practical applicability was confirmed by successful quantification of miR-17 in diluted human serum which achieved recovery rates between 95.2% and 104.8%. The results validated the biosensor’s potential for early disease diagnosis and clinical monitoring of miR-17-associated disorders.

A sensitive and ratiometric electrochemical biosensor was developed for the determination of dimethoate via alkaline phosphatase (ALP) mediated dissolution of nano-MnO 2 and [Ru(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ (Ru(III)) redox recycling. The electroactive probe Ru(III) was adsorbed on the nano-MnO 2 with the high specific surface area through electrostatic interaction to form the MnO 2 -Ru(III) nanocomposite, which was then fixed on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode. When the dimethoate inhibited the catalytic activity of ALP in a homogeneous system, the hydrolysate L -ascorbic acid (AA) produced by ALP hydrolysis of L -ascorbic acid-trisodium 2-phosphate (AAP) decreased. The solution was then incubated with a glassy carbon electrode modified by MnO 2 -Ru(III). At this time, only a small amount of MnO 2 -Ru(III) was decomposed and Ru(III) was rapidly electroreduced to Ru(II) on the surface of the electrode. The in-situ produced Ru(II) was chemically oxidized back to Ru(III) by Fe(III). The redox recycling of Ru(III) was completed and the Ru(III) reduction current signal was amplified. The process consumed part of Fe(III) to reduce the reduction current signal of Fe(III), and the ratio of the two reduction currents (I Ru(III) /I Fe(III) ) increased significantly. The I Ru(III) /I Fe(III) value increased with the increase of dimethoate concentration in the linear range of 0.01–300 ng mL −1 , and the detection limit was 6.3 pg mL −1 . It has been successfully applied to the determination of dimethoate in oilseed rape and lettuce with a satisfactory result.
