Chloride-Derived Bimetallic Cu-Fe Nanoparticles for High-Selective Nitrate-to-Ammonia Electrochemical Catalysis

Zixuan Tang,Zehui Bai,Xin Li,Le Ding,Bin Zhang,Xinghua Chang

Cu-based bimetallic materials have been widely reported as efficient catalysts for electrocatalytic nitrate reduction. However, the faradaic efficiency and selectivity are still far from satisfactory. Herein, Cu-Fe bimetallic nanoalloys with adjustable Cu/Fe ratios are successfully prepared through a reactive mechanical milling approach with CuCl2, FeCl3and Na as the starting materials. The optimized Cu3Fe exhibits excellent nitrate conversion efficiency of 81.1% and 70.3% ammonia selectivity at −0.7 V vs. RHE within 6 h under 0.1 M Na2SO4and 100 ppm NO3−. The Fe-introduction-induced upshift of thed-band center is identified to be beneficial for promoting nitrate adsorption on Cu3Fe. Moreover, favorable H generation under the assistance of Fe could effectively accelerate the stepwise hydrogenation during electrocatalytic nitrate reduction, resulting in significantly improved NH4+selectivity. This work supplies valuable insights for the rational design of transition-metal-based bimetallic catalysts for electrocatalytic nitrate reduction.Keywords:Cu-Fe bimetallic catalysts;nitrate to ammonia;d-band center regulation

A novel strategy to improve giant magnetoresistance effect of Co/Cu multilayered nanowires arrays

Shijia Fan,Changjiang Zhou,Haoran Xu,Jingcai Xu,Hui-Min Wen,John Q. Xiao,Jun Hu

Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect exhibits high potential applications in ultrahigh density magnetic recording, magnetic sensors and electronic devices. Many methods were developed to improve the GMR, such as changing the diameters or content ratio of Co to Cu etc. In this work, we have successfully grown a new Co/Cu multilayered magnetic nanowires arrays (MNAs) with gradient diameter (GDMNAs). Very interestingly, we demonstrate much enhanced GMR in the GDMNAs. Moreover, it shows higher thermal stability simultaneously. This is a novel strategy to improve GMR. Generally, the diameter ( d ) and edge-to-edge separation ( s ) of MNAs play a significant role in determining the magnetic properties . If d < s , exchange interaction dominants. If d > s , dipolar interaction dominates. When we design a new GDMNAs with d < s at one end and d > s at the other, much better multilayered structures are observed on the larger end. Surprisingly, the magnetic anisotropy is found to be dominated by the portion of MNAs with d < s . Combining both properties in GDMNAs, we achieve the highest GMR value of 27% in reported Co/Cu MNAs. This design strategy not only reveals new interesting physics, which remains to be understood, but also useful to other applications based on MNAs.

Cu nanoclusters on N-doped carbon nanotubes as efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

Yifan Song,Tianyu Zhang,Guangda Zhou,Peizhi Liu,Xiaoli Yan,Bingshe Xu,Junjie Guo

Earth-rich transition metal-based catalysts are considered to be the most promising candidates to alternate noble metal-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Nevertheless, the practical applications have been hampered due to their poor electrocatalytic behaviors and stability. Here, we report the facial thesis of Cu nanoclusters supported on N-doped carbon nanotubes by a simple grinding and heat treatment method, which presented a superior electrocatalytic performance than commercial Pt/C. In alkaline media, an onset potential (E 0 ) and half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.98 V and 0.88 V (RHE) have been achieved, respectively. In addition, the synthesized catalysts present a good tolerance and long-term stability to methanol, and exhibit less than 7% H 2 O 2 formation. It is inferred that the enhanced electrocatalytic behavior could be attributed to the formation of Cu-N X active sites, which are coupled into the nitrogen-rich carbon nanotubes. This low-cost, extremely durable and stable electrocatalyst showed a great potential as an efficient cathode material for a variety of renewable energy conversion technologies, such as fuel cells and metal-air cells.

