Photothermal hydrogenation of CO 2 into high value chemicals is a promising approach for addressing the energy crisis and mitigating CO 2 emissions. However, synergistic tailoring of light absorption and active sites at the atomic level to enhance catalyst performance still remains a challenge. Herein, Ru single atoms doping empowers CeO 2 with two advantageous modifications, inducing abundant of oxygen vacancies and full spectrum (200–2500 nm) responsiveness. Experimental and theoretical calculations verify that the Ru doped CeO 2 (Ru/CeO 2 ) catalyst featuring Ru single atoms and oxygen vacancy active sites, which enables simultaneous H 2 and CO 2 activation, and also reduce the energy barrier in the rate-limiting step of C-O bond cleaving. Meanwhile, the introduction of oxygen defect and Ru doping levels endows the full-spectral light absorption of CeO 2 , thus achieving high-efficiency light-to-thermal conversion. As a result, the optimal Ru/CeO 2 catalyst shows an unprecedented CH 4 yield rate of 123 mmol⋅g −1 ⋅h −1 with near-unity selectivity (˃99%) under light illumination without any external heat source, as well as a good catalytic stability.

Catalytic subcritical water oxidation (CSWO) is a promising technology for treating refractory organic pollutants, yet its application to nitrogen-containing wastewater is limited by inefficient nitrogen conversion and the accumulation of nitrogenous intermediates. Herein, predominantly Ru/TiO 2 single-atom catalysts with tunable oxygen vacancy concentrations were developed for nitrobenzene degradation. The optimized 800-Ru/TiO 2 catalyst achieved mineralization and total nitrogen (TN) removal rates of 87.8% and 85.2%, respectively. A pronounced decoupling between organic matter mineralization and nitrogen conversion was observed, with nitrogen transformation identified as the rate-limiting step. Reaction condition analysis reveals that nitrogen transformation is governed by a competition between selective N 2 formation and over-oxidation to NO 3 − , and the coupling of NH 4 + and NO 2 − is identified as the key pathway for N 2 generation, whereas excessive oxidation promotes nitrate accumulation. The introduction of atomically dispersed Ru significantly enhances nitrogen conversion and shifts the reaction pathway toward selective N 2 formation. Structural characterization and electronic analyses demonstrate that oxygen-vacancy-enriched TiO 2 stabilizes Ru single atoms and induces strong metal-support interaction (SMSI), which is associated with enhances oxidant activation and promotes nitrogen redox coupling. The catalyst exhibits good stability over 92% performance retention after five cycles. This work provides insights into the relationship between catalyst structure, electronic properties, and nitrogen transformation, and offers a strategy for achieving efficient and selective nitrogen removal in CSWO systems.

The catalytic reductive amination of biomass-derived carbonyl compounds into value-added primary amines has attracted significant attention in renewable biomass upgrading. Herein, highly dispersed Ru clusters embedded nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres (Ru@NHCS) catalysts were constructed, which achieved a 100% furfurylamine (FUA) yield, and exhibited the superior initial reaction rate of 3745.7 mmol gRu-1 h-1 and turnover frequency of 378.58 h-1 in the reductive amination of biomass-derived furfural. Systematic structure characterization indicated that the presence of abundant N species promoted the uniform dispersion of Ru clusters and induced the electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) between Ru and NHCS support, thus leading to the formation of bifunctional Ru0 and Ruδ+ active sites. Structure-activity relationship study demonstrated that the synergistic catalysis of Ru0 and Ruδ+ active sites effectively promoted the adsorption and activation of H2 and NH3 molecules, and accelerated the hydrogenation of imine and the aminolysis of Schiff base intermediates, thereby achieving the highly selective synthesis of FUA under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the Ru@NHCS catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic stability in the five consecutive cycles, and showed broad substrate applicability for sustainable primary amine synthesis. This work not only unveils rational design strategies for developing efficient, stable metal catalysts to achieve highly selective synthesis of value-added primary amines but also provides essential theoretical guidance for efficient biomass conversion.

