Facile construction of an Ag/MoSe2 composite based non-enzymatic amperometric sensor for hydrogen peroxide

Ran Tian,Dong Li,Tao Zhou,Xue-Qiang Chu,Danhua Ge,Xiaojun Chen

We report an electrochemical non-enzymatic method for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) detection based on Ag nanoparticle-decorated MoSe2 (Ag/MoSe2-500) hybrid nanostructures. These hybrid nanocomposites are easily prepared by in situ reduction of Ag+ on the surface of MoSe2. Benefiting from the strong synergy of Ag nanoparticles and MoSe2 nanosheets in enhancing electrical conductivity, the Ag/MoSe2-500 hybrid nanostructures perform excellent sensing activity for H2O2 electrocatalytic reduction with a wide linear range of 0.02–15.2 mM, a high sensitivity of 400.0 μA mM−1 cm−2 and a low detection limit of 0.39 μM (S/N = 3). Furthermore, the sensor displays satisfactory reproducibility and stability and is applicable for practical quantitative analysis of H2O2 in milk and orange juice samples. In a word, Ag/MoSe2-500 nanocomposites are promising candidates for non-enzymatic H2O2 sensing in the fields of biology and food science.

Ag+–3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine as a probe for colorimetric detection of ascorbic acid in beverages

Xin Shu,Yongren Chen,Chunling Yuan,Yilin Wang

A novel and sensitive method for ascorbic acid (AA) determination utilizing Ag+–3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a colorimetric probe was proposed. In a weak acidic medium, Ag+ could oxidize TMB to oxidized TMB (ox-TMB) and cause a blue color solution with an absorption peak centered at 652 nm. However, the addition of AA could induce the reduction of ox-TMB, leading to shallower blueness and lower absorbance. Under the selected experimental conditions, there was a good linear relationship between the decrease of absorbance (ΔA) and AA concentration in the range of 0.5–60 μM, and the detection limit was as low as 0.23 μM. The feasibility of this method was verified in commercial beverages with recoveries of 95.8–104.1%. The method has the advantages of simplicity and practicability. More importantly, no nanomaterials need to be prepared.

In situ reduction and stabilization of Ag NPs onto magnetic composites for rapid hydrogenation catalysis

Wang Zhen-Zhen,Zhai Shang-Ru,Zhai Bin,An Qing-Da,Li Shao-Wei

Abstract A novel core–shell-structured Ag-based magnetic functional polymer nanocatalyst, i.e., Fe 3 O 4 @SN/GLA@chitosan-Ag (SN represents animo-functionalized SiO 2 , GLA signifies glutaraldehyde), was fabricated via a simple and environmentally friendly method. The magnetic separation property of Fe 3 O 4 , the protection effects of SiO 2 , the reduction and stabilization activities of chitosan, and the catalytic property of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) in the multifunctional catalyst system were efficiently combined using glutaraldehyde as bridging agent. The Ag NPs with average diameter about 2–11 nm were generated in situ and stabilized by chitosan, which acted as reducing agent and stabilizer in the absence of other potentially toxic reagents. Furthermore, the reduction, chelation ability of chitosan, and the size of Ag NPs were found to be tunable, thereby enabling the preparation of other noble metal catalysts with tailored properties. Most importantly, the as-prepared catalyst exhibited superior catalytic performance (the reduction reaction was finished within 3 min) and reusability (reusable for at least six times) in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. Interfacial Charge Transfer of WO3 Nanorods Decorated with Ag Nanoparticles for a Nonlinear Absorption Modulator

Xue Wang,Li-Yuan Wang,Cheng-Bao Yao,Ze-Miao Wang,Yu Liu,Cai-Hong Jiang

The metal/metal oxide semiconductor materials with special photoelectric properties have been widely used for the development of novel photoelectric devices. However, electron transfers at the interfaces of metal and metal oxide are unclear under a photoexcitation process. Herein, the pure WO3 nanorods and Ag nanoparticles (NPs)-loaded WO3 (AWO) nanorods were synthesized by a hydrothermal technique and a two-step method, which includes hydrothermal and magnetron processes. Their corresponding electron excitation and relaxation properties have been revealed by absorption/emission spectra and transmission curves under nonlinear excitation of an ultrafast laser. The dependence relationship for the morphology and structure of one-dimensional (1D) WO3 nanomaterial orientation on the parameters’ adjustment (reaction time and reactant concentration) and formation mechanism was studied. The 1D WO3 nanomaterials show obvious longitudinal growth in the (200) orientation, as well as lateral growth in the (001) and (110) orientations. The size and distribution effects of Ag NPs on the optical properties of WO3 have also been investigated. On the basis of quantum particle coupling between metal (Ag) and metal oxide materials (WO3 nanorods), electron–hole pairs were generated in the semiconductor and strongly enhanced the radiative recombination. The Z-scan results illustrated that the maximum nonlinear absorption coefficient of the AWO (6 W) nanorods was obtained. When charge transfer happens in Ag NPs, the density of the electronic states in the excited/defect states of the WO3 can be regulated. For AWO nanorods, the ground state of Ag undergoes a saturation absorption process and results in reverse saturation absorption of the excited/defect states. Because of their remarkable nonlinear-optical properties, the proposed AWO nanorods will be potential nanocomposite materials for the development of nonlinear absorption modulator devices.

