ABSTRACT PVDF-based nanocomposites have gained significant focus in capacitors for their excellent dielectric strength, its multi-scale structural inhomogeneity is the bottleneck for improving the energy storage performance. Here, the composite components are optimized by the matrix modification, BST (Ba 0.6 Sr 0.4 TiO 3 ) ceramic fibrillation and surface coating. A series of PVDF/polymethyl methacrylate/lysozyme@BST nanofibers with continuous gradient distribution (PF-M/ m BST nf-g) are prepared by the concentration gradient-biaxial high-speed electrospinning. The finite element simulation and experiment results indicate that the continuous gradient structure is favorable for the microstructure and inhomogeneity of the electric field distribution, significantly increasing the breakdown strength ( E b ) and the permittivity ( ε r ), as well as effectively suppressing the interfacial injected charge and leakage current. As a result, the energy storage density ( U e ) of 23.1 J/cm 3 at 600 MV/m with the charge-discharge efficiency ( η ) of 71% is achieved compared to PF-M (5.6 J/cm 3 @350 MV/m, 65%). The exciting energy storage performance based on the well-designed PF-M/ m BST nf-g provides important information for the development and application of polymer nanocomposite dielectrics.

Introducing high dielectric-constant inorganic fillers into a high-broaden-strength polymer matrix is a crucial strategy to achieve a high-performance energy storage polymer composite. However, the interfacial coupling between the inorganic fillers and polymer matrix has always been a predicament for optimal performance. Herein, a multilayer interface structure, i.e., TiO2/SiO2, SiO2/polydopamine (PDA), and PDA/PVDF, are developed to resist the applied high electric field and improve the interfacial polarization simultaneously. TiO2 nanorods (NRs) with [001]-oriented rutile polymorph are synthesized by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) assisted hydrothermal reaction, which is further decorated with a SiO2 layer and a subsequent PDA layer in order to incorporate well into the PVDF matrix using a solution casting process, finally forming the TiO2@SiO2@PDA/PVDF composite film. The optimal composite film incorporating [001]-TiO2 NRs exhibits an ultrahigh energy density (Ue) of 29.8 J/cm3 at a high Eb of 532 MV/m, sharply superior to the TiO2 counterpart-based films (e.g., TiO2 nanoparticle (NPs) based, and with or without the SiO2/PDA layer, which only gives a maximum Ue of 16 J/cm3 in TiO2@SiO2@PDA NPs/PVDF), and also the similarly inorganic-polymer systems previously reported. This work not only demonstrates an inorganic-polymer hybrid composite film with high electrostatic storage density but also highlights a multilayer interface structure route to alter interfacial microstructures and achieve superior energy storage performance.

Nowadays, the discharge of wastewater causes serious environmental pollution, affecting the living environment and the health of human beings. So the problem of wastewater treatment is imminent. In this context, the PVDF/SMA/CdS membranes had oil-water separation and dye degradation effects were prepared by using non-solvent phase transition and in-situ deposition methods. Its separation efficiency reached more than 98%, and the oil-water removal rate was at more than 90% after 5 times of recycling. Under visible light irradiation, it could completely degrade methylene blue solution (MB, 10 mg·L -1 , pH=3) within 20 min, cochineal solution (Ponceau 4R) within 12 min, and chromium blue-black R (EBR) solution within 6 min, and the degradation rate was at more than 95% after 5 cycles. Therefore, the PVDF/SMA/CdS membrane can effectively treat wastewater. This study opens up a promising avenue for wastewater treatment technology with high potential for application.

