Highly efficient MXene/Nano-Cu smoke suppressant towards reducing fire hazards of thermoplastic polyurethane

Yongqian Shi,Chuan Liu,Libi Fu,Yuezhan Feng,Yuancai Lv,Zixiao Wang,Minghua Liu,Zhixin Chen

A large number of toxic fumes evolved from polymeric materials are a great threat to human evacuation. The aim of this work is to dramatically reduce the generation of smoke and toxic gaseous products upon polymers burning. A highly efficient titanium carbide/nano-copper (Ti 3 C 2 T x /Nano-Cu) hybrid smoke suppressant was synthesized by interficial adhesion and then incorporated into thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to fabricate TPU nanocomposites. The Ti 3 C 2 T x /Nano-Cu hybrid was homogeneously dispersed in the TPU matrix and showed a strong interfacial interaction with the TPU host. Introducing the Ti 3 C 2 T x /Nano-Cu hybrid into TPU led to enhanced high-temperature stability. Furthermore, the smoke production rate, CO production rate and total CO yield of the TPU nanocomposite containing 2 wt% Ti 3 C 2 T x /Nano-Cu hybrid decreased by 66.7%, 51.8% and 52.9%, respectively, compared with those of pure TPU. The reduced fire hazards of the TPU were due to the physical barrier, the catalytic charring and the chemical conversion of Ti 3 C 2 T x /Nano-Cu hybrid.

Fabrication of Superhydrophobic SA-CeO2@Cu Mesh and Its Application in Oil–Water Separation

Ting Liang,Biao Wang,Zhenzhong Fan,Qingwang Liu

CeO2 was synthesized by the co-precipitation method on the Cu mesh substrate and modified the surface of CeO2@Cu mesh by stearic acid (SA). The superhydrophobic behavior was ascribed to the combination of hierarchical micro–nanostructure of CeO2 and the hydrophobic alkyl groups from SA. The SA-CeO2@Cu mesh had antiacid and base stability and excellent durability as well as high separation efficiency. The separation efficiency can be up to 98.0% after separating 30 times.

Determination of peracetic acid by an Ag nanoparticle decorated Cu-organic framework modified electrode

Wenzhi Zhang,Tian Jiang,Xiuxiu Sun,Ani Zhou,Maoguo Li

Peracetic acid (PAA) is commonly used as the strong oxidant in many areas. However, high concentration of PAA can be harmful to health of people. The quantitative determination of PAA is of great significance. Here, a metal–organic framework (MOF) is introduced into the electrochemical sensor for PAA detection. The influence of common transition metal centers on the performance of electrochemical detection of PAA was investigated and the results showed the Cu-1,3,5-trimesic acid (Cu-BTC) was the best original MOF. Ag nanoparticles were decorated in the Cu-BTC to further improve the electrocatalytical activity. The concentration of the added Ag salt and the quality of the reducing agent tannic acid (TA) had a great impact on the performance. The final sample optimized for the synthesis conditions was named as Ag NPs/Cu-BTC. The electrochemical sensor based on Ag NPs/Cu-BTC/GCE was fabricated for sensing PAA with a wide linear range (0.1–5000 μM), low detection limit (0.046 μM, S/N = 3) and high sensitivity (1013.4 μA mM −1 cm −2 ). The water stability of Ag NPs/Cu-BTC and the anti-interference ability of the sensor were good. The electrochemical sensor could be applied in detecting the concentration of PAA in the commercially available peracetic acid, suggesting the practical application value.

Unveiling the water-resistant mechanism of Cu(I)-O-Co interfaces for catalytic oxidation

Shuaiqi Zhao,Peng Wu,Jiajin Lin,Yifei Li,Anqi Li,Xiaojing Jin,Yu Chen,Bote Zhao,Yun Zhao,Guangxu Chen,Yongcai Qiu,Daiqi Ye,Shihe Yang

The development of low-temperature and water-resistant heterogeneous catalysts without noble metals is vital in the effective treatment of atmospheric pollutants in practical application. Herein, we report that Cu(I)-O-Co interfaces of ultrafine CuO x on Co 3 O 4 prepared by co-precipitation exhibit promising low-temperature activity and good water resistance. Experiment results together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations not only verify that Cu + species are stabilized over Cu(I)-O-Co interfaces because of the strong interaction between Cu 2 O 1 and Co 3 O 4 , but also demonstrate that the Cu(I)-O-Co interface facilitates oxygen species activation for promoting catalytic oxidation and reduces the accumulation of hydroxyl and bicarbonate species on the surface of CuO x /Co 3 O 4 . DFT calculations also reveal that the CO oxidation rate-limiting step via the dissociation pathway under dry conditions is the Co-OO-Cu species dissociation while the CO coupling with the adsorbed O 2 becomes the rate determining step for CO oxidation through the direct pathway over Cu(I)-O-Co interface under humid conditions. Further, the CuO x /Co 3 O 4 catalyst also exhibits superior and stable catalytic activity for toluene oxidation, comparable with partial supported noble metal catalysts (T 90  = 190 °C). The present work gives a useful strategy for the rational design of low-temperature and water-resistant non-precious-based catalysts to be applicable in CO and toluene removal in practical applications.