Modulation of Antioxidant Attributes and Grain Yield in Fragrant Rice by Exogenous Cu Application

Cheng Siren,Fang Zhenming,Cheng Xianchao,Wu Yizhu,Mo Lifang,Yan Chongyang,Zhou Langshan,Ren Yong

Despite copper (Cu) being an essential nutrient for the growth and development of all living organisms, the yield and tolerance mechanisms of fragrant rice under Cu-induced stress have not been reported. In this study, we tested two fragrant rice cultivars (Meixiangzhan and Yuxiangyouzhan) at the heading stage, with four Cu doses (CuSO 4 ·5H 2 O), i.e., 0 (CK), 20 (T1), 40 (T2), and 60 mM (T3) in a pot experiment. Our results showed that T2 treatment improved the yield of Meixiangzhan and Yuxiangyouzhan by 8.33% and 18.51%, respectively, by improving grains per panicle and the seed-setting rate. Moreover, Yuxiangyouzhan had the highest yield in T2 treatment, indicating that it had better Cu-tolerance than Meixiangzhan. Both cultivars had a similar response to Cu dose treatments. While T1 and T2 improved leaf pigment contents, antioxidant enzyme activities, and soluble protein content in plant tissues, T3 treatment instead promoted higher malondialdehyde (MDA) content accumulation and regulated antioxidant attributes. Overall, low-level Cu dosing significantly improved the fragrant rice yield via modulation of the antioxidant attributes. Therefore, this study provides supporting evidence for utilizing Cu reagent or assessing Cu toxicity in fragrant rice.

Three-dimensional structural ReS2@Cu2O/Cu heterojunction photocatalysts for visible-light-driven CO2 reduction

Liu Jiaxin,Qi Fei,Zhang Nan,Yang Jiayu,Liang Zhiyu,Tian Changqing,Zhang Wenxia,Tang Xiaosheng,Wu Daofu,Huang Qiang

Exploring novel and efficient photocatalysts to accelerate CO 2 photoreduction into useful chemicals or fuels is of great significance. In this work, we developed the three-dimensional (3D) structural heterojunction photocatalysts composed of ReS 2 and Cu 2 O by a drop-casting approach. The ReS 2 microspheres with nanosheets were deposited on the 3D structure of Cu 2 O/Cu foams. The analysis of UV–Vis absorption and PL spectra showed that the ReS 2 @Cu 2 O/Cu heterostructure delivered enhanced visible light absorption and improved charge carrier separation. The resulting ReS 2 @Cu 2 O/Cu-180 exhibited the CO yield of 14.3 µmol g −1 under the visible light irradiation. The realized S-scheme heterostructure not only promoted the separation of the photogenerated electron and hole pairs, but also enhanced the visible light absorption. Furthermore, the enriched electrons with high reducing abilities aggregated into the conduction band and diffused to the surface of Cu 2 O for favoring the CO 2 reduction and CO formation. This study is expected to provide a strategy to prepare high-performance S-scheme photocatalysts to perform efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

Cu-boosted one-pot nanoarchitectonics for synthesis of polydopamine membranes as reusable laccase mimic

Fan Gao,Zhuzhu Xiong,Yi Jia,Hong Li,Junbai Li

As a good alternative for natural enzyme, enzyme mimics with artificial functional materials have attracted considerable attention. However, it remains a great challenge to develop a facile method to design laccase mimic with high catalytic activity, long-term stability and reusability. In this report, we propose the one-pot synthesis of reusable paper filter templated Cu-doped polydopamine membranes (PF@PDA/Cu) with laccase-like activity. Compared with the natural laccase, the PF@PDA/Cu membrane exhibits enhanced catalytic activity for the chemical conversion of hydroquinone into benzoquinone . Interestingly, these membranes present good tolerance to high temperature and the catalytic activity increases with the increase of temperature. Moreover, these membranes could be stored for 7 days and recycled for 5 times with negligible loss of catalytic activity. This work provides a promising paradigm for rational design and practical applications of metal-loading PDA materials based on one-pot synthesis methodology.