Ag-loaded mesoporous bioactive glasses against Enterococcus faecalis biofilm in root canal of human teeth

Wei FAN,Daming WU,Tengjiao MA,Bing FAN

Ag-loaded mesoporous bioactive glass (Ag-MBG) powders were synthesized and characterized. The ions release of Ag-MBGs in Tris-HCl and the pH stability of simulated body fluids after immersing Ag-MBGs were tested. Root canals were inoculated with Enterococcus faecalis for 4 weeks, and the antibacterial activity of MBGs, Ag-MBGs and calcium hydroxide against E. faecalis biofilm were evaluated. Results showed that Ag-MBGs possessed highly ordered mesoporous structure with silver nanoparticles deposited in the mesopores, which enabled a sustained Ag ionsreleased. The biofilms treated with Ag-MBGs showed a significant structural disruption compared with MBGs. These results indicated that Ag-MBGs possess a potent antibacterial effect against E.faecalis biofilm in root canal, and the antibacterial activity was induced by the release of Ag ions from Ag-MBGs.

Zhuo-Rui Li,Bo Jiang,Xiao-Hui Zhang,Guo-Zhi Han

In this paper, we develop a novel pompon-like magnetic hollow SiO 2 -supported Ag (SiO 2 @Ag) nanoparticles , in which small silver and magnetic nanoparticles were loaded on the hollow silica shell by one-pot solvothermal method . FT-IR, XRD , SEM, TEM and BET were applied to characterized the structure and morphology of the magnetic hollow SiO 2 @Ag nanoparticles. The synthesized material has not only high stability and monodispersity , but also uniform surface element distribution along with good magnetic response. On this basis, we studied the catalytic performance of this pompon-like magnetic hollow SiO 2 @Ag nanoparticles for the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds, and further carried out extended researches on substrates scope. Research results indicate that the pompon-like magnetic hollow SiO 2 @Ag nanoparticles have broad-spectrum catalytic activity for the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds. After recycling for 8 times, it can still maintain 90% catalytic efficiency. This study provides a facile strategy for constructing hollow hierarchical structure, and expands the application of noble metal nanoparticles in organic transformation.

Peroxidase-like Au@Pt nanozyme as an integrated nanosensor for Ag+ detection by LSPR spectroscopy

Yueyue Tian,Yancao Chen,Mei Chen,Zhi-Ling Song,Bin Xiong,Xiao-Bing Zhang

Here we report the peroxidase-like [email protected] nanozyme as an integrated nanosensor for selective detection of silver ions (Ag + ), where the nanozyme plays the roles as both the signal trigger and reporter simultaneously. This method relies on two critical chemical reactions, including (1) the unique inhibitory effect of Ag + on the nanozyme triggered H 2 O 2 decomposition at weak acid environment and (2) H 2 O 2 induced Ag + reduction onto the nanozyme surface at basic environment, leading to a blueshift in the localized surface plasmonic resonance wavelength (LSPR λ max ) of the nanosensor. With this simple strategy, we demonstrated the sensitive and selective detection of Ag + over a dynamic range from 0.5 to 1000 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 500 nM by UV–visible spectroscopy, which is below the permitted level of Ag + in drinking water by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This method also exhibits satisfying recovery efficiency for Ag + detection both in tap water and spring water from the Yuelu Mountain. With this satisfying sensing performance and excellent stability of nanoprobes, this strategy is promising for the detection of Ag + in environment monitoring and food safety analysis.