With the rapid development of high-speed railway, real-time monitoring of operation safety becomes more and more crucial. However, power supply for microsensors in railway monitoring systems is still demanding and challenging. Stable energy to onboard sensing devices is essential to ensure the safe operation of rail transit systems. Herein, a hybrid piezoelectric–triboelectric nanogenerator (HPTG) is proposed to harvest the vibration energy on the bogie, which is also used as the self-powered sensing for continuous structural health monitoring (SHM) of train bogie. HPTG is designed and fabricated with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/zinc oxide (ZnO) composite and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film. The experiment results demonstrate that incorporating ZnO simultaneously enhances piezoelectric and triboelectric outputs while improving the overall output performance of the device, fully realizing the synergistic effect of piezoelectric effect and triboelectric effect. Under the condition of external load, the maximum power of the hybrid output is 3.256 μW with excellent working stability. Through the integration of rectifier circuit and energy storage module, the microthermohygrometer is successfully driven. In addition, the feasibility of vibration energy harvesting of HPTG in the actual operating environment is further verified on the small-scale wheel rolling test bench, which provides a solution for the power supply problem of microelectronic equipment for train bogie monitoring, and can effectively help to develop the self-powered monitoring system of rail transit.

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) face critical challenges, including low ionic conductivity, unstable electrode–electrolyte interfaces, and lithium dendrite growth issues. To address these issues, we designed a PVDF-based composite electrolyte embedded with NiSe nanosheets (PVDF-NS). The two-dimensional NiSe facilitated the in situ formation of Li2Se at the interface, promoting dendrite suppression by enhancing Li+ transport (room-temperature ionic conductivity: 5.53 × 10–4 S·cm–1; transference number: 0.449) and constructing a stable SEI layer. Notably, PVDF-NS supported Li||Li symmetric cells demonstrated excellent stability for over 2000 h at 0.2 mA·cm–2. When paired with NCM811 cathodes, full cells demonstrated 86.3% capacity retention over 300 cycles at 2 C. Additionally, the electrolyte exhibited high oxidative stability (4.83 V vs Li+/Li) and retained a capacity of 65.6 mAh·g–1 at 5 C, underscoring its practical applicability. This interfacial engineering approach presents a scalable and effective route for developing durable, high-performance solid electrolytes for next-generation SSLMBs.

Membrane distillation (MD) represents a promising advance in wastewater purification, contributing to the mitigation of water scarcity. Hydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) microporous membrane is susceptible to wetting by low surface tension substances, leading to fouling. To address this, PVDF membrane was superhydrophobically modified using modified ZIF-8 to obtain two composite membranes, AZ/PVDF and Z@C/PVDF. AZ/PVDF and Z@C/PVDF composite membranes were prepared by coating more dispersible APTES-ZIF-8 and ZIF-8@MWCNT, respectively, onto the surface of PVDF membrane. The hydrophobicity of the composite membranes was regulated by silane types, fluorination methods, and fluorination time, resulting in reduced surface roughness and increased surface energy. The contact angles of AZ/PVDF and Z@C/PVDF were 154.2 ± 3.4° and 156.8 ± 4.2°, respectively. Both AZ/PVDF and Z@C/PVDF membranes demonstrated outstanding mechanical, thermal, and chemical stability. AZ/PVDF and Z@C/PVDF membranes outperformed PVDF membrane, extending operation times by 2 h and 3 h, respectively, without obvious NaCl crystals. Furthermore, Z@C/PVDF membrane exhibited superior resistance to wetting by SDS than AZ/PVDF and PVDF membranes, treating pickle brine via the direct contact MD (DCMD) process with a recovery rate of 30.2 % within 10 h. Overall, this research offers a promising approach to fabricating superhydrophobic composite membranes for high-salt brine treatment via DCMD.