The development of highly active and CO-tolerant hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) electrocatalysts is of great significance for alkaline exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Here, the designed atomically Ni anchored Ru/RuO 2 heterostructure nanosheets (Ni SA -Ru@RuO 2 NSs/C) exhibit enhanced activity and stability for HOR in alkaline media. The optimized electrocatalyst delivers a high CO-tolerant durability with 92.3% retention in the 1000 ppm CO concentration after 5000 s test. Moreover, the anode catalyst Ni SA -Ru@RuO 2 NSs/C assembled AEMFCs output a peak power density (PPD) and specific PPD of 1.76 W cm −2 and 17.6 W mg PGM −1 under the H 2 /O 2 condition and performed a long-term stability with negligible decay for 100 h at 0.5 A cm −2 for the AEMFCs. The relative mechanism studies reveal that the Ru/RuO 2 heterostructure nanosheet and dispersed Ni single atoms have optimized the *H and *OH adsorption simultaneously and weaken the *CO adsorption. Our work may offer a significant guideline on the rational design of high-performance HOR electrocatalyst for energy-related applications.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are considered the most efficient technology for the direct conversion of hydrocarbons to electrical energy. Although the commonly used Ni/YSZ cermet materials in SOFCs show excellent electrocatalytic properties in H 2 fuel, they suffer from carbon deposition problem when hydrocarbon fuels are used. In this work, we study the use of Ni 0 · 05 Ru 0.05 -Mo 2 C with a porous nanorod-shaped morphology as an internal reforming catalyst layer for methane-fueled SOFCs to solve the degradation of cell performance due to carbon deposition. The electrochemical performance and coking tolerance of two types of cells with and without the catalyst layer were systematically studied using methane and hydrogen as fuels. With the catalyst layer, the single cell using methane as fuel exhibits an improvement in peak power density by 24%, increasing from 297 to 367 mW cm −2 and there was no diffusion barrier for fuel gases within the cell. Furthermore, the cell can stably run for 100 h in methane at 700 °C. The improvement of electrochemical performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of Ni and Ru sites anchored on the porous Mo 2 C nanorods catalyst based on strong metal-support interactions, promoting the effective catalytic conversion of CH 4 to CO and H 2 . This study demonstrates that the integration of a catalyst layer for internal reforming is an effective strategy for the direct use of methane in SOFCs.

A sensitive dual-signal electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor was proposed based on Ru(bpy)32+@HKUST-1/TPA and Ce2Sn2O7/K2S2O8 probes for detecting the NT-proBNP biomarker of heart failure. HKUST-1 with a high specific surface area facilitates the loading of more Ru(bpy)32+, effectively improving the anodic signal intensity, while the emerging Ce2Sn2O7 emitter displays a potential-matching cathodic emission with moderate intensity. Two ECL probes were characterized with field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, XPS, FT-IR spectroscopy and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. This dual-signal immunosensor has a wide linear range (5 × 10−4–1 × 104 ng mL−1) and a low quantitative detection limit, simultaneously showing high sensitivity, stability and reproducibility, as well as the detection capability of actual serum samples. This dual signal-calibrated immunoassay platform not only reduces the false positive rate of detection results but also provides a promising method for the early diagnosis of heart failure.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF 165 ) is a signal protein that plays a central role in the regulation of angiogenesis and can stimulate angiogenesis. The development of highly sensitive and selective detection method for VEGF 165 is very important for disease diagnosis and follow-up treatment monitoring. In this study, an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor for VEGF 165 has been developed based on quench of H 2 O 2 toward Ru(bpy) 3 2+ /TPrA ECL system and RecJ f exonuclease induced target recovery and hybridization chain reaction (HCR) as amplification strategy. The presence of VEGF 165 makes a large number of glucose oxidase (GOD) fixed on the electrode surface through the double signal amplification strategies. The present of GOD cause the production of a large amount of H 2 O 2 near the electrode surface under excess amount of glucose, resulting in the inhibition of the ECL signal of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ /Au nanoparticles (Ru(bpy) 3 2+ /AuNPs) film fixed on the electrode surface. The ECL response of the designed biosensor has a good linear relationship with the logarithm of the concentration of VEGF 165 in the range of 0.5 pg/mL to 500 ng/mL with a detection limit of 0.2 fg/mL. The VEGF 165 in serum samples has been detected by the proposed aptasensor with satisfactory results.

Direct hydrogenation of CO2 (or HCO3–) into chemicals using organic waste biomass as a hydrogen donor is a promising carbon-negative strategy to alleviate the global warming caused by excessive CO2 emission. However, the reported conversion efficiencies are quite limited. In this work, a facile Ru/ZrO2 catalyst was developed to catalyze the hydrogenation of HCO3– into formate by using biodiesel-waste glycerol as the reductant. It was found that ruthenium can significantly promote the dehydrogenation of glycerol to provide in situ hydrogen for HCO3– hydrogenation according to the in situ Fourier transform infrared spectrometer analysis. Moreover, hydrogen spillover between ruthenium and ZrO2 support was also formed. Consequently, efficient hydrogen transfer could be constructed in the presence of Ru/ZrO2, achieving desirable in situ hydrogenation of HCO3– into formate eventually. The highest yield of formate up to 25.1% was obtained over Ru/ZrO2, while the formate yield was only 4.2% in the case without catalysts.