Work-function-tuned Ag/Ni coated graphene for enhanced conductivity and strength in aluminum composites

Youming Luo,Yaling Huang,Xuhui Zhang,Mingxuan Tang,Yucan Lei,Wendan Wang,Quanfang Chen

Simultaneously enhancing the mechanical strength and electrical conductivity of aluminum-matrix composites remains challenging because conventional strengthening strategies usually introduce defects and interfaces that intensify electron scattering. In this work, graphene surfaces were coated with Ag or Ni via electroless deposition to regulate the graphene/Al interface through work-function differences. Few-layer graphene was coated with Ag (lower work function than graphene) or Ni (higher work function than graphene) via electroless deposition, dispersed into aluminum powders by ball milling, and consolidated by high-pressure sintering at 1 GPa. The Ni-coated graphene/Al composite achieves an ultimate tensile strength of 336 MPa, corresponding to a 78.7% increase over identically processed pure aluminum. In contrast, the Ag-coated graphene/Al composite delivers an electrical conductivity of 73.37% IACS, representing a 17.58% improvement relative to the pure aluminum, while maintaining a high ultimate tensile strength of 318 MPa. The optimization of the ultimate tensile strength and conductivity follows distinct pathways, governed respectively by interfacial phase-architecture strengthening and work-function-induced electronic doping. This strategy offers a scalable route for synergistically regulating interfacial phases and electronic structures toward high-strength and high-conductivity aluminum-matrix composites for structural–functional integration. Hybrid Ag/Au nanocavity arrays for ultrasensitive SERS discrimination of molecular isomers via machine learning

Zhiming Chen,Jiabin Chen,Haoming Bao,Kaitao Liu,Pan Zeng,Fan Yang,Wei Cao,Dongqi Yang,An Cao,Tao Zhang,Yue Li

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been one of the efficient strategies for trace molecular analysis, but the traditional substrates with sharp tips cannot effectively detecting the molecular isomers. Here, we develop a facile way to fabricate large-area, reproducible Ag/Au nanocavity arrays by the combination of microsphere-templated soft lithography and self-assembly. Compared to the flat and convex substrate, the Ag/Au units arranged on the concave surface exhibit a high-density of hotspots via spatial light confinement and multi-reflection-enhanced electromagnetic coupling, which enables highly sensitive detection of probe molecules down to10 −12 M. Moreover, by integrating machine learning algorithms, the test set shows a coefficient of determination (R 2 ) of 0.9896, achieving advanced training performance for classifying four structurally analogous quinolone antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, danofloxacin, and enoxacin) with a quantitative prediction of 10 −10  M. This work demonstrates a robust pathway for the controllable fabrication of high-performance SERS substrates for the development of intelligent, quantitative, and on-site sensing platforms in complex practical scenarios. Superior Piezocatalytic Activity and Environmental Adaptability in Micro-Nano-Engineered BaTiO3/PVDF@Ag Composite Structure

Bing Xie,Wenpeng Gao,Zhiyong Liu,Kun Guo,Qingping Wang,Shenglin Jiang,Chris Bowen,Huajie Luo,Tianyu Li

Piezocatalysis, the direct conversion of mechanical energy into chemical reactivity, offers a promising route for sustainable pollutant removal and chemical synthesis. However, practical applications require materials that are able to simultaneously deliver high activity, stability, and ease of recycling. Here, we report a flexible micro-nano-engineered BaTiO 3 /PVDF@Ag composite film, whereby {111} BaTiO 3 single-crystal microsheets are embedded in a poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix and decorated with photo-deposited Ag nanoparticles. This BaTiO 3 /PVDF@Ag composite microstructure design endows the optimal composite with outstanding piezocatalytic performance, including a Rhodamine B degradation rate constant of 0.24 min −1 , a hydrogen peroxide generation rate of 3520 µmol g −1 h −1 , and a CO 2 reduction rate of 535 µmol g −1 h −1 , while maintaining its activity over repeated cycles. Systematic structural, spectroscopic, and electrochemical characterization, together with theoretical simulations, reveal that the ferroelectric BaTiO 3 and electroactive β -phase PVDF enhance the local piezoelectric potential under mechanical stimulation, while the Ag nanoparticles act as efficient electron traps and catalytic sites. Interfacial polarization as resulting from the dielectric and conductivity mismatches between the composite components also reduces charge-transfer resistance and thereby accelerates carrier separation and migration. These synergistic effects enable efficient formation of reactive oxygen species, thereby driving high H 2 O 2 yields and CO 2 reduction. The mechanically robust film can also be easily recovered and reused, demonstrating a viable route to green, high-performance piezocatalysts for environmental applications.