The indiscriminate of tetracycline (TC) has led to significant environmental and health concerns, particularly the proliferation of antibiotic resistance. This study presents a visible-light photocatalytic composite membrane with a Z-scheme heterojunction to improve TC removal efficiency and address the challenge of catalyst powder recovery in practical applications. Firstly, the PI/NH 2 -UiO-66 (PNs) composite photocatalyst was synthesized via a one-step thermal solvent method. Subsequently, the PVDF/MXene/PI/NH 2 -UiO-66 (PMPNs) composite fiber membrane was successfully fabricated by stably loading the PNs and MXene onto PVDF fiber membranes through electrospinning. Under visible light irradiation, the removal efficiency of TC by the PMPN1.5 composite fiber membrane could reach 86.07% through the combined effects of filtration, adsorption, and photocatalysis. Even after three cycles, the recovery rate of the PMPN1.5 membrane could still reach 86.16%. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was due to the Z-scheme heterojunction between PI and NH 2 -UiO-66. This heterojunction structure enhanced the redox capability of the photocatalyst. Additionally, the incorporation of MXene facilitated effectively charged carrier transfer at the heterojunction interface, prolonging the electron-hole separation time and further improving the photocatalytic capability. This study successfully integrates photocatalytic technology with membrane separation to develop a visible light-responsive composite fiber membrane with considerable potential for treating antibiotic-contaminated wastewater. The developed membrane not only mitigates fouling but is also easily recyclable, minimizing the risk of secondary pollution.

The membrane exhibited exceptional hydrophilicity, underwater oil repellency, self-cleaning properties, and a porous fiber structure. Its pure water flux reached 7894.50 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , with an average fiber diameter of 130 nm and an underwater oil contact angle exceeding 140°. The hydration layer enabled the membrane to effectively separate oil–water mixtures and emulsions composed of engine oil, carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ), toluene (C 7 H 8 ), soybean oil, cyclohexane (C 6 H 12 ), and other oil agents from water, achieving an efficiency greater than 99 %. Furthermore, the PVDF/PVP/SiO 2 /CS nanofiber membrane successfully captured dyes and heavy metal ions through hydration, hydrogen bonding (HB), electrostatic interactions (ESI), π-π interactions, and chelation mechanisms. The retention efficiencies of the membrane for Rhodamine B (RB), chromium ions (Cr 6+ ), methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), and lead ions (Pb 2+ ) were 71.4 %, 74.0 %, 83.3 %, 85.6 %, 88.5 %, and 95.1 %, respectively. After filtration, the membrane flux values were 6042.64, 6653.40, 5689.85, 5865.40, 5732.68, and 6652.70 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , with a maximum membrane flux loss of no more than 25 %. The membrane demonstrated retention efficiencies of 72.4 %, 75.3 %, 79.4 %, 81.2 %, 84.3 %, and 92.3 % for the removal of RB, Cr 6+ , MO, MB, MG, and Pb 2+ from wastewater containing dual pollutants of oil–water emulsions with heavy metal ions and dyes. The separation efficiency for oil–water emulsions in the dual-pollutant wastewater exceeded 99 %.

Graphical ZIF-8 was synthesized through an in-situ growth method within a PVDF membrane matrix. The PVDF/ZIF-8 composite membrane was subsequently prepared via the phase inversion method using immersion precipitation. The ZIF-8 particles were uniformly distributed in the PVDF/ZIF-8 composite membrane. The widespread use of organic dyes in industrial processes has led to increasing environmental pollution due to the discharge of dye-contaminated wastewater, necessitating more efficient dye removal methods. In this study, a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/ZIF-8 composite membrane was fabricated via a phase inversion method using immersion precipitation, with ZIF-8 synthesized via in-situ growth within the membrane matrix. The composite membranes were thoroughly characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The ZIF-8 particles were uniformly distributed in the PVDF/ZIF-8 composite membrane. The adsorption performance of the PVDF/ZIF-8 composite membrane was evaluated for methyl green (MG) removal. At 313 K with an adsorbent dose of 10 mg, the membrane exhibited an adsorption capacity of 172.30 mg g⁻¹ and a removal ratio of 87.21%, demonstrating that the incorporation of ZIF-8 significantly enhanced adsorption performance. Adsorption isotherm studies revealed that the process followed the Freundlich model, while kinetic analysis indicated a pseudo-second-order mechanism. Additionally, thermodynamic investigations suggested that the adsorption was endothermic and spontaneous. The major driving force for adsorption was identified as electrostatic interactions between the dye and the membrane. These findings highlight the potential of PVDF/ZIF-8 composite membranes for effective dye removal from wastewater.

