Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a mucopolysaccharide alternately linked by glucuronic acid and n -acetylglucosamine, which is usually used as a moisturizer in cosmetics. In this study, HA derivative (FA-HA) was prepared by modifying sodium hyaluronate with ferulic acid (FA). The chemical and morphological structure of FA-HA were characterized by UV, FTIR, 1 H-NMR, DLS and TEM. The results showed that FA was grafted onto HA chains via ester bonds and self-assembled into nanoparticles in aqueous solution. The introduction of FA endowed the nanoparticles with antioxidant function. The FRAP value of 10 mg/mL FA-HA was 1.985 mM, and the clearance rate of O 2 − , DPPH + and ABTS + could reach 83.13%, 88.86% and 99.48% respectively. Moreover, FA-HA can be used as Pickering emulsifiers to stabilize the emulsion. The results showed that the size of emulsion droplets decreased as the concentration of FA-HA increased. When the mass ratio of oil to water was 7/3, the emulsion droplets were the smallest. The addition of sodium chloride will increase the size of emulsion droplets, destroying the stability of the emulsion. In addition, FA-HA was also universal and was capable of emulsifying alkanes, esters, and natural oils, which was expected to be applied in the cosmetics and food fields.

The flower of Syringa pubescens Turcz., frequently prepared as herbal tea, exhibits various biological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective activities. Herein, we identify the chemical constituents from ethanol extract of S. pubescens flower (SPFE) and explore its antioxidant, anti-xanthine oxidase (anti-XOD), and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) enzyme activities, and anti-inflammatory activities and mechanisms. SPFE contained a variety of glycosides and showed good antioxidant capacity and effectively inhibited the activity of 5-LOX and XOD enzymes in vitro. In the model of RAW264.7 cell inflammation generated by lipopolysaccharide, SPFE not only impeded the expression of inflammatory mediators and the accumulation of malondialdehyde, but also restored the capacity of antioxidant enzymes. Moreover, SPFE could notably relieve or treat inflammation by suppressing the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 proteins. In vivo inflammation models, oral SPFE remarkably reduced the swelling of the ear, paw tissues in mice and had a good anti-inflammatory activity, reducing cell infiltration in the claw tissue, and restoring the degree of oxidative damage in the organism. Our findings demonstrate that SPFE exhibits promising potential as a novel therapeutic agent or nutraceutical for anti-inflammatory applications. Graphical

Chemical modifications can impart distinct physicochemical properties and biological activities to polysaccharides. In this study, Lavandula angustifolia polysaccharide (LAP) was purified through a series of processes including decolorization, deproteinization, freeze-drying, and column chromatography using DEAE-750 cellulose and Sephadex G-200, yielding a major homogeneous polysaccharide designated as LAP. The LAP was subsequently modified via acetylation method, producing a series of acetylated derivatives with varying degrees of substitution, referred to as LAP-1, LAP-2 and LAP-3, respectively. The characterization of these polysaccharides was conducted using various methodologies, including viscosity, solubility, molecular weight (Mw), ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Congo red, thermogravimetric (TG), differential thermogravimetry (DTG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The LAP and its derivatives were identified as heteropolysaccharides composed of varying molar ratios of fucose, rhamnose, mannose and galactose, with Mws of 27.32, 19.74, 17.52, and 21.43 kDa, respectively. The acetylation modifications were found to influence the viscosity, solubility, surface morphology and thermal properties of LAP and its derivatives, and notably, these effects were observed to be beneficial. Furthermore, antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity assays demonstrated that acetylation significantly enhanced the biological activities of the polysaccharides, exhibiting a positive correlation with the degree of substitution. These findings suggest that distinct functional and bioactive polysaccharides can be developed through acetylation modification. Graphical

There have been studies published on the composition and coating uses of raw lacquers following enzymatic oxidative polymerization. The change of urushiol’ thermal stability and biological activity following polymerization to create oligomer, however, has received little attention. This work using silica gel column chromatography to separate urushiol and urushiol oligomer from polymerized raw lacquer and assessed its antibacterial, antioxidant, and thermal stability in an effort to decrease the allergenicity of urushiol and increase its application. By using gel chromatography, the urushiol oligomer were discovered to be polymers with 2–5 degrees of polymerization. According to characterization results from techniques like UV, FT-IR, and 1H NMR, urushiol was converted into urushiol oligomer by addition reactions, and C–C coupling. The findings demonstrated that the urushiol oligomer’ IC50 values for scavenging DPPH and ABTS free radicals were 40.8 and 27.4 μg/mL, respectively, and that their minimum inhibitory concentrations against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis were 250 and 125 μg/mL. The urushiol oligomer’s thermogravimetric differential curve peak temperature (461.8 °C) was higher than urushiol’s (239.5 °C), indicating that urushiol undergoes polymerization with enhanced thermal stability. The study’s findings establish a foundation for the use of polymerized urushiol and urushiol oligomer in applications including functional materials and additives.