Flexible Recyclable Cellulose Paper Templated Cu-Doped Polydopamine Membranes with Dual Enzyme-Like Activity

Hong Li,Zhuzhu Xiong,Yi Jia,Fan Gao,Chenlei Wang,Qi Li,Junbai Li

The development of high-efficiency enzyme mimics is of great significance in the field of biocatalysis. However, it remains challenging to design novel enzyme mimics with multiple enzyme-like activities, excellent stability, and good reusability. Herein, a facile molecular assembly strategy to construct dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) templated Cu-doped polydopamine (DAC@PDA/Cu) membrane with dual enzyme-like activities is presented. The Schiff base bonds formed between polydopamine (PDA) and DAC can not only accelerate the adhesion of PDA thin layer but also contribute to Cu-loading and high stability of DAC@PDA/Cu membrane. Importantly, the assembled DAC@PDA/Cu membrane exhibits a remarkable catalytic activity that is superior to the natural laccase along with high stability and excellent reusability. Moreover, the DAC@PDA/Cu membrane also demonstrates peroxidase-like activity, and it is successfully applied in the sensitive detection of ascorbic acid (AA). This work will provide a new paradigm methodology for rational design and practical applications of enzyme mimics based on bioinspired molecular assemblies.

Core–Shell Polydopamine/Cu Nanometer Rods Efficiently Deactivate Microbes by Mimicking Chloride-Activated Peroxidases

Lian-Jiao Zhou,Yu-Ying Wang,Shu-Lan Li,Ling Cao,Feng-Lei Jiang,Thomas Maskow,Yi Liu

Cu-modified nanoparticles have been designed to mimic peroxidase, and their potent antibacterial and anti-biofilm abilities have been widely investigated. In this study, novel core–shell polydopamine (PDA)/Cu4(OH)6SO4 crystal (PDA/Cu) nanometer rods were prepared. The PDA/Cu nanometer rods show similar kinetic behaviors to chloride-activated peroxidases, exhibit excellent photothermal properties, and are sensitive to the concentrations of pH values and the substrate (i.e., H2O2). PDA/Cu nanometer rods could adhere to the bacteria and catalyze hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to generate more reactive hydroxy radicals (•OH) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, Furthermore, PDA/Cu nanometer rods show enhanced catalytic and photothermal synergistic antibacterial activity. This work provides a simple, inexpensive, and effective strategy for antibacterial applications.

Pd-Cu nanoalloy for dual stimuli-responsive chemo-photothermal therapy against pathogenic biofilm bacteria

Zefeng Wang,Yanling Peng,Yan Zhou,Shengnan Zhang,Jianxi Tan,Huan Li,Dinggeng He,Le Deng

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising strategy for antimicrobial therapy. However, the application of PTT to treat bacterial infections remains a challenge as the high temperature required for bacterial elimination can partly damage healthy tissues. Selecting the appropriate treatment temperature is therefore a key factor for PTT. In this work, we designed a near-infrared/pH dual stimuli-responsive activated procedural antibacterial system based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), which was bottom-up synthesized and utilized to encapsulate both Pd-Cu nanoalloy (PC) and the antibiotic amoxicillin (AMO). This procedural antibacterial therapy comprises chemotherapy (CT) and PTT. The former disrupts the bacterial cell wall by releasing AMO in an acidic environment, which depends on the sensitive response of ZIF-8 to pH value change. With the progression in time, the AMO release rate decreased gradually. The latter can then significantly stimulate drug release and further complete the antibacterial effect. This impactful attack consisted of two waves that constitute the procedural therapy for bacterial infection. Accordingly, the treatment temperature required for antibacterial therapy can be significantly lowered under this mode of treatment. This antibacterial system has a significant therapeutic effect on planktonic bacteria (G + /G − ) and their biofilms and also has good biocompatibility; thus, it provides a promising strategy to develop an effective and safe treatment against bacterial infections. Statement of Significance We have developed a near infrared/pH dual stimuli-responsive activated procedural antibacterial system that combines enhanced antibiotic delivery with photothermal therapy and has highly efficient antimicrobial activity . The antibacterial effect of this therapy was based on two mechanisms of action: chemotherapy, in which the bacterial cell wall was first destroyed, followed by photothermal therapy. After exposure to irradiation with an 808 nm laser, the inhibition rates were 99.8% and 99.1% for Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa , respectively, and the clearance rates for their established biofilms were 75.3% and 74.8%, respectively. Thus, this procedural antibacterial therapy has shown great potentiality for use in the photothermal therapy of bacterial infectious diseases, including biofilm elimination.