The development of solar-driven interface evaporation (SDIE) technology is considered as one of the highly promising approaches for purifying seawater and wastewater treatment. However, simultaneously achieving superb evaporation rates, excellent salt resistance and protection against biofouling, and being able to operate in various water resources is still remains a significant challenge. In this work, a composite PVDF Janus membrane with schottky junction (PC-SP-MCN) was fabricated by using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the basement membrane, the poly(ionic liquid)s grafted SiO 2 (SiO 2 -PILs) as the hydrophilic agent, calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) as pore-forming agents, and MXene/g-C 3 N 4 was employed as the photocatalyst. Under the solar irradiance of 1 kW m −2 , the PC-SP-MCN can achieve an evaporation rate of 1.51 kg m −2 h −1 , resulting in an impressive evaporation efficiency of 91 %. When tested in the NaCl solution with a concentration of 20 wt%, the evaporation rate and efficiency of PC-SP-MCN was calculated to be 1.39 kg m −2 h −1 and 83 %, respectively. Furthermore, the PC-SP-MCN also exhibited satisfied abilities in photocatalytic degradation and antibacterial properties. It can degrade methyl orange (MO), rhodamine B (RhB), and methylene blue (MB) in simulated dye wastewater effectively, while also display significant inhibitory effects on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . The PC-SP-MCN that has been prepared exhibits ample porosity, efficient pathways for water molecule transport, outstanding ability to absorb sunlight, and minimal conductivity of heat. And it also exhibited an efficient SDIE performance, superb photodegradation, and antimicrobial properties. This study gives a new perspective to integrate different properties into the SDIE system and expand its application, especially in desalination and wastewater treatment.

As dielectric film as the core device of capacitors, how to enhance its dielectric and energy storage performance is crucial for the application of film capacitors. To this end, we propose a solvothermal synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF) material UiO-66-NH 2 to explore the potential application of MOF materials in the field of dielectric energy storage. BaTiO 3 nanoparticles and MOF fillers were selected to be introduced into the PVDF/PI matrix, and nanocomposite films were prepared by the spin-coating process, which showed a strong bonding at the micro-interface of the film and a uniform macroscopic thickness without obvious aggregation. The high porosity of UiO-66-NH 2 and the high dielectric constant of BaTiO 3 , as well as the high breakdown strength E b of the polymer matrix are utilised to synergistically promote the energy density and maintain good charge/discharge stability. Notably, the BU-X/PVDF/PI nanocomposite films demonstrated good energy storage performance and stable charge/discharge efficiency η. The results show that the BU-0.5/PVDF/PI nanocomposite film has an E b of 2190 kV/cm, an energy storage density of 3.73 J/cm 3 , and stable η ranging from 60 % to 94 %, which are superior to the pure BaTiO 3 /PVDF/PI nanocomposite film in terms of overall performance. In addition, the dielectric loss of the BU-0.5/PVDF/PI nanocomposite film is as low as 0.022. These findings indicate the good prospects for the development of MOF materials in the field of energy storage.

This study aimed to develop an effective CO2/N2 selective separation membrane for the capture of CO2 from air or flue gas. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was chosen as the organic substrate for the preparation of mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs). To enhance the CO2 mass transfer rate, an ionic liquid (IL) with high CO2 solubility was introduced through direct material blending, while a leaf-like zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L) was functionalized with silane coupling agents as the inorganic filler. Subsequently, the prepared PVDF-IL@ZIF MMMs were tested for the CO2 separation performance and mechanical properties. The results revealed that IL loading could significantly enhance the separation performance of MMMs for CO2/N2 separation, and the AZL-incorporated IL loading MMM (PPAZL) exhibited the optimal gas separation performance, with 24.5% CO2/N2 selectivity at 2 bar transmembrane pressure. Notably, AZL also demonstrated superior interfacial compatibility with PVDF compared to both ZIF-8 and pristine ZIF-L, which facilitated the maximization of IL loading in the MMM, achieving more than 10% higher IL capacity than ZIF-8-filled counterparts while stabilizing IL immobilization within the membrane matrix.