This study aimed to explore the potential of soybean protein isolate hydrolysates (SPIH) prepared via Alcalase as delivery carriers and develop novel SPIH-Cur nanoparticles. Hydrolysis caused the varying degrees degradation in the 7S and 11S subunits, significantly enhancing SPI's antioxidant activity. The reduction in particle size and the exposure of hydrophobic groups in SPIH contributed to the formation of stable SPIH-Cur nanoparticles, due to their well binding capacity to curcumin (Cur). The 30 min SPIH-Cur sample exhibited the highest encapsulation efficiency (83.09 %), owing to its high binding affinity (Ka = 9.56 × 10 3 M −1 ). Encapsulation by SPIH also significantly improved Cur's thermal and light stability. Moreover, FTIR, fluorescence spectra, and molecular docking analyses revealed that the formation of SPIH-Cur were primarily driven by hydrophobic forces and hydrogen bonds. Above results provide a foundation for fabricating nanoparticles that deliver lipophilic bioactive compounds with high encapsulation efficiency and stability derived from SPIH.

Biodegradable packaging materials from cellulose are eco-friendly alternatives to traditional petroleum-based plastics. Balancing its mechanical properties as well as protective values (antioxidation, oxygen barrier, etc.) is critical. However, most studies to improve its antioxidation performance were accompanied by sacrificed mechanical properties. In the current work, a series of linear -COOH functionalized phenolic polymers were prepared from phenolic compounds (vanillin, 3,4-dihydroxy benzaldehyde) through a facile tri-component thiol-aldehyde polycondensation . While circumventing the cumbersome protection-deprotection of phenol groups, the one-pot strategy also affords water dispersible polymers for fabricating composites with cellulose nanofibers in an aqueous medium. After introducing 5–10 wt% of the copolymers , a minor soft phase was formed inside the composites, contributing to enhanced mechanical strength , toughness, antioxidation capability, and ultra-violet blocking performance, while its oxygen barrier property was well maintained.

Water-in-water (W/W) emulsions as innovative transport for hydrophilic functional ingredients inherently lack stability due to the ultralow interfacial tension and thick interfacial layer. In this work, we first proposed a simple strategy to construct stable dextran (DEX)-in-poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) W/W emulsions by utilizing the unique phase preference of konjac glucomannan/tragacanth gum (KT) hydrogels formed based on the cooling-induced intermolecular hydrogen bonds. KT hydrogels were demonstrated to present selective partition to PEG phase and could form physically crosslinking network, thus significantly improving the rheological behavior and stability of DEX-in-PEG (D/P) emulsions with no flocculation after 31 d of storage at 25 °C. Meanwhile, the average droplet size of emulsions decreased from 15.37 to 8.48 μm with TG concentration tuning from 0.2 % to 0.8 %. When encapsulating riboflavin (RIB) in D/P emulsions stabilized by KT-4 hydrogel, the storage and lighting stability of RIB were enhanced with retention rate of 60.94 % and 21.89 %, respectively. In addition, the release of RIB in the simulate gastrointestinal environment substantially reduced and the antioxidant activity of RIB was maximumly protected due to the unique pH-responsiveness of KT hydrogel network. This work provides a feasible strategy for designing stable W/W emulsions stabilized by natural polysaccharide hydrogels, and biocompatible carriers for hydrophilic functional ingredients.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder marked by dysregulated immune responses and pyroptosis of intestinal epithelial cells, a type of programmed cell death that aggravates inflammation. Current therapeutic strategies frequently encounter limitations in both efficacy and specificity. Herein, we developed a calcium manganese-based (CaMn2O4) pancatalytic nanozyme designed to mitigate pyroptosis and alleviate IBD symptoms. The calcium manganese-based nanozyme exhibits dual enzyme (catalase and superoxide dismutase)-mimetic catalytic activities, scavenging reactive oxygen species and suppressing GSDMD cleavage, a key mediator of pyroptosis. In vitro studies demonstrated that CaMn2O4 nanozyme significantly reduced pyroptotic cell death in lipopolysaccharide/nigericin-stimulated cells. In a murine colitis model, CaMn2O4-based nanozyme treatment attenuated inflammatory infiltration, preserved epithelial barrier integrity, and downregulated pyroptosis-related markers. This study highlights the potential of pancatalytic nanotherapy targeting pyroptosis as a novel strategy for IBD treatment.