Boosting Hydrogen Evolution through the Interface Effects of Amorphous NiMoO4–MoO2 and Crystalline Cu

Yue Yao,Enlai Hu,Zhiyu Wang,Yuanjing Cui,Guodong Qian

The rational design and synthesis of a highly efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are of great importance for the efficient generation of sustainable energy. Herein, amorphous/crystalline heterophase Ni–Mo–O/Cu (denoted as a/c Ni–Mo–O/Cu) was synthesized by a one-pot electrodeposition method. Thanks to the introduction of metallic Cu and the formation of amorphous Ni–Mo–O, the prepared electrocatalyst exhibits favorable conductivity and abundant active sites, which are favorable to the HER progress. Moreover, the interfaces consisting of Cu and Ni–Mo–O show electron transfers between these components, which might modify the absorption/desorption energy of H atoms, thus accelerating HER activity. As expected, the prepared a/c Ni–Mo–O/Cu possesses excellent HER performance, which affords an ultralow overpotential of 34.8 mV at 10 mA cm–2, comparable to that of 20 wt % Pt/C (35.0 mV), and remarkable stability under alkaline conditions.

Direct synthesis of Cu-containing Beta zeolite without template for selective oxidation of cyclohexane

Zhang Wei,Xue Haonan,Wang Min,Wu Zeying,Ding Linlin,Deng Yaoyao,Wang Wei,Wei Xuejiao,Zhang Zhenwei,Xiang Mei

Cu-containing Beta zeolites (Cu-Beta) are straightforwardly synthesized in a one-pot method without template, where the crucial step is the co-hydrolysis/condensation of silica source and copper salt at the moderate acidic condition. In the solvent-free oxidation of cyclohexane with molecular oxygen (O 2 ), the best cyclohexane conversion result (9.7%) with a KA-oil (cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol) selectivity of 94.1% is obtained over Cu-Beta(100). Structure—activity relationship analysis indicates that the isolated tetrahedral framework Cu 2+ species and chemisorption oxygen species in high concentration on the catalyst surface enhannce the catalic performance. In addition, the catalyst can be easily separated and still remain stable after recycling five times, providing new insights into catalysts design for the catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane to KA-oil.

Superhydrophilic/underwater superaerophobic self-supporting CuS/Cu foam electrode for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Ya-li Yao,Jin-mei He,Xin Yang,Lei Peng,Xue-dan Zhu,Kan-she Li,Meng-nan Qu

Hydrogen production by electrochemical overall water splitting is an economic and green approach to resolve the looming energy and environmental crisis. However, the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) generally occurs at low rate due to the delayed reaction kinetics of four-electron transfer. Herein, a kind of crater-like micro-nano structure CuS three-dimensional electrode that was supported on a Cu foam was prepared and used as an electrode anode for overall water splitting. The superhydrophilic/underwater superaerophobic structure can significantly reduce the bubble adhesion on the electrode surface and improve the OER performance. The CuS/CF electrode showed good wettability and superaerophobicity with an underwater contact angle of 153.5°. The CuS/CF (CuS/Cu foam) electrode has been proved to have excellent electrocatalytic activity for water decomposition. In 1.0 M KOH solution, the OER overpotential is 350 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and the Tafel slope is 83 mV dec −1 . In acidic medium of 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution, the overpotential of hydrogen evolution (HER) is 134 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and the Tafel slope is 114 mV dec −1 . The underwater superaerophobic electrode still has strong stability after 10 h test. This work provides a new potential electrochemical catalyzed approach to water decomposition by constructing a super-infiltration electrode.