Promoting hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is currently vital to practicing the sustainable development of hydrogen economy . As an emerging candidate, pyrite-structured ruthenium disulfide (RuS 2 ) is a promising electrocatalyst for alkaline HER. Nevertheless, much less efforts have been devoted to RuS 2 , thus whose intrinsic properties still remain to be improved via promoting the water dissociation and hydrogen adsorption processes . Herein, we report the facile synthesis of Cu-doped RuS 2 hollow polyhedrons coupled with metallic Ru from bimetallic MOF of RuCu-BTC to boost alkaline hydrogen evolution. In which, in-situ Cu doping integrated with simultaneous heterostructure engineering with metallic Ru are achieved for RuS 2 . Benefitting from modified electronic structure, heterogeneous interfaces and 3D hollow polyhedral morphology, the Cu-doped RuS 2 /Ru heterostructure exhibits admirable electrocatalytic activity with small overpotential of 169 mV at a high current density of 200 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, superior to that of commercial Pt/C. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the incorporation of Cu heteroatoms can not only decrease the energy barrier for water dissociation of RuS 2 but also optimize its hydrogen adsorption. Simultaneously, the construction of heterointerfaces between RuS 2 and metallic Ru demonstrates further improved conductivity, increased active sites and enhanced specific activity. This work discloses an innovative strategy for the simultaneous implementation of heteroatom doping and heterostructure engineering on RuS 2 to collaboratively promote the HER electrocatalytic performance.

To improve the sensitivity for electro-chemiluminescent (ECL) detection of chloramphenicol (CAP), a common broad-spectrum antibiotic, boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) were prepared with excellent photoelectric property and low toxicity. After its structure and electrochemical property were investigated in detail, it was noted that the ECL signal of Ru(Phen)32+ could be strengthened by the proposed BNQDs, which was further activated by ten's times in the presence of CAP. Under the optimized conditions, there was an excellent linear relationship between ΔECL and lgcCAP in a wide linear range from 1.0 × 10−10 to 1.0 × 10−6 mol l−1 CAP. The detection limit was super-low to be 3.3 × 10−11 mol l−1 (S/N = 3). When applied for CAP detection in real pharmaceutical and food samples, the recoveries were between 97.8% and 105.7% with R.S.D. less than 3.3%. A possible CAP-activated ECL mechanism of BNQDs-Ru(phen)32+ was also proposed. This work will offer a great potential for efficient monitoring of CAP pollution and clinical diagnosing of CAP-related diseases in future.

Low temperature and highly selective hydrogenation of the lignin-derived aromatics to obtain high-value chemicals and clean liquid fuels is a significant step for lignin valorization in the chemical industry. Developing efficient catalysts with high activity and selectivity for hydrogenation of lignin-derived aromatic rings at low temperature remains a big challenge. Herein, a well-dispersed Ru-Fe bimetallic nanoparticle catalyst supported on porous nitrogen-doped carbon was developed through a facile impregnation method. It showed excellent catalytic activity for hydrogenation of lignin-derived aromatics, such as diaryl ethers, phenolic monomers and arenes to corresponding alicyclic compounds with high selectivity, under surprisingly mild conditions (≤50 °C, ≤2 h and 1 MPa H 2 ). Hydrogenation of aromatic rings took precedence over the cleavage of C-O bond for the lignin-derived aromatics. The resulting alicyclic compounds are key raw materials for synthesizing polymer, pharmaceutical intermediates and resins, and clean liquid fuels. The strong interactions between metal and support improved the anti-oxidation and anti-sintering ability of the catalyst, and significantly improve the hydrogenation performance. Additionally, the phenols in the lignin oil were effectively converted into cyclohexanol and its derivatives at 90 °C over the Ru-Fe bimetallic catalyst , with selectivity up to 53.3% in the hydrogenated lignin oil. The development of this catalyst for selective hydrogenation of lignin-derived aromatics at low temperature provides a green, low carbon footprint and sustainable approach for the value-added utilization of lignin and its derivatives.

Controlling metal-support interaction (MSI) is considered as an effective strategy to optimize the electronic structure of catalysts and thus promote their catalytic performance. Here, with the strong MSI by both metal core and nitrogen-doped carbon shell, the synthesized Ru supported on N-doped graphene-encapsulated Ni nanoparticles (Ni@NC/Ru) show excellent performance towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). It exhibits a very low HER potential of 28 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and high durability that the potential only increases approximately 7 mV after 10,000 cyclic voltammetry cycles. The high HER performance is attributed to the strong MSI from the tuning effect of Ni metal core and N-dope graphene shell, which optimizes the hydrogen binding energy of the catalysts. This study may shed light on the rational design of superior HER catalysts.