Food contamination caused by Listeria monocytogenes has been a major concern worldwide, and postbiotics derived from lactic acid bacteria are promising in controlling foodborne pathogens, while the antibacterial effects and mechanisms are still largely unclear. This study aimed to investigate the anti - L. monocytogenes activity and mechanisms of the postbiotics derived from Ligilactobacillus salivarius LSA-6 (Postbio-LSA-6), and its potential application in Inner Mongolian cheese preservation. Results showed Postbio-LSA-6 exhibited efficient anti - L. monocytogenes activity, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 4 mg/mL. Postbio-LSA-6 at 2MIC could significantly disrupt the bacterial membrane integrity, the membrane-damaged cells percentage increased to 49.6 %, leading to the intercellular materials leakage and cell death. Besides, Postbio-LSA-6 at 2MIC could induce the oxidative stress in bacterial cells, the membrane-fluorescence cells percentage increased to 46 %, resulting in lipid peroxidation. Untargeted metabolomics analysis showed organic acids and fatty acids such as erythronic acid, citric acid, 2-hydroxybutyric acid, and oleic acid were identified as the main differentially expressed metabolites in Postbio-LSA-6. Furthermore, Postbio-LSA-6 could effectively maintain the moisture content and pH stability, reduce the color and texture alterations, and extend the shelf life of cheese samples by suppressing microbial proliferation and lipid oxidation. These results offered new insights on the antibacterial activities of postbiotics against foodborne pathogens, and provided a low-cost, label-friendly biopreservation strategy for local dairy products preservation.

Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo has been used extensively in functional foods and garnered significant attention because of its therapeutic properties and nutritional value. Anthocyanins are prone to degradation in environmental and biological conditions, leading to color fading and loss of bioactivity. Forming complexes with endogenous polysaccharides can enhance their stability and protect the color of anthocyanin products. In this study, anthocyanins extracted from D. officinale (DOA) were complexed with D. officinale polysaccharide extract (DOP) to investigate the effects of complexation on the physicochemical properties of the anthocyanins. DOA–DOP complexes were characterized by scanning/transmission electron microscopies, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic light scattering, and multiple spectroscopies. Stability assessments and simulated in vitro gastrointestinal digestion were performed. Bioactivity was evaluated using a human colon epithelial (Caco-2) cell monolayer model. Spectral analyses revealed hydrogen bonding as the primary interaction in the DOA–DOP complexes. Complexation significantly enhanced DOA retention under light exposure, heat treatment, pH variation, and exposure to metal ions. DOP improved the in vitro antioxidant capacity of DOA. Furthermore, the DOA–DOP complexes exhibited prolonged resistance to upper gastrointestinal digestion and restored lipopolysaccharide-induced epithelial hyperpermeability in the Caco-2 cell model. Collectively, DOA–DOP complexation enhanced D. officinale anthocyanin stability, bioactivity, and colonic bioavailability.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Ludwigia adscendens (L.) Hara ( L. adscendens ) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), first mentioned in Sheng Cao Yao Xing Bei Yao ( Essential Guide to Raw Herbal Properties ). It clears heat, removes dampness, detoxifies, and reduces swelling. In TCM, it is prescribed for acne caused by dampness-heat accumulation. It is also used for cold, fever, sore throat, boils, dermatitis, and snake or dog bites. Research shows it has antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-lipoxygenase effects. However, studies on its impact on sebaceous gland function (a key factor in acne pathogenesis) are still limited. Aim of the study This study aims to investigate the effects of L. adscendens extract (LHE) on sebaceous gland function and its mechanisms. Materials and methods Active compounds in LHE were identified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Its effects on lipid synthesis, sebocyte proliferation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were assessed in a 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-induced sebocyte model. Untargeted lipidomics was used to analyse sebum composition and detect LHE-induced changes. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities were evaluated using zebrafish models and biochemical assays. Sebum-regulatory efficacy was measured to assess LHE's impact on sebum production. Results LHE showed strong biological activity by activating the PPARγ/LXRα/SREBP1 pathway, reducing lipid production, inhibiting sebocyte hyperproliferation, and delivering notable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Lipidomic analysis revealed that LHE effectively altered lipid composition, especially by lowering triglycerides (TG), diacylglycerols (DG), ceramides (Cer), and hexosyl-1-ceramides (Hex1Cer), with major changes observed in medium- and long-chain TG and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) levels. Efficacy tests confirmed that LHE reduced sebum production and improved skin texture by shrinking pore size. Conclusions LHE improves sebaceous gland function by reducing lipid overproduction and hyperproliferation through the PPARγ/LXRα/SREBP1 pathway. It also enhances the lipid profile by lowering key lipid molecules like TGs and PEs. Moreover, LHE shows anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. These findings suggest its therapeutic potential for sebaceous gland-related conditions and reveal new insights into its mechanism in topical use.