Ultralow-Loading, High Activity: Boosting Photocatalysis with Ag Single Atoms via Microenvironment and Interface Tailoring

Deyan Bu,Qinfang Ma,Pan Zhao,Anping Zhu,Wenzhao Liu,Haijiao Xie,Zhaoyang Wu

This work departs from conventional single-atom loading strategies, instead focusing on the optimization of the single-atom Ag microenvironment and its interface states with the support to enhance catalyst performance. Therefore, through crystal plane and defect engineering, the (101) and (100) facets are exposed in oxygen-deficient anatase TiO2. Ag single atoms are anchored on the exposed facets at an ultralow loading of 0.043 wt %. Combined theoretical and experimental results reveal that annealing at 400 °C facilitates the optimal Ag single-atom adsorption configurations, whereby Ag atoms preferentially anchor at O sites and oxygen vacancies on the TiO2 (100) and (101) facets, forming Ag−O and Ag−Ti bonds, respectively. These configurations, driven by thermal annealing, result in optimized interfacial states that not only stabilize the single-atom Ag but also establish efficient atomic-level electron transfer pathways that enable the rapid extraction of photogenerated electrons, suppressing carrier recombination and enhancing charge separation. Despite ultralow Ag loading, the Ag/IO-TiO2-400 catalyst exhibits enhanced performance, achieving an approximately 2.2-fold increase in the rate constant compared to pristine inverse opal TiO2 (IO-TiO2). It degrades nearly 100% of RhB (50 mg L−1) within 20 min (rate constant: 0.2769 min−1) and 88.4% of BPA within 70 min.

Toxicity-shielded Ag-Pt-ICG nanocomposite with photothermal-enhanced ionic release for lung cancer therapy

Min Gao,Gege Li,Xiaoran Zheng,Yang Yang,Hai Zhong,Yunlei Zhang,Xiuwei Zhang

Background Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) show antitumor potential but are limited by off-target oxidative toxicity. By integrating platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) with indocyanine green (ICG)-mediated near-infrared (NIR) responsiveness, we developed an Ag-Pt-ICG (API) nanocomposite for fluorescence imaging and combined lung cancer therapy with enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Methods Ultrasmall Ag-Pt nanocomposites were synthesized via a seeded-growth strategy and subsequently functionalized with peptides to yield the intermediate conjugate AP-peptide (AP/PP). The photosensitizer indocyanine green bearing an NHS-ester group (ICG-NHS) was conjugated to the nanocomposites via peptide linkage, yielding API constructs. Comprehensive physicochemical characterization, including morphology, particle size, elemental composition, and colloidal stability, was conducted. We evaluated biosafety, and antitumor performance through a series of in vitro and in vivo assays. Results The API-based nanocomposites possessed typical nanoscale morphology and showed superior dispersion stability in serum-supplemented DMEM compared with PBS. Upon 808 nm NIR light irradiation, these nanocomposites achieved efficient photothermal conversion, excellent photothermal cycling stability, and NIR-triggered ROS production, endowing them with combined photothermal/photodynamic therapeutic effects. Under acidic conditions at pH 6.5, the nanocomposites could release silver ions into the surrounding medium, and 808 nm laser irradiation further accelerated silver ion release relative to the control group. In vitro results revealed that combined treatment with API nanocomposites and 808 nm NIR irradiation significantly suppressed the viability of A549 cells and elevated intracellular ROS levels. In vivo experiments confirmed that the combined treatment of API nanocomposites with 808 nm NIR laser exerted prominent tumor growth inhibition and alleviated tumor burden in tumor-xenografted mice compared with control groups. Forty-eight-hour in vivo fluorescence imaging confirmed the effective tumor accumulation of the nanocomposites. The fluorescence signal gradually decreased at later time points, suggesting time-dependent elimination while maintaining detectable tumor retention during the observation period. Furthermore, preliminary biosafety assessment confirmed no evident acute systemic toxicity under the tested conditions, which was evidenced by stable body weight changes, normal liver and renal function-related serum biochemical parameters, as well as hematoxylin-eosin staining results of major vital organs. Collectively, all these findings demonstrate that the as-prepared API nanocomposites are promising multifunctional nanoplatforms for NIR-activated combined tumor therapy with satisfactory biocompatibility. Conclusion The NIR-activated API hybrid nanoplatform synergizes photothermal-photodynamic therapy with Ag-induced cytotoxicity while suppressing off-target ROS toxicity via Pt-mediated antioxidant activity. This approach offers a clinically translatable strategy to enhance both the therapeutic efficacy and safety profile of metal-based nanotherapeutics.