Self-supported hierarchical P,Cu-codoped cobalt selenide nanoarrays for enhanced overall water splitting

Yong Wang,Shouzhu Li,Dafeng Zhang,Fang Tan,Lei Li,Guangzhi Hu

Highly efficient electrocatalysts with low cost for electrochemical water splitting is important for the intermediate energy conversion. In the present work, P and Cu dual-doped cobalt selenide nanoarrays with hierarchical structure were fabricated via a facile hydrothermal method, involving in-situ growth on a self-supported conductive Ni foam substrate (P,Cu-Co 0.85 Se/NF). The overall water splitting (OWS) performance of the catalysts was systematically studied in alkaline solution. Compared to single-ion-doped or pure Co 0.85 Se, dual incorporation of the anion and cation can contort the lattice and induce powerful electronic interactions, thereby exposing abundant catalytic sites and optimizing the adsorption energy of the reaction intermediates. Benefiting from the merits of P, the Cu-co-doped Co 0.85 Se/NF electrode exhibited outstanding catalytic activity towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), generating a 10 mA cm −2 current density at the overpotential of 96.8 mV in 1 M KOH, and the overpotential is 300 mV towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with the current density of 100 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, when applied it to fabricate OWS cell, the cell voltage is as low as 1.57 V at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . This present work broaden the potential application of the electrocatalytic performance of transition metal dichalcogenides .

MOF-derived electrochemical catalyst Cu–N/C for the enhancement of amperometric oxygen detection

Wenyan Yin,Milin Zhang,Jingyuan Liu,Khaled Tawfik Alali,Jing Yu,Jiahui Zhu,Peili Liu,Rumin Li,Jun Wang

Electrochemical sensors using ionic liquids as electrolytes for oxygen detection are now getting more and more attention. Recently, an ionic liquid combined with an electrochemically active catalyst system has become popular for boosting the sensing performance of oxygen sensors. In this work, the imidazolyl-based ionic liquid 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazole bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)imide [Bmmim][TFSI] is first prepared by a facile two-step method. Subsequently, a transition metal and N-codoped porous carbon oxygen reduction electrochemical catalyst Cu–N/C is synthesized by calcining the Cu-doped ZIF-8 precursor and then blending it in different ratios with the ionic liquid [Bmmim][TFSI] as composite electrolytes for oxygen detection. The composite electrolyte Cu–N/C/[Bmmim][TFSI] exhibits increased responses in cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) relative to that of the pure ionic liquid. Furthermore, the CV and CA data show that 6% Cu–N/C/[Bmmim][TFSI] has the optimum oxygen sensing response with an enhanced reduction peak current, a sensitivity of 0.1678 μA/[% O2] and a good linear fitting coefficient of 0.9991. In conclusion, the results confirm the success of using Cu–N/C as an electrochemical catalyst composed of the Cu–N/C/[Bmmim][TFSI] electrolyte for improving the responsivity, stability and sensitivity towards a wide range of oxygen concentrations.

Cu-TCPP nanosheets blended polysulfone ultrafiltration membranes with enhanced antifouling and photo-tunable porosity

Shabab Hussain,Xinyi Wan,Zhuoyi Li,Xinsheng Peng

The major obstacle in membrane filtration technology is the membrane fouling, which not only decreases the membrane efficiency, but also enhances its operational cost. In order to fabricate a membrane with antifouling characteristics, potential nanofillers have been added to the engineering polymer(s) to make a composite to improve the membrane efficiency. Herein, we incorporate porphyrin-based ultrathin, highly ordered porous photothermal responsive copper tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (Cu-TCPP) nanosheets as a novel nanofillers into the polysulfone (PSf) matrix. High loading (6 wt%) and well dispersed Cu-TCPP nanosheets incorporated polysulfone nanocomposite (Cu-TCPP/PSf) ultrafiltration membranes are prepared via non-solvent induced phase inversion. The Cu-TCPP/PSf composite membranes demonstrate pronounced antifouling and antibiofouling potential along good separation performance. The nanocomposite membranes demonstrate photo-induced pore tuning due to the local heating of photothermal Cu-TCPP nanosheets by visible light, which further improves the membrane separation efficiency. The Cu-TCPP/PSf composite membrane with 6 wt% Cu-TCPP nanosheets enhances the pure water permeance from 23.42 to 260.61 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , with improved antifouling potential, precise permeance recovery ratio of 99.13% after three cycles, and good separation performance for 100 and 200 nm particles. Considering relatively moderate cost, facile processing, tunable porosity, durable and good mechanical strength along restrained swelling, the Cu-TCPP/PSf membranes are considered as potential candidate as antifouling/antibiofouling ultrafiltration membranes for water purification.

Symmetry-Broken Au–Cu Heterostructures and their Tandem Catalysis Process in Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Henglei Jia,Yuanyuan Yang,Tsz Him Chow,Han Zhang,Xiyue Liu,Jianfang Wang,Chun-yang Zhang

Symmetry-breaking synthesis of colloidal nanocrystals with desired structures and properties has aroused widespread interest in various fields, but the lack of robust synthetic protocols and the complex growth kinetics limit their practical applications. Herein, a general strategy is developed to synthesize the Au–Cu Janus nanocrystals (JNCs) through the site-selective growth of Cu nanodomains on Au nanocrystals, which is directed by the substantial lattice mismatch between them, with the assistance of judicious manipulation of the growth kinetics. This strategy can work on Au nanocrystals with different architectures for the achievement of diverse asymmetric Au–Cu hybrid nanostructures. Of particular note, the obtained Au nanobipyramids (Au NBPs)-based JNCs facilitate the conversion of CO 2 to C 2 hydrocarbon production during electrocatalysis, with the Faradaic efficiency and maximum partial current density being 4.1-fold and 6.4-fold higher than those of their monometallic Cu counterparts, respectively. The excellent electrocatalytic performances benefit from the special design of the Au–Cu Janus architectures and their tandem catalysis mechanism as well as the high-index facets on Au nanocrystals. This research provides a new approach to synthesize various hybrid Janus nanostructures, facilitating the study of structure-function relationship in the catalytic process and the rational design of efficient heterogeneous electrocatalysts.

Uniform titanium nitride decorated Cu foams by electrophoretic deposition for stable lithium metal anodes

Yuan Wang,Wenqi Zhang,Yuyang Qi,Shaofu Wang,Pei Liu,Xiaoyun Wei,Yanhua Yu,Weiwei Sun,Xing-Zhong Zhao,Yumin Liu

Metallic Li, with ultrahigh theoretical capacity (3860 mA h g −1 ) and the lowest electrochemical potential (−3.04 V vs. the standard hydrogen electrode), is perfectly meet the needs of high energy density lithium batteries . However, the direct use of metallic lithium as anode would cause serious dendrite and huge volume expansion, which will bring safety hazards and restrict the practical commercialization of Li metal anodes . Herein, a facile electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method was employed for the first time to fabricate uniform TiN modified commercial Cu foam (TiN@Cu foam) as the lithiophilic 3D conductive skeleton. The lithiophilic TiN acts as the well-distributed seeds to promote the uniform lithium deposition, attributing to the lowed nucleation overpotential. The porous and conductive Cu foams can further mitigate the formation of Li dendrites, on account of its high specific surface area reduce the effective current density. The TiN@Cu foam based half cells and symmetric cells both exhibit improved reversibility and reduced polarization voltage in lithium plating/stripping process. Furthermore, better rate performance and cycling stability were also achieved in the full-cell configurations of TiN@Cu foam-Li/Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) and TiN@Cu foam-Li/LiFePO 4 (LFP). This work demonstrates a facile strategy to modify the commercial current collectors with pre-synthesized lithiophilic nanoparticles for achieving uniform Li deposition.

Grafting modification of poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) via Cu(0) mediated controlled radical polymerization

Yingdong Duan,Qizheng Li,Biyun Peng,Shaobo Tan,Zhicheng Zhang

In the present work, diverse vinyl monomers were successfully grafted onto poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) P(VDF-HFP) via direct activation of C F bonds using Cu(0)/4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridyl (DMDP) as catalyst under mild conditions. The structure of the graft copolymer was carefully characterized, and the initiating site was confirmed at the same time. Moreover, the kinetic results indicated the controlled behavior of the graft polymerization, and the composition of the graft copolymer can be regulated by changing the reaction conditions. This work may provide a facile strategy to endow P(VDF-HFP) copolymer with new functions via directly activating C F bonds.

Preparation of Cu single atoms on N-doped carbon materials with supercritical CO2 deposition

Jian-Lei Qi,Qin-Qin Xu,Dan Zhou,Jian-Zhong Yin,Qi-Ke Jiang

Cu single atoms dispersed on N-doped carbon materials (Cu-NC) were obtained after supercritical CO 2 deposition and decompression, without further post-treatment. AC-HAADF-STEM, STEM , XRD , ICP-OES, and XPS results confirmed that the Cu atoms were equably dispersed over the N-doped carbon (NC) support with the loading of 0.80 wt%. The catalytic performance of Cu-NC in solvent-free oxidation of phenylcarbinol to benzaldehyde was investigated, and the conversion of 73.9% and selectivity of 85.7% were obtained at 50 °C for 1 h. A high-pressure view cell was used to observe the dissolution and diffusion for Cu(acac) 2 in scCO 2 . The stability of Cu-NC structures and the formation path of active oxygen species (O*) on different configurations were predicted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and CuN 3 C 1 was found to be more conducive to the activation of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP).
